Short answer: with 7 days, spend four nights in Havana for Old Havana, the Malecón, Vedado and live music, with two nights in between in the tobacco valley of Viñales. With 10 days, add Cienfuegos on the way to Trinidad, Cuba’s best-preserved colonial town, and finish with two nights in Havana or on the beach at Varadero. With 14 days, slow the same route down and continue from Trinidad through Santa Clara to three beach days at Varadero. November to April, the drier and less humid season, is the best time for all three.
This guide turns the sample trips on our Cuba travel guide into day-by-day plans, with road times, the best area to sleep and what to book ahead. Mid-December to April is peak season, March and April are the driest months, and May to October is hot and rainy, with September and October the peak of hurricane season. Our best time to visit Cuba guide goes month by month, and our top 10 places to visit in Cuba explains each stop. For a plan built around your dates and interests, use our AI trip planner. Travel times between the main stops
These are the legs used in the plans below. Cuba has no reliable passenger railway for visitors, so you travel by Viazul coach, shared taxi (colectivo) or private driver. Road times are approximate; leave spare time between stops, and plan slower travel than the map suggests.

|---|---|---|---|
| Havana airport – Old Havana or Vedado | Taxi or transfer (15 km / 9 miles) | about 25–40 min (approximate) | Road distance |
| Havana – Viñales | Viazul coach, colectivo or private driver (180 km / 110 miles) | about 2 h 30–3 h (approximate) | Road distance |
| Havana – Las Terrazas | Private driver or tour (75 km / 47 miles) | about 1 h 30 (approximate) | Road distance |

| Havana – Varadero | Coach or driver along the Vía Blanca (140 km / 87 miles) | about 2–2 h 30 (approximate) | Road distance |
| Varadero – Varadero airport (VRA) | Taxi or transfer (20–25 km) | about 25–35 min (approximate) | Road distance |

Viazul, the state long-distance coach company, links Havana with Viñales, Varadero, Cienfuegos, Trinidad and other cities; book online in advance, as seats sell out and departures can change. Shared taxis and private drivers pick up from your casa particular, often more flexibly; agree the price and pickup point the day before.
7 days: Havana and Viñales
A week split between the capital and the countryside. Ending with a night in Havana keeps the airport close for your flight home.
- Day 1, Havana: Arrive at José Martí and taxi into town (about 25–40 minutes). Walk the Malecón, the 8 km (5-mile) seafront boulevard, at sunset. Sleep: Old Havana or Vedado (3 nights).
- Day 2, Old Havana: The four restored colonial squares, Plaza de Armas, Plaza de la Catedral, Plaza Vieja and Plaza de San Francisco, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982, then Obispo street and the Museo de Bellas Artes. Live son and salsa in the evening.

- Day 7, home: Fusterlandia’s mosaics in Jaimanitas or Hemingway’s Finca Vigía in the morning, then the airport.
Swap it: prefer the beach to the countryside? Replace Viñales with two nights at Varadero, about 2 to 2.5 hours east. More on each stop is in our Havana and Viñales guides.
10 days: Havana, Viñales, Cienfuegos and Trinidad
The classic first-timer’s loop: the capital, the west and the colonial center. Cienfuegos breaks the five-hour road trip from Havana to Trinidad.

