Bohemian Switzerland Travel Guide

Breathtaking shot of Pravčická Brána, a stunning rock arch, beside a historic building surrounded by lush nature.

Bohemian Switzerland (České Švýcarsko) is the wild corner of the Czech Republic: a national park of sandstone towers, rock walls, deep gorges and forest on the Elbe, right on the German border, where it joins Saxon Switzerland to form one of Europe’s most spectacular sandstone landscapes. Its icon is the Pravčická brána, the largest natural sandstone arch in Europe; its most unusual experience is a ride in a flat-bottomed boat through the narrow gorges of the Kamenice river below Hřensko. The park has been through hard times: a huge forest fire in the summer of 2022, beetle-killed spruce forests and another fire in May 2026 have closed some trails, and the park warns of falling trees everywhere. Most of the highlights are open again, though, including the arch and both gorges. It is about two hours from Prague. Give it a long day, better two, and check the closures before you set off.

What’s open in 2026: fires, falling trees and closed trails

The park’s condition changes from season to season, so read this before planning a route. As of October 2026:

  • The 2022 fire. In July 2022, the largest forest fire in the country’s modern history burned more than 1,000 hectares around Hřensko, Mezná and Mezní Louka. The flames came close to the Pravčická brána and the Falcon’s Nest chateau, and many trails were closed for a long time. The burned slopes and the grey trunks of spruce killed earlier by bark beetles are still a striking sight.
  • The May 2026 fire. A new fire broke out on Saturday 2 May 2026 in the forest between Rynartice, Jetřichovice and Tokáň and burned about 100 hectares before hundreds of firefighters put it out; the area was handed back to the national park on 7 May. Afterwards, the town of Děčín listed several closed sections around the fire area: the path from Na Potokách to Jetřichovice, the blue trail from Druhá brána to Bor, the yellow trail from the Doubice car park to the Tokáň meadow and cycle route 3076. Check whether they have reopened before walking in the Jetřichovice area.
  • Long-term closures. The park lists several popular routes as closed because of fire damage and the risk of falling dead trees, including the Gabriela Trail (red) from Mezní Louka to the Pravčická brána, the Soorgrund gorge (yellow) and the blue trails to the Hadí pramen spring and the Černá brána arch.
  • Open highlights. The Pravčická brána (reached from Tři prameny, on the Hřensko side), the Divoká soutěska (Wild Gorge), the Edmundova soutěska (Edmund’s Gorge), the yellow Mlýnská cesta (Mill Trail) with its new “Fénix” viewpoint, and the Lynx Trail (Rysí stezka) at Mezní Louka.
  • Falling trees. The park administration warns of a high risk of falling trees across the whole park, and you enter at your own risk. Don’t hike in strong wind, stay on marked trails and respect closure signs.

The national park administration (npcs.cz) publishes an up-to-date map of open and closed routes; check it on the morning of your hike.

Top things to see in Bohemian Switzerland

Prices and hours below were checked on official sites in October 2026. They change, so check before you go.

The Pravčická brána

The Pravčická brána (Pravčice Gate) is the largest natural sandstone arch in Europe: a span of about 26 m, 16 m high, standing on a ridge above the forest. Walking on the arch itself has been forbidden since 1982 to protect it, but a network of steps and viewing platforms around it gives superb views of the arch and the rock towers. Below it stands the Falcon’s Nest (Sokolí hnízdo), a romantic chateau built in 1881 as a restaurant and still serving food and drink in season.

Getting there. As of October 2026, the arch can only be reached from the Tři prameny junction on the main road from Hřensko to Mezní Louka; the Gabriela Trail from Mezní Louka is closed. From Tři prameny, a steep, well-made path climbs about 2.5 km to the arch, roughly an hour on foot. Buses stop at Tři prameny, and there is limited parking in Hřensko.

Tickets and hours. Entry to the viewing area costs 125 Kč for adults and 50 Kč for children aged 6 to 14, students and over-65s; under-6s go free. From 28 March to the end of October it opens daily 10:00–18:00, and from November to March only on Fridays and at weekends, 10:00–16:00, weather permitting.

Edmund’s Gorge (Edmundova soutěska)

The lower gorge of the Kamenice river, above Hřensko, is a narrow, mossy canyon between sandstone walls, carved out as a tourist route in the 1890s with a path cut into the rock and a boat section where the walls drop sheer into the water. It was closed after the 2022 fire and reopened on 18 June 2026, now as a guided visit only. Groups of up to 25 people set off every hour, walk to the boat landing and ride the flat-bottomed boats about 960 m through the gorge and back, poled by a boatman with a line of jokes. As of October 2026, it runs daily 10:00–17:00 until 1 November 2026 and costs 350 Kč per person. Tickets are sold at the entrance on the day only and can sell out on busy days, so arrive early.

The Wild Gorge (Divoká soutěska)

Upstream, the Wild Gorge has a shorter boat ride through a narrower, wilder canyon, ending at a small waterfall. Reach it on the green trail from Mezná, which is on the bus route from Hřensko. In the 2026 season, according to local press, boats run from 1 April to 1 November, daily 9:00–17:30, for 200 Kč for adults and 100 Kč for children aged 3 to 15; no reservations are taken.

The Jetřichovice viewpoints

Near the village of Jetřichovice, a red-marked loop climbs to three rock viewpoints with wooden steps, ladders and railings: the Mariina vyhlídka, the Vilemínina stěna and the Rudolfův kámen, with views over a sea of forest. This area is close to the May 2026 fire zone; check that the trails are open before you go.

