Santa Barbara Travel Guide

A stunning aerial view showcasing the iconic red tiled roofs of Santa Barbara, California.

Santa Barbara is a graceful seaside city about 95 miles (153 km) up the coast from Los Angeles, set between the Santa Ynez Mountains and a rare south-facing stretch of Pacific shore. After an earthquake in 1925 the city rebuilt itself in Spanish Colonial Revival style, so whitewashed walls, red-tile roofs and flowering courtyards line its main street, State Street. Visitors come for the Old Mission, the free view from the County Courthouse clock tower, the beaches and Stearns Wharf, the wine-tasting rooms of the Funk Zone, and day trips to the Santa Ynez Valley wine country and the Channel Islands. The climate is mild all year, nicknamed the “American Riviera.”

Santa Barbara neighborhoods: where things are

The city is compact: State Street runs from the foothills down to the beach and Stearns Wharf, with most sights within walking distance or a short bike ride.

Downtown and State Street

The historic center has shops, restaurants and paseos, little shaded courtyards and arcades off the main street. Several blocks of State Street are closed to cars, creating a pedestrian promenade with outdoor dining. The Courthouse, the Museum of Art and the historic El Presidio are here.

The Funk Zone and the waterfront

Between the railroad tracks and the beach, the Funk Zone is a former warehouse district of murals, galleries, wine-tasting rooms, breweries and casual restaurants, part of the Urban Wine Trail. Along Cabrillo Boulevard, palm-lined East and West beaches flank Stearns Wharf, and the harbor and breakwater lie to the west.

The Riviera, Montecito and Goleta

The Riviera neighborhood climbs the hillside above the Mission with views over the city and sea. Montecito, just east, is a wealthy enclave of estates, boutiques and Butterfly Beach. Goleta, to the west near the airport and the University of California campus, has more affordable hotels.

Top things to see in Santa Barbara

Prices and hours below were checked on the official sites in October 2026, unless we say otherwise; check again before you go.

Old Mission Santa Barbara

Founded in 1786 and known as the “Queen of the Missions,” the Mission’s twin bell towers and pink-and-cream facade overlook a rose garden on the edge of the foothills. The self-guided tour, with an audio guide in English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese and Korean, takes in the museum rooms, gardens, church and cemetery (the church and cemetery are sometimes closed for services). It costs $17 for adults, $15 for seniors 65+ and active military, $12 for ages 5–17 and is free for children 4 and under. Hours: Monday to Saturday 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m. and Sunday 12:30–5 p.m., with the last tickets sold at 4 p.m.

The Santa Barbara County Courthouse

Completed in 1929, this is one of the most beautiful public buildings in the country, with hand-painted ceilings, Tunisian tiles, a sunken garden and a mural room. Entry is free: it opens 8 a.m.–5 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m.–5 p.m. on weekends and court holidays (no entry after 4:30 p.m.; security screening). Climb the El Mirador clock tower, open daily until half an hour before closing, for a 360-degree view of red roofs, mountains and sea. Free docent tours, about an hour long, start in the Mural Room daily at 2 p.m. and on weekdays also at 10:30 a.m.; no reservation is needed.

Stearns Wharf and the beaches

Built in 1872, Stearns Wharf is the oldest working wharf in California, with seafood shacks, shops and a small sea center; you can drive onto it. East Beach, with volleyball courts, and West Beach are on either side, and a flat beachfront path runs for miles, perfect for bikes and surreys. Leadbetter Beach, by the harbor, is good for beginner surfing and paddleboarding. See our beaches and cycling guides.

Santa Barbara Zoo and MOXI

Set on a hill above East Beach, the small, leafy Santa Barbara Zoo charges $39.95 for adults (13+) and $29.95 for children aged 2–12 as of October 2026, with $2 off per ticket online and parking at $11; fall and winter hours are 9:30 a.m.–5 p.m. (last entry 4 p.m.). Downtown, MOXI, the Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation, is a hands-on science museum for families with a rooftop terrace, open daily 10 a.m.–5 p.m. for $25 (adults 13+) and $20 (children 2–12).

Wine tasting in the city

Santa Barbara County wineries have tasting rooms in town, many of them on the Urban Wine Trail around the Funk Zone, so you can taste Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah from the Santa Rita Hills and Santa Ynez Valley without driving. See our wine tasting guide.

Hiking in the foothills

The Santa Ynez Mountains rise just behind the city, and trails such as Inspiration Point, Seven Falls and Rattlesnake Canyon climb through chaparral and creek canyons to wide views over the city and the Channel Islands, 15–20 minutes’ drive from downtown. Start early: the slopes are sunny and hot in summer and fall, with little shade, and trails can close in fire weather. Near the Mission, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden shows California’s native plants along easy paths. See our hiking guide.

