Puducherry, still widely known by its old name, Pondicherry or “Pondy,” is a small, breezy seaside city on the Coromandel Coast where the French left their mark: mustard-yellow villas with shuttered windows and bougainvillea, streets with French names, a seafront promenade, cafés serving croissants next to idli stalls, and police in red képis. The capital of the Union Territory of Puducherry was the main settlement of French India for nearly three centuries, until the administration was handed over to India on 1 November 1954 and the merger was formalized in 1963; the city was officially renamed Puducherry in 2006. It is also a spiritual center, home to the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and, a few kilometers north, Auroville, the international township built around the golden Matrimandir. Most visitors spend two to four days here, walking the French and Tamil quarters, cycling to beaches, eating very well and visiting Auroville. It is about 160 km (100 miles) south of Chennai. The best months are December to March, after the northeast monsoon, which brings heavy rain from October to December.

Puducherry’s areas and where to stay
The old town is laid out in a neat grid, divided by a canal into two halves: the French Quarter by the sea and the Tamil Quarter inland. The newer city spreads west and north, and Auroville lies about 10 km (6 miles) to the north.
The French Quarter (White Town)
Between the seafront and the canal, the French Quarter, or Ville Blanche, is the heart of Puducherry’s charm: quiet, clean streets such as Rue Romain Rolland and Rue Dumas, colonial villas with high walls and courtyards, the Governor’s Palace (Raj Nivas), the French Consulate, the French Institute and the Ashram. Many old houses are now heritage hotels, guesthouses, cafés and galleries. It is the most atmospheric and walkable base, and the priciest.
The Tamil Quarter
West of the canal, the Tamil Quarter (once the “Black Town”) has traditional Tamil houses with verandas (thinnai) and pillared porches, temples, churches and busy markets around Mission Street and the Grand Bazaar. Some homes have been restored as guesthouses, and it is cheaper and more local than the French Quarter.
The city center and the north
Around MG Road and Nehru Street, the commercial center has shops, budget hotels and the main bus stand. Farther north, along the East Coast Road toward Auroville, beach resorts and guesthouses face the sea at Serenity Beach and Kottakuppam.
Auroville
Auroville’s guesthouses, set among forests and farms, are run by the community and suit visitors who want to take part in workshops, volunteering or a quieter stay. A scooter is almost essential.
Top things to see in Puducherry
The Promenade and Rock Beach
Puducherry’s seafront promenade runs for about 1.5 km (1 mile) along Goubert Avenue, past the Gandhi statue, the War Memorial, the old lighthouse, the Old Customs House and the town hall. The “beach” here is a sea wall of rocks, with no sand and dangerous surf, but at sunrise and in the evening the promenade is the city’s living room, full of walkers, families and vendors; it is usually closed to traffic in the evening.
Walking the French Quarter
Walk the grid of streets between the promenade and the canal, with their colonial villas, churches and street names in French and Tamil. Look out for Bharathi Park, the central garden with the 19th-century Aayi Mandapam monument; the Governor’s Palace; the Romain Rolland Library, one of the oldest libraries in India; the French Institute of Pondicherry, a research center for Indology and ecology; and the church of Notre-Dame des Anges facing the sea. The Pondicherry Museum, near Bharathi Park, has French colonial furniture and finds from Arikamedu, an ancient port that traded with Rome in the first centuries CE.
Sri Aurobindo Ashram
Founded by the philosopher and freedom fighter Sri Aurobindo and his collaborator Mirra Alfassa, known as the Mother, the Ashram occupies several buildings in the French Quarter. Visitors can enter the main building to see the flower-covered Samadhi (the tomb of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother) at set hours, in silence and without photographs; dress modestly and leave shoes outside.
Basilica of the Sacred Heart and the churches
The Gothic Revival Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with its stained-glass windows, stands on the south side of town, and the Immaculate Conception Cathedral on Mission Street dates from the 18th century. Both are active churches; visit outside services.
Manakula Vinayagar Temple
This much-loved Ganesha temple in the French Quarter predates the French settlement and is covered with colorful sculptures and murals. Its temple elephant used to bless visitors; the shrine is busy in the evenings. Remove shoes and dress modestly.
