Nha Trang Travel Guide

Skyline view of a city framed by lush mountains under a blue sky.

Nha Trang is Vietnam’s classic seaside city: a long, curving beach backed by palm-lined Tran Phu Avenue and a skyline of hotel towers, set on a bay scattered with islands, with mountains rising behind. It is a place for swimming, snorkeling and diving in the coral reefs of the Hon Mun marine protected area, island-hopping by boat, soaking in mineral mud baths, eating grilled seafood and fish-cake noodles, and visiting the thousand-year-old Cham towers of Po Nagar. North and south of the city are quieter bays and beaches, from Doc Let and Ninh Van to Bai Dai near Cam Ranh. Nha Trang is the main city of Khanh Hoa, which in July 2025 merged with the neighboring province of Ninh Thuan, so the province now stretches south to the vineyards, dunes and Cham temples around Phan Rang. Its weather differs from much of the country: the long dry season runs from January to August, and the rains come from September to December, with October and November the wettest months.

Nha Trang’s areas and where to stay

Nha Trang stretches about 6 km (4 miles) along the bay, from the Cai River in the north to the port at Cau Da in the south. Since the 2025 reform, the city has been divided into wards, but the main areas keep their familiar names.

The beachfront (Tran Phu Avenue)

Tran Phu Avenue follows the main beach, with a broad promenade, parks and beach clubs on the sea side and a wall of hotels on the other. Most visitors stay here or one or two blocks back, within walking distance of the sand, restaurants, bars and night market.

The “tourist quarter”

The blocks between Tran Phu, Biet Thu, Hung Vuong and Nguyen Thien Thuat streets are packed with mid-range hotels, travel agents, dive shops, international restaurants and bars, a few minutes from the beach.

The north: Po Nagar and Hon Chong

Across the Xom Bong bridge, the northern part of the city has the Po Nagar towers, the Hon Chong headland and quieter beaches with smaller hotels and local seafood restaurants.

Bai Dai and the bays beyond the city

South of the city, near Cam Ranh airport, Bai Dai (Long Beach) has a strip of big resorts on a wide, quiet beach. North of the city, the bays of Ninh Van and Doc Let have secluded luxury resorts and a white-sand beach, 45 to 90 minutes away.

Top things to see in Nha Trang

Nha Trang Beach

The main beach is free, with sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, water sports at the beach clubs and a lively promenade at dawn and dusk, when locals swim and exercise. In the dry season, the sea is usually calm and good for swimming; afternoon winds can make it choppy. Swim near the lifeguard stations. See our beaches guide.

Po Nagar Cham Towers

On a hill at the mouth of the Cai River, the red-brick towers of Po Nagar were built by the Cham people between about the 7th and 12th centuries to honor the goddess Yan Po Nagar, the mother of the country. The main tower still holds her statue and is an active place of worship, used by both Cham and Vietnamese; dress modestly. Cham dance performances are held at the site, and a festival takes place in the third lunar month.

Long Son Pagoda

The Long Son Pagoda, at the foot of Trai Thuy hill, has a large white seated Buddha on the hilltop, reached by a long stairway, with views over the city. Beware of people who attach themselves as unofficial “guides” and then ask for money.

The islands and Hon Mun

Nha Trang Bay has more than a dozen islands. Boat trips leave daily from Cau Da port to Hon Mun, a marine protected area with some of Vietnam’s best-known coral reefs, and to Hon Mot, Hon Tam and other islands for snorkeling, beaches and lunch. The cheapest “party boat” trips are crowded and noisy; small-group snorkeling and diving trips are better for the reefs. See our snorkeling, diving and boat trips guides.

Mud baths and hot springs

Several resorts on the edge of the city, such as Thap Ba and I-Resort, offer mineral mud baths and hot-spring pools, a popular half-day activity, especially for families.

More classic sights

  • Nha Trang Cathedral: a stone Gothic Revival church from the 1930s on a small hill in the center.
  • Alexandre Yersin Museum: the life and laboratory of the Swiss-French scientist who discovered the plague bacillus and lived in Nha Trang.
  • National Oceanographic Museum: aquariums and marine specimens at the Institute of Oceanography by Cau Da port.
  • Hon Chong: a headland of granite boulders north of the city, with sea views.
  • VinWonders Nha Trang: an amusement and water park on Hon Tre island, reached by boat.

Other things to do in Nha Trang

Food and drink

Nha Trang’s best-known dish is bun cha ca, rice noodles with fish cakes and jellyfish in a light broth; try also nem nuong Ninh Hoa, grilled pork sausages rolled in rice paper with herbs and dipped in a thick sauce; banh can, small rice-flour pancakes cooked in clay molds; and bun sua, a jellyfish noodle soup. The city’s seafood is excellent, from grilled squid and scallops with spring onions to lobster from the farms around Cam Ranh; check the price by weight before ordering. Khanh Hoa is also famous for swiftlet nests (yen sao), sold in shops around town.

