Destin Travel Guide

Discover the vibrant Atlanta skyline at night, showcasing the city's illuminated skyscrapers and bustling streets.

Destin sits on a narrow strip of land between Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf, in the heart of Florida’s Panhandle, the stretch of coast known as the Emerald Coast for its clear green water and powder-white quartz sand. A former fishing village that still calls itself the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village”, it is now one of Florida’s favorite family beach resorts, with a busy harbor full of charter boats, the Crab Island sandbar where hundreds of boats gather in summer, and beautiful state-park beaches. Fort Walton Beach and Okaloosa Island are just west across East Pass, and the chic little towns of South Walton’s Scenic Highway 30A are a short drive east. Note that Destin is on Central Time, one hour behind Orlando and Miami. The best months are April to June and September to October.

  • Best time: April to June and September to October, with average highs of 76–89 °F (25–32 °C) and warm sea. Winters are cool, around 63–66 °F (17–19 °C), and the sea is too cold for most swimmers.
  • Getting there: fly to Destin–Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) or Northwest Florida Beaches International (ECP) near Panama City Beach, then drive; a car is close to essential.
  • Time zone: Central Time (America/Chicago), unlike most of Florida.
  • Before you go: entry rules, money, driving and general safety are on our United States travel guide.

Destin’s areas and who each one suits

Destin is a long, thin town strung along US 98, which runs parallel to the beach with a slower scenic route, Old Highway 98 (Scenic Gulf Drive), closer to the water. It is in Okaloosa County; the beaches immediately east, from Miramar Beach onwards, are in Walton County.

Destin Harbor and Holiday Isle

The harbor on the bay side is the town’s working heart, with charter fishing fleets, dolphin and sunset cruises, waterfront restaurants and the HarborWalk Village boardwalk. Across the harbor, the Holiday Isle peninsula has condo towers on the Gulf and Norriego Point, a sandy spit at the tip with calm water on the harbor side. Great for anyone who wants boats and nightlife close by.

Central Destin and Henderson Beach

Along US 98 and Scenic Gulf Drive, beachfront hotels, condos and vacation homes line the sand, with Henderson Beach State Park as a green, undeveloped break. Shopping centers and the Destin Commons outdoor mall are inland. A good all-round base for families.

Miramar Beach and Sandestin

East of the city line, in Walton County, Miramar Beach has big condo resorts and outlet shopping, and the Sandestin resort has golf courses, a marina and its own village. Popular for longer family stays with pools and resort amenities.

Okaloosa Island and Fort Walton Beach

Across the Marler Bridge to the west, Okaloosa Island has beach parks, a fishing pier, the Gulfarium marine park and an undeveloped section of Gulf Islands National Seashore. Fort Walton Beach, on the mainland behind it, is a real working town with more affordable hotels and restaurants, close to the airport and Eglin Air Force Base.

Top things to see in Destin

Prices and rules below were checked on official sites in October 2026, unless we say otherwise; check again before you go.

Crab Island

Crab Island is not really an island but a large, shallow sandbar on the bay side of East Pass, just north of the Marler Bridge, where on summer days hundreds of boats anchor and families wade in clear, waist-deep water among floating food vendors and inflatables. It can only be reached by boat: rent a pontoon boat, join a tour or take a shuttle from the harbor. According to Okaloosa County, the sandbar lies in national seashore waters over state-owned submerged land, so businesses there need both a National Park Service authorization and a county licence, and county ordinances regulate alcohol and the anchoring of floating structures; check the current rules with your boat operator. Water depth changes with the tide, and the channel at the edges is deep, with strong currents near the pass, so keep children in life jackets and stay on the sandbar.

Henderson Beach State Park

More than a mile (1.6 km) of undeveloped beach and tall dunes in the middle of Destin, with boardwalks over the dunes, picnic pavilions, a nature trail and a campground just behind the beach. It is one of the best places in town to see the Emerald Coast as it once was. Entry is by a small per-vehicle fee, about $6 per car as of 2026; check the Florida State Parks site for current fees and hours.

Destin Harbor and charter fishing

Destin’s 100-fathom curve, where the sea floor drops to deep water, lies closer to shore here than almost anywhere else on the Gulf coast, which is why the town has one of the largest charter-fishing fleets in Florida. Half-day and full-day trips go after red snapper, grouper, amberjack and, further out, tuna and marlin, while “party boats” offer cheaper bottom fishing for beginners. Licensed charter boats generally cover their passengers’ fishing licences, but seasons and bag limits for species such as red snapper are set by state and federal regulators and change each year, so ask your captain. Evening dolphin cruises and pirate-ship trips leave from the same docks.