Hřensko

The tiny village of Hřensko, at the point where the Kamenice meets the Elbe, is the lowest point in the Czech Republic (about 115 m), with half-timbered houses squeezed between rock walls. It is the main gateway to the park and has restaurants, guesthouses and a row of market stalls aimed at German day-trippers.

Things to do in Bohemian Switzerland

Hiking

The park’s trails are marked in the Czech system of coloured stripes, and the sandstone landscape gives short, steep climbs, ladders and staircases rather than long ascents. A classic day combines the walk up to the Pravčická brána from Tři prameny with Edmund’s Gorge, or the Wild Gorge from Mezná. With more time, walk the Mill Trail and the Jetřichovice viewpoints, or cross into Germany for the Schrammsteine and the Bastei. See our hiking guide.

Cycling along the Elbe

The Elbe Cycle Route runs along the river from Děčín through Hřensko into Germany and on to Bad Schandau and Dresden, one of Europe’s most popular long-distance bike routes. See our cycling guide.

Climbing

Sandstone climbing has a long tradition here, with strict local rules (no metal protection in cracks, no magnesium chalk in many areas), and climbing is limited to permitted towers. Only climb with local knowledge or a guide.

Activities and best months

  • CyclingSuggested bike trips include Hřensko to Mezná on a road and then a natural path, a 35 km loop through the Kyjov Valley via Brtníky and Vlčí Hora, routes from Česká Kamenice, and the more demanding route 23 (Krušnohorská magistrála) from Děčín.
  • HikingThe destination's official site suggests hikes to the most beautiful places of the national park: Pravčická brána (Pravčice Gate), the romantic valley of the Kamenice river, the rock towns around Jetřichovice, and the Czech Road nature trail for families. Tourist bus line 434 links Děčín, Hřensko and Jetřichovice for one-way hikes.

Saxon Switzerland across the border

Bohemian Switzerland continues seamlessly into Germany as Saxon Switzerland National Park, with the famous Bastei rock bridge above the Elbe, the Königstein fortress and the Schrammsteine ridge. Trains from Děčín reach Bad Schandau in about 20 minutes, and boats and cycle paths follow the river. As of October 2026, the Bastei Bridge is open, but the Neurathen rock castle beside it is closed. Getting to Bohemian Switzerland

By train and bus. Direct EuroCity and regional trains run from Prague to Děčín in about 1 hour 30 minutes. From Děčín, bus 434 runs to Hřensko, Mezní Louka and Jetřichovice; other buses stop at Mezná and Tři prameny. Buses are more frequent in the summer season. Check the regional timetable before you set off, especially at weekends and outside the season.

By car. The drive from Prague takes about 1 hour 45 minutes via the D8 motorway (with an e-vignette). Parking in Hřensko and at Mezní Louka fills up early on summer weekends; arrive before 9:00.

From Germany. Trains from Dresden reach Bad Schandau in about 40 minutes and Děčín in about an hour; from Schmilka on the German side, a ferry crosses the Elbe toward Hřensko.

Rules in the national park

  • Visits are allowed only from 6:00 to 22:00; overnight stays, including wild camping and bivouacs, are banned except at sites approved by the park.
  • Fires are forbidden except in designated places, and smoking in the forest is dangerous; fire bans are strict in dry weather.
  • Stay on marked trails; many areas are protected zones.
  • Dogs must be kept on a lead.
  • Drones need permission.

When to go and how long to stay

The Elbe valley at Děčín is one of the lowest and mildest parts of the Czech Republic, but the gorges stay cool and damp even in summer. The table uses the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute’s 1991–2020 averages for Děčín.

SeasonAverage highAverage lowRain per monthWhat it’s like
Winter (Dec–Feb)3–6 °C−2 to −1 °C33–45 mmCold, foggy, icy paths; the arch opens only on Fridays and weekends; no gorge boats
Spring (Mar–May)10 °C rising to 21 °C1 °C rising to 9 °C29–56 mmFresh green forests, fewer visitors, gorge boats from April and June
Summer (Jun–Aug)24–26 °C12–14 °C61–82 mmWarm, busy at weekends, thunderstorms; cool in the gorges
Autumn (Sep–Nov)20 °C falling to 8 °C10 °C falling to 2 °C41–48 mmGolden beech woods and morning fog in the valleys; boats until 1 November

Děčín gets about 600 mm of rain a year. After heavy rain, rock steps and ladders are slippery.

Where to stay in Bohemian Switzerland

  • Hřensko: right at the gorges and the trailheads, with a few hotels and guesthouses; busy by day, quiet at night.
  • Mezná and Mezní Louka: small villages above the gorges, convenient for early starts.
  • Jetřichovice and Krásná Lípa: quieter bases on the eastern side of the park.
  • Děčín: a town with more choice, a castle and good train links, 20 minutes away.

Practical tips for Bohemian Switzerland

  • Check closures: the park’s website lists open and closed trails; they change often.
  • Start early: parking and the gorge boats are busiest from late morning on summer weekends.
  • Bring cash and a card: small kiosks and boats may prefer one or the other.
  • Avoid windy days: falling trees are a real risk in the burned and beetle-killed forest.
  • Respect the arch: stay on the viewing paths; climbing on the Pravčická brána is forbidden.

What to pack for Bohemian Switzerland

Sturdy hiking shoes with a good grip for sandstone steps and ladders, a rain jacket, a warm layer for the cool gorges, water and snacks (there are few places to eat on the trails), and a map or offline map app. In summer, bring insect repellent and check for ticks after walking.
