Montego Bay Travel Guide

Scenic view of Montego Bay with lush palm trees and turquoise waters, perfect summer getaway.

Montego Bay, “MoBay” to Jamaicans, is the island’s tourism capital and second city, spread around a wide bay on the north-west coast. Most visitors arrive here at Sangster International Airport, just minutes from the Hip Strip, the lively stretch of Gloucester Avenue with its bars, jerk joints, craft shops and Doctor’s Cave Beach. Big resorts line the coast east of town toward Rose Hall, the great house of legend, and the city makes an easy base for rafting on the Martha Brae, swimming at night in the glowing Luminous Lagoon, and day trips to Negril and Ocho Rios. Hurricane Melissa hit the parish of St James hard in October 2025; the airport, the cruise port, most businesses and many hotels reopened within months, while several large resorts are being rebuilt and reopen from December 2026 into 2027. December to April is the driest time to visit.

Montego Bay’s areas and who each one suits

The Hip Strip (Gloucester Avenue)

The tourist heart of town, between the airport and downtown: Doctor’s Cave Beach and other beach clubs, small hotels, bars, restaurants, souvenir shops and nightlife. Best for first-timers who want to walk to the beach, food and bars. It can be noisy, and vendors are persistent.

Downtown

The working city, with Sam Sharpe Square, named after the leader of the 1831 Christmas Rebellion against slavery, the crafts market, churches and busy streets. Interesting with a guide, but most visitors only pass through.

Rose Hall and Ironshore

East of the airport, along the coast toward Falmouth, big all-inclusive resorts, golf courses, villas and the Rose Hall and Greenwood great houses. Best for resort holidays; you’ll need taxis or tours to get anywhere. Several of the large resorts here were damaged by Melissa and are reopening from late 2026 into 2027.

West of the bay: Reading and Hopewell

Quieter coastal areas west of town toward Negril, with villas, smaller resorts and luxury estates such as Round Hill and Tryall. Best for a quiet stay with a car or driver.

Top things to see in Montego Bay

Prices and hours change often after the hurricane; check official sites or with your hotel before you go.

Doctor’s Cave Beach

Montego Bay’s most famous beach, on the Hip Strip, a crescent of white sand and calm, clear water, run as a members’ bathing club that charges visitors an entrance fee and rents chairs and umbrellas. It got its name in the 1920s when a doctor claimed the water had healing powers. Nearby Aquasol Beach and the public Dead End Beach, near the airport runway, are cheaper alternatives.

Rose Hall Great House

An 18th-century plantation house on a hill east of town, restored and furnished, and famous for the legend of Annie Palmer, the “White Witch of Rose Hall”, told on day and evening tours. The house is a reminder of the island’s slave-plantation history. Greenwood Great House, further east, has an excellent collection of antiques and musical instruments.

Montego Bay Marine Park

Created to protect the reefs, seagrass and mangroves of the bay, the marine park covers the coast from the airport to the west of town. Snorkel and glass-bottom boat trips leave from the Hip Strip and hotels. Don’t touch or stand on coral or buy coral and shell souvenirs.

Sam Sharpe Square and downtown

The square, with its statues of Sam Sharpe and his followers and the old Cage, an 18th-century lock-up, is the place to learn about the 1831–32 Christmas Rebellion that helped end slavery in the British Empire. Go with a guide to make the most of downtown.

More to see

  • Martha Brae River rafting: drift down a jungle river on a bamboo raft poled by a raftsman, about 30–40 minutes east near Falmouth.
  • Luminous Lagoon: a bioluminescent lagoon near Falmouth where the water glows when you move through it at night.
  • Falmouth: a Georgian port town with a cruise pier and historic buildings.
  • Bellefield Great House and other estates: plantation tours, food and history in the hills.

Other things to do in Montego Bay

Beaches and water sports

Montego Bay’s beaches are mostly small and calm, inside the reef: Doctor’s Cave, Aquasol, Dead End Beach and the resort beaches at Rose Hall and Ironshore. Resorts offer kayaks, paddleboards and sailing. Snorkeling and diving trips visit the marine park’s reefs and walls; boat trips include catamaran party cruises, glass-bottom boats and sunset sails.

