Short answer: the best time to visit the Dominican Republic is December to April, the driest and least humid season on the south and east coasts, where Punta Cana, La Romana and Santo Domingo are, with highs of about 28–31 °C (83–88 °F). Mid-January to March adds humpback whales in Samaná Bay. This is also high season, with the highest prices at Christmas, New Year, Carnival weekends and Easter; May, June and November are good-value alternatives, while June to November is hurricane season, wettest from August to October.
The Dominican Republic is warm enough to swim every month, so the choice is really about rain, storms, seaweed, crowds and what is on. This page goes through the weather and events month by month and coast by coast, as of October 2026. Dominican Republic weather month by month
Weather month by month
The table shows average daily highs and lows and monthly rain from the 1991–2020 climate normals that the Dominican weather service submitted to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), archived by NOAA. Temperatures barely change through the year: at Punta Cana airport, highs go from about 28.5 °C (83 °F) in January to 32 °C (90 °F) in August, and nights stay around 21–24 °C (70–76 °F). Rain is the real season marker, and it differs by coast. Punta Cana gets about 1,160 mm (46 in) a year, least in March, about 50 mm (2 in), and most from September to November, about 125–135 mm (5 in) a month. Santo Domingo is wetter, from 54 mm (2.1 in) in March to 195 mm (7.7 in) in August. On the north coast, Puerto Plata is the opposite: its wettest month is November, with about 258 mm (10.1 in), and its driest is June, with about 54 mm (2.1 in). Samaná is the rainiest of all, about 2,170 mm (85 in) a year, and greenest. Most rain falls in short, heavy showers.
Dominican Republic month by month
January
Warm, breezy and dry in the south and east, with highs around 28–30 °C (83–86 °F) and cool evenings; on the north coast, it is one of the rainier months. Pilgrims crowd the basilica in Higüey, near Punta Cana, for Our Lady of Altagracia on 21 January. Whale-watching season opens in Samaná in mid-January (the 2026 season ran from 15 January to 31 March), and the winter baseball league plays its finals in Santo Domingo. Resorts are at high-season prices.
February
One of the driest months everywhere, with about 59–63 mm (2.3–2.5 in) of rain in Santo Domingo and Punta Cana, and the best month for whales in Samaná Bay. Carnival fills the streets every Sunday, peaking around Independence Day on 27 February (a Saturday in 2027); La Vega’s carnival is the most famous. Presidents’ Day weekend brings extra North American visitors.
March
The driest month on the south and east coasts: about 50 mm (2 in) in Punta Cana and 54 mm (2.1 in) in Santo Domingo, with highs around 29–31 °C (84–87 °F). Whales are still in Samaná Bay until the end of the month. US spring breaks fill Punta Cana, and in 2027 Semana Santa (Holy Week) falls early, from Palm Sunday 21 March to Easter Sunday 28 March, when Dominicans head to the beaches and rivers and hotels and roads are full.
April
Still dry and sunny, with highs around 30–31 °C (86–88 °F) and calm seas. After Easter, prices start to fall, making it one of the best-value months of the dry season. Sargassum seaweed can start to reach east-facing beaches late in the month, and showers become more frequent at its end.
May
The first rainy month in the south: Santo Domingo gets about 151 mm (6 in) and Punta Cana about 129 mm (5.1 in), usually in afternoon storms, with plenty of sunshine in between. Prices are low, the hurricane season hasn’t started, and the sea is calm and warm, so it is a good month for diving at Bayahibe near La Romana.
June
Hot, with highs of 31–33 °C (88–92 °F), and the Atlantic hurricane season begins on 1 June, although early-season storms are uncommon. It is the driest month of the year in Puerto Plata, about 54 mm (2.1 in), and kitesurfing season gets going in Cabarete. Rates are still low until school holidays begin at the end of the month.
July
Hot and humid, around 32 °C (90 °F) on the coasts. Dominican and European families travel, so beach resorts get busier and prices rise again for a few weeks. The north coast stays relatively dry and breezy, good for Cabarete’s kite schools and Sosúa’s calm bay; sargassum is most likely on east-facing beaches in summer.
August
Among the hottest and wettest months on the south coast, with about 195 mm (7.7 in) of rain in Santo Domingo, and the start of the hurricane peak: according to NOAA’s National Hurricane Center, most Atlantic activity falls between mid-August and mid-October. Prices drop after the school holidays end late in the month.
September
The cheapest and quietest month, at the heart of hurricane season, with about 192 mm (7.5 in) of rain in Santo Domingo and 135 mm (5.3 in) in Punta Cana. Some small hotels close for a few weeks. Sargassum usually starts to ease: in 2026, one of the largest seaweed years on record, the University of South Florida reported amounts falling in September.
