Short answer: with 7 days, stay on the south coast and explore the whole island from one base: Bridgetown and the Carlisle Bay wrecks, a catamaran trip to swim with turtles, Harrison’s Cave and the Atlantic boulders of Bathsheba, the far north and St Nicholas Abbey, and the Friday-night fish fry at Oistins. With 10 days, split your stay between the lively south coast and the calm west coast. With 14 days, either add two nights on the wild east coast or fly about 45 minutes to Saint Lucia for the Pitons. Barbados is small, so these routes are about beaches, boats and day trips, not long drives.
This guide turns the sample trips on our Barbados travel guide into day-by-day plans, with drive times, the best area to sleep and what to book ahead. December to April is the dry, breezy high season, with February to April the driest months; May, June and November are good-value shoulder months. Our best time to visit Barbados guide goes month by month, and our top 10 places to visit in Barbados explains each stop. For a plan built around your dates and interests, use our AI trip planner. Barbados has one airport, Grantley Adams International (BGI), on the south coast about 13 km (8 miles) from Bridgetown, so every route starts and ends there. Before you fly, every traveler must complete the free online Immigration and Customs Form at travelform.gov.bb, which opens 72 hours before arrival.
Travel times between the main stops
Barbados is about 34 km (21 miles) long, and nothing on the island is much more than an hour’s drive from anywhere else, but roads are narrow and winding and traffic around Bridgetown is slow at rush hour. There is no official table of drive times, so the road times below are approximate; the Saint Lucia flight time comes from airline schedules.
| Leg | How | Time | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airport – south coast (Oistins to Hastings) | Taxi or car | about 15–25 min (approximate) | Road distance |
| Airport – Bridgetown | Taxi, car or bus | about 25–35 min (approximate; 13 km) | Road distance |
| Airport – west coast (Holetown) | Taxi or car | about 40–60 min (approximate) | Road distance |
| Bridgetown – Holetown – Speightstown | Bus, ZR van or car along the coast | about 20–30 min to Holetown, a little more to Speightstown (approximate) | Road distance |
| South or west coast – Harrison’s Cave | Car or tour | about 25–35 min (approximate) | Road distance |
| West coast – Bathsheba (east coast) | Car or tour | about 40–50 min (approximate) | Road distance |
| Speightstown – St Nicholas Abbey and the Animal Flower Cave | Car or tour | about 20–30 min (approximate) | Road distance |
| Barbados – Saint Lucia (George F. L. Charles, Castries) | Flight (interCaribbean, Caribbean Airlines) | about 40–45 min (approximate) | Flight schedules |
| Rodney Bay – Soufrière (Saint Lucia) | Road / water taxi | about 1 h 30 / about 45 min | Our Saint Lucia guide |
Buses and ZR vans charge a flat fare of BDS$3.50 (US$1.75); carry exact change in Barbados dollars. They run often along the south and west coasts and thin out in the evening. For the east coast and the north, a rental car or a taxi driver’s island tour is easier. Barbados drives on the left, and rental companies arrange the temporary visitor’s driving permit you need.
7 days: the whole island from the south coast
One base, no packing and unpacking. The south coast has the best-value hotels, restaurants within walking distance and the easiest buses. Hire a car for days 4 and 5, or book a driver.
- Day 1, settle in: Arrive at Grantley Adams, check in and swim at your nearest beach: Accra (Rockley), Dover or Miami Beach. Dinner in St Lawrence Gap. Sleep: south coast, between Hastings and St Lawrence Gap (6 nights).
- Day 2, Bridgetown and Carlisle Bay: Walk the Careenage, the Chamberlain Bridge and the Parliament Buildings, then the Nidhe Israel Synagogue. In the afternoon, snorkel the shallow shipwrecks of Carlisle Bay on a boat trip or straight from the beach.
- Day 3, the west coast by catamaran: A half-day or full-day catamaran cruise along the Platinum Coast, with stops to swim with green and hawksbill turtles and to snorkel over a wreck. Morning trips usually have the calmest water.
