Tampa Travel Guide

A stunning aerial view of Tampa, FL cityscape featuring modern skyscrapers against clouded skies.

Tampa is the big, easy-going city of Florida’s Gulf coast, set on Tampa Bay where the Hillsborough River meets the sea. It is less about beaches than its neighbors across the bay and more about a lively waterfront: a 2.6-mile riverwalk lined with parks, museums and restaurants, the historic cigar-making district of Ybor City with its Cuban sandwiches and brick streets, and the thrill rides and African animals of Busch Gardens. Add an excellent aquarium, a top-rated airport, cruise ships at the port and a calendar of pirate-themed festivals, and Tampa makes a fine base for the whole bay area, with the white-sand beaches of Clearwater and St. Petersburg less than an hour away. Winters are dry and mild; summers are hot, humid and stormy.

Tampa’s neighborhoods and who each one suits

Tampa is spread out, but most of what visitors want lies in a strip along the river and the bay, from Ybor City in the east to Hyde Park and Bayshore Boulevard in the south-west.

Downtown and the Riverwalk

The business district of glass towers sits on the east bank of the Hillsborough River, wrapped by the Riverwalk. Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, the Tampa Museum of Art and the Straz Center for the performing arts face the Moorish minarets of the old Tampa Bay Hotel (now the University of Tampa) across the water. Good for first-timers who want hotels within walking distance of everything.

Channel District and Water Street

South-east of downtown, along the port channel, a newer district of apartments, hotels, restaurants and bars has grown up around the Florida Aquarium, the cruise terminals, the Amalie Arena (home of the Tampa Bay Lightning ice-hockey team) and the Tampa Bay History Center. Water Street is the polished, walkable heart of it, and the streetcar runs right through.

Ybor City

Tampa’s historic Latin quarter, founded in the 1880s around cigar factories that drew Cuban, Spanish and Italian immigrants. Brick streets, iron balconies, social clubs, cafés and cigar shops line 7th Avenue, which becomes the city’s busiest nightlife strip after dark. Great for food and history by day; lively and loud at weekends.

Hyde Park, SoHo and Bayshore

South-west of downtown, Hyde Park is an elegant neighborhood of early 20th-century homes with a small shopping and dining village. South Howard Avenue (SoHo) is lined with bars and restaurants, and Bayshore Boulevard runs for miles beside the bay with one of the longest continuous sidewalks in the country, perfect for a sunset walk or run.

Top things to see in Tampa

Prices and hours below were checked on the official sites in October 2026, unless we say otherwise; check again before you go.

The Tampa Riverwalk

The Riverwalk stretches 2.6 miles along the Hillsborough River through the heart of downtown, from the Channel District past the convention center, Curtis Hixon Park, the art museum and the Straz Center towards Armature Works, a former streetcar depot turned food hall in the Tampa Heights district. It is free, flat and open around the clock, with water taxis, bike-share stations, kayak rentals and plenty of places to eat along the way. Come at sunset, when the minarets of the University of Tampa glow across the river.

Ybor City

Walk 7th Avenue (La Séptima) and the side streets to see the old cigar factories, Spanish-style social clubs and the Centennial Park square, where wild chickens roam freely, a local tradition. Learn the story of the immigrant cigar workers, roll-your-own cigar shops and Cuban coffee counters, and eat a Cuban sandwich, said to have been perfected here, or a deviled crab croquette. The TECO Line Streetcar connects Ybor City with the Channel District and downtown in about 25 minutes end to end, and as of October 2026 every ride is fare free. It runs every 15 minutes, Monday to Thursday 7:00 a.m.–11:00 p.m., Friday 7:00 a.m.–2:00 a.m., Saturday 9:00 a.m.–2:00 a.m. and Sunday 8:30 a.m.–11:00 p.m.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and Adventure Island

About 8 miles (13 km) north-east of downtown, Busch Gardens is a theme park and zoo in one, known for some of Florida’s biggest roller coasters and an open savanna where giraffes, zebras and rhinos roam. Its newest area, Lion & Hyena Ridge, has just opened. In autumn 2026 the park runs its Howl-O-Scream Halloween nights on select dates until 31 October, and Christmas Town on select nights from 13 November 2026 to 4 January 2027. Ticket prices change by date, so buy on the park’s own site. Busch Gardens also runs a free shuttle from Orlando, with stops including SeaWorld Orlando; advance reservations are required and seats are limited. Next door, the Adventure Island water park is seasonal: its official calendar lists October 2026 and then reopens in March 2027.

