Levi Travel Guide

Breathtaking snow-covered forest landscape under a clear winter sky.

Levi is Finland’s biggest ski resort: a rounded fell rising above the village of Sirkka in Kittilä, in western Lapland, more than 170 km north of the Arctic Circle. Its slopes, most of them floodlit, open as early as October, and the resort hosts the first slalom races of the Alpine Ski World Cup every November. Around it are hundreds of kilometres of cross-country trails, husky and reindeer farms, snowmobile routes, and dark skies for the Northern Lights. In summer and autumn Levi turns into a hiking and biking base, close to the fells of Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, with the midnight sun in June and the bright ruska colours in September. Kittilä airport is a short transfer away. Give it four to seven days in winter, or three or four days for hiking.

Levi, area by area

Levi is part of Kittilä municipality, which, according to Statistics Finland, had just 6,797 inhabitants in August 2026, although tens of thousands of visitors stay here at peak times. The resort spreads around the fell in a few distinct areas.

Levi village and the Front Slopes

The village centre at the foot of the fell has hotels, apartments, restaurants, shops, the Levi Spa and the Zero Point base with ticket sales, rentals and ski school. The Front Slopes and the gondola rise straight from the village. Best for: staying without a car, après-ski and families.

South Point and the South Slopes

The sunnier southern side of the fell, with its own base, gentle family slopes and many log cabins and chalets. Best for: quieter stays, beginners and self-catering groups.

The fell top and the north side

Levi’s summit, at roughly 530 m, has wide views over the forests and lakes towards the Pallas and Ylläs fells, a few hotels and restaurants, and glass-roofed aurora cabins. The steeper slopes on the north and west sides are where the World Cup slalom is raced. Best for: views, Northern Lights and stronger skiers.

Top things to do in Levi

Prices and dates below were checked on Levi’s official websites in October 2026. Check snow and lift status on Levi’s “Ski Resort Today” page before you go.

Downhill skiing and snowboarding

According to Levi, the ski resort has 44 slopes and 26 lifts, most of them floodlit for skiing after dark, with terrain from long, gentle family runs to steeper pitches and terrain parks. Ski school runs at Zero Point, the Front Slopes, South Point and the South Slopes, with group and private lessons in English. The runs are short by Alpine standards, but the snow is reliable, the slopes are rarely crowded outside peak weeks, and skiing under the floodlights in the blue polar twilight is unforgettable.

Season 2026/27. Levi opened the alpine and cross-country season on 2 October 2026, on snow stored from the previous winter, with a few slopes and a cross-country loop. More slopes open as natural snow arrives in November and December. Levi describes its season as running from October through to May, with the core season, when everything is open, from December to March.

Lift pass prices 2026/27

As of October 2026, Levi’s official ticket shop lists these winter 2026/27 lift pass prices: one day €60 for adults (12–64) and €37 for children (6–11) and seniors (65+); two days €114 and €71; six days €269 and €159. Cross-country skiing

For many Finns, skiing means cross-country (hiihto). Levi has a large network of groomed trails for classic and skating technique, through forest and over the fells, many of them lit, with wilderness cafés and huts along the way. It is easy to rent gear and take a beginner’s lesson, and the trails start a short walk from the village. In April, the Ylläs–Levi long-distance ski event follows the trails between the two resorts.

Northern Lights and the polar night

Visit Finland gives the aurora season as late August to early April, and northern Lapland has some of the best odds in the country: according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute, as quoted by Visit Finland, auroras appear on up to three clear nights in four in the far north. Walk a few minutes out of the village lights, or join a snowshoe, snowmobile or reindeer-sleigh aurora tour. Around the winter solstice, roughly mid- to late December, the sun does not rise at all at Levi, but there is still a soft blue twilight around midday; Levi notes that daylight returns quickly from late January.

Safaris: huskies, reindeer and snowmobiles

Husky farms around Levi run everything from short rides to multi-day trips where you drive your own team and sleep in wilderness cabins. Reindeer farms offer sleigh rides and an introduction to herding, and snowmobile safaris follow marked routes across frozen lakes and through the forest (you need a driving licence to drive). Most safaris include thermal overalls, boots and mittens, and pick-up from your accommodation.

The FIS Alpine Ski World Cup

Levi traditionally opens the slalom season of the Alpine Ski World Cup. In 2026 the women’s and men’s slalom races are on 14–15 November 2026, under the floodlights. Accommodation fills up that weekend, so book early or avoid it if you want quiet slopes.

Summer, ruska and Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park

When the snow melts in May, Levi becomes a quiet base for the outdoors. Levi says the midnight sun shines from the end of May into July; summer brings fell hikes, mountain biking, canoe trips on the Ounasjoki river, golf between the fell and the river, and berry picking from late July. Mosquitoes are at their worst in July, so bring repellent. In early to mid September, the fells blaze red and gold in the ruska season, the best time of year for hiking, often with the first Northern Lights at night.

Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park, about an hour’s drive north-west of Levi, protects a chain of bare, rounded fells running some 100 km from Ylläs to Hetta. Covering roughly 1,020 km², it is Finland’s third-largest national park and one of its most visited. The classic hike is the Hetta–Pallas trail, about 55 km over the fells from Hetta in Enontekiö to Pallastunturi, usually done in three or four days with open wilderness huts along the way. Shorter day hikes start from the Pallastunturi visitor centre and from Äkäslompolo and the Kellokas visitor centre at Ylläs. In winter, the same area has some of Finland’s best cross-country skiing. Under Finland’s everyman’s rights, hiking is free, but in the national park campfires are allowed only at marked fire sites and never during a forest fire warning. See our hiking guide.

When to go and how long to stay

Levi has a cold subarctic climate, with snow on the ground from about October or November to May. The table uses the Finnish Meteorological Institute’s official 1991–2020 normals for Kittilä Pokka, the nearest station in the WMO collection, about 50 km north-east of Levi in the same municipality. Treat the figures as a guide to Levi rather than exact local values.
