Sanya, on the southern tip of Hainan Island, is China’s tropical beach resort: a string of palm-fringed bays on the South China Sea, warm enough to swim in all winter, at the same latitude as Hawaii’s Big Island. Each bay has its own character. Sanya Bay is the long city beach where locals walk at sunset; Dadonghai is the lively bay closest to town, with seafood restaurants and bars; and Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay are lined with large international resorts on soft white sand. Between swims you can climb to the Buddhist Nanshan temples, where a 108 m (354 ft) statue of Guanyin stands in the sea, wander the rocks of Tianya Haijiao, the “edge of the sky and end of the sea,” snorkel and dive off Wuzhizhou Island, walk the rainforest trails above Yalong Bay and learn about the Li and Miao peoples of Hainan’s hills. Sanya is also known for duty-free shopping: under Hainan’s offshore duty-free policy, travelers leaving the island for the rest of China can buy up to 100,000 yuan of goods a year free of import duties. Hainan has its own 30-day visa-free entry for 61 countries, and a high-speed railway circles the island. The city has about 1 million people. The best months are November to April, when it is warm, sunny and dry.

Sanya’s bays and where to stay
Sanya stretches about 50 km (31 miles) along the coast. Choose your bay first: it shapes your whole stay.
Sanya Bay and the city center
The long, straight Sanya Bay runs west of the city, with a beachfront promenade lined with coconut palms, the artificial Phoenix Island and its cruise terminal, and views of sunset over the sea. Behind it, the city center along the Sanya River has the First Market for seafood, local restaurants and the most affordable hotels. It is the best choice for city life and value, though the water is less clear than in the eastern bays.
Dadonghai
Dadonghai, a sheltered bay just southeast of the center over Luhuitou hill, is the most convenient beach base: mid-range hotels, restaurants, bars and shops are all within walking distance of the sand, and taxis to the center take 10–15 minutes. It is busy and compact, popular with Russian and other international visitors, and the water is good for swimming.
Yalong Bay
About 25 km (16 miles) east of the center, Yalong Bay is the classic resort bay, with a 7 km (4 mile) crescent of fine white sand, clear water and a line of large international hotels, each with its own beach section and pools. The Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park rises behind it. It is quieter and pricier, with fewer independent restaurants.
Haitang Bay
Haitang Bay, the most northerly of Sanya’s bays, has the newest and most luxurious resorts along a long, open beach, and the giant Sanya International Duty-Free Shopping Park. The sea here can be rougher, with stronger currents, so swim where lifeguards are posted.
Sanya Bay west: Nanshan and Yazhou Bay
West of the city, toward the Nanshan temples, are quieter resorts and the new Yazhou Bay district, good for a peaceful stay but far from nightlife.
Where to stay in Sanya
- Sanya Bay and the center: best value, city life, sunsets and seafood markets.
- Dadonghai: walkable beach base with restaurants and nightlife.
- Yalong Bay: classic resorts on the clearest water.
- Haitang Bay: newest luxury resorts and the duty-free mall.
- West Sanya and Yazhou Bay: quiet resorts near Nanshan.
Prices peak from Chinese New Year through February, during Golden Week in early October and in the July–August school holidays; book well ahead for these dates.
Top things to see in Sanya
The beaches
Sanya’s beaches are public, and hotel beachfronts are generally open for walking. Yalong Bay has the clearest water and the best swimming; Dadonghai is sheltered and convenient; Sanya Bay is best for long walks and sunsets. Water sports, from banana boats and jet skis to parasailing, operate on the main beaches; agree prices first. Swim only where there are lifeguards and flags, and follow the flag system: Haitang Bay and parts of Sanya Bay can have strong currents.
Nanshan Cultural Tourism Zone
About 40 km (25 miles) west of the center, Nanshan is a vast Buddhist park of temples, gardens and sea views. Its landmark is the Guanyin of the South Sea, a white statue 108 m (354 ft) high standing on an artificial island and facing three ways, one of the tallest statues in the world. Allow half a day; electric carts link the sights.