Auroville and the Matrimandir
Founded in 1968 as a “universal town” where people from around the world would live in human unity, Auroville is home to a community of several thousand people from many countries, with farms, forests, workshops, schools and cafés. At its center stands the Matrimandir, a huge golden sphere surrounded by gardens, built as a place for silent individual concentration. According to Auroville, day visitors start at the Visitors Center, where the Information Desk is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and shows an introductory video. After the video, you can collect a free pass for the Matrimandir Viewing Point, a raised garden with a view of the sphere, about a 10-minute walk away; passes must be collected by visitors themselves, not by guides or drivers, and a free electric shuttle helps those who cannot walk. Vehicles must be left at the Visitors Center parking, and the Matrimandir is a drone-free zone. To meditate in the Inner Chamber, you must book online in advance as an individual, not as a group: according to the Matrimandir’s website, the booking link is open from 7 a.m. to noon (India time) every day except Tuesdays, dates open five working days ahead, same-day bookings are not possible, visitors report at the Visitors Center at 8:15 a.m., children must be at least 10, and visits are canceled in rainy weather. The Matrimandir also closes for annual maintenance, as it did from 18 May to 14 June 2026.
More classic sights
- Botanical Garden: a 19th-century French garden with old trees, near the bus stand.
- Ousteri Lake: a wetland about 10 km (6 miles) west, good for birdwatching in winter.
- Grand Bazaar (Goubert Market): the main market for fruit, flowers, fish and spices.
- Sri Aurobindo Handmade Paper factory: traditional paper-making, with a shop.
Other things to do in Puducherry
Food and drink
Puducherry is one of India’s best small cities for eating. French bakeries and cafés serve croissants, baguettes and crêpes; restaurants in heritage houses offer Franco-Tamil dishes such as meen moilee fish curry, prawn curry with French techniques, assad (a coconut curry) and vadouvan, a spice mix of onions and garlic. The Tamil Quarter has superb South Indian breakfasts and “meals,” and seafood is fresh everywhere. Puducherry is known for lower prices on wine and beer than neighboring Tamil Nadu, and there are bars in town and at beach resorts. Drink bottled or filtered water.
Beaches
The town has no swimming beach, but there are sandy beaches nearby: Paradise Beach, on a sandbar reached by boat from the Chunnambar boat house, about 8 km (5 miles) south; Serenity Beach and Auroville beach to the north, popular for surfing lessons and sunsets. Currents are strong, so swim only where others do and in calm conditions. See our beaches and surfing guides.
Yoga, wellness and workshops
Yoga and meditation classes are offered in town and in Auroville, where the community also runs workshops in pottery, organic farming, music and other crafts. The International Yoga Festival is held each January.
Shopping
Look for handmade paper, incense, pottery, cotton clothing, leather goods and Auroville products in the boutiques of the French Quarter and at the Visitors Center.

Practical tips for Puducherry
- Collect your Auroville pass yourself: passes are free and given only to visitors in person at the Visitors Center.
- Book the Matrimandir early: Inner Chamber visits must be requested individually days in advance.
- Ride carefully: wear a helmet on scooters, carry your license, and watch for cattle and sand on coastal roads.
- Mind the dress code: cover shoulders and knees at the Ashram, temples and churches.
- Carry small notes: for markets, autos and temple donations; cards and UPI work in most cafés.
Safety
Puducherry is relaxed and generally very safe. The sea is the main danger: the Promenade’s rocks and the town’s shore have powerful surf, and currents are strong on nearby beaches; swim only at sandy beaches in calm conditions where others swim, and never on the rocks. Cyclones and floods: the northeast monsoon from October to December brings very heavy rain, and cyclones from the Bay of Bengal can cause flooding, power cuts and closed roads; follow IMD warnings and local instructions. Heat: from April to September, it is hot and humid; drink plenty of water and rest at midday. Roads: the East Coast Road is busy and fast, and scooter accidents are common; ride defensively and avoid riding at night. Petty theft is rare, but lock rented bicycles and scooters. Food and water: eat at busy places and drink bottled or filtered water. Women travelers generally find Puducherry comfortable; dress modestly away from the beaches. In an emergency, call 112.
What to pack for Puducherry
Light cotton or linen clothes, including some that cover shoulders and knees for the Ashram and temples, sandals that slip off easily, a sun hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen, swimwear for the beaches, an umbrella or light rain jacket from October to December, and an international driving permit if you plan to rent a scooter. India uses 230 V, with round-pin plugs of types C, D and M. See our rain jackets and travel adapters guides.
