Short answer: The top places to visit in Jamaica are Negril’s Seven Mile Beach and cliffs, Montego Bay, Ocho Rios and Dunn’s River Falls, Kingston, the Blue Mountains, Port Antonio, Bob Marley’s birthplace at Nine Mile, the Luminous Lagoon near Falmouth, Port Royal and the south coast around Treasure Beach. For a first trip, plan a week with two bases on the north and west coasts, and add Kingston and the mountains if you have longer.
Jamaica is much more than its all-inclusive resorts: it is waterfalls and rivers, misty coffee mountains, reggae, jerk smoke and long white beaches. This list is ordered the way we would recommend the places for a first visit. For each one you get why it made the list, when to go, what not to miss, how to get there and how long to stay, and a practical note.
Two things shape a Jamaica trip in 2026–27. The driest, breeziest weather on the north and west coasts runs from December to April, while June to November is hurricane season, with September and October the wettest months. And the island is still recovering from Hurricane Melissa, which struck the west and south in October 2025: by May 2026 the government reported that 75% of hotel rooms and 89% of attractions had reopened, and more have reopened since. Our best time to visit Jamaica guide covers the seasons month by month.
1. Negril
Why it made the list: Jamaica’s beach and sunset capital, at the island’s western tip. Seven Mile Beach is a long ribbon of pale sand with calm water, and the West End is a coast of low limestone cliffs, cave bars and cliff-jumping spots. Negril bounced back quickly after Melissa: by January 2026, 43 of its hotels had reopened, according to the Jamaica Information Service.
Best time to go: December to April for dry, sunny weather and calm water. Prices are lowest from mid-April to mid-December.
Don’t miss: a swim and a long walk on Seven Mile Beach, a snorkel trip, and sunset from the West End cliffs.
Getting there and how long: most visitors fly into Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay and transfer by road. Stay three or four nights.
Practical note: the West End has smaller cottages and guesthouses, while the beach is lined with resorts; staying on one and visiting the other gives you both sides of Negril. See our Negril travel guide.
2. Montego Bay
Why it made the list: Jamaica’s tourism capital and main gateway sits around a wide bay on the north-west coast, with the island’s busiest airport, a cruise port, big resorts and the bars and beach clubs of the Hip Strip. It is the easiest place to start a trip and a good base for day trips to rivers, great houses and the Luminous Lagoon.
Best time to go: December to April, the driest and breeziest months; February averages only about 42 mm (1.6 in) of rain. October is the wettest month.
Don’t miss: a swim at Doctor’s Cave Beach, a tour of Rose Hall Great House, and dinner on the Hip Strip.
Getting there and how long: Sangster International Airport is on the edge of town, with many nonstop flights from the US and Canada. Stay two or three nights, or use it as a base.
Practical note: Montego Bay was among the areas hardest hit by Melissa. Many hotels are open, but several large resorts are scheduled to reopen only in December 2026 or during 2027, according to the Jamaica Tourist Board, which says the dates may change. Check your hotel’s status before booking. See our Montego Bay travel guide.
3. Ocho Rios and Dunn’s River Falls
Why it made the list: the north coast’s busy resort and cruise town is the base for Jamaica’s most famous waterfall. Dunn’s River Falls tumbles over terraces of rock to the sea, extending over about 600 ft (183 m), and you can climb it with a guide. The area is also full of rivers, gardens and blue swimming holes.
Best time to go: December to April for the driest weather. Visit early on days when cruise ships are not in port, as the falls get very busy.
Don’t miss: the climb up Dunn’s River Falls, a swim at the Blue Hole, and the view from Firefly, Noël Coward’s hilltop home.
Getting there and how long: Ocho Rios is about halfway between Montego Bay and Port Antonio along the north coast highway. Stay three or four nights.
Practical note: wear water shoes for the falls, as the rocks are slippery. Most hotels in Ocho Rios are open; the Jamaica Tourist Board lists some reopenings later in 2026. See our Ocho Rios travel guide.
4. Kingston
Why it made the list: the capital is the heart of Jamaican music and culture. The Bob Marley Museum is in his former home and studio, and the city has the National Gallery of Jamaica, the colonial mansion of Devon House and the Trench Town Culture Yard, where reggae grew up.
Best time to go: December to April. Kingston lies in the rain shadow of the Blue Mountains and gets much less rain than the north coast, about 885 mm (35 in) a year, with February the driest month; highs are 31–33 °C (88–92 °F) all year.
Don’t miss: a tour of the Bob Marley Museum, ice cream at Devon House, and live music on a weekend night.
Getting there and how long: Norman Manley International Airport serves Kingston, or drive from Ocho Rios across the island. Two days is a good start, with the Blue Mountains and Port Royal as add-ons.
Practical note: Kingston is a big, busy city; book your hotel in New Kingston or the hills, and use taxis your hotel recommends. There is no Kingston page on our site yet; plan it from our Jamaica travel guide.
