Short answer: with 7 days, spend two nights in Copán Ruinas for the finest sculpture of the Maya world, then fly or take the ferry to Roatán for four nights of beaches, snorkeling and diving on the Mesoamerican Reef. With 10 days, break the journey with a night at Lake Yojoa and two on the rivers and rainforest of La Ceiba. With 14 days, add the colonial town of Gracias and Celaque National Park, and three nights on Utila, the laid-back island of dive courses and whale sharks. February to April is the best time for a trip that combines the ruins and the reef.
This guide turns the sample trips on our Honduras travel guide into day-by-day plans, with ferry times, the best area to sleep and what to book ahead. Copán and the mainland are driest from November to April; Roatán and the Bay Islands have their calmest seas and least rain from about February to August. Our best time to visit Honduras guide goes month by month, and our top 10 places to visit in Honduras explains each stop. For a plan built around your dates and interests, use our AI trip planner. The three routes at a glance
| Route | Days | Stops | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ruins and reef | 7 | Copán Ruinas (2 nights), Roatán (4 nights) | First trip, Maya history plus beach time |
| Copán to the Caribbean | 10 | Copán Ruinas (2 nights), Lake Yojoa (1 night), La Ceiba and the Cangrejal River (2 nights), Roatán (4 nights) | Nature lovers, rafting, birdwatching, a slower overland trip |

Fly into San Pedro Sula (SAP), the busiest airport and about three hours by road from Copán, and fly home from Roatán (RTB), which has direct flights to several US cities, many of them on weekends only. Booking open-jaw like this saves a long day of backtracking. Honduras uses Central Standard Time (UTC−6) all year.
Travel times between the main stops
These are the legs used in the plans below. The Roatán ferry timetable comes from the operator, Galaxy Wave; road times are approximate and depend on traffic and the weather. Travel by day, and use private shuttles or first-class bus companies for the longer road legs.
| Leg | How | Time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| San Pedro Sula airport – Copán Ruinas | Shuttle, first-class bus or car | about 3 h (approximate) | Road distance |
| San Pedro Sula – La Ceiba | Shuttle, first-class bus or car | about 3 h (approximate) | Road distance |
| Copán Ruinas – Lake Yojoa | Shuttle or car | about 4 h (approximate) | Road distance |
| Copán Ruinas – Gracias | Car or shuttle | about 3 h (approximate) | Road distance |
| Antigua (Guatemala) – Copán Ruinas | Tourist shuttle via the El Florido border | about 5–6 h (approximate) | Shuttle operators |
| La Ceiba – Roatán | Galaxy Wave ferry: leaves La Ceiba 9:30 and 16:30, Roatán 7:00 and 14:00 | about 1 h 15 (approximate) | Galaxy Wave (times); crossing time approximate |
| La Ceiba – Utila | Ferry, usually morning and afternoon | about 1 h (approximate) | Booking sites |
| San Pedro Sula or Tegucigalpa (Palmerola) – Roatán | Domestic flight | short flight; check schedules | Airlines |
| Roatán airport – West End or West Bay | Taxi | about 15–20 min (approximate) | Road distance |
The ferry crossing to the Bay Islands can be rough, especially from October to January, when cold fronts bring wind. Check in early, check large bags and take seasickness tablets if you need them. Domestic flights link Roatán with San Pedro Sula, Tegucigalpa (Palmerola), La Ceiba and Utila.
7 days: Copán and Roatán
Honduras’s two headline sights in one week. The only long day is day 3; a domestic flight from San Pedro Sula makes it shorter.
- Day 1, to Copán Ruinas: Land at San Pedro Sula and take a shuttle or private transfer west (about 3 hours). Evening on the Parque Central. Sleep: Copán Ruinas town (2 nights).
- Day 2, the Maya city: Walk about 1 km (15 minutes) to the archaeological park at opening time. Watch the scarlet macaws on the forest path, then the stelae of the Great Plaza, the Hieroglyphic Stairway, the Acropolis and Altar Q, and the ball court; finish in the cool Museum of Maya Sculpture. Las Sepulturas, included in the ticket, makes a quiet afternoon.
- Day 3, to Roatán: Either drive back to San Pedro Sula and fly to Roatán, or ride on to La Ceiba (about 6 hours via San Pedro Sula, so leave early) for the 16:30 Galaxy Wave ferry. Sleep: West End or West Bay (4 nights).
- Day 4, West End: Snorkel from the beach at Half Moon Bay, then a sunset drink on the sandy road.
- Day 5, reef day: Two morning dives or a snorkeling boat trip on the wall, then an afternoon on West Bay Beach, where coral grows right off the sand.
- Day 6, the east end: A tour to the mangrove canals near Oak Ridge and the Garifuna community of Punta Gorda, or the Carambola Botanical Gardens trail.