Tianya Haijiao
The “Edge of the Sky and End of the Sea,” on the coast about 25 km (16 miles) west of the center, is a beach of huge granite boulders carved with poetic inscriptions, long a symbol of the far edge of the empire, where officials were once sent into exile. Today it is a popular, crowded park; go early or late in the day.
Luhuitou Park
On the hill between Sanya Bay and Dadonghai, Luhuitou, “the deer turns its head,” has a statue of a deer and a legend of love, and the best panoramic view over the city, the bays and the islands, especially at sunset.
Wuzhizhou Island
Off Haitang Bay, Wuzhizhou Island is Sanya’s best spot for snorkeling and diving, with clear water, coral and tropical fish, plus beaches, sea walks and glass-bottom boats. Boats run from a pier on the mainland; the ticket includes the boat, with activities extra. Visitor numbers are capped, so book ahead in holidays.
Yalong Bay Tropical Paradise Forest Park
In the hills behind Yalong Bay, this rainforest park has walkways, a long suspension bridge high over a valley and viewpoints over the bay; shuttle buses climb from the entrance.
More classic sights
- Betel Nut Valley (Binglanggu): a cultural park about an hour north of Sanya showing the traditions of the Li and Miao peoples: weaving, tattoos, music and houses.
- Yanoda Rainforest: a rainforest park with trails, waterfalls, zip lines and canopy walks, about 40 minutes north of the city.
- Sanya Bay Coconut Dream Corridor: the long beachfront promenade, best at sunset.
- Phoenix Island: the artificial island off Sanya Bay, with a cruise terminal and lit towers at night.
- Xidao (West Island): a fishing island with beaches and water sports off western Sanya Bay.
Other things to do in Sanya
Duty-free shopping
Hainan’s offshore duty-free policy lets travelers who are leaving Hainan Island for another part of China, by plane, train or ship, buy goods free of import duty, VAT and consumption tax. Since 1 November 2025, the annual quota is 100,000 yuan per person, with no limit on the number of purchases; buyers must be at least 18; and the list covers 47 categories, from cosmetics, perfume, watches, jewelry and handbags to electronics, small appliances, mini-drones, portable musical instruments and pet supplies. You shop with your passport and your onward ticket at an approved shop or online platform, and the goods are delivered for you to collect at the departure airport, railway station or port; they are for personal use, not resale. Sanya’s approved shops include the huge Sanya International Duty-Free Shopping Park at Haitang Bay, the Haitang Bay duty-free shop and the shop at Sanya Phoenix airport. If you fly directly abroad from Hainan, this island scheme does not apply; normal departure duty-free rules do.
Diving, snorkeling and surfing
Snorkel and dive at Wuzhizhou Island, Xidao and in Yalong Bay with licensed centers; visibility is best in the dry season. Hainan is China’s surfing hub: Houhai village, about 30 km (19 miles) northeast of the center, has beginner waves, surf schools and board rental, best from November to March. See our beaches, snorkeling, diving and surfing guides.
Food and drink
Hainan cooking is fresh and light. Try the island’s “four famous dishes”: Wenchang chicken, poached and served with ginger and lime dips (the origin of Hainanese chicken rice); Jiaji duck; Dongshan goat; and Hele crab. Seafood is the highlight: at the First Market in the center, you can buy fish, prawns, lobster and shellfish by weight at the stalls and have them cooked at the restaurants upstairs for a fee per dish. Cool down with qingbuliang, a coconut-milk dessert with beans, fruit and jelly; fresh coconuts; and tropical fruit such as mango, jackfruit, pineapple and lychee. Hainan rice noodles (Hainan fen), with peanuts, beef and pickles, make a classic breakfast.
Day trips from Sanya
- Houhai and Wuzhizhou: surf lessons in the morning, island snorkeling in the afternoon.
- Lingshui and Fenjiezhou Island: clear water and a small island with snorkeling and diving, about an hour northeast; Lingshui also has the Li minority Nanwan Monkey Island.
- Wanning and Riyue Bay: Hainan’s main surfing beach and the town of Xinglong, known for Southeast Asian coffee and tropical gardens, about 1.5 hours by train or road.
