Short answer: with 7 days, fly into Montego Bay and split the week between two bases: three nights in Negril for Seven Mile Beach and the West End cliffs, and four in Ocho Rios for Dunn’s River Falls, the Blue Hole and Bob Marley’s birthplace at Nine Mile. With 10 days, keep going across the island to Kingston for the Bob Marley Museum, Port Royal and a day in the Blue Mountains, and fly home from Kingston. With 14 days, add Port Antonio’s rivers and a night in the mountains, or loop through the quiet south coast at Treasure Beach. Roads are slow and winding, so two or three bases work better than a new hotel every night.

The three routes at a glance
| Route | Days | Stops (nights) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beach and waterfalls | 7 | Negril 3, Ocho Rios 3 | First trip, beach time, easy transfers from Montego Bay |
| North coast to Kingston | 10 | Negril 3, Ocho Rios 3, Kingston 3 | Beach plus music, history and the Blue Mountains |
| Around the east: Port Antonio and the mountains | 14 | Negril 3, Ocho Rios 3, Port Antonio 3, Blue Mountains 1, Kingston 3 | Rivers, rainforest, coffee and reggae |
| West and south loop | 14 | Negril 3, Treasure Beach 3, Kingston 2, Blue Mountains 1, Ocho Rios 3, Montego Bay 1 | Quiet beaches, river safaris, fly in and out of Montego Bay |
Most flights land at Sangster International Airport (MBJ) in Montego Bay. Norman Manley International Airport (KIN) in Kingston is the gateway for the capital, the Blue Mountains and Port Antonio, so an “open-jaw” ticket, into Montego Bay and out of Kingston, saves a long drive back. Every arriving passenger must fill in the free online C5 immigration and customs form at enterjamaica.gov.jm, up to 30 days before travel. Entry rules and money are in our Jamaica guide.
Travel times between the main stops
Jamaica has no passenger trains or scheduled domestic flights between the resort towns, so you move by hotel transfer, licensed tourist taxi (JUTA and others, with red PPV plates), private driver, rental car or the Knutsford Express intercity coaches. The North Coast Highway links Negril, Montego Bay, Falmouth and Ocho Rios, and the T3 toll highway crosses the island from Ocho Rios to Kingston. Knutsford Express publishes its schedule only through its booking search, so all times below are approximate road times; allow extra time for traffic and for repairs after Hurricane Melissa in the west and south.
| Leg | How | Time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Montego Bay airport (MBJ) – Negril | Transfer, taxi or coach | about 1 h 30 (about 50 miles) | Approximate |

| Montego Bay – Falmouth (Luminous Lagoon) | Road | about 40 min | Approximate |
| Ocho Rios – Kingston | Road, T3 toll highway | about 1 h 30 | Approximate |
| Ocho Rios – Nine Mile | Tour or driver, mountain roads | about 1–1 h 30 | Approximate |
| Ocho Rios – Port Antonio | Road along the north-east coast | about 2 h | Approximate |

Knutsford Express coaches run on both coasts, with connections to Portland (Port Antonio), St Mary and Negril, according to the company; book on its website or app and check the current departure times, as they can change with road works.
7 days: Negril and Ocho Rios
The classic first week: two beach bases on the west and north coasts, both reached from Montego Bay’s airport, with the Luminous Lagoon on the drive between them.
- Day 1, to Negril: Land at Montego Bay and transfer west (about 1 hour 30). A first swim and sunset on Seven Mile Beach. Sleep: Seven Mile Beach or the West End.
- Day 2, Seven Mile Beach: A long walk on the sand, a boat trip to Booby Cay and a snorkel over the protected reefs. Dinner and reggae on the beach. Sleep: same.
- Day 3, the West End cliffs: Snorkel from the rocks below the cliffs, visit the Negril lighthouse at Jamaica’s westernmost point, and watch the sunset from a cliff-top restaurant. Sleep: same.
