Pattaya Travel Guide

High-rise buildings overlooking the ocean in Pattaya, Thailand, offering a panoramic view.

Pattaya is Thailand’s closest big beach resort to Bangkok, about 150 km (93 miles) southeast of the capital on the Gulf of Thailand: a city of high-rise hotels and condominiums wrapped around a curving bay, with a famous nightlife strip, family attractions, golf courses and islands a short boat ride offshore. It grew from a fishing village into a resort in the 1960s and 1970s and has a lively, sometimes brash reputation, but there is a lot more to it than Walking Street: the extraordinary wooden Sanctuary of Truth, the gardens of Nong Nooch, the quieter beaches of Jomtien, Wong Amat and Ko Lan, water parks and shows for families, and excellent seafood. Pattaya is easy to reach in about two hours from Bangkok and its airport, which makes it a popular weekend escape and a good first or last stop. The driest and most pleasant months are November to February; the rainy season runs from about May to October, with the most rain in September and October.

Pattaya’s areas and where to stay

Pattaya stretches along about 15 km (9 miles) of coast, from Naklua in the north to Na Jomtien in the south. Three long parallel roads, Beach Road, Second Road and Third Road (Sukhumvit Road further inland), run through the center.

Central and South Pattaya

The heart of the resort, along the 3 km (2-mile) main beach, with big hotels, malls such as Central Festival and Terminal 21, restaurants, and Walking Street, the nightlife strip, at the southern end. Convenient and busy; the beach itself is narrow and lined with deckchairs.

North Pattaya and Naklua

Quieter and more upmarket, with Wong Amat beach, some of the best beachfront hotels, the Sanctuary of Truth and good seafood restaurants on the Naklua waterfront.

Pratamnak Hill

The green headland between Pattaya Bay and Jomtien, with the Pattaya viewpoint, the Big Buddha at Wat Phra Yai, small coves such as Cosy Beach, and low-rise hotels. Peaceful, but you need transport to get around.

Jomtien and Na Jomtien

Jomtien’s long, straight beach, about 6 km (4 miles) south of the center, is more relaxed and popular with families, long-stay visitors and Thai weekenders, with water sports and seafood restaurants. Na Jomtien and Bang Saray further south have resorts, water parks and the floating market.

Top things to see in Pattaya

The Sanctuary of Truth

A vast temple-like building on the shore at Naklua, carved entirely from wood and covered with thousands of sculptures of gods and figures from Hindu and Buddhist mythology. Construction started in 1981, and carvers are still at work, so it is part museum, part workshop. Visits are guided; shoulders and knees must be covered. Go in the morning, when the light on the carvings is best, and allow two hours.

Pattaya Viewpoint and Wat Phra Yai

From the viewpoint on Pratamnak Hill you look over the whole curve of Pattaya Bay, especially pretty at sunset. A short walk away, Wat Phra Yai’s golden 18 m (59 ft) Big Buddha watches over the city from the hilltop.

Nong Nooch Tropical Garden

A huge botanical park about 20 km (12 miles) south of the city, with themed gardens, a dinosaur valley, orchid and cactus houses and cultural shows. You can easily spend half a day; tours include transport.

Ko Lan (Coral Island)

The best beaches near Pattaya are on Ko Lan, about 7 km (4 miles) offshore: Tawaen, Samae, Nual and Tien beaches have clear water and sand, with good snorkeling at the quieter ones. Public ferries take about 45 minutes from Bali Hai Pier at the southern end of Walking Street; speedboats take 15 minutes. Go on a weekday to avoid crowds, and catch the last ferry back in the late afternoon.

More classic sights

  • Wat Yansangwararam: a peaceful royal temple complex with buildings in several Asian styles, about 20 km (12 miles) south.
  • Khao Chi Chan: a giant outline of a seated Buddha inlaid in gold on a quarried cliff face, near Wat Yansangwararam.
  • Pattaya Floating Market: a built-for-tourists market on canals in Na Jomtien, with food from Thailand’s four regions.
  • Wong Amat beach: the city’s cleanest and calmest beach, in front of the Naklua resorts.
  • Cabaret shows: glamorous, long-running drag cabarets on Second Road with nightly performances.

Other things to do in Pattaya

Food and drink

Pattaya has a huge range of restaurants, from Thai street food on Soi Buakhao and the night markets to international food of every kind, reflecting its many long-stay residents from Europe, Russia, India and the Middle East. Seafood is the local specialty: grilled fish, crab, steamed mussels and tom yum goong at the Naklua and Jomtien seafood restaurants, or at the fishing village of Bang Saray to the south. The Thepprasit Night Market (Friday to Sunday) and Jomtien Night Market are good for cheap food and snacks.

Nightlife

Walking Street, closed to traffic in the evening, is Pattaya’s famous nightlife strip of bars, clubs, go-go bars and live-music venues, busy until the early hours. Beyond it, there are rooftop bars, beach clubs and quieter pubs along Jomtien and Pratamnak. Check prices and bills in bars, and see the safety notes below.

Families, water sports and golf

Pattaya has several big water parks, an aquarium, theme parks and wildlife attractions; check that animal attractions treat their animals well before you buy tickets. On the water, you can try parasailing, banana boats, kitesurfing at Jomtien, or diving at the islands and wrecks offshore. More than a dozen golf courses lie within an hour of the city. See our guides to diving and beaches.

