Negril Travel Guide

A tranquil beach scene at twilight in Negril, Jamaica, featuring driftwood and a dramatic sky.

Negril sits at Jamaica’s western tip, about 1.5 hours from Montego Bay, and has two very different faces. North of the small town, Seven Mile Beach is a long, gently curving ribbon of pale sand and calm, shallow water, lined with low-rise hotels, beach bars and palm trees. South of town, the West End is a coast of low limestone cliffs, sea caves and ladders down into deep, clear water, with cottages and cliff-top restaurants famous for the island’s best sunsets. Negril grew from a fishing village into a hippie hideaway in the 1970s and keeps a relaxed, barefoot mood, with reggae nights, rum punch and snorkeling straight from the shore. Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Westmoreland, the same parish, in October 2025, but Negril bounced back fastest: most hotels reopened by January 2026. December to April is the driest time to visit.

Negril’s areas and who each one suits

Seven Mile Beach (Long Bay)

The famous beach runs north from the town to Bloody Bay, despite the name about 4 miles (6–7 km) of sand. The southern half has small hotels, guesthouses, beach bars and restaurants on the sand; the northern end and Bloody Bay are dominated by large all-inclusive resorts. Best for swimmers, families and anyone who wants to walk the beach every day.

The West End (the Cliffs)

South and west of town, along West End Road to the lighthouse: cliff-top cottages, boutique hotels, restaurants and bars built into the rocks, with ladders and platforms down to the sea instead of sand. Best for couples, snorkelers and sunset lovers; not ideal for small children or weak swimmers.

Negril town and the roundabout

The small center around the roundabout and the Negril River bridge has a craft market, banks, supermarkets and the taxi stands. Best for practical errands and local food.

Top things to see in Negril

Opening times and prices have changed after Hurricane Melissa; check with the venue or your hotel before you go.

Seven Mile Beach

The reason most people come: soft sand, warm, calm water protected by the reef, and a long beach you can walk for hours, stopping for jerk chicken, a Red Stripe or a massage. Beaches in Jamaica are public, but resorts control access to their own facilities; vendors sell everything from boat trips to braids, and a polite “no, thank you” works. The water is shallow and calm most of the year, and sunsets over the sea are spectacular.

The West End cliffs and sunset

The cliffs rise up to about 35 ft (10 m) above deep turquoise water. Cliff-top restaurants and bars, including Rick’s Café, the best-known, draw crowds every evening for sunset, live reggae and local cliff divers. Jumping is at your own risk: check the depth and the ladders, never jump after drinking, and don’t jump in rough seas.

Negril Lighthouse

The white lighthouse at the West End, built in the 1890s, marks Jamaica’s westernmost point. The grounds are sometimes open to visitors; it’s a good spot for the view and for snorkeling from the rocks nearby on calm days.

Booby Cay and the reefs

A small island off the north end of Seven Mile Beach, reached by short boat trips, with a quiet beach and snorkeling. The reefs off Negril and along the cliffs are part of a protected area; join a snorkel or dive trip from your hotel or a licensed operator, and don’t touch or stand on coral.

More to see

  • Royal Palm Reserve: a wetland reserve of native royal palms and birds in the Great Morass behind the beach.
  • Mayfield Falls: river pools and small waterfalls in the hills of Hanover, about an hour away.
  • Blue Hole (Brighton): a deep, freshwater swimming hole with jumping platforms, inland from Negril.
  • Half Moon Beach and Bloody Bay: quieter bays north of the main beach.

Other things to do in Negril

Snorkeling, diving and boat trips

Negril is one of Jamaica’s easiest places to get in the water. Snorkel from the West End’s ladders on calm days, or join a glass-bottom or catamaran boat trip to the reefs and Booby Cay. Dive operators run trips to reefs, caves and walls along the cliffs and off the beach. Respect the protected area’s rules, and wear a rash vest instead of extra sunscreen.

Beach life and water sports

The calm water of Seven Mile Beach is ideal for swimming, kayaking, paddleboarding and sailing. Parasailing and jet skis are offered all along the beach; choose operators recommended by your hotel and check their safety equipment.

Food, music and nightlife

Eat fresh fish, lobster in season, jerk from roadside drums, patties and ackee and saltfish. Evenings mean sunset on the cliffs, then reggae nights at beach bars, which rotate through the week. Negril is relaxed, but the beach and cliffs get busy at night in high season.

Beach safety and sargassum

Seven Mile Beach is usually calm, but conditions change after storms and in strong winds; swim near your hotel, stay clear of boat and jet ski lanes, and don’t swim at night or after drinking. Lifeguards are rare outside resorts. At the West End, enter and leave the water by the ladders and avoid swimming when waves hit the cliffs. Sargassum seaweed can wash up on Jamaican beaches mainly from spring to late summer; according to the University of South Florida’s Sargassum Watch, 2026 is at least the second-largest sargassum year on record, with record Caribbean amounts in June, though amounts were falling by September. West-facing Negril is usually less affected than Jamaica’s east and south coasts, and hotels rake their beaches.