- Day 4, east along the coast: Drive past Montego Bay to Falmouth: raft down the Martha Brae, then a night boat trip on the glowing Luminous Lagoon (brightest on moonless nights) before continuing to Ocho Rios. Sleep: Ocho Rios (3 nights).
- Day 5, Dunn’s River Falls: Climb the 600 ft (183 m) of limestone terraces with a park guide early in the morning, ideally on a day with few cruise ships in port, then swim at the Blue Hole. Wear water shoes. Sleep: same.
- Day 6, Nine Mile and Firefly: Half a day with a driver to Bob Marley’s birthplace and mausoleum at Nine Mile, then the view from Firefly, Noël Coward’s hilltop home east of town. Sleep: same.
- Day 7, home: A last morning on the beach, then back to Montego Bay’s airport (about 1 hour 30 to 2 hours), or fly from Kingston (about 1 hour 30 on the toll highway).
Swap it: our Jamaica guide also suggests a shorter west-only trip: two nights in Montego Bay for Doctor’s Cave Beach, Rose Hall Great House and the Martha Brae, then three in Negril. More on each stop is in our Negril, Ocho Rios and Montego Bay guides.
10 days: north coast to Kingston and the Blue Mountains
Ten days lets you see Jamaica beyond the resorts: the capital’s music and museums, the pirate town of Port Royal and the coffee mountains above the city. Fly into Montego Bay and home from Kingston.
- Days 1–3, Negril: As in the 7-day plan: Seven Mile Beach, a snorkel trip and sunset on the West End. Sleep: Seven Mile Beach or the West End (3 nights).
- Day 4, Falmouth and on to Ocho Rios: The Martha Brae and the Luminous Lagoon on the way. Sleep: Ocho Rios (3 nights).
- Day 5, Dunn’s River Falls and the Blue Hole: Climb the falls early, swim in the afternoon. Sleep: same.
- Day 6, Nine Mile: Bob Marley’s birthplace in the hills in the morning; Fern Gully’s green tunnel or an afternoon by the sea. Sleep: same.
- Day 7, to Kingston: Cross the island on the T3 toll highway (about 1 hour 30). Afternoon at Devon House for ice cream and the colonial mansion. Sleep: New Kingston (3 nights).
- Day 8, Bob Marley and reggae: The Bob Marley Museum in his former home and studio, the National Gallery of Jamaica downtown, and the Trench Town Culture Yard. Live music if it is a weekend night. Sleep: same.
- Day 9, the Blue Mountains: A day with a driver up the narrow mountain roads for a coffee farm tour and tasting, and short walks in the cool air of the UNESCO-listed Blue and John Crow Mountains. Sleep: same.
- Day 10, Port Royal and home: Fort Charles and the tilted Giddy House at the end of the Palisadoes spit, fried fish by the sea, then Norman Manley airport, on the way back.
Swap it: if you prefer a round trip from Montego Bay, give Ocho Rios four nights and see Kingston on a long day trip by the toll highway. There is no Kingston page on our site yet; plan the capital from our Jamaica travel guide.
14 days: around the east, Port Antonio and the Blue Mountains
Our Jamaica guide’s around-the-island trip, in order. Port Antonio, in the lush north-east, is old-style Jamaica: rainforest rivers, the Blue Lagoon and quiet coves, with small hotels and villas instead of big resorts.
- Days 1–3, Negril: Beach, snorkeling and sunsets. Sleep: Negril (3 nights).
- Days 4–6, Ocho Rios: The Luminous Lagoon on the drive, Dunn’s River Falls, the Blue Hole and Nine Mile. Sleep: Ocho Rios (3 nights).
- Day 7, to Port Antonio: East along the coast (about 2 hours), stopping at Firefly. A swim at Frenchman’s Cove. Sleep: Port Antonio (3 nights).
- Day 8, the Rio Grande: A slow bamboo raft trip down the river, then the deep Blue Lagoon.
- Day 9, Reach Falls: The cascades and pools of Reach Falls, and a beach afternoon. This is one of the wettest corners of the island, so keep the day flexible for showers.
