Tianjin Travel Guide

Stunning aerial view of Tianjin cityscape, featuring the Haihe River and modern architecture.

Tianjin, one of China’s four municipalities, lies on the Hai River about 120 km (75 miles) southeast of Beijing, where the river runs out to the Bohai Sea. For centuries it was the port of the capital, and after 1860 nine foreign powers held concessions here, leaving one of the richest collections of European-style architecture in Asia. Today Tianjin is a big, relaxed city of about 14 million, half an hour from Beijing by the Beijing–Tianjin intercity train, and an easy day trip or a rewarding stop of its own. Walk the leafy villa streets of the Five Great Avenues, the piazzas of the Italian Style Town and the riverside banks of Jiefang North Road; ride the Tianjin Eye, a giant Ferris wheel built on a bridge over the river; browse the painted shops of Ancient Culture Street; and see the Porcelain House, a mansion covered in millions of shards of china. Tianjin is also proud of its comedy: the city is the home of crosstalk (xiangsheng), performed nightly in teahouses, and of street snacks such as jianbing guozi and Goubuli buns. On the coast, the Binhai district has the striking Binhai Library and the cruise port that serves Beijing. Spring and autumn are the best seasons.

Tianjin’s areas and where to stay

The center follows the curves of the Hai River, with Tianjin Station on the north bank and the old concession districts and downtown on the south bank. Binhai, the port and new business district, lies about 45 km (28 miles) east on the coast.

Heping and the Five Great Avenues

Heping, the downtown district, contains the former British and French concessions. The Five Great Avenues (Wudadao) area is a quiet grid of tree-lined streets with more than 2,000 villas and houses from the 1920s and 1930s, many of them once home to famous figures of the Republican era. Nearby Binjiang Road is the main shopping street. Heping has boutique hotels in historic buildings and modern international hotels.

Jiefang North Road and the riverside

Jiefang North Road, once the “Wall Street” of Tianjin, is lined with stately former banks of the concession era. The riverside promenades of the Hai River, with their bridges and lights, are a short walk away.

Hebei district and the Italian Style Town

On the north bank, across from Tianjin Station, the Italian Style Town is the restored former Italian concession, with piazzas, cafés and restaurants. Hotels near the station put you between the river, the Italian quarter and the Tianjin Eye.

Nankai and Ancient Culture Street

Nankai, in the northwest of the center, is the old walled Chinese city, with the Drum Tower, Ancient Culture Street and the campuses of Nankai and Tianjin universities.

Where to stay in Tianjin

  • Five Great Avenues and Heping: historic villas, walking streets and downtown shopping.
  • Tianjin Station and the Italian Style Town: convenient for the intercity train and the river.
  • Nankai: old-city atmosphere and local food.
  • Binhai: for cruises, the Binhai Library and the airport area.

Rooms fill on weekends in summer and during Chinese New Year, May Day and Golden Week, when many Beijing residents visit.

Top things to see in Tianjin

Five Great Avenues

The Five Great Avenues (Wudadao), named after five streets in the former British concession, is Tianjin’s most beautiful area to wander: red-brick and stone villas in English, French, Italian, Spanish and Art Deco styles, many marked with plaques about their history. Minyuan Square, built on the site of an old stadium, is the heart of the area. Rent a bike or join a horse-drawn carriage tour, or simply walk, with stops in cafés converted from old houses.

Italian Style Town

The Italian Style Town, around Marco Polo Square on the north bank, was Italy’s only concession in China. Its restored villas and squares now hold restaurants, bars and shops; it is lively at night and photogenic at any time.

Tianjin Eye

The Tianjin Eye, a Ferris wheel about 120 m (390 ft) tall built on top of the Yongle Bridge over the Hai River, is one of the city’s symbols. A full turn takes about 30 minutes; go at dusk for views over the river and the city lights.

Hai River and Jiefang North Road

The Hai River winds through the center under a series of decorated bridges, the most famous being the Jiefang Bridge, a steel bridge built in the 1920s near Tianjin Station. An evening river cruise passes illuminated bridges and buildings. Walk Jiefang North Road to see the grand bank buildings of the concession era. See our boat trips guide.

Ancient Culture Street

Ancient Culture Street, in the old Chinese city, is a pedestrian street of Qing-style shops selling paintings, kites, clay figurines, New Year prints and snacks, centered on the Tianhou Temple, a temple to the sea goddess Mazu that dates from the 14th century.

Porcelain House

The Porcelain House (China House), on Chifeng Road, is a French-style mansion covered inside and out with pieces of antique porcelain, stones and crystals, a quirky private museum.

More classic sights

  • Xikai Church: a large Romanesque Catholic cathedral of 1916 with green domes, on Binjiang Road.
  • Tianjin Museum: history and art of the city and the region, at the Cultural Center.
  • Wanghailou Church: a Gothic church of 1869 by the river near the Italian quarter.
  • Drum Tower: the restored center of the old walled city.
  • Tianjin Binhai Library: in Binhai, with a striking atrium of wave-shaped bookshelves around a spherical auditorium.
  • Former residence of Liang Qichao: the home and study of the reformist scholar, in the Italian concession.

Other things to do in Tianjin

Crosstalk and teahouses

Tianjin is the home of xiangsheng (crosstalk), a rapid-fire comic dialogue between two performers, and of other traditional storytelling arts. Teahouses around Ancient Culture Street and in the center hold performances nightly; even without Chinese, the timing and audience laughter make it a lively evening. See our city sightseeing guide.