5. The Blue Mountains
Why it made the list: the cool, misty mountains above Kingston rise to 2,256 m (7,402 ft) at Blue Mountain Peak, Jamaica’s highest point, and grow its famous Blue Mountain coffee. The Blue and John Crow Mountains became Jamaica’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015, listed for both nature and culture as a refuge of the Windward Maroons.
Best time to go: December to April, the drier months, for clearer views from the peaks. Nights are cool all year.
Don’t miss: a pre-dawn hike to Blue Mountain Peak to watch the sunrise, and a coffee farm tour with a tasting.
Getting there and how long: the mountains start just above Kingston, but the roads are narrow and winding. Stay one or two nights in a mountain lodge.
Practical note: bring warm layers and rain gear, and hire a local guide or driver for the peak hike and the mountain roads. Plan the trip from our Jamaica travel guide.
6. Port Antonio
Why it made the list: the lush, quiet north-east is old-style Jamaica: rainforest rivers, the deep Blue Lagoon, the white-sand cove of Frenchman’s Cove and the cascades of Reach Falls, far from the big resorts.
Best time to go: December to April. This is one of the wettest parts of the island, so expect some showers in any month.
Don’t miss: a bamboo raft trip on the Rio Grande, a swim in the Blue Lagoon, and an afternoon at Frenchman’s Cove.
Getting there and how long: it is about two hours by road from Ocho Rios, or two hours over the mountains from Kingston. Stay two or three nights.
Practical note: small hotels and villas are the norm here, not all-inclusive resorts, so a rental car or a driver makes exploring much easier. See our Jamaica travel guide.
7. Nine Mile
Why it made the list: the village in the hills of St Ann where Bob Marley was born and where he is buried is a pilgrimage for reggae fans. The tour takes in his childhood home and his mausoleum.
Best time to go: any time of year; February 6, Bob Marley’s birthday, brings celebrations.
Don’t miss: the guided tour of the house and mausoleum, and the views over the hills on the drive up.
Getting there and how long: it is a day trip from Ocho Rios on mountain roads. Allow half a day.
Practical note: the roads are narrow and winding, so go with a tour or a local driver. See our Ocho Rios travel guide.
8. Falmouth and the Luminous Lagoon
Why it made the list: near the Georgian port town of Falmouth, the Luminous Lagoon glows blue-green at night when boats or swimmers disturb the water, thanks to tiny bioluminescent organisms. Nearby, bamboo rafts drift down the Martha Brae River.
Best time to go: any time of year, though the glow is brightest on dark, moonless nights after sunny days.
Don’t miss: a night boat trip on the lagoon, with a swim in the glowing water if your boat stops for it, and a raft ride on the Martha Brae.
Getting there and how long: Falmouth is about 40 minutes east of Montego Bay. Most people visit on an evening tour from Montego Bay or Ocho Rios.
Practical note: Trelawny parish was among those badly damaged by Melissa, so check that your tour operator is running before you book. See our Montego Bay travel guide.
9. Port Royal
Why it made the list: at the tip of the long sand spit that shelters Kingston Harbour, Port Royal was a notorious pirate town until an earthquake sank much of it in 1692. Today it is a small fishing village with old forts and plenty of history.
Best time to go: December to April, as for Kingston.
Don’t miss: Fort Charles and its museum, the tilted Giddy House, and fried fish at a seafront restaurant.
Getting there and how long: it is about half an hour’s drive from central Kingston, past the airport. Allow half a day.
Practical note: combine it with a Kingston stay, or visit on the way to or from Norman Manley airport. See our Jamaica travel guide.
10. Treasure Beach and the south coast
Why it made the list: the dry, quiet south coast is Jamaica without the resorts: Treasure Beach is a string of fishing villages and small guesthouses, and nearby are the crocodile-filled Black River and the cascades of YS Falls.
Best time to go: December to April. The south coast is drier than the north for much of the year.
Don’t miss: a boat safari on the Black River, a swim at YS Falls, and slow evenings in Treasure Beach.
Getting there and how long: it is about two hours by road from Montego Bay or Negril. Stay two or three nights.
Practical note: the south coast took the heaviest damage from Melissa and has been the slowest to recover, according to the Jamaica Information Service. Many places have reopened, including YS Falls according to local press reports, but check that your guesthouse and tours are operating before you go. See our Jamaica travel guide.
How to fit them into one trip
With a week, pick two bases on the north and west coasts: three nights in Negril for the beach and the sunsets, then four in Ocho Rios for Dunn’s River Falls, the Blue Hole and a day trip to Nine Mile, with an evening at the Luminous Lagoon on the drive between them. Montego Bay works as either your first or last stop, since most flights land there.
With ten days to two weeks, continue east: two or three nights in Port Antonio, then over the Blue Mountains to Kingston for the Bob Marley Museum and Port Royal, with a night in the mountains for the sunrise hike. Fly home from Kingston, or loop back west via the south coast and Treasure Beach.