October
Still hot and wet, with the peak storm window lasting until mid-month; Hurricane Melissa brought days of flooding rain to Santo Domingo in late October 2025. Hotels are at their lowest rates, and the professional baseball season starts, with Licey and Escogido at Estadio Quisqueya in Santo Domingo.
November
The rainy season is ending in the south, while the north coast enters its wettest stretch: Puerto Plata’s November average is about 258 mm (10.1 in). Storms become less likely as the month goes on, and the hurricane season ends on 30 November. Prices are good until Thanksgiving week, and winter swells start to bring surf to the north coast.
December
Drier and breezier on the south and east coasts, with highs around 29–31 °C (84–87 °F) and lows near 21 °C (70 °F). High season starts in mid-December; Christmas and New Year are the most expensive weeks of the year, so book flights and resorts early. The north coast and Samaná are still showery.
Best time to visit by region
Punta Cana and Bávaro
Punta Cana is best from December to April, with highs of 28–30 °C (83–87 °F) and the least rain; March is the driest month. Summer and fall are hotter, cheaper and the main season for sargassum on this east-facing coast, which is among the most affected in the country. From January to March, long day trips go to Samaná for the whales.
Santo Domingo
Santo Domingo is most comfortable from December to April, when the Zona Colonial is pleasant for walking and evenings are fresher. February brings Carnival; October to January is baseball season. Summer is hot and humid, with heavy afternoon storms, and good for museums and evenings out.
La Romana and Bayahibe
La Romana follows the south coast pattern: December to April for dry weather and calm seas for the Saona and Catalina boat trips, summer for diving, and September and October for the lowest prices on golf and resorts. Boat trips are canceled when the navy closes the ports to small craft in bad weather.
Puerto Plata and the north coast
Puerto Plata is best in spring and early summer, from about March to July; June to September is its driest stretch, with highs near 33 °C (92 °F). November to January is the rainiest season, with winter swells good for surfers at Encuentro but rough for swimmers. Cabarete’s kitesurfing season peaks in summer.
The Samaná Peninsula
Samaná is best from mid-January to March for the whales, and from February to April for the driest weather, with highs of 30–32 °C (86–89 °F). It is the wettest part of the coast, with about 272 mm (10.7 in) of rain in November, so the waterfalls at El Limón are fullest in the fall.
Best time for whales, beaches, diving and Carnival
Whale watching
Mid-January to March in Samaná Bay, with the most activity in February and March. The 2026 season ran from 15 January to 31 March, and the environment ministry issues a limited number of permits to boats, so book with a licensed operator. Cruise ships also anchor in the bay in this season.
Beaches
Any month for warm water. December to March gives the driest weather and the least sargassum on the east coast; the north coast’s beaches are calmest in summer. In winter, Atlantic swells can bring strong waves and rip currents on the north and east coasts, so swim where there are lifeguards or a reef.
Diving and snorkeling
April to August, when the seas are calmest, around Bayahibe, Catalina Island and Saona on the south coast and Sosúa on the north. Diving goes on all year, but boats stay in port when storms threaten.
Kitesurfing and surfing
Kitesurfing in Cabarete is best from about June to August, when the trade winds are strongest. Surfers want November to March, when winter swells reach Encuentro and Macao.
Festivals
21 January for Our Lady of Altagracia in Higüey; every Sunday in February for Carnival, peaking around 27 February; Holy Week in March or April; and October to January for winter baseball in Santo Domingo, Santiago and other cities.
Seasons to plan around
- Hurricane season, 1 June to 30 November: most activity is from mid-August to mid-October, according to the National Hurricane Center. Even storms that pass offshore can bring days of heavy rain, flooding and landslides. If you travel then, buy travel insurance that covers weather, follow the NHC and the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (INDOMET), and keep plans flexible. As of 4 October 2026, the 2026 season had produced eight tropical storms and no hurricanes.
- Rainy season: about May to November on the south and east coasts, with the most rain from August to October; on the north coast, about October to January.
- Sargassum: floating seaweed reaches beaches mostly from about April to September, hitting east-facing Punta Cana hardest. Hotels rake it away each morning, and the north and south coasts are usually less affected.
- Holidays: Christmas to New Year, Carnival weekends in February and Holy Week (21–28 March 2027) fill hotels, flights and roads, and July and August bring family travelers.
How long to stay
Five days is a classic Punta Cana beach break; seven to ten days lets you add two or three nights in Santo Domingo’s Zona Colonial; ten to fourteen days covers Samaná and the north coast as well, ideally in whale season. In the rainy months, plan boat trips and outdoor days for the mornings. Our Dominican Republic travel guide has sample 5-, 7–10- and 10–14-day itineraries.
