Ari Atoll Travel Guide

A stunning aerial view of clear turquoise waters with a rocky shoreline, exuding tranquility and natural beauty.

Ari Atoll, west of Malé across the Ariadhoo Channel, is one of the largest atolls in the Maldives and, for many divers and snorkelers, the best. About 80 km (50 miles) long from north to south, it is divided into two administrative atolls: Alif Alif (North Ari), which also includes the small separate atolls of Rasdhoo and Thoddoo, and Alif Dhaal (South Ari). Its western rim faces the open ocean, and its channels and submerged reefs, called thilas, draw manta rays, reef sharks, eagle rays and dense schools of fish. Along the southern rim, the South Ari Marine Protected Area is one of the few places in the world where whale sharks can be seen year-round. Ari has dozens of resorts, among them some of the most famous in the country, and a string of friendly local islands with guesthouses, such as Rasdhoo, Ukulhas, Thoddoo, Mathiveri, Dhigurah and Dhangethi. Resorts are reached by seaplane in 20 to 35 minutes or by speedboat in about 1.5 to 2 hours from the airport. The calmest, driest months are December to April; the southwest monsoon, from May to November, brings more rain, but whale sharks and mantas are present in both seasons.

Ari Atoll: where things are

North Ari (Alif Alif)

The northern half of the atoll has many resorts and some of the most popular guesthouse islands. Ukulhas is known for its long bikini beach and community recycling efforts; Mathiveri, Feridhoo, Himandhoo and Bodufolhudhoo are small, quiet local islands near good reefs. Just northeast of the main atoll, Rasdhoo, the administrative capital of Alif Alif, sits on its own small atoll, famous for dawn dives with hammerhead sharks at the outer reef. Further northeast, the farming island of Thoddoo grows watermelons, papayas and bananas and has the remains of an ancient Buddhist temple.

South Ari (Alif Dhaal)

South Ari is home to the marine protected area for whale sharks. Dhigurah, a long, narrow island with a sandbank tip, is the main guesthouse base for whale shark trips; Dhangethi, Omadhoo, Fenfushi and Mahibadhoo, the atoll capital, are other local islands. Maamigili has the atoll’s domestic airport. Many resorts line the southern and western rims, including islands with overwater villas and an undersea restaurant.

The rims and channels

The western rim faces the open Indian Ocean, while the eastern rim faces the channel toward Malé. Channels (kandu) cut through both rims, and the atoll’s lagoon is dotted with thilas, underwater pinnacles rising to within a few meters of the surface, which are the focus of Ari’s famous dives.

Top things to see in Ari Atoll

Whale sharks in the South Ari Marine Protected Area

The South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA) runs along the southern outer reef of Alif Dhaal between the islands of Dhigurah and Maamigili. According to Visit Maldives, the whale sharks found here show a high site fidelity, so the same individuals are often seen again, and SAMPA has the highest re-sighting rate of any whale shark hotspot in the world; their main behavior here is cruising along the reef. Most are young males, typically 4–8 m (13–26 ft) long. Boat trips from Dhigurah, Dhangethi and nearby resorts search the reef edge, and snorkelers jump in when a whale shark is spotted.

Manta rays

Mantas visit cleaning stations on Ari’s thilas and reefs to be cleaned by small fish and gather to feed on plankton. They move between the eastern and western sides of the atoll with the monsoons: generally the western side from December to April and the eastern side from May to November, but local dive guides know where they are each week.

The thilas: Maaya Thila and Fish Head

Maaya Thila, in North Ari, is one of the Maldives’ best-known dive sites, a small pinnacle circled by white-tip reef sharks, turtles and schools of fish, and famous for night dives. Fish Head (Mushimasmingili Thila), a protected marine area, is known for gray reef sharks and huge schools of fusiliers and blue-striped snappers. Other favorites include Kudarah Thila, Broken Rock and Panettone.

Sandbanks and local island life

Excursions visit sandbanks and uninhabited picnic islands, and the long sandbank at the tip of Dhigurah is one of the prettiest in the country. On local islands, stroll sandy streets to the mosque and the harbor, watch fishermen return in the afternoon and sit in a tea shop with hedhikaa.

Thoddoo’s farms and Buddhist past

Thoddoo is the Maldives’ fruit garden, supplying watermelons and papayas to Malé; visitors can walk through the plantations. A stone Buddha statue found at an excavated temple mound on the island in the 1950s is now in the National Museum in Malé.

Snorkeling, diving and boat trips

Diving

Ari is the heart of Maldivian diving. Resorts and guesthouses have dive centers, and many liveaboards cruise the atoll’s thilas and channels. Expect reef sharks, eagle rays, napoleon wrasse, turtles and big schools of fish; channel dives are drift dives in current, suited to divers with some experience. Rasdhoo’s outer reef is known for scalloped hammerhead sharks seen at dawn in deep blue water. See our diving guide.

Snorkeling

House reefs at many resorts are excellent, and guesthouse operators run snorkeling trips to reefs, turtle spots and sandbanks. Whale shark snorkeling trips are the highlight for many visitors; strong currents are common, so a good swimmer’s fitness and a life vest or buoyancy aid help. See our snorkeling guide.