The Florida Aquarium

On the Channel District waterfront, the aquarium follows a drop of water from Florida’s springs and wetlands through mangroves to coral reefs, with sharks, sea turtles, otters, penguins and a stingray touch pool. It also runs coral and sea turtle conservation programs, and wild dolphin boat trips into the bay. As of October 2026 it opens daily 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., with some later evenings. We could not read ticket prices on its site; check them before you go and buy online.

Tampa Bay History Center

Beside the aquarium on the Riverwalk, this museum tells 12,000 years of local history, from the first peoples and Spanish explorers to cattle ranchers, cigar makers and pirates, with a fine map library. As of October 2026 it opens daily 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., and gallery admission costs $18.95 for adults, $16.95 for seniors aged 60 and over, $14.95 for ages 7–17, and children under 7 go free.

Other things to do in Tampa

Eat your way through Tampa

Tampa’s food mixes Cuban, Spanish, Italian and Southern traditions. Try a Cuban sandwich and café con leche in Ybor City, Spanish dishes in one of the old-style Latin restaurants, fresh grouper sandwiches by the water, and the craft breweries Tampa is known for. Food halls such as Armature Works and Sparkman Wharf in the Channel District are easy one-stop options.

Sports

Tampa is a busy sports town. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers play American football at Raymond James Stadium from September to January, the Lightning play ice hockey at Amalie Arena from October to April, and spring training baseball fills the area’s stadiums in February and March. Major League Baseball’s Tampa Bay Rays play across the bay at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg.

On the water

Rent a kayak or paddleboard on the Hillsborough River, take a water taxi along the Riverwalk, or join a dolphin-watching cruise in the bay. For swimming, head to the Gulf beaches; the bay shore in Tampa itself is not a beach destination.

Day trips and onward travel

Clearwater and St. Petersburg

The nearest Gulf beaches are across the bay in Pinellas County. St. Petersburg, with the Dalí Museum and its waterfront pier, is about 20 miles (32 km) away, and Clearwater Beach, with its soft white sand and nightly sunset festival at Pier 60, about 25 miles (40 km). Both have their own pages on TravelerCenter. Allow 30–60 minutes each way by car, depending on traffic over the bay bridges.

Sarasota, Orlando and beyond

Sarasota, with the Ringling museums and Siesta Key Beach, is about 60 miles (97 km) south over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, which is worth the drive in itself. Orlando’s theme parks are about 85 miles (137 km) east along Interstate 4. Further afield, Naples and the Everglades lie about three hours south.

Nearby destinations

Getting there and getting around

From Tampa International Airport

Tampa International Airport (TPA) is about 6 miles (10 km) west of downtown. The SkyConnect people-mover links the main terminal with the Rental Car Center, where the public buses stop. According to HART, route 30 runs between the airport and downtown (via Kennedy Boulevard, Whiting Street for the streetcar, and the Marion Transit Center) every hour, from 4:30 a.m. to midnight on weekdays and from 7:00 a.m. to midnight at weekends. As of October 2026 a ride costs $2.00, with a daily fare cap of $4.00 when you pay with the Flamingo Fares app or card or a contactless bank card. Taxis, rideshare and hotel shuttles leave from the terminal. St. Pete–Clearwater International Airport (PIE) across the bay is a smaller, mostly low-cost alternative.

By train, coach and cruise ship

Amtrak trains and long-distance coaches serve downtown Tampa. Florida’s Brightline high-speed trains do not reach Tampa Bay; the nearest station is at Orlando International Airport, about 85 miles (137 km) away. Port Tampa Bay’s cruise terminals are in the Channel District, on the streetcar line; many travelers arrive a day early and stay downtown.

Getting around Tampa

The TECO Line Streetcar is free and links Ybor City, the Channel District and the edge of downtown. HART runs the city buses: as of October 2026 local fares are $2.00 a ride with a daily cap of $4.00 on Flamingo Fares, and a 1-Day Family Pass on the app covers up to five people. The Riverwalk is the nicest way to move around downtown on foot or by rental bike, and water taxis run along the river. For beaches, Busch Gardens and day trips, a car or rideshare is easiest.