Okaloosa Island and Gulf Islands National Seashore

West of East Pass, the Okaloosa area of Gulf Islands National Seashore protects a stretch of natural dunes and calm sound-side water for picnics and paddling, while the county’s beach parks next door have lifeguards, showers and parking. The Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park, one of the oldest marine parks in the country, and the Okaloosa Island Pier are nearby.

More to see

  • Norriego Point: a sandy spit at the mouth of the harbor with calm water and views of the boats coming in.
  • James Lee Beach Park: a popular public beach access on Scenic Gulf Drive with showers and parking.
  • Destin History and Fishing Museum: the story of the fishing village and its families.
  • Air Force Armament Museum: aircraft and weapons from Eglin’s history, by the base gate near Fort Walton Beach.

Beaches and other things to do

Beach rules and safety

Much of Destin’s beachfront is privately owned behind the hotels and condos, so use the public accesses and state and county parks unless your accommodation has its own. Okaloosa County’s beach guide asks you to obey lifeguards, use the bins, bring no glass and leave pets at home: only service animals are allowed on its beaches. Check the flags every day. In the county’s words, double red flags mean the water is closed to the public; red means rip currents are present and going into the Gulf above knee depth is not advised; yellow means exercise caution; green is a calm, clear day; purple warns of dangerous marine life; and no flag means the beach is not guarded. Entering the water under double red flags can bring a fine of up to $500. Rip currents on this coast kill swimmers every year, including strong swimmers: if caught, float and swim parallel to the shore.

Red tide (an algal bloom that can irritate eyes and lungs and kill fish) occasionally reaches the Panhandle; check the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission’s red tide status, NOAA’s Gulf Coast harmful algal bloom forecast and the Florida Department of Health’s Healthy Beaches water-quality advisories before you go. Sea turtles nest here in summer, so keep lights off the beach at night and fill in holes before you leave.

On the water

Paddleboarding and kayaking are best on the calm bay side or early in the morning on the Gulf. Snorkelling is good around the jetties at East Pass on calm days, though currents in the pass are strong. Parasailing, jet skis and banana boats run from the harbor, and boat rentals by the hour or day are the easiest way to reach Crab Island. Big Kahuna’s water park is a summer favorite with children.

Day trips and onward travel

Scenic Highway 30A and South Walton

East of Destin, County Road 30A runs past a string of small, design-conscious beach towns: Seaside, the pastel New Urbanist town famous from the film The Truman Show, plus Grayton Beach, WaterColor, Alys Beach and Rosemary Beach. Grayton Beach State Park, with its dunes and coastal dune lake, is one of the most beautiful beaches in Florida. Rent a bike and ride the paved path along 30A.

Panama City Beach and Pensacola

Panama City Beach, with St. Andrews State Park and Shell Island, is about an hour east along US 98. West, Pensacola has a historic district, the National Naval Aviation Museum and Pensacola Beach, about 1¼ hours away. Inland, the clear spring-fed creeks of the Blackwater River State Forest are popular for canoeing and tubing.

Getting there and getting around

By air

The closest airport is Destin–Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS), which shares its runways with Eglin Air Force Base north of Fort Walton Beach; it has flights from many US cities, including on American Airlines and JetBlue, and the drive to Destin takes about 30–45 minutes, longer in summer traffic. Northwest Florida Beaches International (ECP), about 20 minutes from Panama City Beach according to the airport, is an hour or so east of Destin and has more routes at some times of year. Pensacola is a third option. Small private planes use Destin Executive Airport. Rental cars are at all airports, and rideshare and taxis are available.

Driving, traffic and tolls

US 98 is the main road through Destin and gets very congested in summer, especially on Saturdays, when vacation rentals change over, and around the Marler Bridge. From I-10, the north–south routes are SR 85 via Niceville and the Mid-Bay Bridge, which charges a toll, or US 331 to the east. Florida tolls are electronic and cash is not accepted at electronic toll points; SunPass and compatible transponders work, and in a rental car the rental company’s toll program applies, with its own fees. Parking at public beach accesses fills up early in summer.

When to go and how long to stay

Destin has a humid subtropical climate with real seasons: hot summers and cool winters with occasional frosts. The table uses NOAA’s 1991–2020 climate normals for the Destin–Fort Walton Beach airport weather station: average daily highs and lows, and days with at least 0.10 in (2.5 mm) of rain. Unlike peninsular Florida, winter is not a dry season here: cold fronts bring about 4.5–5 in (115–126 mm) of rain a month from December to April.

