Short answer: with 7 days, spend three nights on Caye Caulker for the reef and three in San Ignacio for Maya temples, the Actun Tunichil Muknal cave and a day at Tikal. With 10 days, start inland in San Ignacio, cross the Hummingbird Highway to the Garifuna village of Hopkins and the beaches of Placencia, then fly to Ambergris Caye. With 14 days, do it all at a slower pace: Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker, four nights in Cayo, then Hopkins, the Cockscomb jaguar sanctuary and Placencia. Belize is small, water taxis and short Tropic Air flights link the coast, and the longest road leg is about four hours.

Almost every international flight lands at Philip Goldson International Airport (BZE) near Belize City, two or three hours from many US gateways. From there, water taxis leave the Belize City terminal for the northern cayes, Tropic Air flies hourly to San Pedro and Caye Caulker and daily to Placencia, and the Western Highway runs to San Ignacio. Plan the trip as a loop from Belize City, or fly in and out of Belize City with a short flight at each end.
Travel times between the main stops
Water taxi times come from the San Pedro Belize Express (Belize Water Taxi) and flight frequencies from Tropic Air; road times are approximate. Buses run from Belize City to San Ignacio, Dangriga and Placencia’s junction, but most visitors use shuttles, a hire car or a short flight.

Boat crossings can be rough when a winter cold front (“norther”) blows through, and small-plane flights have tight baggage limits, so pack light. Leaving Belize by land or by water to Guatemala or Mexico, you pay a BZ$40 (US$20) departure fee in cash; by air it is included in your ticket.
7 days: Caye Caulker and San Ignacio
The reef first, then the jungle. Fly in and out of Belize City.
- Day 1, to Caye Caulker: Land at Belize City, take the water taxi shuttle to the terminal (about 25 minutes) and the boat to Caye Caulker (about 45 minutes), or fly in a few minutes with Tropic Air. Sunset swim at the Split. Sleep: Caye Caulker.
- Day 2, snorkeling: A full-day boat trip to the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley, with stops in the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve; operators collect the reserve fees. Sleep: same.
- Day 3, the Blue Hole or slow time: Divers can do the long, early Great Blue Hole and Lighthouse Reef trip (with a stop at Half Moon Caye’s booby colony); others kayak, paddleboard, or look for manatees in the north channel. Sleep: same.
- Day 4, to San Ignacio: Morning water taxi to Belize City, then about 2 hours west by shuttle or hire car. Stop at the Belize Zoo on the way, then an evening in town. Sleep: San Ignacio.
- Day 5, Actun Tunichil Muknal: A full-day guided trip: about 45 minutes by road and a 45-minute jungle hike with stream crossings, then a swim into the cave to see Maya pottery and skeletons, including the “Crystal Maiden”. Physically demanding; children under a set age are not allowed. Sleep: same.
- Day 6, Xunantunich or Tikal: Cross the Mopan River on the hand-cranked ferry and climb El Castillo at Xunantunich, then a cave-tubing or canoe trip; or join a day tour across the border to Tikal in Guatemala (bring your passport and the BZ$40 exit fee). Sleep: same.
- Day 7, home: About 2 hours back to Belize City’s airport; leave enough time for traffic.
Swap it: prefer resorts, restaurants and beaches to Caye Caulker’s “go slow” village? Stay on Ambergris Caye instead (about 1 h 30 by water taxi); Hol Chan is closer to San Pedro. More on each stop: Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye.
10 days: San Ignacio, Hopkins, Placencia and Ambergris Caye
This loop starts inland, follows the Hummingbird Highway to the south coast, and ends on the reef. You will want a hire car or private shuttles for days 1–7, then a flight. Fly in and out of Belize City.

- Day 2, Actun Tunichil Muknal: The guided cave trip, a full day. Sleep: same.

- Day 6, to Placencia: About an hour south. Walk the Sidewalk and the long beach. Sleep: Placencia.
- Day 7, Laughing Bird Caye: A boat to the national park’s tiny island for snorkeling, or the Silk Cayes; from March to June, around the full moons, divers can see whale sharks at Gladden Spit. Sleep: same.
- Day 8, to Ambergris Caye: Drop the car and fly from Placencia to San Pedro via Belize City (Tropic Air). Afternoon on the beach by golf cart. Sleep: San Pedro (Ambergris Caye).
- Day 9, Hol Chan: Snorkel the Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark Ray Alley, a short boat ride from San Pedro. Sleep: same.
- Day 10, home: Fly or take the water taxi back to Belize City and the airport.
Swap it: skip the car by flying Belize City–Placencia for the south and using a shuttle for San Ignacio. More: Placencia and Ambergris Caye; for Tikal, see our Tikal National Park guide.
14 days: the whole of Belize
Two weeks lets you do the islands, Cayo and the south without rushing, and leave a spare day for weather. Fly in and out of Belize City; the best months are February to May, when seas are calm and the water clearest, with whale sharks off Placencia from March.
- Days 1–3, Ambergris Caye: Fly or water-taxi to San Pedro. Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley, a day at Mexico Rocks or the Bacalar Chico reserve in the north, and the Blue Hole trip for divers. Sleep: San Pedro (3 nights).