- Wuzhishan: the island’s highest mountain (about 1,867 m/6,125 ft), with forests and Li villages in the cooler interior, about 2 hours north.
- Bo’ao: a riverside town and conference resort on the east coast, about 1.5 hours by high-speed train.

Getting there and getting around
By air
Sanya Phoenix International Airport (SYX), about 15 km (9 miles) northwest of the center, has flights from most major Chinese cities and international routes in Asia and to Russia. It is a designated port for both Hainan’s 30-day visa-free entry, which covers 61 countries including the United States, for stays within Hainan only, and the 240-hour visa-free transit, with all of Hainan as the permitted area. Taxis and DiDi reach Dadonghai and Sanya Bay in about 20–30 minutes and Yalong Bay in about 40 minutes; airport buses run to the main bays.
By train
The Hainan round-island high-speed railway links Sanya with Haikou in about 1.5–2 hours on the east line, stopping at Bo’ao, Wanning and Lingshui; a western line runs via Danzhou. Sanya Station is north of the center; Yalong Bay and Phoenix Airport stations are on the line. From the mainland, overnight trains from Guangzhou and other cities cross the Qiongzhou Strait on a train ferry. Book on the 12306 website or app with your passport.
By sea
Cruise ships call at Phoenix Island. Car and passenger ferries cross the Qiongzhou Strait between Haikou and Zhanjiang in Guangdong.
Around town
The bays are spread out: use taxis and DiDi, or the city buses that run along the coast road between the center, Dadonghai and Yalong Bay. Many resorts have shuttles. Electric scooters are common; ride with care.
When to go and how long to stay
Sanya has a tropical monsoon climate: warm all year, with a dry season and a wet season. From November to April, days are sunny and warm, with highs around 22–27 °C (72–80 °F) and little rain: the peak season, busiest around Chinese New Year. May and June grow hot and humid. From July to October, the wet season brings heavy showers and thunderstorms, and Hainan is exposed to typhoons, most often from July to October; October is, on average, the wettest month. The sea is warm enough to swim year-round. The table uses the 1991–2020 climate normals for the Sanya station of the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), as submitted to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO): average daily highs and lows, total precipitation, and days with at least 1 mm of rain. The station sits on a hill about 420 m (1,380 ft) above sea level, so the beaches are typically a degree or two warmer.

Practical tips for Sanya
- Book peak season early: Chinese New Year, February and Golden Week fill the resorts and push up prices.
- Bring your passport: you need it for hotels, trains, island boats and duty-free purchases.
- Agree seafood prices: check the price per jin (500 g) and the weight before your fish is cooked.
- Plan duty-free pickup: buy at least a few hours before departure and collect at the airport, station or port.
- Watch the weather: from July to October, check typhoon warnings before booking boat trips.
- Use sun protection: the tropical sun is strong all year, even when cloudy.
Safety
Sanya is a safe, relaxed resort city. The main risks are natural. Typhoons can strike Hainan from about May to November, most often from July to October, bringing violent winds, heavy rain, flooding and storm surge; when warnings are raised, boat trips, flights and trains are suspended and beaches close, so follow the instructions of your hotel and local authorities. On the beaches, rip currents occur, especially at Haitang Bay and along open stretches: swim between the flags where lifeguards are on duty, and stay out of the water when red flags fly. Jellyfish appear at times. The sun and heat are intense; drink plenty of water. Agree prices for water sports, taxis without meters and seafood in advance, and use licensed operators with life jackets for boat and dive trips. Carry your passport for hotels and checks. In an emergency, call 110 for police, 120 for an ambulance and 119 for fire.
What to pack for Sanya
Light, breathable clothes, swimwear, a sun hat, sunglasses and reef-friendly sunscreen; water shoes for rocky beaches and boat landings; a light rain jacket for the wet season; a cover-up for the Nanshan temples; and a light sweater for air-conditioning and the occasional cool winter evening. China uses 220 V, with flat two-pin, round two-pin and angled three-pin sockets. See our water shoes, rain jackets and travel adapters guides.