- Day 10, into the Blue Mountains: Cross toward Kingston and climb into the mountains (allow most of the day with a driver). A coffee farm visit in the afternoon. Sleep: a mountain lodge (1 night).
- Day 11, Blue Mountain Peak and Kingston: A pre-dawn guided hike to watch the sunrise from Jamaica’s highest point, 2,256 m (7,402 ft), then down to the city. Sleep: New Kingston (3 nights).
- Days 12–13, Kingston: The Bob Marley Museum, Devon House, the National Gallery and Trench Town on one day; Port Royal and the beaches of the Palisadoes on the other.
- Day 14, home: Fly from Norman Manley airport, about half an hour from the city.
Bring warm layers and rain gear for the mountain night: it is much cooler and wetter up there than on the coast.
14 days: west and south loop from Montego Bay
If your only flights are to and from Montego Bay, loop around the island instead: west to Negril, along the dry south coast, up to Kingston and the mountains, and back along the north coast. The south coast took the heaviest damage from Hurricane Melissa in October 2025 and has been the slowest to recover, according to the Jamaica Information Service, so confirm that your guesthouse and tours are running before you book.
- Days 1–3, Negril: As above. Sleep: Negril (3 nights).
- Day 4, to Treasure Beach: Along the south coast (about 2 hours). Slow evening in the fishing villages. Sleep: Treasure Beach (3 nights).
- Day 5, Black River: A boat safari up the Black River to see crocodiles and mangroves.
- Day 6, YS Falls: A swim in the pools of YS Falls, then back to the beach.
- Day 7, to Kingston: East via May Pen and the T1 toll highway. Devon House in the afternoon. Sleep: New Kingston (2 nights).
- Day 8, Kingston: The Bob Marley Museum and Port Royal.
- Day 9, the Blue Mountains: Coffee farm and mountain walks. Sleep: a mountain lodge (1 night).
- Day 10, to Ocho Rios: Down from the mountains and north on the T3 highway. Sleep: Ocho Rios (3 nights).
- Days 11–12, Ocho Rios: Dunn’s River Falls, the Blue Hole and Nine Mile.
- Day 13, Falmouth and Montego Bay: The Martha Brae on the way west, the Hip Strip and Doctor’s Cave Beach, and the Luminous Lagoon after dark. Sleep: the Hip Strip (1 night).
- Day 14, home: Sangster airport is about 2 miles (3 km) from the Hip Strip.
Where to sleep, by stop
| Stop | Best area for a short stay | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Negril | Seven Mile Beach (resorts, calm water) or the West End (cliff-top cottages, sunsets) | Stay on one and visit the other |
| Montego Bay | The Hip Strip (Gloucester Avenue) | Walk to the beach and restaurants; minutes from the airport |
| Ocho Rios | In town near the beach, or east toward Boscobel and Oracabessa for calm | Close to Dunn’s River Falls; quieter villas east |
| Kingston | New Kingston, or a hotel in the hills | Central for museums, Devon House and the highway |
| Blue Mountains | A mountain lodge or coffee farm stay | Early start for the peak; cool nights |
| Port Antonio | Small hotels and villas along the coast east of town | Near the Blue Lagoon, Frenchman’s Cove and the Rio Grande |
| South coast | Treasure Beach guesthouses | Quiet; base for Black River and YS Falls |
Most hotels and attractions had reopened after Hurricane Melissa by May 2026, according to the Jamaica Information Service, and more have reopened since; in Montego Bay several large resorts east of the airport reopen from December 2026 into 2027, according to the Jamaica Tourist Board. Check your hotel’s status when you book. Room rates carry tax; see our Jamaica guide for the details.
Alternatives by interest
Beach lovers
Keep it to two bases and give the beach most of the week: four nights in Negril and three in Ocho Rios or on the quieter coast to the east. Seven Mile Beach has the calmest, shallowest water; Doctor’s Cave Beach in Montego Bay and Frenchman’s Cove near Port Antonio are the best day trips. December to April brings the calmest, clearest sea. More ideas are in our beaches guide.