Food and nightlife

Eat jerk chicken and pork at roadside jerk centers, patties, fresh fish and ackee and saltfish for breakfast. The Hip Strip is the center of nightlife, with bars, beach parties and live music; in July, Reggae Sumfest brings big-name reggae and dancehall artists to the city.

Golf and adventure

Rose Hall, Ironshore and the west of the bay have championship golf courses, and adventure parks inland offer ziplines, horseback riding and ATV tours, though some reopened only after Melissa repairs.

Beach safety and sargassum

Montego Bay’s beaches are mostly sheltered by the reef, but swim only in marked areas, stay clear of boats and jet skis, and watch for currents after storms. Lifeguards work at some beach clubs and resorts. Sargassum seaweed reaches the north coast mainly from spring to late summer; according to the University of South Florida’s Sargassum Watch, 2026 is at least the second-largest sargassum year on record, with record Caribbean amounts in June, but by September the amounts were falling. Montego Bay usually sees less than the east and south coasts, and resorts and beach clubs rake their beaches.

Day trips and onward travel

Negril

About 1.5 hours west along the coast road: Seven Mile Beach and the West End cliffs for sunset. See our Negril travel guide.

Ocho Rios and Dunn’s River Falls

About 1.5–2 hours east on the North Coast Highway: climb Dunn’s River Falls, swim in the Blue Hole and ride Mystic Mountain’s bobsled. See our Ocho Rios travel guide.

Falmouth, the Martha Brae and the Luminous Lagoon

Half an hour east: combine Georgian Falmouth, rafting on the Martha Brae and an evening boat ride on the Luminous Lagoon.

Nine Mile and the Cockpit Country

Bob Marley’s birthplace and mausoleum at Nine Mile, in the hills of St Ann, is a long day trip; the Cockpit Country’s limestone hills and caves are a wilder option, best with a guide.

Cruise ships dock at the Montego Bay Freeport, a few miles west of the Hip Strip, and at Falmouth, about 30 minutes east. Taxis and tour buses meet ships; agree prices before setting off.

Hurricane season and Hurricane Melissa: according to NOAA’s National Hurricane Center (NHC), the Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October. Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Westmoreland, south-west of Montego Bay, on 28 October 2025 as a Category 5 hurricane, the strongest on record in Jamaica, and the NHC lists St James among the parishes where structural damage was extreme and widespread. The Jamaica Information Service reported in 2026 that most Montego Bay businesses were back in operation. According to the Jamaica Tourist Board’s hotel status page, as of October 2026 many Montego Bay hotels are open, while Sandals Montego Bay and Sandals Royal Caribbean are due to reopen on 18 December 2026 and several large resorts in the Rose Hall area, including Hyatt, Secrets, Breathless and Dreams properties, in 2027; dates may change, so check before booking. As of early October 2026, the 2026 season had produced eight tropical storms and no hurricanes, according to the NHC.

How long to stay: 3, 4 and 5 days

3 days: day one, Doctor’s Cave Beach and the Hip Strip; day two, Rose Hall Great House and a snorkel trip in the marine park; day three, Martha Brae rafting and the Luminous Lagoon at night.

4 days: add a day trip to Negril for Seven Mile Beach and sunset at the West End. 5 days: add Ocho Rios and Dunn’s River Falls.

Where to stay in Montego Bay and the hotel tax

  • Hip Strip: small hotels and guesthouses, walkable to the beach and bars.
  • Rose Hall and Ironshore: large all-inclusive resorts, golf and villas; some reopening late 2026–2027 after Melissa.
  • West of the bay: luxury estates and villas, quiet and secluded.

According to Tax Administration Jamaica, hotel rooms carry 10% General Consumption Tax (the tourism rate, instead of the standard 16.5%) plus the Guest Accommodation Room Tax of US$1, US$2 or US$4 per occupied room per night, depending on whether the property has up to 51, 51–100 or 101 or more rooms, as of October 2026. Many prices are quoted before tax and service charge, so check the total.

  • Taxis: use licensed tourist taxis or your hotel’s transport, and agree the price first.
  • Currency: ask whether prices are in US or Jamaican dollars; pay local businesses in J$.
  • Vendors: a friendly but firm “no, thank you” works on the Hip Strip.
  • After dark: stay on the Hip Strip or at your resort and take a taxi rather than walking far.
  • Emergencies: call 119 for police and 110 for fire and ambulance.
