Puerto Madryn Travel Guide

Cityscape of urban waterfront at dusk with skyline, tranquil sea, and birds.

Puerto Madryn is a seaside city on the Golfo Nuevo in Chubut province, on the Atlantic coast of Argentine Patagonia, and the base for one of the world’s great wildlife coasts. Just to the north, the Península Valdés, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and provincial protected area, is where southern right whales come to mate, give birth and raise their calves from about June to December, often within sight of the shore. The peninsula’s beaches and cliffs also hold elephant seals, sea lions, Magellanic penguins and, at certain times, orcas that hunt sea lion pups at the water’s edge; further south, Punta Tombo has one of the largest penguin colonies in South America. Puerto Madryn itself, founded by Welsh settlers in 1865, has a long beach promenade, seafood restaurants, diving and easy access to the Welsh tea houses of Gaiman.

Puerto Madryn’s areas: where things are

Puerto Madryn, a city of about 100,000 people, curves around the western shore of the Golfo Nuevo.

  • The center and the Rambla: the seafront avenue (Avenida Roca and the Rambla Brown) has most hotels, restaurants and tour agencies, with the long city beach in front; the main pier and the bus terminal are a short walk inland.
  • The south shore: the beach road continues south past quieter hotels and beach bars to the Ecocentro headland and the Punta Loma sea lion reserve.
  • The north: the coast road leads to El Doradillo’s whale-watching beaches, about 15 km (9 miles) from the center.
  • Puerto Pirámides: the only village on the Península Valdés, about 100 km (60 miles) away, with a handful of hotels, the whale-watching boats and dive operators.

Whale season and where to see whales

According to Chubut province’s official tourism board, southern right whales visit the coast of Chubut from June to December. They gather in the calm, shallow waters of the Golfo Nuevo and Golfo San José around the Península Valdés, where females give birth and nurse their calves. Adults weigh up to about 40 tonnes and grow to about 15 m (49 ft) long.

  • Boat trips from Puerto Pirámides: Puerto Pirámides, the only village on the peninsula, is the only place in Chubut where boat-based whale watching is allowed; six licensed companies run trips of about two hours, with strict rules on distance and approach. Calm mornings are best; trips are canceled in strong wind.
  • From the shore at El Doradillo: a protected stretch of beaches about 15 km (9 miles) north of Puerto Madryn, where whales come close to the shore at high tide; go at high tide and keep quiet.
  • Peak: numbers usually peak around September and October, when mothers and calves are most active; in June and July fewer whales have arrived, and by December most have left.

Chubut celebrates the start of the season each year with a “Semana de las Ballenas” (Whale Week) of events.

The Península Valdés: fees and rules (as of October 2026)

The Península Valdés Natural Protected Area covers about 840,000 hectares (2.1 million acres) of steppe, cliffs and beaches; its southern entrance is a short drive from Puerto Madryn. It is managed by the Península Valdés Administration (Chubut province), which charges at the entrance on the isthmus. According to the Administration, under Chubut Resolution 40/2026:

VisitorPrice per person per dayNotes
Foreign visitors, adultsARS 50,000 (about US$33)Pay by debit or credit card or QR code
Foreign visitors, children 6–11ARS 25,000 (about US$16)
Children up to 5 and people with a disabilityFree
Argentine nationals, adultsARS 20,000ID required

  • Double day ticket: under the “Doble Día” system, now permanent, you pay once and can re-enter free within the following seven days; keep your ticket.
  • Driving: the peninsula’s roads are mostly gravel, with long distances (Puerto Pirámides is about 100 km, or 60 miles, from Puerto Madryn, and the far points much more); drive slowly, watch for guanacos and rheas, and carry fuel, water and food.
  • Wildlife rules: stay on paths and at viewpoints, keep away from animals on the beaches, and never feed wildlife.
  • Exchange: on October 2, 2026, the Central Bank of Argentina’s reference rate was about ARS 1,520 per US dollar.

Top things to see on the Península Valdés

Puerto Pirámides

A tiny village of a few hundred people on a sheltered bay with cliffs, the base for whale-watching boats, diving and sea kayaking, with a few hotels and restaurants. Sunset over the bay is spectacular.

Punta Delgada and Caleta Valdés

On the peninsula’s eastern Atlantic shore, viewpoints overlook beaches where southern elephant seals haul out to breed in the southern spring (from about August to November) and molt in summer, and a long lagoon at Caleta Valdés shelters Magellanic penguins.

Punta Norte

At the peninsula’s northern tip, a sea lion colony attracts orcas that famously strand themselves on purpose to catch pups, mostly around high tide from about February to April; sightings are never guaranteed.

The Isla de los Pájaros and the Golfo San José

A viewpoint on the isthmus looks out to the Isla de los Pájaros, a seabird island in the Golfo San José, which is a protected marine park.

Other things to do in Puerto Madryn

Punta Tombo

About 180 km (110 miles) south, Punta Tombo is a provincial reserve with a colony of hundreds of thousands of Magellanic penguins; walkways lead between the nests. The penguins are present from about September to April, with chicks from about December. The reserve charges its own fee.

Diving and snorkeling

Puerto Madryn is Argentina’s best-known diving center, with shore dives, a wreck park and dives with friendly sea lions; the water is cold, about 10–17 °C (50–63 °F), so dry suits or thick wetsuits are used. See our guide to diving.

The Ecocentro and the beach

The Ecocentro, on a headland south of the center, is an interpretation center on the marine ecosystem with a whale-watching tower; the city beach and promenade run for several kilometers along the bay. In summer, the beach is popular with Argentine families. See our guide to beaches.