Music lovers
Spend more time in Kingston, the heart of Jamaican music: the Bob Marley Museum, Trench Town, and live sound systems on weekend nights. Add Nine Mile from Ocho Rios, and time your trip for Rebel Salute in January, Bob Marley’s birthday on February 6, or Reggae Sumfest, usually held in Montego Bay in July (the 2027 dates and venue had not been announced as of October 2026).
Hikers and nature lovers
Follow the Port Antonio route and give the Blue Mountains two nights: one for the sunrise hike to Blue Mountain Peak, one for coffee farms and trails. Add river rafting on the Rio Grande and the Martha Brae, and Reach Falls and YS Falls for swimming. The drier months from December to April bring the clearest views from the peaks. See our hiking guide.
Families
Pick one base with a calm beach and take day trips: Seven Mile Beach in Negril or a resort near Ocho Rios. Dunn’s River Falls has a kids’ splash pad as well as the climb, and the Luminous Lagoon at night and river rafting are hits with children. Many all-inclusive resorts include airport transfers, which saves arranging taxis with car seats.
Tips for planning your route
- Pick the season. December to April is driest on the north and west coasts, with February the driest month at Montego Bay; prices peak at Christmas, New Year and Easter. Late April and early June are good value. June to November is hurricane season, with September and October the wettest months. Details are in our best time to visit Jamaica guide.
- Fill in the C5 form. It is free and mandatory for all air arrivals, at enterjamaica.gov.jm; ignore websites that charge for it.
- Book the first transfer. Arrange your airport transfer before you land, and use licensed tourist taxis with PPV plates; agree the fare before you set off.
- Driving. Jamaica drives on the left. The toll highways are fast, but other roads are narrow, winding and potholed, so many visitors prefer a driver for the mountains and Nine Mile.
- Check cruise days. Dunn’s River Falls and Ocho Rios are busiest when ships are in port; go early or on a quiet day.
- Leave slack in hurricane season. From June to November, book flexible rates and follow the Meteorological Service of Jamaica’s forecasts.
Jamaica itinerary FAQ
Is 7 days enough for Jamaica?
Yes for two coastal bases, such as Negril and Ocho Rios, with day trips to Dunn’s River Falls, Nine Mile and the Luminous Lagoon. To add Kingston, the Blue Mountains or Port Antonio, plan 10 to 14 days.
Should I stay in Negril or Montego Bay?
Negril for a beach holiday with the best sunsets; Montego Bay for an easy arrival, the Hip Strip and day trips. Many visitors spend most nights in Negril and only the first or last night in Montego Bay, close to the airport.
Do I need a car in Jamaica?
No. Hotel transfers, licensed tourist taxis, tours and Knutsford Express coaches cover the routes in this guide. A car or a private driver helps in Port Antonio, the Blue Mountains and the south coast, where small hotels are spread out.
How long is the drive from Montego Bay to Ocho Rios?
About 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours along the North Coast Highway, roughly 65 miles (105 km). Stop at Falmouth on the way for the Martha Brae or the Luminous Lagoon.
Is Kingston worth adding?
Yes if you like music, history or mountains: the Bob Marley Museum, Devon House, Port Royal and the Blue Mountains are all close. Kingston is about 1 hour 30 minutes from Ocho Rios on the toll highway, and flying home from Kingston avoids the drive back west.
Has Jamaica recovered from Hurricane Melissa?
Largely, in the tourist areas. By May 2026 the government reported 75% of hotel rooms and 89% of attractions reopened, with airports and cruise ports fully operating, and more hotels have reopened since. The south coast has been slowest to recover, so check your hotel and tours before booking.
What is the best month for a Jamaica road trip?
February, the driest month on the north coast, or any time from December to April. For lower prices with fairly good weather, try late April or early June.