The airport averages about 55.4 in (1,406 mm) of rain a year. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with most activity from mid-August to mid-October, according to NOAA’s National Hurricane Center, and the Panhandle has had direct hits, such as Hurricane Opal in 1995. In the season, follow the National Hurricane Center and the National Weather Service, know your evacuation zone through Okaloosa County Emergency Management, obey evacuation orders and consider travel insurance.

Events worth planning around

  • March: spring break brings college students and families; book early.
  • June to August: peak season, with summer firework shows at the harbor and the busiest Crab Island days.
  • October: the month-long Destin Fishing Rodeo and the Destin Seafood Festival traditionally take place; check this year’s dates locally.

How long to stay: 4, 5 and 7 days

4 days: two beach days with an evening on the harbor, a morning fishing trip or dolphin cruise, and a pontoon day to Crab Island and Norriego Point.

5 days: add Henderson Beach State Park and Okaloosa Island with the Gulfarium. 7 days: add a day along 30A with Grayton Beach State Park and Seaside, and a day trip to Panama City Beach or Pensacola.

Where to stay in Destin and the hotel taxes

  • Harbor and Holiday Isle: for boating, restaurants and nightlife on the doorstep.
  • Scenic Gulf Drive and central Destin: beachfront condos and homes, good for families.
  • Miramar Beach and Sandestin (Walton County): large resorts with pools and golf.
  • Okaloosa Island and Fort Walton Beach: better value, close to the airport.

Destin is in Okaloosa County. On a hotel or vacation-rental stay of six months or less you pay 7% sales tax (the 6% state rate plus a 1% county surtax) and the county’s 6% tourist development tax, about 13% in total; the Okaloosa County Clerk of Court, which collects the tax, confirms the 6% rate. In Walton County (Miramar Beach, Sandestin and 30A) sales tax is also 7% and the tourist tax in south Walton is 5%, about 12%. Most rentals add cleaning fees, and resorts often charge resort and parking fees. Under a US Federal Trade Commission rule in force since 12 May 2025, mandatory fees such as resort fees must be included in the advertised total price (taxes may be shown separately), so compare total prices. Many vacation rentals in summer run Saturday to Saturday with a minimum stay.

Practical tips for Destin

  • Set your watch back: Destin is on Central Time, an hour behind Orlando.
  • Check the flags every day: and never swim under double red flags.
  • Book boats early: pontoon rentals and charters for summer weekends sell out.
  • Beat the traffic: avoid US 98 on Saturday afternoons and get to beach parking before 10:00 a.m. in summer.
  • Respect the dunes: walk on boardwalks; sea oats hold the dunes together.
  • Emergencies: call 911.

What to pack for Destin

Bring swimwear, a rash guard for children, a wide-brimmed hat, polarised sunglasses and plenty of sunscreen: the white quartz sand reflects a lot of light. Water shoes help at Crab Island and the jetties, and a dry bag protects phones on boats. Pack non-glass drinks containers for the beach, a light rain jacket for summer storms, motion-sickness tablets for offshore fishing, and warm layers from November to March, when evenings can drop to the 40s °F (around 5–9 °C).

Okaloosa County has ordinances regulating alcohol and floating structures at Crab Island, and Florida’s boating-under-the-influence laws apply to anyone at the helm. Check the current rules with your rental company or tour operator before you go.

What do the beach flags mean in Destin?

Double red: water closed. Red: rip currents, do not go above knee depth. Yellow: caution. Green: calm. Purple: dangerous marine life. No flag: no lifeguards on duty.

Are dogs allowed on Destin’s beaches?

No. Okaloosa County allows only service animals on its beaches. Glass containers are banned too.

What is the hotel tax in Destin?

About 13%: 7% sales tax plus Okaloosa County’s 6% tourist development tax, on stays of six months or less. In neighboring Miramar Beach and 30A (Walton County) it is about 12%.

Which airport is closest to Destin?

Destin–Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS), about 30–45 minutes’ drive. Northwest Florida Beaches International (ECP) near Panama City Beach is about an hour east and sometimes has cheaper fares.

When is the water warm enough to swim in Destin?

From about May to October, when air temperatures average 84–91 °F (29–33 °C) by day. From December to March the Gulf is chilly and most visitors only paddle.

Is Destin good for a family holiday?

Yes. Lifeguarded beach parks, shallow water at Norriego Point and Crab Island, dolphin cruises, the Gulfarium and a water park make it one of Florida’s best family resorts. Choose a condo with a pool and kitchen for longer stays.
