Kunming Travel Guide

A beautiful urban skyline with a traditional bridge spanning across a lake.

Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province in southwest China, is known as the Spring City: at about 1,890 m (6,200 ft) above sea level on a plateau near the Tropic of Cancer, it is mild all year, rarely hot and rarely freezing, with blue skies for much of the winter and flowers in bloom in every season. A modern city of more than 8 million people on the north shore of the large Dianchi Lake, it is the gateway to Yunnan, China’s most ethnically diverse province, home to 25 officially recognized minority peoples besides the Han. In the city, stroll around Green Lake Park, where thousands of black-headed gulls from Siberia spend the winter; explore the Yunnan Provincial Museum, the Buddhist Yuantong Temple and the old lanes around Nanqiang Street; and climb the Western Hills to the Dragon Gate, a path carved into the cliff above the lake. Ninety kilometers away, the gray limestone pinnacles of the Stone Forest are part of the South China Karst UNESCO World Heritage Site. Taste crossing-the-bridge rice noodles and, in summer, Yunnan’s famous wild mushrooms. Kunming is a hub for high-speed trains to Dali, Lijiang and the rest of China, and for the international railway to Laos, and its airport is a port for the 240-hour visa-free transit. Any time of year is good; March to May and September to November are the best.

Kunming’s areas and where to stay

Kunming is a large, spread-out city, but most visitors stay in the compact old center around Green Lake.

Green Lake and the university district

The streets around Green Lake Park (Cuihu) and Yunnan University are the most pleasant part of the city, with tree-lined lanes, cafés, bookshops, small restaurants and boutique and mid-range hotels. Yuantong Temple and the Yunnan Military Academy are within walking distance.

Nanping Street and the city center

Around Nanping Street, Jinbi Square and the Golden Horse and Jade Rooster Arches is the commercial center, with shopping streets, large hotels and metro connections. The restored Laojie (old street) quarter and Nanqiang Street, with old courtyard houses, bars and food, are just to the south.

Dianchi Lake shore

South and west of the center, hotels near Haigeng Dam and the Dianchi shore give lake views and easy access to the Western Hills, but are farther from restaurants and transport.

Chenggong and the stations

The new district of Chenggong, in the southeast, has universities and the Kunming South high-speed station; hotels here are convenient for an early train but far from the sights.

Where to stay in Kunming

  • Green Lake: the most pleasant base, walkable, with cafés.

Top things to see in Kunming

Green Lake Park

Green Lake Park (Cuihu Gongyuan), in the center, is a series of lakes, islands and causeways with willows, lotus in summer and locals dancing, singing and playing music. From about November to March, thousands of black-headed gulls that migrate from Siberia gather on the lake, swooping for food: Kunming’s favorite winter sight. Entry is free.

Yunnan Provincial Museum

The Yunnan Provincial Museum, in a striking modern building in the Guandu district, covers the bronze-age Dian kingdom, with its extraordinary bronze cowrie containers decorated with scenes of daily life, along with Buddhist art and the cultures of Yunnan’s peoples. Entry is free with real-name booking and your passport; closed Mondays.

Western Hills and the Dragon Gate

The Western Hills (Xishan) rise steeply above the western shore of Dianchi. Paths and a cable car lead past Taoist and Buddhist temples to the Dragon Gate (Longmen), a series of grottoes, statues and a narrow path carved into the cliff face by Taoist monks in the 18th and 19th centuries, with sweeping views over the lake.

Yuantong Temple

Kunming’s oldest and largest Buddhist temple, Yuantong Temple, dates back more than 1,200 years. Its central hall stands in the middle of a pond, reached by bridges, with a Thai-style hall at the back.

Dianchi Lake and Haigeng Dam

Dianchi, the sixth-largest freshwater lake in China, stretches about 40 km (25 miles) south of the city. Walk or cycle along Haigeng Dam on the eastern shore, where the gulls also gather in winter, and watch the sunset over the Western Hills.

More classic sights

  • Golden Temple (Jindian): a Taoist temple made of bronze in a pine forest northeast of the city.
  • Yunnan Nationalities Village: a cultural park on the Dianchi shore with villages, dances and food of Yunnan’s peoples.
  • Dounan Flower Market: one of the largest flower markets in Asia, busiest in the evening, in Chenggong.
  • Kunming Old Street and Nanqiang Street: restored courtyards, food stalls and bars.
  • Golden Horse and Jade Rooster Arches: twin archways in the center, rebuilt in traditional style.

