Mahé Travel Guide

Waves crashing on a rocky beach with palm trees under a bright blue sky.

Mahé is the largest island of Seychelles and the gateway to the whole archipelago: home to the international airport, the tiny capital, Victoria, and nearly 90% of the country’s people. It is also one of its most beautiful islands. A spine of granite mountains, cloaked in rainforest and rising to 905 m (2,969 ft) at Morne Seychellois, runs down its length, and around the coast are more than 60 beaches, from the long, lively sweep of Beau Vallon in the northwest to wild, palm-backed coves such as Anse Intendance and Anse Takamaka in the south. Mahé is about 27 km (17 miles) long and rarely more than 8 km (5 miles) wide, so you can drive around it in a day, but its winding mountain roads, quiet villages and endless bays reward a longer stay. Victoria has a lively market, a Hindu temple, a botanical garden with giant tortoises and a miniature clock tower; inland, trails climb through Morne Seychellois National Park; and offshore, the Sainte Anne Marine National Park protects reefs, turtles and islands within sight of the capital. Most visitors spend a few nights on Mahé before or after Praslin and La Digue. The calm months of April, May, October and November are often the best.

Mahé’s areas and who each one suits

Victoria and the east coast

The capital and the coast south to the airport, with Eden Island, a reclaimed marina island of apartments and shops, and the Inter Island Quay for ferries to Praslin and La Digue. The east coast is built up and has few good beaches, but it is convenient for shopping, ferries and flights.

Beau Vallon and the north

The north coast’s Beau Vallon is Mahé’s most popular beach, a long crescent of sand facing west, with hotels, guesthouses, dive centers, restaurants and a Wednesday night market. Nearby Bel Ombre and Glacis have hotels and coves. It suits travelers who want activity and the option to walk to dinner.

The west coast

From Port Glaud to Anse à la Mouche and Anse Boileau, the west coast is quieter, with sheltered bays, mangroves, resorts, villas and sunsets. Port Launay and Baie Ternay are marine national parks with excellent snorkeling.

The south

Mahé’s southern tip has the most dramatic beaches, including Anse Intendance, Anse Takamaka, Petite Anse and Police Bay, often with big surf from the trade winds, as well as some of the island’s most luxurious resorts and a scattering of guesthouses. It is beautiful and secluded, but you will need a car.

Top things to see on Mahé

Victoria

Seychelles’ capital is small enough to see in a morning. The Sir Selwyn Selwyn-Clarke Market is busiest on Saturday mornings, with fish, fruit, spices and crafts. The silver Clock Tower (Lorloz), a copy of one in London, stands at the main crossroads. Visit the brightly painted Arul Mihu Navasakthi Vinayagar Temple, the Catholic cathedral, and the Botanical Garden, with coco de mer palms, giant tortoises and fruit bats. Most shops close on Saturday afternoon and Sunday.

Morne Seychellois National Park

The park covers about a fifth of the island and protects the cloud forest of its highest mountains. Popular trails include Copolia, about an hour each way to a granite summit with views over Victoria and the islands; Morne Blanc, a steep climb to a cliff-edge viewpoint above the west coast; and the coastal path to Anse Major, a cove reachable only on foot or by boat. Look for pitcher plants, endemic orchids, sunbirds and tree frogs.

Sainte Anne Marine National Park

Just off Victoria, six islands and their reefs form one of the oldest marine parks in the Indian Ocean. Glass-bottom boats and snorkeling trips visit coral gardens with turtles and reef fish, often with a beach barbecue on Moyenne or Cerf island. A park fee is usually included in trip prices.

Beau Vallon

The island’s liveliest beach is long, sandy and good for swimming in calm conditions, especially from May to September, when it is sheltered from the trade winds. In the northwest monsoon, from about December to March, the sea can be rough and rip currents dangerous. On Wednesday evenings, the Beau Vallon night market sells Creole food and crafts.

The southern beaches

Anse Intendance and Anse Takamaka are spectacular beaches of white sand and granite backed by palms, with powerful surf in the southeast trade-wind season; swimming can be dangerous, so enjoy them from the sand when the sea is rough. Anse Royale on the east coast has a sheltered lagoon with good snorkeling, and Anse Soleil and Petite Anse on the west are small, calm coves.

Mission Lodge ruins and the Sans Souci road

High in the hills on the Sans Souci road, the ruins of Mission Lodge mark a 19th-century school for children freed from slave ships, with a viewing platform over the west coast; it was visited by Queen Elizabeth II in 1972. The road also passes the tea factory, with a shop and tastings.

Other things to do on Mahé

  • Diving: dive centers at Beau Vallon visit Shark Bank, Brissare Rocks, L’Ilot and the wreck of the Ennerdale, with turtles, eagle rays and whale sharks some years from about August to November.
  • Snorkeling: Port Launay and Baie Ternay marine parks, Anse Royale, Sainte Anne and L’Ilot off the north coast.
  • Rum and spices: the Takamaka Rum Distillery at La Plaine St. André, a restored plantation house with tastings, and Le Jardin du Roi, an old spice garden above Anse Royale.
  • Island trips: day trips to Silhouette and the other islands, and boat trips to the reefs off the north coast.
  • Fishing: deep-sea charters for sailfish, tuna and marlin.
  • Kayaking and paddleboarding: in sheltered bays on calm days.
  • Arts and crafts: studios and galleries of local artists around the island, and the Creole craft village at Anse aux Pins.