- Day 11, Cockscomb: Jaguar-preserve trails and waterfalls; evening drumming in the village.
- Day 12, to Placencia: About an hour south. Sleep: Placencia (2 nights).
- Day 13, the southern cayes: Laughing Bird Caye, the Silk Cayes, whale sharks in season, or the Monkey River trip for howler monkeys and manatees.
- Day 14, home: Fly from Placencia to Belize City (about 45 minutes) to connect with your international flight.
Want more Maya sites? Swap Caye Caulker for two nights on the New River for Lamanai, reached by boat from Orange Walk, or cross into Guatemala for two nights in Flores and an early start at Tikal. Want to keep going north? Water taxis link San Pedro and Caye Caulker with Chetumal in Mexico, for Bacalar and Tulum.
Where to sleep, by stop
| Stop | Best area for a short stay | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Ambergris Caye | San Pedro town or just south of it | Walk to restaurants and the dive and snorkel boats; the north is quieter but needs a boat or golf cart |
| Caye Caulker | Near the Split or the front (east) side | Everything is on foot; the water taxi dock is central |
| Cayo | San Ignacio town, or a jungle lodge along the Macal or Mopan rivers | Tours to ATM, Xunantunich, Caracol and Tikal pick up here |
| Hopkins | The village or the beach road just south | Garifuna culture, the beach and Cockscomb nearby |
| Placencia | Placencia Village, or Maya Beach on the peninsula | Boats to the cayes leave from the village; the airstrip is close |
Hotels add a 9% accommodation tax, and most other goods and services carry 12.5% general sales tax. The Belize dollar is fixed at two to the US dollar, and US dollars are accepted almost everywhere.
Alternatives by interest
Divers and snorkelers
Give the reef six or seven nights: Ambergris Caye for Hol Chan and the Blue Hole (the Blue Hole Natural Monument charges non-nationals BZ$60 a day, usually collected by the operator), then Placencia for the southern cayes and, from March to June, the whale sharks of Gladden Spit. March to May has the calmest seas and best visibility. See our diving and snorkeling guides.
Maya ruins and cave lovers
Spend five nights in Cayo for ATM, Xunantunich, Caracol and Tikal, and add Lamanai on the New River. February to April is best inland, with drier trails before the hottest weeks.
Beach lovers
Belize’s best beaches are on the Placencia peninsula and around Hopkins; the cayes have more water than sand, with swimming from docks and at the Split. Split a week between Placencia and Ambergris Caye. See our beach guides.
Wildlife and birdwatchers
Add Cockscomb for jaguar country, the Monkey River trip from Placencia for howler monkeys and manatees, and Half Moon Caye’s red-footed boobies on a Blue Hole trip. A Cayo jungle lodge puts toucans and parrots at breakfast.
Families
Keep it to two bases, Ambergris Caye and San Ignacio, with cave tubing, Xunantunich and the Belize Zoo inland. Check the ATM cave’s minimum age before you book.
Tips for planning your route
- Travel in the dry season if you can. February to May is driest, with March and April the best months on the reef; June to November is the wet season and hurricane season, wettest from September to November, when some businesses close.
- Book the holiday weeks early. Christmas, New Year and Easter (26–29 March 2027) are the busiest and most expensive.
- Keep a spare day before your flight home. Winter cold fronts can make boat crossings rough for a day or two.
- Carry cash for border crossings. The BZ$40 (US$20) departure fee for leaving by land or water is cash only.
- Lobster season matters to food lovers. It runs from July 1 to the end of February, with Lobsterfests when it reopens.
- Hire cars for the mainland only. The cayes use golf carts and bicycles; Caye Caulker is car-free.
Belize itinerary FAQ
Is 7 days enough for Belize?
Yes for one island and Cayo: three nights on the reef and three in San Ignacio cover snorkeling, the ATM cave and a Maya temple or Tikal. Add the south coast with 10 days or more.
Caye Caulker or Ambergris Caye?
Caye Caulker for a small, car-free, laid-back village that is cheaper and closer to Belize City (about 45 minutes by water taxi). Ambergris Caye for resorts, more restaurants and the quickest access to Hol Chan (about 1 h 30 from Belize City). They are 30 minutes apart, so you can do both.
Should I go to the islands or the jungle first?
Either works. Finishing on the reef is relaxing, but some travelers prefer to do the islands first and end near the airport in Cayo. Don’t dive in the 24 hours before you fly.
Do I need a car in Belize?
Not for the 7-day route: water taxis, shuttles and tours with pick-up cover it. For the Hummingbird Highway, Hopkins and Placencia, a car gives the most freedom, or fly to Placencia instead.
Can I visit Tikal from Belize?
Yes, on a day tour from San Ignacio across the border at Benque Viejo. Bring your passport and BZ$40 (US$20) in cash for the Belize departure fee. To see Tikal at sunrise, stay a night in Flores or near the park; see our Guatemala travel guide.
How do I combine Belize with Mexico?
Water taxis link San Pedro with Chetumal (about 1 h 40) and buses cross to Bacalar and Tulum. See our Bacalar and Tulum guides.
What is the best month for a Belize trip?
March or April: the driest months, with calm seas, the best reef visibility and the start of the whale-shark season off Placencia. See the best time to visit Belize.
