Port Vila Travel Guide

Stunning aerial view of a coastal city with sailboats dotting the bay, displaying vibrant scenery and serene waters.

Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, curves around a sheltered harbor on the southwest coast of Efate, with small islands floating offshore and green hills behind. It is a relaxed, colorful town of about 50,000 people: the open-sided Market House on the waterfront, piled with taro, yams, island cabbage and flowers, is its heart, and evenings bring sunset drinks by the water and kava at the local nakamals. Within half an hour you can swim under the Mele Cascades, snorkel among coral gardens at Hideaway Island and post a waterproof postcard from its underwater post office, take a boat to Lelepa and the UNESCO-listed Chief Roi Mata’s Domain, or drive the sealed ring road around Efate to swimming holes, beaches and villages. Resorts on the Erakor and Pango lagoons and island hideaways make it an easy beach base, and Port Vila is also the hub for flights to Tanna’s Mount Yasur and to Espiritu Santo. The city was shaken by a strong earthquake in December 2024 and has been repairing damage since, but its hotels, airport, market and cruise port are open. The drier months from May to October are the most comfortable.

Port Vila’s areas and who each one suits

The waterfront and town center

Along Lini Highway, the waterfront has the Market House, the seawall promenade, cafés, restaurants, banks, duty-free shops and the handicraft market. It is busiest on weekdays and cruise days, and quiet on Sunday. Stay here for walkability and dining.

Erakor and Pango lagoons

South of town, the calm Erakor Lagoon and the Pango peninsula have resorts with pools, beaches and overwater or beachfront bungalows, plus kayaking and paddleboarding. They are five to fifteen minutes by taxi from town.

Iririki, Hideaway and Mele Bay

Iririki Island, a few minutes by free ferry across the harbor, has a resort in the former British commissioner’s residence grounds. Hideaway Island, in Mele Bay west of town, has a marine reserve, a small resort and the underwater post office. Mele Bay has beaches, a golf course and the road to the Mele Cascades.

The rest of Efate

Resorts and bungalows on the north and east coasts of Efate, around Havannah Harbour, Takara and Eton, offer seclusion, snorkeling and island views, 45 to 60 minutes from town.

Top things to see in Port Vila

Port Vila Market House

The waterfront Market House is open around the clock from Monday morning to Saturday midday, and women from villages around Efate and nearby islands sleep at their stalls through the week. You’ll find root crops, fruit, vegetables, flowers, peanuts, laplap and cooked meals, and the food court serves big plates of fish, chicken or beef with rice and laplap at local prices. Prices are fixed, and bargaining isn’t done.

Mele Cascades

About 10 km (6 miles) west of town, a series of limestone pools and waterfalls cascades down a forested hillside. A trail with steps and handrails climbs beside the water, with places to swim, to a final waterfall. Wear shoes with grip, go early to avoid cruise-day crowds, and pay the entry fee at the gate.

Hideaway Island and the underwater post office

A short boat ride from Mele Bay, Hideaway Island is surrounded by a marine reserve with easy snorkeling among corals and reef fish. Its famous underwater post office, about 3 m (10 feet) down, lets you post waterproof postcards bought on the island. Day visitors pay an entry fee that includes the boat.

Chief Roi Mata’s Domain

This UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 2008, includes sites on Efate, Lelepa and Artok (Hat) islands connected with the life and death of Roi Mata, a powerful 17th-century chief, and the mass burial on Artok that oral tradition and archaeology confirm. Guided tours by the local community combine a boat trip, the Fels Cave on Lelepa with its ancient paintings, snorkeling and stories; visits are only allowed with these guides.

Vanuatu Cultural Centre and National Museum

Near the parliament, the Vanuatu Cultural Centre (Vanuatu Kaljoral Senta) houses the National Museum, with carved tamtam slit drums, masks, ceremonial objects and canoes from across the islands. Demonstrations of sand drawing and traditional music are sometimes held.

Ekasup Cultural Village and kastom tours

Guided cultural tours near Port Vila introduce traditional village life: building, fire-making, medicine, cooking laplap and kastom dances. Choose community-run tours that share income with villagers.

The ring road around Efate

A sealed road of about 130 km (80 miles) circles Efate. Highlights include the Blue Lagoon, a freshwater-and-sea swimming hole with a rope swing; Eton Beach and its blue pool; the World War II memorials and Havannah Harbour, once an American fleet anchorage; the Siviri cave; and roadside fruit stands and villages. Allow a full day; small custom fees are charged at many swimming spots.

Other things to do in Port Vila

  • Snorkeling and diving: dive centers in town visit reefs, swim-throughs and wrecks close to Port Vila, such as the Star of Russia sailing ship and the Tasman flying boat; snorkel at Hideaway Island and Pango Point.
  • Kayaking and paddleboarding: on the Erakor Lagoon and around the harbor islands.
  • Fishing charters: for marlin, tuna and wahoo.
  • Ziplining and quad biking: adventure parks in the hills above Mele.
  • Golf: courses near Mele Bay.
  • Day trip to Tanna: fly to Tanna in about 40 minutes to see Mount Yasur, usually as an overnight trip, since the volcano is best at dusk.

Food and drink

Port Vila’s dining is surprisingly varied, reflecting its British, French and Pacific heritage: French bakeries and bistros, steakhouses serving tender Santo beef, seafood restaurants on the waterfront, and the Market House food court for cheap local meals of laplap, fish and rice. Try laplap, Vanuatu’s national dish of grated root vegetables baked with coconut cream in banana leaves; tuluk, a meat-filled version; fresh lobster and fish; and Vanuatu coffee and chocolate. In the evening, visit a nakamal for kava, often marked by a colored light, and then a waterfront bar for the sunset. Tipping isn’t customary.

Getting there and getting around

By air

Bauerfield International Airport (VLI), about 6 km (4 miles) from the town center, has flights from Brisbane, Sydney and other Australian cities, Auckland, Nadi (Fiji Airways, with connections from North America and Asia), Nouméa (Aircalin and Air Calédonie) and Honiara. Air Vanuatu’s domestic flights to Tanna, Santo and the outer islands leave from the same airport. There are ATMs and SIM card counters at the airport, and taxis and hotel transfers outside.

By cruise ship

Cruise ships dock at the main wharf, a short drive or a 30-minute walk from the town center, and smaller ships anchor in the harbor and tender passengers ashore. Expect crowds at the market, the cascades and Hideaway Island on cruise days.

Getting around

  • Buses: privately run minibuses with a “B” on the number plate cruise the main roads; wave one down, tell the driver where you are going, and pay a fixed fare of a few hundred vatu around town.
  • Taxis: cars with a “T” plate; agree on the fare before you set off, especially for longer trips.
  • Rental cars and scooters: available in town; drive on the right, watch for potholes, pedestrians and animals, and avoid driving at night outside town.
  • Boats: a free ferry runs to Iririki Island, and boats serve Hideaway and the lagoon resorts.

  • Dengue: dengue occurs in Port Vila, especially in the wet season; use repellent.
  • Water: drink bottled or filtered water.
  • Theft and night safety: petty theft happens; keep valuables secure, use taxis at night and avoid unlit areas.

  • Emergencies: 111 for police, 112 for ambulance, 113 for fire. Vila Central Hospital and private clinics provide basic care; serious cases are evacuated to Australia or New Zealand.