Negril for families, couples and groups

Families do best on the middle and northern stretches of Seven Mile Beach, where the water is shallow and calm and the big resorts have kids’ clubs and lifeguards; the West End’s cliffs and ladders aren’t suited to small children. Couples love the West End’s cliff-top cottages, sunsets and quiet coves, and several Negril resorts are adults-only. Groups of friends often base themselves in the busy middle of the beach, close to reggae nights and beach bars. Wherever you stay, the walk along the sand at sunrise, before the vendors and boats start, is one of the best free things to do in Jamaica.

Day trips and onward travel

YS Falls, Black River and the south coast

About 1.5–2 hours east: the terraced waterfalls of YS Falls, boat safaris on the Black River to see crocodiles and mangroves, and the fishing villages of Treasure Beach. This area was among the hardest hit by Melissa and has recovered more slowly, so check what is open.

Montego Bay

About 1.5 hours north-east: the Hip Strip, Rose Hall Great House and Martha Brae rafting. See our Montego Bay travel guide.

Mayfield Falls and the Hanover hills

River walks and swimming holes in the hills, on guided tours.

Getting there and getting around

By air and road

Fly to Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay, which has direct flights from many US and Canadian cities and the UK, including Miami and Fort Lauderdale, then drive about 50 miles (80 km), around 1.5 hours, along the coast road. Most hotels sell transfers; licensed taxis and shuttle companies also run from the airport. Complete the free online C5 form at enterjamaica.gov.jm before you fly. Small charter planes also land at Negril Aerodrome, near the beach.

Getting around Negril

Seven Mile Beach is easy to walk, and Norman Manley Boulevard runs behind it. Licensed tourist taxis and route taxis (shared taxis that pick up along the road) link the beach, town and the West End; agree fares first and ask which currency. Scooter rentals are offered, but roads are narrow and driving is fast; wear a helmet, or skip it. Knutsford Express coaches link Negril with Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Kingston.

When to go and how long to stay

Negril is hot all year, with a dry, breezy winter and a wetter late summer and autumn. There is no official 1991–2020 summary for a Negril station, so the table uses the nearest official one: the WMO normals for Sangster International Airport, Montego Bay, about 50 miles (80 km) away, submitted by the Meteorological Service of Jamaica. Negril’s temperatures are similar.

Hurricane season and Hurricane Melissa: according to NOAA’s National Hurricane Center (NHC), the Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. Hurricane Melissa made landfall near New Hope in Westmoreland, south-east of Negril, on 28 October 2025 as a Category 5 hurricane, the strongest on record in Jamaica; the NHC lists Westmoreland and Hanover among the parishes with extreme, widespread damage. Negril’s recovery has been the fastest in western Jamaica: the Jamaica Information Service reported that by January 2026, 43 Negril hotels were open and 11 closed. As of October 2026, the Jamaica Tourist Board lists most Negril properties as open, including Beaches Negril, Couples Negril, RIU Negril and Sandals Negril, with a few smaller hotels still closed; confirm your hotel before booking. As of early October 2026, the 2026 season had produced eight tropical storms and no hurricanes, according to the NHC.

How long to stay: 3, 4 and 5 days

3 days: day one, Seven Mile Beach and sunset at the West End; day two, a snorkel trip to the reefs and Booby Cay, then reggae night on the beach; day three, the lighthouse, cliff-top lunch and a swim from the ladders.

4 days: add a day trip to YS Falls and the Black River, or Mayfield Falls. 5 days: add a dive or a trip to the Blue Hole and Montego Bay.

Where to stay in Negril and the hotel tax

  • Seven Mile Beach (south and middle): small hotels and guesthouses on the sand, walkable to bars and restaurants.
  • Bloody Bay and the north end: large all-inclusive resorts.
  • The West End: cliff-top cottages and boutique hotels, for couples and snorkelers.

According to Tax Administration Jamaica, hotel rooms carry 10% General Consumption Tax (the tourism rate) plus the Guest Accommodation Room Tax of US$1, US$2 or US$4 per occupied room per night, depending on whether the property has up to 51, 51–100 or 101 or more rooms, as of October 2026. Small Negril hotels usually pay the US$1 rate. Check whether quoted prices include taxes and service charge.

Practical tips for Negril

  • C5 form: fill it in online before you fly; it’s free.
  • Cash: carry Jamaican dollars for taxis, jerk stands and beach vendors; ATMs are in town and at larger hotels.
  • Cliff jumping: only in calm seas, sober, and where locals jump.
  • Vendors: on the beach you’ll be offered tours, crafts and more; a friendly but firm “no, thank you” is enough.
  • Night: take a taxi between the beach and the West End after dark rather than walking.
  • Emergencies: call 119 for police and 110 for fire and ambulance.

What to pack for Negril

Pack swimwear, a cover-up, flip-flops and water shoes for the West End’s rocks and ladders, a hat, sunglasses and reef-friendly sunscreen. Bring your own mask and snorkel, a dry bag, insect repellent for the evenings near the morass, a light rain jacket from May to November, and a light layer for breezy winter nights. Keep a copy of your C5 confirmation.
