The climate table shows average daily highs and lows and rain for each month at Sangster International Airport, Montego Bay, from the 1991–2020 climate normals that the Meteorological Service of Jamaica submitted to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Jamaica is hot all year at sea level: highs run from about 30 °C (86 °F) in winter to 33 °C (92 °F) in July and August, and nights rarely fall below 22 °C (72 °F). Rain has two peaks, a first in May and a bigger one from September to November, with October the wettest month at Montego Bay, about 159 mm (6.2 in). Kingston, in the rain shadow of the Blue Mountains, is drier, with about 885 mm (35 in) a year against Montego Bay’s 1,136 mm (45 in). The mountains are much cooler and wetter than the coast.

Jamaica month by month

January

Sunny and breezy, with highs near 30 °C (86 °F), lows of 22 °C (72 °F) and about 77 mm (3.0 in) of rain at Montego Bay, usually in short showers. It is peak season: the first week is part of the holiday rush, then prices ease a little. Reggae fans come for Rebel Salute, usually held in mid-January in St Ann. Cool nights in the Blue Mountains make it a fine month for hiking.

February

The driest month on the north coast, with about 42 mm (1.6 in) at Montego Bay, and the driest in Kingston too, with about 9 mm (0.3 in). It is high season. Bob Marley’s birthday on February 6 brings concerts and events in Kingston, and Ash Wednesday (February 10, 2027) is a public holiday. A top month for the beaches of Negril.

March

Warm, mostly dry and sunny, with highs near 31 °C (87 °F) and about 59 mm (2.3 in) of rain at Montego Bay. North American spring break makes it one of the busiest months. In 2027, Easter falls early: Good Friday is March 26 and Easter Monday March 29, both public holidays, and Carnival in Jamaica’s road marches in Kingston are usually held around Easter.

April

Still dry, with about 64 mm (2.5 in) of rain and highs near 31 °C (89 °F). High season ends around mid-April, so the second half of the month often brings the first lower rates while the weather is still excellent, one of the best-value windows of the year for Montego Bay and Ocho Rios.

May

The first rainy spell: Montego Bay’s average jumps to about 150 mm (5.9 in), mostly in afternoon showers and storms, and highs reach 32 °C (90 °F). Hotels are quieter and cheaper. Labour Day falls on May 23 (in 2027 a Sunday, so the holiday moves to Monday, May 24). Sargassum seaweed starts to drift into the Caribbean from spring.

June

Hot and humid, with highs of 33 °C (91 °F), but drier again, about 86 mm (3.4 in) at Montego Bay. The Atlantic hurricane season starts on June 1, though early-season storms are usually weaker. Crowds are low until school holidays begin late in the month.

July

One of the hottest months, with highs of 33 °C (92 °F), yet relatively dry at about 66 mm (2.6 in). Families and Jamaicans living abroad come home for summer, so prices rise slightly. Reggae Sumfest, the biggest reggae and dancehall festival, is usually held in Montego Bay in July; in 2026 it was scaled down to one night at Priory, St Ann, after Hurricane Melissa, and the 2027 dates and venue have not been announced.

August

Hot and humid, with about 94 mm (3.7 in) of rain and highs of 33 °C (92 °F). Emancipation Day (August 1, observed on Monday, August 2 in 2027) and Independence Day (August 6) bring national celebrations, including the Grand Gala in Kingston. Hurricane activity picks up from mid-August.

September

The heart of hurricane season and the start of the wettest stretch: about 135 mm (5.3 in) at Montego Bay and 185 mm (7.3 in) in Kingston, the capital’s wettest month. It is the quietest month for tourism, with low rates and some resorts closed for maintenance. Book flexible rates and travel insurance that covers storms.

October

The wettest month on the north coast, with about 159 mm (6.2 in) at Montego Bay, and still hurricane season: Hurricane Melissa struck the west of the island on October 28, 2025. Prices are low and resorts quiet. National Heroes’ Day, the third Monday of October (October 18, 2027), is a public holiday.