The whale shark code of conduct

To protect the animals, operators in SAMPA follow a code of conduct: keep at least 3 m (10 ft) from the whale shark’s head and 4 m (13 ft) from its tail, do not touch or ride it, do not use flash photography or scuba-type scooters, do not block its path, and limit the number of swimmers and boats around it. Choose operators that follow the rules and do not chase or crowd the sharks.

Boat trips

Dolphin cruises at sunset, sandbank picnics, fishing trips (traditional handline fishing at dusk is a favorite) and dhoni sails are offered on every island. See our boat trips guide.

Other things to do in Ari Atoll

Food and drink

Resorts serve international cuisine, often with private sandbank and beach dinners and, at one resort, dining under the sea. On local islands, guesthouses cook Maldivian dishes such as mas huni, fish curries, garudhiya and grilled reef fish, and tea shops sell hedhikaa. Thoddoo’s fresh fruit is a treat. Local islands are dry; alcohol is available only at resorts and on licensed liveaboards and “floating bar” boats moored offshore.

Beaches

Every resort has its own beaches; on local islands, swim on the designated tourist beaches in swimwear. Ukulhas, Dhigurah and Thoddoo have some of the best. See our beaches guide.

Water sports

Kayaks, paddleboards, sailing and jet skis are available at resorts and many guesthouses.

Day trips and onward travel

  • Rasdhoo and Kuramathi: from North Ari, dive Rasdhoo’s hammerhead reef or snorkel its lagoon.
  • Resort day passes: guesthouse guests can visit nearby resorts for a day of beaches, lunch and drinks.
  • Vaavu Atoll: southeast of Ari, with channel dives, by speedboat.
  • Malé and Kaafu Atoll: 1.5 to 2 hours by speedboat. See our Kaafu Atoll guide.

Nearby destinations

Getting there and getting around

By seaplane

Most Ari resorts are reached by seaplane from the water aerodrome on the far side of Velana International Airport, a flight of about 20 to 35 minutes over the atolls. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, so guests arriving late may stay a night near Malé or take a speedboat.

By speedboat and ferry

Speedboats take about 1.5 to 2 hours from the airport to North and South Ari, crossing the open Ariadhoo Channel, which can be rough in the southwest monsoon. Shared speedboats run on schedules to the main guesthouse islands, such as Ukulhas, Rasdhoo, Thoddoo, Mathiveri, Dhigurah and Dhangethi. Public ferries from Malé to Ari islands are cheap but slow, taking several hours, and run only on certain days.

By domestic flight

Domestic flights from Velana to Maamigili in South Ari take about 20 to 25 minutes, followed by a short speedboat transfer to nearby resorts and Dhigurah.

Between islands

Your resort or guesthouse arranges transfers; shared speedboats and ferries link local islands, but schedules are limited, especially on Fridays.

When to go and how long to stay

Ari has the same equatorial climate as the rest of the central Maldives, hot all year. The northeast monsoon, from December to April, brings dry, sunny weather, calm seas and the best visibility, especially on the western side of the atoll. The southwest monsoon, from May to November, brings more rain, wind and swell, with rougher speedboat crossings, but mantas feed on the eastern side and whale sharks remain. There is no long-term climate station in Ari Atoll in the World Meteorological Organization’s (WMO) public lists, so the table uses the 1991–2020 normals for Hulhulé (Malé airport), about 60–90 km (37–56 miles) east, from the Maldives Meteorological Service.

Practical tips for Ari Atoll

  • Book whale shark trips early in your stay: sightings are likely but not guaranteed, so leave time for a second try.
  • Choose responsible operators: they follow the whale shark code of conduct and limit boats and swimmers.
  • Check ferry and speedboat schedules: public ferries do not run every day, and shared speedboats may not run on Fridays.
  • Bring a buoyancy aid: currents can be strong on whale shark and manta trips.
  • Respect local-island rules: no alcohol, modest dress in the village, swimwear only on bikini beaches.

Safety

Ari’s main hazards are in the water. Currents on the outer reef and in the channels can be strong; according to the UK government, tidal currents in the Maldives have dragged swimmers away from the shore, resulting in drownings. Snorkel with a guide, stay close to the boat on whale shark trips, and only dive channels within your experience. Boat traffic around whale sharks has injured animals and could injure swimmers; follow your crew’s instructions. Crossings of the Ariadhoo Channel can be rough in the southwest monsoon; make sure life jackets are provided. Many islands are more than an hour from the nearest hyperbaric chamber, so dive conservatively. Medical facilities on local islands are basic; have insurance that covers evacuation and diving. Alcohol is available only at resorts and on licensed boats. For emergencies, call 119 for police, 102 for an ambulance and 191 for the coast guard.

What to pack for Ari Atoll

Reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard and a hat, your own mask and snorkel if you prefer, reef shoes, a light rain jacket from May to November, a dry bag for boat trips, and modest clothes for local islands. Most sockets take British-style (type G) plugs. See our water shoes, wetsuits and travel adapters guides.
