Ninh Binh Travel Guide

Beautiful landscape of Ninh Bình with mountains and colorful town at sunset.

Ninh Binh, about 95 km (60 miles) south of Hanoi, is often called “Ha Long Bay on land”: a landscape of sheer limestone towers rising from rice paddies and slow rivers, where women row visitors in small boats through caves under the mountains. The heart of the area is the Trang An Landscape Complex, inscribed by UNESCO in 2014 as Vietnam’s first mixed natural and cultural World Heritage Site, which includes the river caves of Trang An, the rice fields of Tam Coc, the pagodas and temples of Bich Dong and Hoa Lu, the 10th-century capital of the Dinh and early Le dynasties. Add the viewpoint of Hang Mua, the giant Bai Dinh pagoda complex, bird sanctuaries and Cuc Phuong, Vietnam’s oldest national park, and Ninh Binh is easily worth two or three nights. The former city of Ninh Binh is now a group of wards, including Hoa Lu, and since 2025 Ninh Binh province has also taken in Ha Nam and Nam Dinh. The best times are from March to May and from September to November; Tam Coc’s rice fields turn gold in late May and early June.

Ninh Binh’s areas and where to stay

The main sights lie within about 15 km (9 miles) of each other, south and west of the old city center.

Tam Coc

The village of Tam Coc, about 7 km (4 miles) southwest of the old city, is the favorite base for visitors, with homestays, small hotels, bicycle rentals and cafés beside the river, surrounded by rice fields and karsts. It is the starting point for the Tam Coc boat trip and close to Hang Mua and Bich Dong.

Trang An and Hoa Lu

North of Tam Coc, the Trang An boat wharf and the Hoa Lu ancient capital are surrounded by quieter villages with homestays and boutique resorts among the mountains. A pedestrianized “old town” with lanterns and canal boats has been built near Hoa Lu, popular in the evening.

Ninh Binh old city

The former city center, now the wards around Hoa Lu, has larger hotels, the railway and bus stations, banks and local restaurants. It is practical and well connected but less scenic than the villages.

Van Long and the north

To the north, the Van Long wetland nature reserve has quiet boat trips through flooded valleys and a few eco-resorts.

Top things to see in Ninh Binh

Trang An boat trip

At Trang An, boats rowed by local boatwomen and boatmen follow three routes of about 2.5 to 3 hours through a maze of rivers, lakes and low caves cut through the limestone, stopping at island temples and a reconstructed film set. Each boat carries up to four or five passengers. According to the Trang An Landscape Complex Management Board’s 2026 price list, the Trang An eco-tourism area charges 300,000 VND (about US$11.50) for adults taller than 1.3 m (4 ft 3 in) and 150,000 VND for children 1 to 1.3 m tall; children under 1 m (3 ft 3 in) go free. Bring a hat and water, as there is little shade.

Tam Coc and Bich Dong

The Tam Coc (“Three Caves”) boat trip follows the Ngo Dong River through rice fields and three river caves, about 2 hours round trip. Rowers often paddle with their feet. Nearby, the Bich Dong Pagoda is built in three levels up a mountainside. According to the management board, the Tam Coc–Bich Dong ticket costs 250,000 VND (about US$9.60) for adults, or 350,000 VND including the electric shuttle between Tam Coc, Thai Vi temple, Tien cave and Bich Dong pagoda; children 1 to 1.3 m tall pay 120,000 VND (190,000 VND with the shuttle).

Hang Mua viewpoint

At Hang Mua (“Dancing Cave”), about 500 stone steps climb a karst peak topped by a stone dragon and a small shrine, with the best view over Tam Coc’s river and rice fields. Go at sunrise or late afternoon. The management board lists the entry fee as 150,000 VND (about US$5.80).

Hoa Lu ancient capital

Hoa Lu was Vietnam’s capital in the late 10th and early 11th centuries, under the Dinh and early Le dynasties, before the court moved to Thang Long (Hanoi) in 1010. Little remains of the citadel, but the temples dedicated to King Dinh Tien Hoang and King Le Dai Hanh stand in a beautiful valley. According to the management board, the entry fee is 20,000 VND for adults.

Bai Dinh Pagoda

Bai Dinh is one of the largest Buddhist complexes in Vietnam, built in the 2000s on a hillside northwest of Hoa Lu, with long galleries of 500 arhat statues, huge bronze Buddhas, a bell tower and a 13-story stupa, next to an older cave pagoda. Electric cars carry visitors from the parking area; the management board lists 150,000 VND for the round trip for adults.