- Day 7, home: The airport is about 15–20 minutes from West End and West Bay. Divers should leave a full day without diving before flying.
Swap it: prefer budget dive courses and a backpacker scene? Go to Utila instead of Roatán: ferry from La Ceiba in about an hour. More detail on each stop is in our Copán Ruinas and Roatán guides.
10 days: from Copán to the Caribbean
This route crosses the country by road, with the lake, the waterfall and the rainforest rivers in between, so the long drive becomes part of the trip. Hire a driver, or use tourist shuttles and first-class buses.
- Days 1–2, Copán Ruinas: Arrive from San Pedro Sula, then a full day at the ruins, the tunnels and the sculpture museum. Add Macaw Mountain bird park if you have the energy. Sleep: Copán Ruinas (2 nights).
- Day 3, to Lake Yojoa: About 4 hours east. Afternoon at the 43 m (141 ft) Pulhapanzak waterfall, then sunset over the country’s largest lake. Sleep: on the lakeshore (1 night).
- Day 4, to La Ceiba: A dawn birdwatching boat on the lake, a coffee-farm stop, then on to the north coast. Sleep: a lodge in the Cangrejal River valley near La Ceiba (2 nights).
- Day 5, rivers and rainforest: White-water rafting on the Cangrejal River, or a hike in Pico Bonito National Park’s cloud forest, with swimming holes below the lodges.
- Day 6, to Roatán: The 9:30 Galaxy Wave ferry from La Ceiba. Afternoon snorkel at Half Moon Bay. Sleep: West End or West Bay (4 nights).
- Days 7–9, Roatán: Dives or a snorkel trip on the wall, West Bay Beach, the east end’s mangroves and Punta Gorda, and a day trip to the Cayos Cochinos marine reserve by boat tour.
- Day 10, home: Fly from Roatán, directly to the US or via San Pedro Sula.
Swap it: if you want a colonial city, swap Lake Yojoa for Comayagua, famous for its Holy Week sawdust carpets and close to Palmerola airport. Visiting in the second half of May? La Ceiba’s carnival, the Feria de San Isidro, is one of the biggest parties in Central America.
14 days: the western highlands and two islands
Two weeks lets you see the cool highlands of the west, the lake, and both of the main Bay Islands. It works best from February to April, when the mainland is dry and the sea is calming.
- Days 1–3, Copán Ruinas: The ruins and tunnels, Las Sepulturas, Macaw Mountain, a coffee farm or the Luna Jaguar hot springs, about an hour north, and a horseback ride to the hillside carved rock of Los Sapos. Sleep: Copán Ruinas (3 nights).
- Day 4, to Gracias: About 3 hours south-east to the colonial town of Gracias, with its fort and churches, and a soak in the hot springs outside town. Sleep: Gracias (2 nights).
- Day 5, Celaque National Park: Cloud-forest trails toward the country’s highest peak, or a visit to the Lenca villages and their pottery.
- Day 6, to Lake Yojoa: By road across the highlands. Sleep: on the lakeshore (2 nights).
- Day 7, Lake Yojoa: Birdwatching by boat, Pulhapanzak waterfall, coffee and kayaking.
- Day 8, to La Ceiba: Drive to the coast and an afternoon on the Cangrejal River. Sleep: La Ceiba or the Cangrejal valley (1 night).
- Day 9, to Utila: Morning ferry (about an hour). Sleep: Utila town (3 nights).
- Days 10–11, Utila: Start a dive course or go fun diving, swim off the cays, and look for whale sharks, most often seen from March to April and around September.
- Day 12, to Roatán: The early ferry back to La Ceiba, then the 9:30 Galaxy Wave to Roatán, or a short flight. Sleep: West Bay or West End (2 nights).
- Day 13, Roatán: West Bay Beach and a sunset cruise, or a last snorkel at Half Moon Bay.
- Day 14, home: Fly from Roatán.
Combine it with Guatemala: Copán is about 12 km (7 miles) from the El Florido border, and tourist shuttles run from Antigua in about 5 to 6 hours. Start with Antigua and Lake Atitlán, cross to Copán, and continue on this route. Honduras and Guatemala share the CA-4 agreement, a single permitted stay of up to 90 days for the four member countries, and Honduras may charge a US$3 fee in cash at land borders. See our Antigua and Lake Atitlán guides.