Food and drink

Mahé has the widest choice of restaurants in Seychelles, from beach shacks and takeaways selling Creole lunch boxes of fish curry, lentils and rice to fine dining at the resorts. Try grilled fish with sauce chien, octopus curry, ladob, breadfruit chips and fresh tropical fruit at the market. The Beau Vallon night market on Wednesdays and the cafés of Eden Island are good for evenings out. Supermarkets in Victoria, Beau Vallon and the larger villages stock supplies for self-catering, and wine and imported goods are expensive. Drink SeyBrew beer, Takamaka rum and fresh coconut water.

Day trips from Mahé

Praslin and La Digue in a day

With an early Cat Cocos ferry, you can reach Praslin in about 1 hour 15 minutes, visit the Vallée de Mai and Anse Lazio by taxi, and return in the evening; or continue to La Digue, rent a bicycle and ride to Anse Source d’Argent. It is a long, rushed day, and the crossing can be rough, so most travelers prefer to stay at least two nights on each island.

Silhouette Island

The third-largest granitic island, about 30 km (19 miles) northwest of Mahé, is almost entirely a national park, with forested peaks rising to 731 m (2,398 ft), a single resort and a small village. Day trips by boat include walks, snorkeling and lunch, depending on sea conditions.

Sainte Anne and the islands off Victoria

Moyenne, Cerf, Round and Sainte Anne islands lie a short boat ride from Victoria. Moyenne was famously owned by a British newspaper editor who lived on the island for decades and planted thousands of trees; it is now part of the national park, with giant tortoises and walking trails.

Bird and Denis islands

Small planes fly from Mahé to Bird Island and Denis Island, low coral islands at the edge of the Seychelles Bank, in about 30 minutes. Both have a single lodge, and most visitors stay a few nights rather than visiting for a day; Bird Island’s sooty tern colony is busiest from about May to October.

Getting there and getting around

By air and sea

Seychelles International Airport (SEZ) is on the east coast, about 10 km (6 miles) south of Victoria. Most international flights connect through the Gulf, Istanbul, Addis Ababa, Nairobi or Johannesburg, and Air Seychelles flies to Praslin many times a day. From the Inter Island Quay in Victoria, Cat Cocos ferries take about 1 hour 15 minutes to Praslin and continue to La Digue, according to the operator; book ahead and arrive 30 minutes before departure with your passport.

Getting around

  • By car: the easiest way to explore. Drive on the left; roads over the mountains are steep, narrow and winding, with hairpin bends, deep open drains and few barriers, and they become slippery in rain. Book a small car and drive slowly.
  • By bus: blue public buses cover most of the island cheaply from the terminal in Victoria, but they are crowded at peak times and most stop running by early evening.
  • By taxi: available at the airport, in Victoria and through hotels; agree on the fare if the taxi has no meter.
  • On foot: Victoria is walkable, and many trails start near main roads.

When to go and how long to stay

Mahé is hot and humid all year, with highs of 29–32 °C (84–89 °F) and warm nights. The northwest monsoon, from about December to March, brings the heaviest rain and humid, still weather, and makes the north and west coasts rougher. The southeast trade winds, from about May to September, bring drier, breezier weather, with rough seas on the south and east coasts. April and October to November usually bring calm seas and the best visibility for snorkeling and diving.

The table shows the 1991–2020 climate normals for Seychelles International Airport, on Mahé’s east coast, from the Seychelles Meteorological Authority via the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The mountains get considerably more rain than the coast.

Safety on Mahé

  • Swimming: conditions change with the monsoons. According to the UK government’s factual guidance, the west coast is often unsafe in the northwest monsoon (around December to March) and the east coast in the southeast trade winds (around May to September), and beaches at the southern tip are not suitable for swimming at any time. Beau Vallon can have dangerous rip currents in rough seas. Lifeguards are few; follow warning signs and ask locally.
  • Roads: mountain roads are narrow and winding, with steep drops and deep drains; drive slowly, and take extra care in rain and at night.
  • Hiking: start early, carry water and a phone, and stay on marked trails; visitors occasionally get lost.
  • Boats: use licensed operators and check life jackets are provided.
  • Theft: do not leave valuables on beaches or in cars.
  • Health: use repellent against dengue; the main hospital is in Victoria.
  • Emergencies: call 999 for police, ambulance and fire.

Practical tips for Mahé

  • Ferry days: leave plenty of time to reach the Inter Island Quay; traffic in Victoria can be slow at peak times.
  • Sunday closures: many shops and restaurants close on Sunday; stock up on Saturday morning.
  • Car rental: book ahead in high season, inspect the car carefully and check the insurance covers you on mountain roads.
  • Cash: ATMs are in Victoria, Beau Vallon and at the airport.
  • Beaches: all beaches are public; you can walk onto beaches in front of resorts.