November

Rain eases to about 107 mm (4.2 in) at Montego Bay and highs drop to 31 °C (88 °F). The hurricane season ends on November 30. It is still low season, so late November often brings good deals before winter rates start, especially at the large resorts around Ocho Rios.

December

The dry season returns, with about 81 mm (3.2 in) of rain, highs of 30 °C (86 °F) and steady trade winds. High season starts around mid-December, and Christmas and New Year are the most expensive weeks of the year; Boxing Day (December 26) is a public holiday. Several resorts closed since Hurricane Melissa are scheduled to reopen in December 2026, according to the Jamaica Tourist Board, so check your hotel’s status before booking.

Best time to visit by region

Montego Bay

December to April is driest and breezy, with highs of about 30–32 °C (86–90 °F); October is the wettest month. Most businesses reopened within months of Hurricane Melissa, while several large Rose Hall resorts reopen from December 2026 into 2027. See our Montego Bay guide.

Negril

Come from December to April for calm water on Seven Mile Beach, clear snorkeling off the West End cliffs and the best sunsets. West-facing Negril usually catches less sargassum than the east and south coasts. Negril recovered fastest after the hurricane, and most hotels are open. See our Negril guide.

Ocho Rios

December to April is best for dry weather at Dunn’s River Falls and the river trips, but it is also cruise season, so pick days with fewer ships in port. After heavy rain, rivers and falls can run high and brown; wait for them to clear. See our Ocho Rios guide.

Kingston and the Blue Mountains

Kingston is hot all year, with highs of 31–33 °C (88–92 °F), and drier than the north coast; its wettest months are September and October. The Blue Mountains are cool and often misty, and the drier months from December to April give the best chance of clear views from Blue Mountain Peak. February brings the Bob Marley birthday events in Kingston.

Port Antonio and the south coast

Port Antonio, in the north-east, is one of the wettest parts of the island, so its rainforest rivers and waterfalls are at their best and most reliable in the drier winter months. The south coast was hit hardest by Hurricane Melissa and has recovered more slowly; check that hotels and attractions are open before you go.

Best time for beaches, diving, hiking and festivals in Jamaica

Beaches and swimming

December to April for calm, clear water and sunshine. The sea is warm all year, so summer is fine for beach days too, between showers. Sargassum arrives mostly from spring to late summer; resorts rake their beaches. More in our beaches guide.

Snorkeling and diving

March to June brings calm water and good visibility at Negril, Montego Bay’s marine park and Ocho Rios, with fewer crowds after Easter. Storm swell and river runoff can cloud the water in autumn. See our snorkeling and diving guides.

Hiking

December to April, when Blue Mountain trails are driest; many hikers start the climb to the peak before dawn for sunrise views. Trails to waterfalls around Ocho Rios and Port Antonio are slippery after rain. See our hiking guide.

Music festivals

Rebel Salute in January, Bob Marley’s birthday on February 6, Carnival in Jamaica around Easter, and Reggae Sumfest in July. Festival dates are set by the organizers each year, so check before booking.

Seasons to plan around

The Atlantic hurricane season, June 1 to November 30: according to NOAA’s National Hurricane Center, most activity comes between mid-August and mid-October. If you travel in these months, book flexible rates, buy insurance that covers hurricanes, and follow the Meteorological Service of Jamaica and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM).

The rainy months: May, and September to November, bring heavy afternoon showers, high rivers and occasional road flooding, especially in the mountains. Plan river and waterfall trips for the morning.

Hurricane Melissa recovery: the storm devastated the western parishes in October 2025. Jamaica reopened to visitors in December 2025, and by May 2026 the Jamaica Information Service reported that 75% of hotel rooms and 89% of attractions had reopened, with airports and cruise ports fully operating. Some large resorts reopen from December 2026 into 2027.

Peak weeks: Christmas and New Year, US spring break in March, and Easter (March 26–29, 2027) are the busiest and most expensive times. Book flights and resorts several months ahead.

How long to stay

A week is enough for one resort base plus day trips; ten days to two weeks lets you combine the west coast with Ocho Rios, Kingston and the Blue Mountains or Port Antonio. Our Jamaica travel guide has sample itineraries for short and longer trips.
