Short answer: the best time to visit Albania is June and September for the coast, with hot sun, a warm sea and far fewer crowds than in July and August, and May and October for Tirana, Berat and Gjirokastër, when it is warm but not scorching. July and August are the hottest and busiest months on the Riviera, with the highest prices. For hiking in the Albanian Alps, come from mid-June to September, when the trails and guesthouses are open.

Albania weather month by month

The Albanian Institute of Geosciences does not publish station normals online, so the figures we quote come from the nearest official long-term record, the German Weather Service’s (DWD) climate table for Tirana airport (temperatures 1961–1990): average highs of about 12 °C (53 °F) in January and 31 °C (87 °F) in July and August, and nights of about 2 °C (35 °F) in January. Tirana gets about 1,270 mm (50 in) of rain a year, with November the wettest month, at about 172 mm (6.8 in), but only about 42 mm (1.7 in) in July, and around 11 hours of sunshine a day in midsummer. Recent decades have been warmer, with summer means at Tirana airport about 1.5 °C (3 °F) higher in 1991–2020, and afternoons inland now often pass 35 °C (95 °F). The southern Riviera is similar in summer and wetter in winter: at Corfu, a few kilometers across the strait from Sarandë, the Greek weather service records highs of about 31 °C (89 °F) in August and about 190 mm (7.5 in) of rain in December.

Albania month by month

January

Mild on the coast and cool inland, with highs of about 12 °C (53 °F) in Tirana and frosty nights, and one of the wettest months; the mountains are snowbound. New Year (January 1 and 2) is a public holiday. Many Riviera hotels and restaurants are closed, but Tirana, Durrës, Berat and Gjirokastër stay open and are very cheap.

February

Still cool and wet, with highs of about 13 °C (55 °F) in Tirana and snow on the mountains around the capital and above Berat. A quiet, low-priced month for city visits and museums.

March

Spring begins, with highs of about 16 °C (60 °F) in Tirana, blossom in the valleys and some heavy rain. Summer Day (March 14), a spring festival loved above all in Elbasan, and Nevruz (March 22) are public holidays. In 2027, Catholic Easter falls on March 28, and the end of Ramadan (Bajram) also falls in March.

April

Mild and green, with highs of about 19 °C (66 °F), wildflowers everywhere and few visitors: ideal for Berat, Gjirokastër and Butrint. The rivers run high, and rafting in the Osumi canyon near Berat is at its best in spring. The sea is still too cool for most swimmers. Wildfire rules apply from April to October.

May

One of the best months for the stone towns and walking, with highs of about 24 °C (75 °F) and long, sunny days. Labour Day (May 1) is a public holiday, and in 2027 Orthodox Easter falls on May 2. Riviera guesthouses start opening, and by late May the sea is warm enough for the brave.

June

A favorite month: highs of about 28 °C (82 °F) in Tirana, a sea warm enough for most swimmers from about mid-June, and beaches still uncrowded. The high mountain passes in the Albanian Alps usually open from mid-June, starting the hiking season around Theth and Valbona.

July

Hot and dry, with highs of about 31 °C (87 °F) on long-term averages and heatwaves above 38 °C (100 °F) no longer rare in Tirana and Berat. The Riviera, Ksamil in particular, is packed with Albanian, Kosovar and foreign holidaymakers, and prices double in some places. Sightsee in the morning and evening, and book rooms and ferries ahead.

August

As hot and busy as July, with the warmest sea of the year and the most crowded beaches and roads. Korçë holds its beer festival in August, and Riviera towns host summer concerts. Mountain hiking is at its peak, though the high trails are busy too.

September

Many travelers’ favorite month on the coast: still hot early on, with highs of about 27 °C (81 °F), a warm sea, open beach bars and far fewer people once Albanian schools return. Storms become more frequent later in the month. A good month for Berat’s grape harvest and for hiking in the Alps before the guesthouses close.

October

Mild and golden, with highs of about 22 °C (71 °F) in Tirana and the sea still swimmable in early October. Mother Teresa Day (October 19) is a public holiday. Rain returns from late October, and many Riviera hotels and beach bars close for the winter. A lovely month for Tirana, Berat and Gjirokastër.

November

Cool and the wettest month, with highs of about 17 °C (63 °F) in Tirana and heavy rain that can flood low-lying roads, especially in the north. Independence Day (November 28) and Liberation Day (November 29) fill Tirana’s squares with flags and concerts. Coastal resorts are largely closed.

December

Cool and wet, with highs of about 13 °C (55 °F) in Tirana and snow in the mountains. Tirana has Christmas lights and markets, and National Youth Day (December 8) and Christmas Day are public holidays. The cheapest month for city stays.

Best time to visit by region

The Albanian Riviera

June and September are ideal: warm, settled weather, a warm sea and fewer people. July and August are hot and crowded, with the highest prices, especially in Ksamil and Dhërmi. From November to April many hotels, beach bars and restaurants close, ferries run less often and the Llogara Pass can see snow, but Sarandë stays open. See our Albanian Riviera guide.

Tirana

April to June and September to October, when the city is mild and café life moves outdoors. July and August are hot, often above 35 °C (95 °F) in the afternoon, and many residents leave for the coast. Winters are cool and rainy but lively. See our Tirana guide.

Berat and Gjirokastër

April to June, when the hills are green and the river runs high, and September to October, for the grape harvest and golden light. Berat’s enclosed valley is very hot in July and August, so sightsee early and late. See our Berat guide.

Durrës and the Adriatic coast

June and September for the beach; the shallow Adriatic warms early, and July and August are hot, crowded and noisy. From November to March, beach hotels are quiet or closed, but the city and its sights stay open. See our Durrës guide.

The Albanian Alps, Theth and Valbona

Mid-June to September, when the passes are clear of snow and the guesthouses and summer transport run. Snow can linger on the high passes into June, and the first snow often falls in November. Outside the season, the valleys are hard to reach and most guesthouses close.

Best time for beaches, hiking and festivals

Beaches and swimming

From mid-June to early October, with the warmest sea in August. June and September give you the same sea with far fewer people. Many beaches have paid sun loungers in season. See our beaches and boat trips guides.

Hiking

April, May and October for the lower hills, Butrint and the stone towns; mid-June to September for the Alps, including the Valbona to Theth crossing. Avoid midday hikes in July and August. See our hiking guide.

Festivals

March for Summer Day and Nevruz, Easter (both Catholic and Orthodox), August for Korçë’s beer festival and summer concerts on the Riviera, and November 28 and 29 for Independence and Liberation days. The Gjirokastër National Folklore Festival is held every few years.

Seasons to plan around

The summer peak, July and August: the Riviera is packed, prices double in some places and parking near beaches is hard to find. Book rooms and ferries ahead, or come in June or September.

Heat and wildfires: heatwaves above 38 °C (100 °F) are no longer rare inland. Wildfires are a serious risk from April to October, and causing one is a criminal offense: never light fires or barbecues outdoors.

Winter rain and closures: from late October to March, heavy rain sometimes floods low-lying roads, especially in the north, and many Riviera hotels, beach bars and restaurants close from November to April. Mountain guesthouses close outside the summer season.

Moving holidays: Albania celebrates Catholic and Orthodox Easter and both Bajram festivals, whose dates change every year. In 2027, Catholic Easter is on March 28 and Orthodox Easter on May 2; the Bajrams fall in March and May.

How long to stay

A week covers Tirana, Berat and the Riviera; ten days allows a southern loop with Gjirokastër and Butrint; two weeks adds the Alps, from mid-June to September. Our Albania travel guide has sample 7-, 10- and 14-day itineraries.
