What Serralves is

The estate was the home of Carlos Alberto Cabral, the second Count of Vizela, who built the villa between 1925 and 1944 and had the French landscape architect Jacques Gréber design the gardens in the 1930s. The Portuguese state bought the property in 1986, and the Serralves Foundation was set up in 1989 to run it.

In 1999 the Museum of Contemporary Art opened in a white building by Álvaro Siza, Porto’s most celebrated architect. Since then the foundation has added the House of Cinema Manoel de Oliveira (2019, also by Siza), the Treetop Walk (2019) and a new museum wing, the Álvaro Siza Wing, which opened in October 2023. Today the foundation calls itself the foremost museum for contemporary art in Portugal.

What you’ll see

The museum and the Siza Wing

Changing exhibitions of established and emerging artists, plus shows drawn from the Serralves Collection. The galleries are calm, white and full of natural light, so even if modern art isn’t your thing, the building itself is worth seeing. The Siza Wing adds three floors of exhibition space. Check the programme before you go: what’s on changes several times a year.

The villa (Casa de Serralves)

The pink villa, designed mainly by the Portuguese architect José Marques da Silva, is a landmark of art deco and streamlined modern architecture in Portugal. Its interiors involved leading French designers of the period, including Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, and René Lalique made the glass skylight in the main hall. It is used for exhibitions, so what you see inside varies.

The park and the Treetop Walk

For many visitors the park is the highlight. Its 18 hectares mix formal gardens, woods, a traditional farm and around 200 species of trees and shrubs, with sculptures from the collection placed along the paths. The Treetop Walk is a 260-metre timber walkway that climbs to about 15 metres among the treetops. Children love the farm and the open lawns, and it’s a good place for a slow, green afternoon away from the crowded centre.

How long to allow and when to go

Give it three to four hours: about an hour and a half for the museum and villa and the rest for the park. Spring brings the gardens into flower and autumn colours the woods, but the park is pleasant all year. On a hot summer day, do the museum in the middle of the day and the park in the morning or late afternoon. On a budget, the Late Afternoon ticket (Monday to Thursday) is the cheapest way to see a bit of everything.

Getting there

Serralves is about 4 km west of the city centre, in the Foz side of Porto. There is no metro station at the door. The official site lists these STCP buses: 201 from Aliados (Serralves stop), 207 from Campanhã via Foz (Serralves Museum stop), 502 from Bolhão (Pinhais da Foz stop) and 504 from Boavista (João R. Cabrilho stop). From the metro, the simplest way is to ride to Casa da Música (lines A, B, C, E and F) and take bus 504 from there. Tourist buses also stop at Serralves.

Combine it with

Carry on west to Foz do Douro, where the river meets the Atlantic, for a seaside walk and dinner by the ocean. Or go back via Boavista and Casa da Música, Rem Koolhaas’s concert hall. Serralves fits neatly into a slower second or third day in Porto; see our Porto travel guide for the full plan.