More classic sights

  • Thung Nham bird garden: a reserve where thousands of storks and herons roost at dusk, with caves and boat trips; adult entry 150,000 VND.
  • Van Long nature reserve: quiet boat trips through flooded valleys, home to the rare Delacour’s langur; adult entry 100,000 VND.
  • Am Tien cave (Tuyet Tinh Coc): a hidden temple in a cave above a small lake; adult entry 100,000 VND.
  • Thien Ha cave and Thach Bich–Thung Nang: less-visited river and cave boat trips, with lower fees and fewer crowds.
  • Phat Diem Cathedral: a remarkable 19th-century cathedral built in Vietnamese temple style, about 30 km (19 miles) southeast.

Other things to do in Ninh Binh

Food and drink

Ninh Binh’s specialty is mountain goat (de nui), served grilled, steamed or rare with herbs, lime and sesame rice paper; and com chay, crisp cakes of scorched rice, often topped with a meat or vegetable sauce. Try also eel dishes, river fish and snails, and banh da rice crackers. Family restaurants in Tam Coc serve Vietnamese and international dishes.

Cycling

The flat, quiet roads between Tam Coc, Hang Mua, Bich Dong and the villages are perfect for cycling, and most homestays rent or lend bicycles. Early morning and late afternoon are the best times, when the light is soft and the heat lower. See our cycling guide.

Festivals

The Trang An Festival and the Hoa Lu Festival take place in spring, after Tet (February 6, 2027), with processions and boat parades; Bai Dinh Pagoda draws huge crowds of pilgrims in the first lunar month. The music and creativity festival “Forestival” has been held at Trang An.

Photography

The golden rice of late May and early June, the reflections on calm mornings, and the views from Hang Mua at sunrise are favorites with photographers. Drones need permission and are restricted in many areas.

Day trips from Ninh Binh

Getting there and getting around

By train

Ninh Binh Station, in the old city, is on the Reunification Express line, about 2 to 2.5 hours from Hanoi on daily trains, and on the route south to Hue, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City. Book on Vietnam Railways’ website, dsvn.vn. On September 28, 2026, Vietnam Railways and Ninh Binh’s tourism department ran a trial of a premium tourist train between Hanoi and Ninh Binh, with first-class and dining carriages, which they aim to develop into a daily service.

By road

Buses and limousine vans run from Hanoi’s Giap Bat and Nuoc Ngam bus stations and from the Old Quarter in about 2 hours on the expressway, and many go directly to Tam Coc. Day tours from Hanoi include transport, a boat trip, Hoa Lu or Bai Dinh, and lunch.

Getting around

Rent a bicycle for the area around Tam Coc and Hang Mua, and use Grab, taxis or a car with a driver for Trang An, Bai Dinh and farther sights. Motorbike rental is common, but you need a license valid in Vietnam (see Safety below).

Ninh Binh shares Hanoi’s climate: hot, humid and rainy from May to September, and cool, cloudy and often drizzly from December to February. The best periods are March to May, with green rice and mild weather, ending with the golden harvest around late May and early June at Tam Coc, and September to November, warm and drier, with a second rice crop ripening in September. Heavy summer rain can raise river levels and occasionally suspend boat trips. There is no long-term official climate station for Ninh Binh in the World Meteorological Organization’s (WMO) public lists, so the table uses the 1991–2020 climate normals for Hanoi, about 90 km (55 miles) north, from Vietnam’s National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF), as published by the WMO.

Practical tips for Ninh Binh

  • Go early: boats leave from about 7 a.m.; the first hours are cooler and quieter.
  • Tip the rowers: boat rowers work hard for modest pay; a tip of 50,000–100,000 VND per boat is customary.
  • Avoid weekends and holidays: Vietnamese visitors fill the boats and pagodas.
  • Bring a hat and sunscreen: there is little shade on the boats or at Hang Mua.
  • Stay overnight: a night in Tam Coc lets you see the landscape at dawn and dusk without the day-trip crowds.

Safety

Ninh Binh is calm and safe for visitors. On the water, boats are small and low; keep your hands inside the boat in the caves, sit still, and ask for a life jacket if one is not offered, especially with children. After heavy rain, rising rivers can close caves or suspend boat trips. The Hang Mua stairs are steep and uneven and can be slippery when wet; wear shoes with grip and avoid the midday heat. On the roads, watch out for trucks and tour buses on the main routes; helmets are compulsory on motorbikes, and riding one requires a license valid in Vietnam, such as an international driving permit issued under the 1968 Convention with your home license. Some vendors at Tam Coc’s boat stop follow boats to sell drinks and snacks; you can decline politely. In an emergency, call 113 for police, 114 for fire and 115 for an ambulance.

What to pack for Ninh Binh

A wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen and sunglasses for the boats; light, breathable clothes; shoes with grip for Hang Mua and the pagodas; a rain jacket from May to September; a warm layer from December to February; and clothes that cover shoulders and knees for temples. Vietnam uses 220 V, with sockets for flat (type A) and round (type C) two-pin plugs. See our rain jackets, hiking shoes and travel adapters guides.
