Ajman Travel Guide

Aerial view of Ajman's urban skyline featuring highrise apartment buildings and busy streets.

Ajman is the smallest of the seven emirates, a compact coastal city just north of Sharjah and about 30 to 45 minutes from Dubai, known for a long, uncrowded public beach, good-value beach hotels and a relaxed, local atmosphere. The emirate covers only about 260 km² (100 square miles) on the coast, plus two small inland enclaves in the Hajar Mountains, Masfout and Manama. Its sights are modest but rewarding: a whitewashed 18th-century fort that now houses the Ajman Museum, a dhow-building yard where wooden boats are still made by hand, a busy fish market and the mangrove lagoons of Al Zorah, where you can kayak among herons and, in winter, flamingos. About 490,000 people live in the city, many of them commuters who work in Dubai and Sharjah. For visitors, Ajman works as a quiet, cheaper beach base for exploring the northern emirates. Unlike neighboring Sharjah, Ajman allows alcohol in licensed hotels. The climate is hot desert: warm and sunny from November to March, and extremely hot from May to September.

Ajman areas and who each one suits

Ajman Corniche

The heart of Ajman for visitors is the corniche, a seafront road with a promenade, cafes and a long public beach of soft sand, lined by beach hotels at its northern end. Ideal for a beach stay on a budget.

Old town and the creek

Inland from the corniche, the area around the Ajman Museum, the souks and the creek has older shops, the fish market and the dhow yard. Few hotels, but good for a walk.

Al Zorah

North of the city, Al Zorah is a mangrove-fringed lagoon development with a nature reserve, a golf course, a marina and a few upscale resorts. Choose it for nature, golf and quiet.

Al Nuaimiya and Al Jurf

Residential districts with malls, apartments and budget hotels, convenient for the highway to Dubai.

Masfout and Manama

Two small inland enclaves of Ajman in the Hajar foothills, about an hour away, with farms, forts and mountain scenery, near Hatta.

Top things to see in Ajman

A short history

Ajman grew up as a fishing, pearling and dhow-building village around its fort, ruled since the early 19th century by the Al Nuaimi family. Like its neighbors, it signed truces with Britain in the 1800s and joined the United Arab Emirates when the federation was founded in December 1971. With little oil, Ajman has relied on trade, its free zone, property and the growth of Dubai and Sharjah next door, which explains its many new apartment towers. The old fort, the creek and the boatyards still give a sense of the pre-oil town.

Ajman Museum

Housed in an 18th-century fort with a square watchtower, the former residence of the ruling family and later the police headquarters, the museum covers archaeology, pearling, traditional houses, crafts and weapons, with life-size dioramas of souks and rooms. Allow an hour or two.

Ajman Corniche and Beach

The public beach is long, clean and usually quieter than Dubai’s, with calm, warm water, shaded sections and lifeguards at set times. The promenade is popular for walks and cycling on winter evenings, when families come out for picnics and the cafes fill.

Al Zorah Nature Reserve

The mangroves of Al Zorah protect a lagoon full of birdlife, including herons, egrets, kingfishers and, in winter, greater flamingos. Join a guided kayak or paddleboard tour from the marina to glide through the channels, or walk the boardwalks. Go at high tide, early or late in the day, when birds are most active and the heat is lower; tours usually last one to two hours, and beginners are welcome. Bring binoculars if you have them.

Dhow yard

On the creek, craftsmen still build traditional wooden dhows by hand, with skills passed down through generations. Visitors can usually watch from a respectful distance; ask before taking photos of the workers.

Fish and vegetable markets

Ajman’s modern fish market, near the creek, bursts into life in the morning, when boats unload hammour, kingfish and prawns; some stalls will clean and cook your purchase at the restaurants next door.

Masfout

Ajman’s largest inland enclave lies in the Hajar foothills about an hour southeast of the city, next to Dubai’s Hatta. Its farms grow dates and vegetables, and a restored watchtower and fort look over a landscape of gravel plains, wadis and rocky ridges that feels far from the coast. Winter weekends bring families for picnics, camping and hiking; combine it with the Hatta dam and heritage village on the same day.

Ajman Marina and sunset

Take an evening boat ride from Ajman Marina or watch the sunset over the Gulf from the beachfront hotels’ terraces.

Other things to do in Ajman

  • Golf: an 18-hole championship course at Al Zorah, set among mangroves.
  • Water sports: jet skis, paddleboarding and kayaking from the beach hotels and the marina.
  • Shopping: City Centre Ajman and Ajman China Mall for budget shopping.
  • Masfout: drive to Ajman’s mountain enclave for farm visits, the Masfout fort and views of the Hajar Mountains, combining it with Dubai’s Hatta nearby.

