Khobar Travel Guide

A stunning view of Al Khobar's coastal architecture against a bright blue sea and sky.

Khobar (Al-Khobar) is a modern, easygoing city on the Arabian Gulf coast of Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, part of a metropolitan area with Dammam and Dhahran that grew up around the oil industry from the 1930s. Its long corniche of parks, cycling paths and seafront cafes is one of the most pleasant in the kingdom, and in 2025 its Bayfront beach became Saudi Arabia’s first to earn Blue Flag certification. Next door in Dhahran, the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture, known as Ithra, is the region’s cultural landmark, with exhibitions, a theater, cinema and library in a striking building of stacked, polished stones. Khobar is also the Saudi end of the King Fahd Causeway, the 25 km (16-mile) bridge-and-island link to Bahrain, which makes the city a busy weekend crossroads, and it is the gateway to the UNESCO-listed Al-Ahsa Oasis inland. Khobar city has a population of a few hundred thousand within a metropolitan area of more than a million. It has a hot desert climate with humid summers: winter highs are about 22–24 °C (71–75 °F), and from June to August average highs reach 43–44 °C (109–111 °F).

Khobar areas and who each one suits

The Khobar Corniche and Bayfront

The seafront has parks, gardens, walking, jogging and cycling paths, sports courts, play areas and barbecue spots, and Bayfront, a 100,000 m² (25-acre) development with a Blue Flag beach, restaurants and cafes. Hotels with sea views make it the best base for a short stay.

Central Khobar and King Fahd Road

The commercial center has malls, restaurants, shops and mid-range hotels, with easy access to the corniche and Dhahran.

Dhahran

Home to Saudi Aramco’s headquarters, Ithra and the King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Dhahran is greener and more spread out, with large business hotels and malls.

Half Moon Bay and the south

South of the city, the curving bay of Half Moon Bay has beach resorts, chalets and water sports, popular at weekends.

Dammam

The provincial capital, north of Khobar, has a corniche, King Fahd Park, the main train station and access to the airport.

Top things to see in Khobar

Khobar Corniche

The corniche runs along the Gulf with landscaped parks, shaded seating, lighting and paths for walking, running and cycling. It is busiest after sunset and at weekends, when families picnic on the lawns. Look out for the Khobar Water Tower, a city landmark on the seafront.

Bayfront beach

In June 2025, Bayfront became Saudi Arabia’s first beach certified under the international Blue Flag standards for environmental management, safety and service. The project includes public squares, a sports promenade, restaurants and cafes and designated areas for beach activities. Follow the posted rules on dress and swimming areas.

Ithra (King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture)

Opened in 2018 as an initiative of Saudi Aramco, Ithra in Dhahran has museums and galleries, a library, a theater, a cinema, an archive, a children’s museum and an energy exhibition, and has welcomed more than three million visitors. It runs a busy program of exhibitions, concerts and festivals, including the Ithra Winter season and celebrations for National Day; check its calendar and book tickets for performances and some exhibitions. The building itself, a cluster of rounded stones wrapped in steel tubes, is worth seeing at night.

King Fahd Causeway

The causeway crosses the Gulf for about 25 km (16 miles) to Bahrain, with an island midway that holds the border posts and a viewing tower. Even if you aren’t crossing, the approach offers views of the sea. If you are, see “Getting there and getting around” below.

Half Moon Bay

A sheltered bay south of Khobar with sandy beaches, resorts and water sports such as jet skis and kayaking. Weekdays are quieter.

Dhahran and the oil story

The discovery of commercial oil at Dhahran in 1938 transformed the Eastern Province and the whole kingdom, and the area around Khobar grew from small fishing and pearling villages into a modern metropolis. Ithra stands close to the site of the first productive well, and its energy exhibition explains the history and science of oil and the region’s changing landscape. Much of Dhahran remains a working company town with restricted compounds, so explore it through Ithra and the public districts.

Dammam Corniche and King Fahd Park

North of Khobar, Dammam’s corniche has long seafront lawns, a promenade and family entertainment, and King Fahd Park, one of the largest parks in the region, has lakes, gardens and walking paths. Both come alive in the evenings, especially in winter and during Ramadan nights.

Other things to do in Khobar

  • Khobar Season and winter events: festivals, light shows and concerts, often launched alongside Ithra’s winter program; in October 2025 the season opened with a show of more than 1,000 drones over Dhahran.
  • Dammam corniche and King Fahd Park: green spaces and seafront walks in the neighboring city.
  • Malls and dining: the Eastern Province has large malls and a lively dining scene, from seafood restaurants to specialty coffee.
  • Diving and boating: dive centers and marinas offer boat trips in the Gulf, though visibility is lower than in the Red Sea.
  • Desert outings: the dunes inland from Half Moon Bay are popular for evening drives with a guide.