- Day 4, caves, gardens and Bathsheba: Harrison’s Cave by electric tram, Hunte’s Gardens in its sinkhole, then over the hills to the giant boulders of Bathsheba and lunch above the Atlantic. Andromeda Botanic Gardens is on the way.
- Day 5, the north: St Nicholas Abbey, a 1658 Jacobean mansion with a rum distillery, the view from Cherry Tree Hill, the Barbados Wildlife Reserve’s green monkeys and the Animal Flower Cave at the northern tip. Back via Speightstown.
- Day 6, the Garrison and the south-east: The Barbados Museum and George Washington House at the Garrison in the morning, then Crane Beach’s pinkish sand and Bottom Bay’s palm-fringed cove. On Friday, end at the Oistins Fish Fry.
- Day 7, home: A last swim, then the short ride to the airport.
Swap it: want calm water and quiet evenings more than nightlife? Base yourself on the west coast instead, at Holetown or Paynes Bay, and do the same day trips. Plan around the calendar: the Oistins Fish Fry is busiest on Friday nights, the Barbados National Trust’s free Hike Barbados walks are on Sunday mornings, and cricket and horse racing at the Garrison happen in the dry season.
10 days: the south and west coasts
Splitting the stay shows you both sides of Barbados: the busy, sociable south coast and the sheltered Caribbean side, with the best swimming, turtles and sunsets. Start in the south, near the airport, and finish slowly in the west.
- Day 1, south coast: Arrive and swim. Sunset on the Hastings boardwalk. Sleep: south coast (5 nights).
- Day 2, Bridgetown and Carlisle Bay: The historic center and the Garrison, both part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, and an afternoon snorkeling the wrecks.
- Day 3, the interior and Bathsheba: Harrison’s Cave, Hunte’s Gardens, Gun Hill Signal Station and the east coast.
- Day 4, the south-east: Crane Beach and Bottom Bay in the morning, Sunbury Plantation House, then a windsurfing or kitesurfing lesson at Silver Sands (best from December to May).
- Day 5, rum and the fish fry: A tour at the Mount Gay visitor center near Bridgetown, a beach afternoon, and on Friday the Oistins Fish Fry.
- Day 6, to the west coast: A short taxi ride north. Snorkel from the beach in the Folkestone Marine Reserve at Holetown. Sleep: west coast, Holetown to Paynes Bay or Speightstown (4 nights).
- Day 7, turtles by catamaran: A cruise with turtle swims and a wreck snorkel, then a sunset drink in Holetown.
- Day 8, the north: Speightstown’s old waterfront, St Nicholas Abbey, Cherry Tree Hill and the Animal Flower Cave.
- Day 9, a lazy beach day: Mullins or Paynes Bay, a paddleboard or a glass-bottom boat, and dinner on the west coast, where some restaurants ask for smart-casual dress.
- Day 10, home: Allow 40 minutes to an hour to reach the airport from the west coast.
Swap it: visiting in July or early August? Build the south-coast half around Crop Over, the island’s great festival, which ends with the Grand Kadooment parade on the first Monday in August (2 August 2027). Book early: summer brings many visitors home for it.
14 days: three coasts
Two weeks on one small island sounds like a lot, but this route makes each part of Barbados feel like a different place: the lively south, the empty Atlantic side and the calm west. The east coast is for walking, surfing and watching the sea rather than swimming.
- Days 1–5, the south coast: Bridgetown and the Garrison, the Carlisle Bay wrecks, the south-east beaches, Silver Sands and the Oistins Fish Fry. Add a cricket match at Kensington Oval or a morning at the Garrison races in season. Sleep: south coast (5 nights).
- Day 6, to the east coast: By car or taxi via Harrison’s Cave and Hunte’s Gardens. Sunset over the boulders at Bathsheba. Sleep: Bathsheba or Cattlewash (2 nights).
- Day 7, the Scotland District: Andromeda Botanic Gardens, a walk along the old railway line on the coast, rock pools at low tide, and the view from Cherry Tree Hill. Experienced surfers have the Soup Bowl reef break.