Day trips from Santa Barbara

Channel Islands National Park

Five wild islands offshore form one of the least-visited national parks, with sea caves, kayaking, hiking and the island fox found nowhere else. There is no entrance fee, but you need a boat or plane: the park’s boat concessioner, Island Packers, sails all year from Ventura Harbor and Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard, not from Santa Barbara itself; Ventura is about 30 miles (48 km) southeast. Santa Cruz Island is about an hour’s crossing from Ventura. There are no shops or services on the islands, so bring food and water. The park has mainland visitor centers in Ventura and Santa Barbara.

Santa Ynez Valley and Solvang

Over the San Marcos Pass, about 45 minutes inland, rolling hills hold dozens of wineries around Los Olivos, Santa Ynez and Los Alamos, and Solvang, a town founded by Danish immigrants, with windmills and bakeries. Arrange a designated driver or a tour.

Ojai, Ventura and further afield

The quiet valley town of Ojai is about an hour east. To the north, US 101 leads to San Luis Obispo and the south end of Big Sur; see our Big Sur travel guide. Los Angeles is about 2 hours south; see our Los Angeles travel guide.

Nearby destinations

Getting there and getting around

By air: Santa Barbara Airport (SBA), in Goleta about 10 minutes from downtown, has 28 daily nonstop flights to 13 destinations on Alaska, American, Delta, Southwest and United. Los Angeles (LAX) has far more international flights.

By train: the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner stops at the downtown station, two blocks from the beach, on some of its trips between San Diego, Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo; the scenic coastal ride from Los Angeles Union Station takes roughly 2.5–3 hours. A same-day Amtrak ticket also lets you ride MTD buses for free.

By car: Los Angeles is about 95 miles (153 km) away on US 101, around 2 hours without traffic but much more at rush hour; San Francisco is about 330 miles (530 km), 5.5–6 hours.

Buses: the Santa Barbara Metropolitan Transit District (MTD) charges $2.50 one way ($1.25 for seniors and young people) and $6 for a day pass as of October 2026, payable with exact change or by tapping a contactless card. The electric Downtown–Waterfront Shuttle, which links State Street, the Amtrak station, the beach, the zoo and the harbor, runs only in summer (in 2026, Friday to Sunday from May 29 to September 7). Downtown parking is in city lots, many with a free first 75 minutes.

When to go and how long to stay

Santa Barbara’s climate is mild and sunny, with warm, dry summers and cool, occasionally rainy winters. The table uses NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals for the Santa Barbara Airport station by the coast; downtown is a few degrees warmer in summer.

SeasonAverage high / lowRain per monthWhat it’s likeGood for

Summer (Jun–Aug)70–75 °F (21–24 °C) / 55–58 °F (13–14 °C)Almost none“June gloom” early, then warm and sunnyBeaches, cycling, events
Fall (Sep–Nov)74 °F falling to 69 °F (23–21 °C) / 56 °F falling to 44 °F (13–7 °C)0.1–1.3 in (2–32 mm)Warm and clear; occasional hot, dry windsEverything; harvest in wine country

The airport gets about 17 inches (438 mm) of rain a year, mostly from December to March. Hot, dry “sundowner” winds off the mountains can raise the wildfire risk in late summer and fall, and heavy winter rain after fires can cause dangerous debris flows in the foothills, as happened in Montecito in 2018. Follow local emergency alerts and check the AirNow air-quality map if a fire is burning.

Events worth planning around

  • February: the Santa Barbara International Film Festival brings screenings and stars to State Street’s historic theaters.
  • June: the colorful Summer Solstice Parade and festival.
  • Early August: Old Spanish Days, or Fiesta, with flamenco, markets and parades; hotels fill up and prices rise.

How long to stay: 2, 3 and 4 days

2 days: day one, the Old Mission in the morning, State Street and the Courthouse tower, then wine tasting and dinner in the Funk Zone; day two, a bike ride along the waterfront to Stearns Wharf, the zoo or MOXI, and sunset at the harbor. 3 days: add the Santa Ynez Valley and Solvang. 4 days: add a boat trip to Santa Cruz Island from Ventura.

Where to stay in Santa Barbara and the hotel taxes

  • Waterfront: hotels along Cabrillo Boulevard, across from the beach.
  • Downtown: boutique hotels and inns near State Street’s restaurants.
  • Montecito: luxury resorts and quiet estates.
  • Goleta and upper State Street: chain hotels and motels, usually better value.

Santa Barbara is expensive, especially on summer weekends. Room rates are quoted before tax. According to the City of Santa Barbara, hotels in the city charge a 12% transient occupancy tax plus a 2% Santa Barbara South Coast Tourism Business Improvement District assessment, so about 14% in total, as of October 2026. Montecito, Goleta and other areas set their own rates. Some resorts add daily resort fees, so compare total prices.
