Ocho Rios, “Ochi” to locals, is a busy resort and cruise town on Jamaica’s north coast in the parish of St Ann, about halfway between Montego Bay and Port Antonio. Its name comes from the Spanish Las Chorreras, “the waterfalls”, and water is the theme here: rivers tumble out of the hills straight into the sea, and the most famous of them, Dunn’s River Falls, is a staircase of limestone terraces you climb hand in hand from the beach. Around the town are swimming holes such as the Blue Hole, the rainforest bobsled of Mystic Mountain, the green tunnel of Fern Gully, and the homes of Noël Coward and Ian Fleming along the coast to the east. Bob Marley’s birthplace at Nine Mile is in the hills behind. Ocho Rios was less damaged by Hurricane Melissa than the west of the island, and most hotels and attractions are open. December to April is the driest time to visit.

Ocho Rios’s areas and who each one suits
Town center and Turtle Beach
The compact center around the clock tower, Main Street and the cruise pier, with Island Village’s shops, craft markets, restaurants and the public Turtle Beach. Best for short stays and cruise passengers; busy on ship days.
Mammee Bay and the west
West of town toward Dunn’s River and Runaway Bay, large all-inclusive resorts and quieter beaches. Best for resort holidays and families.
The east: Boscobel and Oracabessa
East of town, villas, small hotels and luxury retreats, Ian Fleming International Airport at Boscobel, and the coast of Oracabessa, with Firefly and Goldeneye. Best for couples and travelers who want calm.

Further west, smaller beach resorts, golf and the Green Grotto Caves, about 30–45 minutes from town. Quieter and often cheaper.
Top things to see in Ocho Rios
Prices and hours change often; check official sites or with your hotel before you go.
Dunn’s River Falls
Jamaica’s most famous waterfall cascades about 600 ft (183 m) down a series of travertine terraces straight onto the beach, according to the park’s official site, which calls it “one of Jamaica’s national treasures”. Visitors climb up the falls in human chains led by park guides, wading through cool pools and over slippery rocks; it takes about an hour. The park, run by the state Urban Development Corporation (UDC), has lockers, changing rooms, food stalls, a zipline, a kids’ splash pad and craft markets. Wear water shoes with grip (you can rent them), bring a waterproof bag for your phone, and go early in the morning or on a day with few cruise ships in port.
The Blue Hole (Island Gully Falls)
In the hills south of town, a series of turquoise pools and waterfalls where you can swim, jump from ledges and swing on ropes, with local guides. It’s less crowded than Dunn’s River and more natural; follow the guides and only jump where they show you.
Mystic Mountain
A rainforest adventure park on the hill above town, reached by a chairlift with views over the bay, with a Jamaican bobsled ride through the trees (a nod to the country’s famous Olympic team), ziplines and a pool.
Firefly and Goldeneye
East of town, Firefly was the hilltop home of playwright Noël Coward, with sweeping views of the coast and his simple house and grave; it is managed as a heritage site. Nearby Goldeneye, in Oracabessa, is where Ian Fleming wrote the James Bond novels, now a luxury resort. James Bond Beach is close by.

Other things to do in Ocho Rios
Beaches and water sports
Ocho Rios’s beaches are smaller than Negril’s: Turtle Beach in town, the beach at Dunn’s River, Mahogany Beach and the resort beaches of Mammee Bay and Runaway Bay. Resorts offer kayaks, paddleboards and sailing. Snorkeling and diving trips visit reefs and walls along the coast, and boat trips include catamaran cruises from the town to Dunn’s River Falls, glass-bottom boats and sunset sails.
Hiking and nature
Guided hikes lead to waterfalls and swimming holes in the hills, and gardens such as Shaw Park and Coyaba show off the island’s plants and birds. Trails are slippery after rain; go with a guide.
Food and music
Try jerk at the roadside stands, fresh fish at the beach shacks, patties and a fresh coconut. Reggae and music tours to Nine Mile are popular, and many resorts host live bands and dancehall nights.
Beach safety and sargassum
Most Ocho Rios beaches are calm and protected, but watch for boats in the harbor, keep away from jet skis, and swim where locals do. At waterfalls and rivers, conditions can change fast after heavy rain upstream; don’t climb or swim when water is high and brown. Sargassum seaweed reaches Jamaica’s north coast mainly from spring to late summer; according to the University of South Florida’s Sargassum Watch, 2026 is at least the second-largest sargassum year on record, with record Caribbean amounts in June, though by September amounts were falling. Hotels clean their beaches.
Day trips and onward travel

About 1.5 hours south on the toll highway: the Bob Marley Museum, Devon House and Port Royal, or a coffee-farm tour in the Blue Mountains.
Montego Bay and Falmouth
About 1.5–2 hours west: Falmouth’s Georgian streets, the Luminous Lagoon and Montego Bay’s Hip Strip. See our Montego Bay travel guide.

Norman Manley International Airport (KIN) in Kingston is about 1.5 hours away via the North–South toll highway.