Where to sleep, by stop
| Stop | Best area for a short stay | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Copán Ruinas | The streets around the Parque Central, or a coffee-farm lodge outside town | Walk to the ruins, restaurants and tour agencies; quiet countryside if you have transport |
| Gracias | The colonial center | Small hotels near the plaza; the hot springs and Celaque are a short ride away |
| Lake Yojoa | The north and west shores | Lodges with boats, birdwatching and coffee; close to Pulhapanzak |
| La Ceiba | A lodge in the Cangrejal River valley, or near the ferry terminal for an early boat | Rafting and rainforest on the doorstep, or an easy morning crossing |
| Roatán | West End, West Bay or Sandy Bay | A walkable village with dive shops and restaurants; the best beach and resorts; quieter dive resorts |
| Utila | Utila town, along the main road by the water | Dive shops, guesthouses and restaurants within walking distance of the ferry |
Honduran hotels add about 19% in taxes to room rates. The currency is the lempira, about L26.89 to US$1 in early October 2026, but US dollars are accepted almost everywhere on Roatán, where many prices are quoted in dollars. Carry cash for the Copán tickets and for taxis.

Divers
Give the Bay Islands most of the trip: a dive course on Utila, among the cheapest in the Caribbean, then fun dives on Roatán’s walls and wrecks such as the El Aguila. March to August has the flattest water and clearest visibility. Both islands lie in the Bay Islands National Marine Park, and dive shops usually collect a small marine park fee; ask what is included. See our diving guide.
History lovers
Stay three nights in Copán Ruinas. Add the tunnels under the Acropolis, the regional museum in town and the smaller valley sites of Río Amarillo and El Puente (check with the Honduran Institute of Anthropology and History that they are open). Copán has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980, and its Hieroglyphic Stairway is the longest known Maya inscription. Then visit the colonial towns of Gracias and Comayagua. Foreign visitors pay US$20 for the main park and Las Sepulturas, US$15 for the tunnels and US$10 for the sculpture museum.
Hikers and nature lovers
Combine Celaque National Park near Gracias, Pico Bonito near La Ceiba and the birdlife of Lake Yojoa, and finish with a few beach days. November to April is the dry season on the mainland and the best time for the trails. See our hiking guide.
Families and beach lovers
Fly straight to Roatán and stay a week at West Bay, with calm, clear water and snorkeling from the sand, glass-bottom boats and a day trip to Cayos Cochinos. For a dose of history, add two nights in Copán with a domestic flight to San Pedro Sula. See our beaches and snorkeling guides.
Tips for planning your route
- Fly in and out of different airports. San Pedro Sula for Copán, Roatán for the trip home. Many direct US flights to Roatán run on weekends only, so set your dates around them.
- Time the ferry. Galaxy Wave leaves La Ceiba at 9:30 and 16:30 and Roatán at 7:00 and 14:00. Arriving from Copán the same day, aim for the 16:30.
- Travel by day. Use tourist shuttles, private drivers or first-class bus companies for the long road legs, and plan arrivals before dark.
- Visit Copán early. Arrive at opening time for cooler weather and soft light on the stelae; there is little shade on the plazas.
- Book the holiday weeks early. Holy Week (21 to 28 March 2027) and Christmas are the busiest, priciest weeks, and in early October Hondurans travel during the Morazán holiday week.
- Match the season to the route. February to April suits both the ruins and the reef. September and October bring the heaviest mainland rain and the storm peak; the islands’ rainiest, windiest months are October to January.
Honduras itinerary FAQ
Is 7 days enough for Honduras?
Yes for Copán and Roatán, with two nights at the ruins and four on the island. With 10 to 14 days you can add Lake Yojoa, La Ceiba’s rivers, Gracias and Utila.
Should I start in San Pedro Sula or Roatán?
Start in San Pedro Sula if you are visiting Copán, and end on Roatán so you finish on the beach. For a beach-only trip, fly straight to Roatán.
How do I get from Copán to Roatán?
Either back to San Pedro Sula (about 3 hours) and a domestic flight, or by road to La Ceiba (about 6 hours in all) for the 16:30 Galaxy Wave ferry, a crossing of about 1 hour 15 minutes.
Roatán or Utila?
Roatán for beaches, resorts, restaurants and direct flights home; Utila for budget dive courses, whale sharks and a backpacker village. With two weeks, visit both.
Do I need a car in Honduras?
No. Tourist shuttles, private drivers and first-class buses cover the mainland legs, and taxis, minibuses and water taxis get you around Roatán. Many visitors hire a driver for the Copán–Lake Yojoa–La Ceiba crossing.
How long should I spend at Copán?
Two nights, so you have one full day at the site. Allow three to four hours for the main park, and most of a day with the tunnels, the sculpture museum and Las Sepulturas.
Can I combine Honduras with Guatemala?
Yes. Tourist shuttles link Antigua with Copán Ruinas in about 5 to 6 hours via the El Florido border, and your time counts toward the shared CA-4 stay of up to 90 days. Belize’s cayes are a short flight from Roatán.
