Ras Al Khaimah Travel Guide

Beautiful canal amid residential area with palm trees in Ras Al-Khaimah, United Arab Emirates.

Ras Al Khaimah, the northernmost of the seven emirates, combines the UAE’s highest mountains with long beaches, lagoon resorts and some of its oldest heritage sites. The Hajar Mountains rise straight behind the coast here, and the road up Jebel Jais climbs into cool air with a record-breaking zipline, mountain trails and viewpoints over the Gulf. Below, the city of Ras Al Khaimah is split by a creek into the old town and the newer district of Al Nakheel, and resorts line the beaches of Al Hamra and the artificial Al Marjan Island. History runs deep: this coast was home to the medieval port of Julfar, hilltop Dhayah Fort guards palm groves to the north, and Al Jazirah Al Hamra is one of the best-preserved abandoned pearling towns in the Gulf. The city itself is small, with about 116,000 people, and the emirate makes a relaxed alternative to Dubai, about an hour’s drive away. The climate is hot desert, with warm, sunny winters (November to March) and very hot summers; in winter the top of Jebel Jais can be cold enough for frost.

Ras Al Khaimah areas and who each one suits

Old Town and Al Nakheel

The city center lies on both sides of the creek: the Old Town on the western sand spit has the old fort that houses the National Museum, souks and the corniche, while Al Nakheel, across the bridge, is the commercial district with markets and malls. Simple hotels here suit budget travelers and those interested in local life.

Al Hamra

South of the city, Al Hamra has golf, a marina, a mall and beach resorts, next to the heritage town of Al Jazirah Al Hamra. Good for families and couples.

Al Marjan Island

Four connected artificial islands, about 25 minutes south of the city, with all-inclusive and beach resorts. A large integrated resort with a casino, the UAE’s first, is under construction here and is due to open in 2027. Stay here for beach-and-pool holidays.

Mina Al Arab and the mangroves

A residential and resort area on a lagoon with mangroves, beaches and a nature reserve, popular for kayaking and quiet stays.

Al Rams and the north coast

North of the city, the old fishing villages of Al Rams and Shaam sit between the mountains and the sea, with mangrove lagoons, the pearl farm and the road to Dhayah Fort. There are few hotels, but it is a rewarding drive for photographers and anyone curious about life outside the resorts.

The desert and the mountains

Inland, desert resorts and camps sit among red dunes, and lodges and campsites dot the road up Jebel Jais. Ideal for a night or two of quiet and stargazing.

Top things to see in Ras Al Khaimah

Jebel Jais

The Jebel Jais road winds up switchbacks into the Hajar Mountains, with viewing decks and picnic areas on the way. Near the top, the Jebel Jais Flight, one of the world’s longest ziplines, sends riders across the mountains at high speed, and the Jais Sledder is a mountain coaster. There are also a via ferrata, rope courses and hiking trails, a restaurant with views and a viewing deck park. Temperatures are often about 10 °C (18 °F) cooler than on the coast, which makes the mountain a summer escape, but winter nights can drop near freezing; bring a warm layer. Adventure activities have age, height and weight limits, and some close in strong winds or rain.

Al Jazirah Al Hamra

This former pearling and fishing town was abandoned in the 1960s and 1970s, leaving coral-stone houses, a fort, a mosque, a souk and wind towers standing among the sand. It gives a rare picture of Gulf life before oil. Walk the lanes in the early morning or late afternoon, and look for heritage festivals and night markets in winter.

Dhayah Fort

About 25 minutes north of the city, this restored 19th-century mud-brick fort sits on a hilltop above date palms, with steep steps to the top and views over the plain, the mountains and the sea. It is the UAE’s only hilltop fort and the site of a battle with British forces in 1819. Go in the cooler hours.

National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah

Housed in the old fort that was the home of the ruling family until the 1960s, the museum covers archaeology, pearling, traditional life and the region’s natural history. Check opening status before you go, as it has had long closures for renovation.

Pearl farming

At Suwaidi Pearls, a working pearl farm on the lagoon at Al Rams, boat tours explain the history of pearl diving and show how cultured pearls are grown, ending with an oyster opening.

Beaches and mangroves

Ras Al Khaimah has 64 km (40 miles) of coastline. The resorts of Al Marjan Island and Al Hamra have private beaches, and public beaches line the corniche and Flamingo Beach. Kayak or paddleboard through the mangroves near Mina Al Arab and the Al Qurm area.

Other things to do in Ras Al Khaimah

  • Hiking: marked trails on Jebel Jais, and wadi walks such as Wadi Shawka with pools after rare rains; start at dawn and carry plenty of water.
  • Desert camps: dune drives, camel rides and dinners under the stars at camps and desert resorts south of the city.
  • Golf: courses at Al Hamra and Tower Links.
  • Shimal archaeological sites: tombs and settlement remains linked to medieval Julfar, north of the city.
  • Musandam: cross into Oman’s Musandam peninsula for dhow cruises among fjord-like inlets from Khasab; you need an Oman visa and the right car insurance, and border rules change, so check before you go.

Getting the most from Jebel Jais

Go early in the morning for clear views before haze builds, or late afternoon for sunset, and book adventure activities online, as weekend and holiday slots sell out. Fill up with fuel before the climb, take a jacket in winter and keep to the marked parking areas and viewing decks along the road.

Food and drink

Ras Al Khaimah is known for fish, grilled or cooked into spicy saloona stews, and for Emirati dishes such as machboos and harees. Restaurants in the Old Town and Al Nakheel serve Indian, Pakistani and Arabic food at low prices; resorts offer international buffets. Alcohol is available in licensed hotels, restaurants and bars to people aged 21 and over. Bills add VAT and service charges.

Getting there and getting around

Airports

Ras Al Khaimah International (RKT) has flights to India, Pakistan and other regional destinations, mostly on low-cost carriers. Most international visitors fly into Dubai International (DXB), about 1 to 1.5 hours away; many resorts offer airport transfers. Since early 2026, regional tensions have led to periodic airspace closures across the Gulf, so flights can be delayed, rerouted or canceled at short notice; check your flight with the airline and the airport’s status before you travel.

Buses, taxis and driving

Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority runs intercity buses to Dubai and Sharjah and a limited city network, but most visitors rely on taxis, which are metered, or a rental car. Driving is the easiest way to reach Jebel Jais, Dhayah Fort and the beaches; the Jebel Jais road is steep and winding, so drive carefully and watch for fog and rockfalls after rain. Never drive after drinking any alcohol.

Ras Al Khaimah is safe and relaxed, with low crime. Take care with the heat, the mountain roads and the law.

  • Heat: the coast is extremely hot from May to September; carry water and avoid exertion in the middle of the day, even on hikes, which should start at dawn.
  • Mountains and wadis: trails are rocky and exposed with little shade; tell someone your route and carry a phone. After rain, flash floods can fill wadis in minutes; stay out of them when storms threaten.
  • Dress code and decency: cover shoulders and knees away from resorts and beaches; public kissing, swearing and rude gestures can lead to arrest.

  • Ramadan: don’t eat, drink or smoke in public during daylight hours.
  • Drugs and medicines: drug laws are severe, and some prescription medicines need approval from the UAE Ministry of Health before travel.
  • Photography: ask before photographing people, and avoid military and government sites; drones need permits.
  • Flight disruptions: since early 2026, regional tensions have led to periodic airspace closures across the Gulf, and flights can be delayed, rerouted or canceled at short notice. Check your flight with the airline and the airport’s status before you travel, and follow instructions from the local authorities, including emergency alerts sent to phones.