Other things to do in Kunming

The Stone Forest

The Stone Forest (Shilin), about 90 km (56 miles) southeast of the city in Shilin Yi Autonomous County, is a maze of gray limestone pinnacles, some more than 20 m (66 ft) tall, rising in clusters from the red earth like a forest of stone, the result of 270 million years of erosion. It is part of the South China Karst UNESCO World Heritage Site. Paths wind through the narrow passages and up to viewing pavilions of the Major and Minor Stone Forests, with legends of the Sani, a branch of the Yi people, including the stone said to be the heroine Ashima. Electric carts link the gates and areas. Allow most of a day, and come early to avoid the tour groups. The Yi Torch Festival, held around the 24th day of the sixth lunar month (usually July or August), brings bonfires, wrestling and dancing to the Stone Forest. High-speed trains run from Kunming South to Shilin West station in about 30 minutes, then a shuttle bus; there are also direct buses from the city.

Food and drink

Kunming’s signature dish is crossing-the-bridge rice noodles (guoqiao mixian): a bowl of boiling chicken broth served with plates of thinly sliced meat, quail egg, vegetables and rice noodles that you add yourself, so they cook in the hot broth. Try steam-pot chicken (qiguoji), cooked in a special clay pot; Xuanwei ham; flower cakes (xianhua bing) filled with rose petals; grilled tofu; and the food of Yunnan’s Dai, Yi and other peoples. From June to September, wild mushrooms, from porcini to the prized “chicken-leg” termite mushroom, fill markets and hotpot restaurants. Drink Pu’er tea and Yunnan’s single-origin coffee.

Day trips from Kunming

  • Stone Forest: limestone pinnacles and Sani culture, about 30 minutes by high-speed train plus a shuttle, or 1.5 hours by road.
  • Jiuxiang caves: large caves with underground waterfalls and canyons, near the Stone Forest.
  • Jianshui: an old walled town with a great Confucian temple, Zhu family garden and famous grilled tofu, about 1.5–2 hours by train; best overnight.
  • Dongchuan Red Land: red-earth fields in patchwork colors, about 3–4 hours north; best overnight for sunrise.
  • Yuanyang rice terraces: the Hani rice terraces, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, about 5–6 hours south; best over 2–3 days, combined with Jianshui.
  • Fuxian Lake: a deep, clear lake about 1.5 hours south, with beaches and cycling.

Practical tips for Kunming

  • Use sun protection: at this altitude, the sun burns quickly even on cool days.
  • Book the museum: Yunnan Provincial Museum entry is free but needs real-name booking.
  • Go early to the Stone Forest: tour groups arrive mid-morning.
  • Eat mushrooms at reputable restaurants: some wild species are toxic if undercooked.
  • Carry your passport: for trains, museums, hotels and checks.
  • Plan trains ahead: trains to Dali and Lijiang fill up during holidays.

Safety

Kunming is a safe, relaxed city. Its altitude of about 1,890 m (6,200 ft) causes few problems, though some visitors feel short of breath or tired on the first day; the sun is strong all year. In the rainy season, wild mushroom poisoning is a recurring risk in Yunnan: eat them only at established restaurants, cooked thoroughly, and never pick your own. The Western Hills and Stone Forest paths have steep steps; watch your footing in the rain. Crowds are heavy at the Stone Forest, Green Lake and the railway stations during Golden Week (1–7 October), Chinese New Year and the May Day holiday. Watch your belongings in crowded areas and stations, and use official taxis or DiDi. Carry your passport for tickets and checks. In an emergency, call 110 for police, 120 for an ambulance and 119 for fire.

What to pack for Kunming

Layers for warm days and cool nights, a light jacket or fleece for winter evenings, sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen, a light rain jacket or umbrella for June to September, and comfortable walking shoes for the Stone Forest and Western Hills. China uses 220 V, with flat two-pin, round two-pin and angled three-pin sockets. See our rain jackets, hiking shoes and travel adapters guides.