Food and drink

Ajman’s food scene is local and inexpensive. Fresh fish grilled at the fish market restaurants is the classic meal, and the corniche has Lebanese, Turkish and Emirati restaurants and shisha cafes with sea views. Try luqaimat and karak tea from roadside stalls. Licensed hotels serve alcohol to people aged 21 and over; Ajman is the nearest place to Sharjah where you can have a drink.

Umm Al Quwain

About 20 minutes north, the quiet emirate of Umm Al Quwain has a mangrove-lined lagoon popular for kayaking, an old fort that houses a small museum, the archaeological site of Ed-Dur, one of the largest pre-Islamic settlements on the Gulf coast, and a large water park. It is one of the least developed emirates and feels like the UAE of a generation ago.

Getting there and getting around

Airports

Ajman has no airport. Sharjah International (SHJ), the hub of Air Arabia, is about 20 to 30 minutes away by taxi, and Dubai International (DXB) about 30 to 45 minutes outside rush hour. Since early 2026, regional tensions have led to periodic airspace closures across the Gulf, so flights can be delayed, rerouted or canceled at short notice; check your flight with the airline and the airport’s status before you travel.

Buses and taxis

Ajman Transport Authority runs city buses and intercity buses to Dubai, Sharjah and other emirates; services to Dubai stop at stations connected with the Dubai Metro. Taxis in Ajman are metered and cheap within the city; for Dubai, taxis are convenient but traffic on the Sharjah–Dubai roads is often heavy at rush hour (about 7 to 9:30 a.m. toward Dubai and 5 to 8 p.m. back).

Walking and cycling

The corniche promenade is flat and pleasant for walking and cycling from November to March, especially in the early morning and evening. Elsewhere, distances, heat and busy roads make walking hard work; use taxis between districts.

Driving

A rental car is useful for day trips to Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and the mountain enclaves. The E311 (Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road) and E611 highways link Ajman with Dubai while avoiding central Sharjah. Drive on the right, watch for speed cameras and never drive after drinking any alcohol.

When to go and how long to stay

November to March is the best time for the beach and sightseeing, with warm, sunny days and cool evenings; it is also the busiest and most expensive period. April and October are hot, about 35–37 °C (95–98 °F), but the sea is warm. May to September brings average highs of 40–43 °C (104–109 °F) and humid nights, when beach time is limited to early morning and evening.

Ajman has no long-term weather station of its own; the table below uses the nearest station, Sharjah International Airport, about 15 km (9 miles) away.

Events worth planning around

  • UAE National Day (2 December): celebrations and fireworks on the corniche.
  • New Year’s Eve: fireworks at the beach hotels.
  • Winter heritage events: markets and traditional sports displays in the cooler months.
  • Ramadan: in 2027 expected from about 8 February to 9 March; evenings on the corniche are lively.

Dates change each year; check with the organizers.

How long to stay: 1, 3 and 5 days

  • One day: the Ajman Museum, the dhow yard and fish market, then the corniche at sunset.
  • Three days: add kayaking at Al Zorah and day trips to Sharjah and Dubai.
  • Five days: add Ras Al Khaimah or Fujairah and plenty of beach time.

Where to stay in Ajman

  • Ajman Corniche: beach hotels with direct beach access, from mid-range to five-star.
  • Al Zorah: quiet resorts among the mangroves, near the golf course.
  • Al Nuaimiya and Al Jurf: budget hotels and apartments near malls and the Dubai highway.

Ajman’s beach hotels are often half the price of comparable Dubai hotels in winter. Bills add VAT, service charges and local fees.

  • Beach safety: swim where lifeguards are on duty and follow flags; currents can be strong in windy weather.
  • Roads: traffic toward Dubai is heavy and fast; cross only at pedestrian crossings, as jaywalking is fined.
  • Dress code and decency: swimwear is for the beach and pools; cover shoulders and knees elsewhere. Public kissing, swearing and rude gestures can lead to arrest.

  • Ramadan: don’t eat, drink or smoke in public during daylight hours.
  • Drugs and medicines: UAE drug laws are severe, and some prescription medicines need approval from the UAE Ministry of Health before travel.
  • Photography: ask before photographing people, especially women and families on the beach.
  • Flight disruptions: since early 2026, regional tensions have led to periodic airspace closures across the Gulf, and flights can be delayed, rerouted or canceled at short notice.