- Day 6, to Trinidad: The UNESCO-listed neoclassical center of Cienfuegos and the Tomás Terry Theater in the morning, then about 1.5 hours to Trinidad, with a stop at El Nicho waterfalls in the Escambray if you have a driver. Music on the steps by the Plaza Mayor at night. Sleep: a casa particular in Trinidad’s historic center (2 nights).
- Day 7, Trinidad: The Plaza Mayor, the museums and a tower climb in the morning, then the Valle de los Ingenios and the 45 m (148 ft) Manaca Iznaga tower, or the beach at Playa Ancón, about 12 km (7.5 miles) away.
- Day 8, to Havana or Varadero: About 5 hours to Havana or about 4.5 hours to Varadero. Sleep: Havana or Varadero (2 nights).
- Day 9, a free day: In Havana, Fusterlandia, Hemingway’s Finca Vigía or Santa María del Mar beach; in Varadero, a beach day or a catamaran trip to Cayo Blanco.
- Day 10, home: Fly from Havana, or from Varadero if your airline flies there.
Swap it: more nature, fewer cities? Replace the night in Cienfuegos with a third night in Trinidad and a hike to the waterfalls of Topes de Collantes, about 20 km (12 miles) into the Escambray Mountains. Details are in our Trinidad guide.
14 days: west to center, ending on the beach
Two weeks lets you travel at the pace Cuba suits best, with a beach at the end. This route runs west first, then east across the center, finishing at Varadero, a little over two hours from Havana’s airport.
- Days 1–3, Havana: Old Havana’s squares and museums, the Malecón, Vedado, the Plaza de la Revolución, El Morro and La Cabaña, Centro Habana’s Callejón de Hamel murals, and live music every night. Sleep: Old Havana or Vedado (3 nights).
- Days 4–5, Viñales: Farms, mogotes and caves, including the Cueva de Santo Tomás, one of the largest cave systems in Latin America; or a beach day at Cayo Jutías, reached by a causeway. Sleep: Viñales (2 nights).
- Day 6, to Cienfuegos: A long road day east by private driver or colectivo, ideally broken at Las Terrazas. Sleep: Cienfuegos (1 night).
- Days 7–9, Trinidad: The old town and its music, the Valle de los Ingenios, Playa Ancón, and the waterfalls of Topes de Collantes. Snorkel and dive trips leave from the marina near Playa Ancón. Sleep: Trinidad’s historic center or La Boca by the sea (3 nights).
- Day 10, to Santa Clara: About 2.5 hours north, with a stop in Sancti Spíritus and its old stone bridge. The Che Guevara memorial and mausoleum in the afternoon. Sleep: Santa Clara (1 night).
- Day 11, to Varadero: North-west to the Hicacos Peninsula and its 20 km (12-mile) beach. Sleep: Varadero (3 nights).
- Days 12–13, Varadero: Beach days, a catamaran trip to Cayo Blanco, the Varahicacos reserve and the Xanadu Mansion at sunset, or a day trip to Matanzas or the Bay of Pigs for reef snorkeling at Caleta Buena and Punta Perdiz.
- Day 14, home: Fly from Varadero, or about 2 to 2.5 hours back to Havana’s airport.
Going further east: with more time, Camagüey’s winding, UNESCO-listed colonial center, Santiago de Cuba, the home of son, and Baracoa among rainforest and rivers lie beyond Santa Clara. Parts of the east are still recovering from Hurricane Melissa (October 2025), so add them only when transport and accommodation are confirmed. For beaches with fewer people, the long causeway-linked cays of Cayo Santa María and the Jardines del Rey are alternatives to Varadero. See our Varadero guide.
Where to sleep, by stop
| Stop | Best area for a short stay | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Havana | Old Havana, or Vedado | Restored colonial hotels and casas in the middle of everything; or calmer, leafy streets with the best paladares and nightlife, a short taxi ride away |
| Viñales | A casa particular in town, or a farm stay on the edge of town | Everything on foot, rocking chairs facing the mogotes and home-cooked dinners |
| Cienfuegos | The historic center, or Punta Gorda on the bay | Walk to the squares; sunset views at Punta Gorda |
| Trinidad | The historic center, or La Boca by the sea | Casas in colonial houses with rooftop terraces; or a quieter base between town and Playa Ancón |
| Santa Clara | Near Parque Vidal | The center for an overnight stop |
| Varadero | Varadero town (the western end), or the resort strip further east | Casas, paladares and local life on foot; or all-inclusive hotels on the beach |
Casas particulares, private guesthouses in family homes, quote one nightly price, and most offer breakfast and dinner for a little more; they are the best way to stay in Viñales and Trinidad. Hotel room rates are normally quoted with taxes included. Ask before booking whether the casa or hotel has backup power and water tanks.
Alternatives by interest
Beach lovers
Spend three nights in Havana, then a week at Varadero, with a night or two in Trinidad for Playa Ancón if you want variety. March to May is best for calm, sunny beach days, after the winter cold fronts that bring waves to the north coast. From Viñales, Cayo Jutías and Cayo Levisa make easy beach day trips. See our beaches guide.
Hikers and nature lovers
Give Viñales three or four nights for guided hikes between the mogotes and the Cueva de Santo Tomás, add Las Terrazas in the Sierra del Rosario, and spend extra time in Trinidad for the waterfalls of Topes de Collantes. November to April brings firm, dry trails. See our hiking guide.
Music and culture lovers
Stay longer in Havana and Trinidad, where live son, salsa, rumba and jazz play every night: the Casa de la Música and the Casa de la Trova in Trinidad, jazz clubs in Vedado, and Afro-Cuban rumba at the Callejón de Hamel. Plan around the Havana Jazz Festival in January or the New Latin American Film Festival in December.
Snorkelers and divers
Combine Trinidad’s dive trips from the marina near Playa Ancón with the reefs of the Bay of Pigs at Caleta Buena and Punta Perdiz, about two hours south of Varadero, and catamaran trips to Cayo Blanco. The water is warmest from June to October, but calmest and clearest in spring. See our snorkeling and diving guides.
Tips for planning your route
- Do the two online steps. The electronic tourist visa on evisacuba.cu at least 72 hours ahead, and the free D’Viajeros form within seven days of travel. Ignore look-alike sites that charge more.
- Bring cash for the whole trip. Bring US dollars or euros in clean, undamaged notes, including small bills; card machines and ATMs are unreliable. Tipping is customary: about 10% in restaurants, if service isn’t already added.
- Book transport a day or more ahead. Viazul seats and good private drivers fill up; confirm pickup times the day before.
- Leave spare time. Plan fewer stops than you think, keep long road days for mornings, and keep your last night near your departure airport.
- Confirm flights and hotels shortly before you go. Schedules and resort openings change, especially at Varadero.
- Match the season to the plan. December to February is coolest for walking Havana and Trinidad, January to March is the tobacco harvest in Viñales, and March to May is best for beaches.
Cuba itinerary FAQ
Is 7 days enough for Cuba?
Yes for Havana and Viñales, or Havana and Varadero. To add Trinidad without rushing, plan 10 days, as it is about five hours by road from Havana.
How many days do I need in Havana?
Three days covers Old Havana, the Malecón, Vedado and the fortresses. Four or five lets you add Hemingway’s house, Fusterlandia, the Playas del Este or a day trip to Las Terrazas.
Can I visit Viñales as a day trip from Havana?
You can, but at about 2.5 to 3 hours each way it is rushed. Stay at least one night, ideally two, in a casa particular.
How do I get around Cuba without a car?
By Viazul coach between the main tourist towns, booked in advance, or by shared taxi or private driver, which pick up at your casa. Many visitors hire a driver for the long legs.
Trinidad or Cienfuegos?
Trinidad, if you only have time for one: it is the best-preserved colonial town, with music every night and a beach nearby. Cienfuegos, 1.5 hours away, makes an easy overnight stop or day trip on the way.
Should I end my trip in Havana or Varadero?
Varadero if you want beach days at the end; Havana if you want more city time or your flight leaves from José Martí. The two are about 2 to 2.5 hours apart.
What is the best month for a Cuba trip?
November to April, the drier season; March and April are the driest. Mid-December to April is also peak season, so book earlier for Christmas, New Year and Easter.