Driving and tolls

Tampa’s toll roads are all-electronic: cash is not accepted. They include the Selmon Expressway (run by the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority), the Veterans and Suncoast parkways, the I-4 Connector and the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, which went cashless in April 2026. According to Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise, the Skyway costs $1.16 for a car with SunPass and $1.75 otherwise, and on the Selmon Expressway SunPass users pay 25 cents less per toll than TOLL-BY-PLATE customers. Without a transponder, TOLL-BY-PLATE photographs your number plate and mails an invoice with a $2.50 administrative fee, but it is not available in rental cars: rental companies run their own toll programs with their own fees, or you can add the rental’s plate to your own SunPass account. A SunPass Mini sticker costs $4.99 plus tax at Publix, CVS and Walgreens.

When to go and how long to stay

Tampa has a humid subtropical climate: long, hot and wet summers and short, mild, dry winters. The table uses NOAA’s 1991–2020 U.S. Climate Normals for the Tampa International Airport weather station: average daily highs and lows, and days with at least 0.10 in (2.5 mm) of rain.

SeasonAverage high / lowRainy days per monthWhat it’s likeGood for

Tampa’s airport averages about 49.5 in (1,257 mm) of rain a year, on about 69 days, with August the wettest month at 9.0 in (229 mm). Most summer rain falls in short, heavy afternoon storms with lightning, so plan outdoor sights for the morning.

Hurricane season: according to NOAA’s National Hurricane Center (NHC), the Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. If you travel in these months, follow forecasts from the National Hurricane Center and the local National Weather Service office, know your evacuation zone from Hillsborough County emergency management, obey any evacuation orders, and consider travel insurance.

Events worth planning around

  • January 2027: Gasparilla, Tampa’s pirate festival: the Children’s Gasparilla on 23 January and the main Gasparilla Pirate Fest, with its invasion and parade of pirates along Bayshore Boulevard, on 30 January 2027.
  • February 2027: the Outbound Voyage on 27 February, when the pirate ship leaves downtown; spring training baseball begins.
  • September–October: Halloween events at Busch Gardens; the American football and ice-hockey seasons begin.
  • November–early January: Christmas Town at Busch Gardens and holiday lights along the Riverwalk.

How long to stay: 2, 3 and 4 days

2 days: day one, walk the Riverwalk from Armature Works to the History Center and the Florida Aquarium, then dinner on Water Street; day two, Ybor City by streetcar for history, a Cuban sandwich and the evening scene, with sunset on Bayshore Boulevard.

3 days: add a full day at Busch Gardens. 4 days: add a beach day at Clearwater Beach or St. Petersburg and the Dalí Museum.

Where to stay in Tampa and hotel taxes

  • Downtown and the Riverwalk: business hotels close to everything; quieter at weekends.
  • Channel District and Water Street: modern hotels near the aquarium, the arena and the cruise port, on the streetcar line.
  • Ybor City: character and nightlife; ask for a quiet room.
  • Westshore and the airport: convenient for early flights and the bridges to the beaches.
  • Near Busch Gardens: practical for theme-park days, with less to do in the evening.

Hotels fill up for Gasparilla, big sports events and cruise weekends. Tampa is in Hillsborough County, where, according to the Florida Department of Revenue, sales tax totals 7.5% (the 6% state rate plus a 1.5% county surtax), charged on restaurant meals and most purchases; US prices are shown before tax. Hotel and other short-term stays of six months or less also carry Hillsborough County’s 6% tourist development tax, collected by the county tax collector, so a hotel bill carries about 13.5% in tax. Under the US Federal Trade Commission’s fee rule in force since May 2025, mandatory resort or destination fees must be included in the advertised total price, but taxes may be shown separately; compare total prices, and check parking charges, which are often extra.

Practical tips for Tampa

  • Use the free streetcar: it saves parking fees between Ybor City, the Channel District and downtown.
  • Plan around the heat: from June to September, do outdoor sights before noon and keep afternoons for museums and the aquarium.
  • Get a SunPass or check your rental toll plan: Tampa’s toll roads and bridges take no cash.
  • Book Busch Gardens online: prices change by date and are usually lower online; reserve the free Orlando shuttle early.
  • Lightning: Tampa Bay has frequent lightning in summer; leave the water and open areas when you hear thunder.
  • Emergencies: call 911.

What to pack for Tampa

Light, breathable clothing, sunglasses, a hat and high-factor sunscreen are needed all year. Bring a compact umbrella or a light rain jacket for the summer storms, and a sweater or light jacket for winter evenings, cool fronts and air-conditioned museums. Comfortable walking shoes are good for the Riverwalk and Ybor City’s brick streets; pack swimwear and water shoes for the water park and the beaches. A refillable water bottle and a small daypack make theme-park days easier.