- Day 8, to the west coast via the north: St Nicholas Abbey, the Wildlife Reserve and the Animal Flower Cave, then down to Speightstown. Sleep: west coast (6 nights).
- Days 9–13, the west coast: A turtle catamaran, the Folkestone Marine Reserve, a dive on the SS Stavronikita wreck, a sunset sail, a Sunday morning Hike Barbados walk, a rum distillery and plenty of time on Mullins, Gibbes and Paynes Bay.
- Day 14, home.
Sargassum seaweed drifts in mostly from about March to September and lands mainly on the east and south-east coasts; the west coast is usually clear. If it is heavy during your trip, shorten the east-coast stay. More on each coast is in our Barbados guide.
14 days: Barbados and Saint Lucia
Barbados is a flat coral island; Saint Lucia, a short flight west, is volcanic and mountainous, with rainforest, waterfalls and the Pitons. There is no regular passenger ferry, so you fly. Direct flights land at George F. L. Charles Airport near Castries, close to Rodney Bay.
- Days 1–4, the south coast: Bridgetown, Carlisle Bay, an island tour to Harrison’s Cave and Bathsheba, and the Oistins Fish Fry. Sleep: south coast (4 nights).
- Days 5–8, the west coast: The turtle catamaran, Holetown and the Folkestone reserve, the north and St Nicholas Abbey. Sleep: west coast (4 nights).
- Day 9, to Saint Lucia: Fly from Grantley Adams (about 45 minutes). Evening on Reduit Beach. Sleep: Rodney Bay (2 nights).
- Day 10, the north of Saint Lucia: Pigeon Island’s fort ruins and beaches, and on Friday the Gros Islet street party.
- Day 11, to Soufrière: About 1.5 hours by road, or 45 minutes by water taxi, past Marigot Bay. The Sulphur Springs and mud baths, and Diamond Falls. Sleep: Soufrière (3 nights).
- Day 12, the Pitons: Climb Gros Piton with a local guide (about two hours up), or snorkel in the marine reserve below the Pitons.
- Day 13, rainforest and cocoa: A cocoa estate, a waterfall swim and a slow afternoon.
- Day 14, home: Fly home from Saint Lucia, or back to Barbados for your international flight.
Island-hopping flights are small and timetables change, so book them together with your international tickets and leave a buffer before a long-haul flight home. Saint Lucia’s trails, fees and where to stay are in our Saint Lucia guide.
Where to sleep, by stop
| Stop | Best area for a short stay | Why |
|---|---|---|
| South coast | Hastings, Rockley (Accra Beach), Worthing or St Lawrence Gap | The best-value hotels and apartments, restaurants and bars on foot, frequent buses, close to the airport |
| South-east | Near Crane Beach or Silver Sands | Cliff-top views, Atlantic beaches and wind sports; quieter, a car helps |
| West coast | Holetown and Paynes Bay, or Speightstown and Mullins further north | Calm water, turtles, sunsets; the island’s luxury resorts and villas, and quieter evenings |
| East coast | Bathsheba or Cattlewash | A handful of small inns and guesthouses above the surf; peaceful and remote |
| Saint Lucia | Rodney Bay, then Soufrière | Beaches and restaurants in the north; the Pitons and nature in the south-west |
Room prices in Barbados are often quoted before tax. Hotels add 7.5% VAT on accommodation, the Room Rate Levy of BDS$8.75 to BDS$35 (US$4.38 to US$17.50) per bedroom per night, depending on the hotel’s class, and usually a 10% service charge. Vacation rentals and villas pay 3.75% of the nightly rate, up to BDS$35 per bedroom per night. The Barbados dollar is fixed at BDS$2 to US$1.
Alternatives by interest
Snorkelers and divers
Stay on the west coast for most of the trip. Snorkel from the beach in the Folkestone Marine Reserve, which has no fee for beach snorkeling, take a turtle catamaran, and dive the Carlisle Bay wrecks and the big SS Stavronikita off the west coast. February to June brings the calmest, clearest water. Don’t touch coral or turtles, and use reef-safe sunscreen. See our snorkeling and diving guides.