Day trips from Puerto Madryn

  • Península Valdés: a long full day by car or tour, ideally with a night in Puerto Pirámides.
  • Punta Tombo: a full day trip from September to April.
  • Gaiman and Trelew: the Welsh-founded villages of the lower Chubut Valley, about an hour away, with chapels and traditional Welsh tea houses serving cakes, and Trelew’s Egidio Feruglio Paleontological Museum, with Patagonian dinosaurs.
  • Camarones and Cabo Dos Bahías: a quieter coastal reserve with penguins and sea lions, further south; best as an overnight trip.

More day trips

  • Punta Loma: a small protected area about 17 km (11 miles) south-east of the city with a viewpoint over a South American sea lion colony and cormorant cliffs.
  • Rawson and Playa Unión: the provincial capital’s beach suburb, where boats leave to look for Commerson’s dolphins.
  • The Welsh chapels of the Chubut Valley: small brick chapels scattered among the farms around Gaiman and Dolavon.

Getting there and getting around

  • By air: most flights from Buenos Aires (about 2 hours) land at Trelew’s Almirante Marcos A. Zar airport (REL), about 65 km (40 miles) south of Puerto Madryn; shuttles and taxis run to Madryn. Puerto Madryn’s own small El Tehuelche airport (PMY) has a few flights.
  • By bus: long-distance buses run from Buenos Aires (about 18–20 hours) and along the Patagonian coast; the terminal is near the center.
  • Getting around: the city is walkable. For the Península Valdés and Punta Tombo, join a tour or rent a car (check whether gravel roads are allowed). A bus runs from Puerto Madryn to Puerto Pirámides on some days.

Getting around: practical details

The Península Valdés is best visited by car or on an organized tour: public transport reaches only Puerto Pirámides, on a limited schedule. Gravel roads link Puerto Pirámides with Punta Delgada, Caleta Valdés and Punta Norte; plan a long day, start early, and carry water and snacks, as services are few. Many rental contracts in Patagonia exclude damage on gravel roads, so read the terms. Punta Tombo is reached by a mix of paved and gravel roads south of Trelew; most visitors join a tour. Tours usually include hotel pickup in Puerto Madryn, the park fee or a stop to pay it, and lunch time in Puerto Pirámides.

When to go and how long to stay

The coast here is dry and windy, with warm summers and cool winters. The table uses the National Meteorological Service’s 1991–2020 normals for the Trelew airport station, about 60 km (37 miles) south and a little inland, as published by the World Meteorological Organization; Puerto Madryn on the gulf is slightly milder in summer.

Crowds: September and October bring the most whale watchers, and January and February bring Argentine beach holidaymakers; book Puerto Pirámides lodging early in both seasons.

3 days in Puerto Madryn

Day one, the city’s promenade and the Ecocentro, and El Doradillo at high tide. Day two, the Península Valdés with a whale-watching boat from Puerto Pirámides (June to December) and the elephant seal viewpoints. Day three, Punta Tombo (September to April) or Gaiman’s tea houses.

5 days

Spend a night in Puerto Pirámides for a calm-morning boat trip and sunset, add a dive with sea lions, and visit Trelew’s dinosaur museum and Gaiman.

Where to stay in Puerto Madryn

  • The seafront: hotels and apartments along the bay, many with water views; whales are sometimes visible from the promenade.
  • The center: mid-range hotels and hostels near restaurants and the bus terminal.
  • Puerto Pirámides: a few small hotels and cabins for an overnight inside the peninsula, closest to the whale boats.

Foreign tourists who pay for accommodation with a card issued abroad don’t pay Argentina’s 21% VAT (IVA) on the room; give the hotel your passport details.

Choosing where to stay

Stay on the seafront in Puerto Madryn for the best choice of hotels and restaurants and for tour pickups; ask for a sea-view room in whale season. A night in Puerto Pirámides puts you next to the whale boats for calm early-morning trips and gives you sunset over the bay, but the village has few services. Travelers on a budget find hostels and apartments a few blocks inland from the beach.

Food and drink in Puerto Madryn

Seafood is the specialty: Patagonian prawns (langostinos), squid, mussels and scallops, fish of the day grilled or in a cazuela (seafood stew), and king crab brought from the south. Restaurants line the seafront, and some of the best fish places are near the piers. In Gaiman, the Welsh tea houses serve afternoon tea with scones, bread and butter, jams and the dense “torta galesa” fruit cake. Patagonian lamb and local craft beers round out the menu.

Practical tips for Puerto Madryn

  • Book whale boats early: in September and October, book a day ahead and allow for wind cancellations.
  • Keep your ticket: the Península Valdés ticket gives free re-entry for seven days.
  • Money: cards are widely accepted; foreign cards are settled at the financial dollar rate. Carry some cash for Puerto Pirámides.
  • Distances: the peninsula is large; a round trip to Punta Norte and back is more than 400 km (250 miles), mostly gravel.
  • Safety: Puerto Madryn is calm. The risks are on the road (gravel, wind, wildlife) and at the shore: keep back from cliff edges and from elephant seals and sea lions, which can charge. For emergencies, call 911.

What to pack for Puerto Madryn

A windproof jacket and warm layers in every season, a hat and gloves for winter boat trips, sunglasses and strong sunscreen, binoculars, a camera with a zoom lens, seasickness tablets, and comfortable shoes for walkways. Argentina uses 220 V and type I plugs.