Food and drink

The Eastern Province’s food blends Gulf, Najdi and South Asian influences. Try fresh Gulf fish such as hamour and safi, grilled or cooked in rice dishes, Al-Ahsa’s famous Khalas dates and its local sweets, and the region’s breakfasts of balaleet (sweet vermicelli with egg). Khobar has hundreds of restaurants, from Lebanese and Indian to international chains, and a strong cafe culture along the corniche and in Prince Turki Street’s dining district. Alcohol is prohibited in Saudi Arabia.

Day trips from Khobar

Al-Ahsa Oasis

About 150 km (93 miles) southwest, the Al-Ahsa Oasis, around the city of Hofuf, is one of the world’s largest palm oases and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2018, with springs, canals, the historic Qaisariya Souq, the Ibrahim Palace and the caves of Jabal Al-Qarah. Saudi Arabia Railways trains run from Dammam to Hofuf.

Bahrain

Across the King Fahd Causeway, Bahrain’s capital Manama, about an hour away without traffic, has the Bahrain National Museum, Bab Al Bahrain and the souq, and the Qal’at al-Bahrain fort. See our Bahrain and Manama guides.

Jubail

About 90 km (56 miles) north, the industrial city of Jubail has a long corniche, beaches and waterfront parks, a quiet alternative at weekends.

Nearby destinations

Getting there and getting around

King Fahd International Airport (DMM)

The Eastern Province’s airport lies north of Dammam, about 50–60 km (31–37 miles) from central Khobar, roughly 45 minutes by taxi. It has flights to Gulf, Asian and European cities and domestic routes across Saudi Arabia. Since early 2026, regional tensions have led to periodic airspace closures across the Gulf, so flights can be delayed, rerouted or canceled at short notice; check your flight with the airline and the airport’s status before you travel.

By train

Saudi Arabia Railways (SAR) trains link Dammam station with Hofuf (Al-Ahsa) and Riyadh, with economy and business classes; Riyadh is about four hours away.

King Fahd Causeway to Bahrain

The causeway is the only road link between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain. Before crossing, check that your Saudi visa allows exit and re-entry by land, and that you meet Bahrain’s entry rules. Rental cars need permission and insurance for Bahrain. Queues can be long on Thursday evenings, Friday and holidays. The causeway has closed at short notice at times, so check its status before you set off; the King Fahd Causeway Authority’s Jesr app shows waiting times.

Getting around

Taxis and ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Careem are the easiest way to get around, and a rental car is useful for Al-Ahsa and the beaches. Drive on the right, wear seatbelts and expect fast traffic on the highways between Khobar, Dhahran and Dammam.

When to go and how long to stay

November to March is the best time, with highs of about 22–30 °C (71–85 °F) and mild nights; occasional winter storms bring heavy rain. April and October are hot, around 34–37 °C (92–98 °F). May to September brings average highs of 40–44 °C (103–111 °F), high humidity near the sea and records above 50 °C (122 °F); spend the middle of the day indoors at Ithra or the malls, and go out after dark.

Safety in Khobar

Khobar is safe, with low crime and a large international community. The main risks are heat, traffic and strict laws.

  • Heat and humidity: from May to September, highs above 40 °C (104 °F) with high humidity are normal. Drink water, avoid the midday sun and walk the corniche after dark.
  • Dress codes: cover elbows and knees in public; swimwear is for beaches, resorts and pools, following posted rules.
  • Alcohol prohibition: alcohol is illegal in Saudi Arabia, and it is also illegal to arrive under its influence, including by the causeway.
  • Drugs and medicines: drug penalties are severe; controlled medicines need an SFDA clearance permit before you travel.
  • Photography: don’t photograph oil installations, military sites, government buildings or the border posts on the causeway.
  • Sea safety: swim at lifeguarded or designated beaches and watch for jellyfish in summer.
  • Floods: winter storms can flood roads and underpasses quickly.
  • Flight and causeway disruptions: since early 2026, regional tensions have led to periodic airspace closures across the Gulf, and flights can be delayed, rerouted or canceled at short notice; the King Fahd Causeway has also closed at short notice. Check your flight with the airline and the causeway’s status before you travel, and heed the Saudi Civil Defense early-warning alerts sent to phones.
  • Emergencies: call 911 for police, ambulance and fire, or 112 from a phone without a Saudi SIM card.

Practical tips for Khobar

  • Time zone: Arabia Standard Time (UTC+3) all year, the same as Bahrain, so there is no time change on the causeway.
  • Weekend: Friday and Saturday.
  • Money and plugs: cards work almost everywhere; VAT is 15%. Sockets are mostly type G (British three-pin) at 230 V.

What to pack for Khobar

Pack light, breathable clothes that cover elbows and knees, swimwear for resorts and Bayfront, sandals, a hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen.