Surfers and kitesurfers
Split the trip between the south coast, with gentle breaks for beginners and kitesurfing at Silver Sands from December to May, and Bathsheba, where the Soup Bowl reef break is for experienced surfers only. Atlantic beaches have strong rip currents, so swim where locals do and follow lifeguard flags. See our surfing guide.
Families
Choose one base with a flat walk to a calm beach: Rockley, Dover or Worthing on the south coast, or Paynes Bay on the west. Harrison’s Cave by tram, the Wildlife Reserve’s green monkeys, a glass-bottom boat and the Friday fish fry are easy wins with children. Children under 18 traveling with an adult who is not their parent need a notarized consent letter from a parent.
History, rum and food lovers
Barbados calls itself the birthplace of rum. Visit Mount Gay near Bridgetown, St Nicholas Abbey’s distillery and Foursquare, stop in a village rum shop, and plan around the Barbados Food and Rum Festival, usually in October. Pair it with the Garrison, the Barbados Museum, George Washington House, Sunbury Plantation House and the synagogue in Bridgetown. Try cou-cou and flying fish, fish cakes, a cutter, and pudding and souse on a Saturday.
Walkers
Join the Barbados National Trust’s free Hike Barbados walks on Sunday mornings, which follow country lanes, gullies and coastal paths, and spend two nights on the east coast for walks in the Scotland District. The dry season, December to April, is cooler and breezier for walking. See our hiking guide.
Tips for planning your route
- Fill in the online form before you fly. The free Immigration and Customs Form at travelform.gov.bb opens 72 hours before arrival and is required for every traveler, babies included. Ignore sites that charge to do it for you.
- Book high season early. Mid-December to mid-April is busiest, with the highest rates over Christmas, New Year and Easter; west coast villas go months ahead.
- Hire a car for two or three days, not the whole trip. Use it for the east coast and the north, and rely on buses, ZR vans and taxis the rest of the time. Taxis are not metered: fares are set by the government, so agree the price before you get in.
- Plan around the calendar. Friday for the Oistins Fish Fry, Sunday morning for Hike Barbados, July and early August for Crop Over, February for the Holetown Festival.
- Mind the storm season. June to November is the wet season, and August to October the peak of hurricane season and the cheapest time; buy travel insurance and stay flexible.
- Bring small Barbados dollars. US dollars are accepted almost everywhere, but buses need exact change and change usually comes in local currency.
Barbados itinerary FAQ
Is 7 days enough for Barbados?
Yes. A week from one base covers Bridgetown, the turtles, Harrison’s Cave, the east coast, the north and the fish fry, with beach time in between. Ten days or more lets you split the stay between two coasts or add another island.
Should I stay on the south or west coast?
The south coast for value, restaurants, nightlife and easy buses; the west coast for calm water, luxury resorts and quiet evenings. On a trip of ten days or more, do both, south first.
Do I need a car in Barbados?
Not for the whole trip. Buses and ZR vans cover the south and west coasts for a flat BDS$3.50. A car or a taxi tour for two or three days makes the east coast and the north much easier. Driving is on the left.
Can I see all of Barbados in a day?
A full-day island tour by taxi can reach Harrison’s Cave, Bathsheba, Cherry Tree Hill and the north in one long loop, but you will only glimpse each place. Two separate days, one for the interior and east coast and one for the north, are much more relaxing.
Can I swim on the east coast?
Mostly not. The Atlantic side has big waves and strong currents; at Bathsheba, swimming is limited to small rock pools at low tide. Swim on the west and south coasts.
Is there a ferry from Barbados to other islands?
No regular passenger ferry. Regional airlines fly to Saint Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, Dominica, Antigua and Trinidad, and small charter airlines run day trips to the Grenadines.
What is the best month for a Barbados trip?
February to April for the driest weather and calmest water; March is the sunniest month. May, June and November are good-value alternatives.