Diving and snorkeling

Several established dive centers run trips to the Hon Mun reefs and other sites, with beginner courses, fun dives and snorkeling trips for non-divers. The reefs have hard and soft corals, reef fish, nudibranchs and the occasional turtle; they have suffered from overfishing and boat traffic, so choose operators that moor carefully and brief divers on reef etiquette. Visibility is best from February to September; from October to December, the water is often murky and trips may be canceled.

Day spas and wellness

Besides the mud baths, Nha Trang has many inexpensive spas and massage shops, as well as resort spas. Choose places with clear price lists.

Nightlife

Bars in the tourist quarter and beach clubs on Tran Phu stay open late, and the night market sells street food and souvenirs.

With children

Nha Trang is one of Vietnam’s most family-friendly destinations. The main beach shelves gently in the dry season, the promenade has playgrounds and space for scooters and bicycles, and many beachfront hotels have pools and kids’ clubs. VinWonders on Hon Tre island combines a water park, rides and an aquarium, and the mud baths, with warm mineral pools and slides at some centers, are popular with children. Choose island trips with shade and life jackets in children’s sizes, and avoid the noisy party boats.

Cham heritage in Khanh Hoa

The Cham, a people of Austronesian origin whose Hindu kingdom of Champa ruled the central coast for more than a thousand years, still live in the former Ninh Thuan province, south of Nha Trang. Besides Po Nagar, their brick temples survive at Po Klong Garai near Phan Rang, where the Kate festival is held each autumn, and Cham villages there continue traditional pottery and brocade weaving. Combining Po Nagar with a day in Phan Rang gives a fuller picture of a culture that is often overlooked.

Day trips from Nha Trang

  • Ninh Van Bay and Doc Let: a secluded bay with luxury resorts reached by boat, and a white-sand beach about 1 hour north.
  • Ba Ho waterfalls: a series of pools and cascades in the hills about 25 km (16 miles) north, reached by scrambling over boulders.
  • Vinh Hy Bay and Nui Chua National Park: a beautiful bay and dry coastal national park in the former Ninh Thuan province, about 2 hours south.
  • Phan Rang: the Cham towers of Po Klong Garai, vineyards and sand dunes, about 1.5 to 2 hours south.
  • Dalat: the cool highland city, about 3.5 hours by road over the mountains; better as an overnight trip.

Nearby destinations

Getting there and getting around

By air

Cam Ranh International Airport (CXR) is about 35 km (22 miles) south of the city center, 40 to 50 minutes by road along the coast. It has frequent domestic flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and international flights from South Korea, China, Russia, Kazakhstan and other Asian countries. Grab, taxis and an airport bus run to the city.

By train and bus

Nha Trang Station, in the center, is on the Reunification Express railway between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, with several trains a day in each direction; the overnight trains to and from Ho Chi Minh City are popular. Book on Vietnam Railways’ website, dsvn.vn. Sleeper buses and limousine vans run to Ho Chi Minh City, Dalat, Hoi An and Da Nang.

Around the city

Walk along the beach, and use Grab or Xanh SM for longer trips; metered taxis are also reliable. Boats to the islands leave from Cau Da port in the south of the city; most tours include hotel pickup. Motorbike rental is popular, but you need a license valid in Vietnam (see Safety below).

Practical tips for Nha Trang

  • Snorkel in the dry season: February to May has the best visibility and calmest water.
  • Choose small-group boat trips: party boats are fun, but crowded and rough on the reefs.
  • Check seafood prices: agree on the price per kilo before it’s cooked.
  • Respect the reef: don’t stand on or touch coral, and use reef-safe sunscreen.
  • Watch the weather: from October to December, boat trips can be canceled at short notice.

Safety

Nha Trang is relaxed and generally safe, but the usual precautions apply. Phone and bag snatching from passing motorbikes happens occasionally on the beachfront and in the tourist quarter at night. At the beach, rip currents and strong waves can occur, especially in the rainy season; swim near lifeguards and stay out of the water when red flags fly. On island trips, choose licensed operators, make sure life jackets are available and wear one on speedboats and while snorkeling if you are not a strong swimmer. From September to December, tropical storms can bring very heavy rain, strong winds and flooding to the south-central coast; follow warnings from the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting and local authorities. Helmets are compulsory on motorbikes, and you need a license valid in Vietnam to ride, such as an international driving permit issued under the 1968 Convention with your home license. Drink sealed, branded spirits only, as methanol-contaminated alcohol has caused poisonings in Vietnam. In an emergency, call 113 for police, 114 for fire and 115 for an ambulance.

What to pack for Nha Trang

Swimwear, a rash guard, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses; water shoes for rocky beaches and island landings; light clothes; a rain jacket from September to December; and something covering shoulders and knees for Po Nagar and the pagodas. Vietnam uses 220 V, with sockets for flat (type A) and round (type C) two-pin plugs. See our water shoes, wetsuits and travel adapters guides.