Cycling the concessions

The flat streets of the Five Great Avenues and the riverside are ideal for cycling, with shared bikes everywhere and rental shops near Minyuan Square. See our cycling guide.

Food and drink

Tianjin is famous for snacks. Breakfast is jianbing guozi, a crepe of mung bean flour wrapped around a crisp fried dough sheet with egg, scallions and sauces. Goubuli baozi are pleated steamed pork buns with a 150-year history; Guifaxiang mahua are long, crunchy twisted dough sticks; and erduoyan fried cakes are sweet fried rice cakes filled with red bean paste. Seafood from the Bohai Sea, especially crabs and shrimp in autumn, is a local specialty. Bars in the Italian quarter and the Five Great Avenues serve local beer and cocktails.

Day trips from Tianjin

  • Huangyaguan Great Wall: a restored section of the Great Wall climbing steep ridges in Jizhou, about 2 hours north by road.
  • Panshan Mountain: a scenic mountain of temples, rocks and pines in Jizhou, about 2 hours north.
  • Beijing: the Forbidden City, the Great Wall and the hutongs, about 30 minutes by intercity train.
  • Binhai: the Binhai Library, the coast and the Dagu Forts, where Qing forces fought foreign fleets in the 19th century, about 1 hour by train or metro.
  • Yangliuqing: an old town west of the city, famous for colorful New Year woodblock prints, about 40 minutes by road.

Getting there and getting around

By the Beijing–Tianjin intercity train

The Beijing–Tianjin Intercity Railway, opened in 2008 as China’s first high-speed intercity line, links Beijing South with Tianjin Station in about 30 minutes, with trains running like a shuttle service, as often as every few minutes at peak times. Some trains stop at Wuqing and, since October 2024, at Yizhuang in southeast Beijing; extensions continue to Yujiapu in Binhai. Trains are busy with commuters on Friday and Monday, when the railway runs longer, double-length trains. Second-class tickets cost about 50–60 yuan. Book on the 12306 website or app with your passport; you can usually get a seat on the same day except on holidays. Other options are high-speed trains on the Beijing–Shanghai line from Beijing South to Tianjin South or Tianjin West, and, on weekends and holidays, a themed tourist train, the “Jinlü Shiguang,” between Beijing Station and Tianjin North, launched in January 2026.

By air

Tianjin Binhai International Airport (TSN), about 15 km (9 miles) east of the center, has flights across China and to cities in Asia. With Tianjin Port, it is a designated port for the 240-hour visa-free transit; the permitted area covers Tianjin, Beijing and Hebei, so you can arrive in Tianjin and visit Beijing. Metro line 2 links the airport with the center.

By sea

The Tianjin International Cruise Home Port, in Binhai about 60 km (37 miles) from the center, is the cruise port for Beijing, with ships to Japan and South Korea. Foreign tour groups of two or more people arriving by cruise ship and received by a Chinese travel agency can enter visa-free and stay up to 15 days in Beijing and the coastal provinces, leaving on the same ship. Ferries from Tianjin to South Korea have also operated; check current schedules. See our Japan and South Korea guides.

Around town

Tianjin’s metro connects Tianjin Station, Tianjin West, Tianjin South, the airport, the Cultural Center and the main districts. Buses, taxis, DiDi and shared bikes fill the gaps.

When to go and how long to stay

Tianjin has a monsoon-influenced continental climate, similar to Beijing’s but slightly moderated by the sea. Spring (April–May) is mild, dry and sometimes windy and dusty. Summer (June–August) is hot and humid, with highs around 31–32 °C (88–90 °F) and most of the year’s rain in July and August thunderstorms. Autumn (September–October) is clear and pleasant, the best season, with crabs in season. Winter (December–February) is cold and dry, with nights below freezing and rare snow. Tianjin has no station in the WMO 1991–2020 series, so the table uses the 1991–2020 climate normals for the Beijing station of the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), about 120 km (75 miles) to the northwest, as submitted to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO): average daily highs and lows, total precipitation, and days with at least 1 mm of rain. Tianjin’s own conditions are very similar.

Practical tips for Tianjin

  • Day trip from Beijing: take an early train out and an evening train back; check the last departure and buy your return ticket in advance on weekends.
  • Know your station: Tianjin Station (intercity trains), Tianjin West and Tianjin South (Beijing–Shanghai line) are far apart.
  • Walk the concessions: wear comfortable shoes; the Five Great Avenues are best explored slowly.
  • Ride the Eye at dusk: lines are longest on weekend evenings.
  • Book cruises with your passport details: the cruise terminal is far from the center; allow time.
  • Carry your passport: for trains, hotels, bookings and checks.

Safety

Tianjin is a safe and orderly city. The main challenges are weather and crowds. In July and August, highs above 30 °C (86 °F) and high humidity make heat exhaustion a risk, and heavy summer thunderstorms can cause local flooding; drink plenty of water and rest in the shade. Winters are cold and dry, with icy sidewalks on some days. Spring can bring strong winds, dust and, in some years, air pollution; check the air quality index and limit exertion on hazy days. Stay behind railings along the Hai River and the coast. The Italian Style Town, Ancient Culture Street and the Tianjin Eye are crowded on holidays; watch your belongings and use official taxis or DiDi. In an emergency, call 110 for police, 120 for an ambulance and 119 for fire.

What to pack for Tianjin

Comfortable walking shoes for the concession streets, light clothes and sun protection for summer, an umbrella for summer storms, a light jacket for spring winds and a warm coat for winter. China uses 220 V, with flat two-pin, round two-pin and angled three-pin sockets. See our rain jackets and travel adapters guides.