Islands and diving offshore

Beyond Ko Lan, a chain of smaller islands lies off Pattaya: Ko Sak, Ko Phai and Ko Rin, partly under navy control, where day boats anchor for snorkeling. Divers head for the wrecks of HTMS Khram and HTMS Kut, former Royal Thai Navy ships sunk as artificial reefs near the islands, and for the reefs of the Samae San islands further south toward Sattahip. Visibility in the Gulf is lower than in the Andaman Sea, often 5 to 15 m (16 to 50 ft), but diving is possible all year, which makes Pattaya a handy place for a beginner course close to Bangkok. Book with dive shops affiliated with an international training agency, and ask about conditions on the day.

Pattaya’s quieter side

Away from the beach roads, Pattaya has a more local face: the fresh market and fishermen’s piers of Naklua in the early morning, Buddhist temples such as Wat Chaimongkhon in the center, Thai families picnicking under the trees at Lan Pho Park, and the rows of seafood restaurants on stilts at Bang Saray. Sunday mornings on Jomtien Beach Road bring joggers, cyclists and kite-flyers rather than partygoers.

Festivals

Pattaya celebrates Songkran later than most of Thailand: the local Wan Lai water-splashing days follow a few days after the national April 13–15 holiday, so the party lasts almost a week. On Loy Krathong (November 24 in 2026) people float krathongs on the beach and at Lan Pho Park in Naklua. The city also stages fireworks and music festivals on the beach, usually in the cooler months.

Day trips from Pattaya

  • Ko Samet: a national park island with white-sand beaches, about 1.5 hours by road to Ban Phe pier in Rayong, then 30–45 minutes by ferry.
  • Si Racha and Ko Si Chang: a seafront town known for its chili sauce, and a quiet island with a royal summer palace, 40 minutes north plus a ferry.
  • Bang Saen: a Thai-style beach resort with seafood stalls, popular with Bangkok families at weekends.
  • Bangkok: about 2 hours by road. See our Bangkok guide.
  • Chanthaburi: gem markets, a French-built cathedral and a riverside old town, about 2.5 hours east.

Getting there and getting around

From Bangkok and the airports

Most visitors arrive by road. Buses leave Bangkok’s Ekkamai (Eastern) and Mo Chit bus terminals throughout the day, and direct buses run from Suvarnabhumi Airport to Pattaya and Jomtien; the trip takes about 2 to 2.5 hours, depending on traffic. Private transfers, taxis and Grab cars cost more but drop you at your hotel. A single slow daily train of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) runs from Bangkok to Pattaya station on weekdays, an option for rail fans. U-Tapao Rayong–Pattaya International Airport (UTP), about 45 minutes south, has flights from some Thai cities and a few regional routes.

Around Pattaya

The cheapest way to get around is the songthaew or “baht bus”, a pickup truck with benches that loops along Beach Road and Second Road and runs to Naklua and Jomtien; flag one down, ride, and press the buzzer to stop, then pay the driver a small flat fare. Don’t get in an empty one and give a destination, or it becomes a private taxi at a much higher price. Grab and Bolt work well for cars and motorcycle taxis, with prices shown in advance. Scooters are widely rented; you need a motorcycle license and an International Driving Permit, and you must wear a helmet.

When to go and how long to stay

Pattaya is on the eastern shore of the Gulf of Thailand and is one of the drier parts of the country. The table uses the 1991–2020 normals of the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) for its Phatthaya (Pattaya) station, as submitted to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO): average daily highs and lows, total rain, and days with at least 1 mm of rain.

December30 °C (86 °F) / 23 °C (74 °F)12 mm (0.5 in), 2 daysDry and pleasant; busiest around Christmas and New Year

Pattaya gets about 1,110 mm (44 in) of rain a year, much less than Phuket or Ko Samui, and even in the rainy season showers are usually short. The sea in the Gulf stays fairly calm all year, so Pattaya and its islands are a good beach choice when the Andaman coast is stormy from May to October.

Practical tips for Pattaya

  • Baht buses: hail one going your way, and don’t hire an empty one unless you have agreed a price.
  • Beach chairs: deckchairs and umbrellas are rented by the day; some stretches of beach have chair-free days set by the city.
  • Long stays: Pattaya has many serviced apartments with weekly and monthly rates, but your stay must match your visa exemption or visa.
  • Cannabis and vaping: cannabis flower needs a Thai prescription, and e-cigarettes are illegal in Thailand.
  • Help: the Tourist Police (1155) speak English, and the TAT Contact Center (1672) answers tourist questions.

Safety

Pattaya is busy and generally safe, but it pays to be streetwise, especially at night.

  • Scams and bills: check prices and itemized bills in bars and restaurants, beware jet-ski operators who claim damage after a ride (photograph the machine first), and keep your passport in the hotel safe rather than leaving it as a deposit.
  • Road safety: traffic is heavy and scooter accidents are common, especially at night; wear a helmet, ride sober or take Grab.
  • Sea conditions: the Gulf is usually calm, but storms in the rainy season can raise waves and currents at Jomtien; obey the lifeguards’ flags and don’t swim far out where boats and jet skis operate.
  • Jellyfish: stings are uncommon but possible, especially after storms in the rainy season; carry vinegar and call 1669 if stung.
  • Heat: drink plenty of water and avoid the midday sun from March to May.
  • Nightlife: keep an eye on your drink and belongings, and use licensed transport after a night out.
  • Emergencies: call 1155 for the Tourist Police (English spoken), 191 for the police and 1669 for an ambulance.

What to pack for Pattaya

Swimwear, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses, sandals, light clothes, smarter clothes for rooftop bars, a cover-up for temples and the Sanctuary of Truth, and an umbrella from May to October. Thailand uses 220 V; sockets take both flat two-pin and round two-pin plugs.
