Qingdao Travel Guide

A scenic view of Qingdao's skyline with historical buildings and modern skyscrapers under a cloudy sky.

Qingdao, on the Yellow Sea coast of Shandong province in eastern China, is a seaside city of red roofs, hilly streets, sandy bays and beer. From 1898 to 1914 it was a German concession, and the Germans left behind red-tiled villas, Lutheran and Catholic churches, a governor’s residence and, in 1903, the brewery that makes Tsingtao, China’s most famous beer. Today the old town’s churches, the long Zhanqiao Pier and the villa quarter of Badaguan make a charming contrast with the glass towers along the bay, the Olympic Sailing Center built for the 2008 Games, and the busy beaches where locals swim on summer evenings. Visit the Tsingtao Beer Museum in the original brewery, with tastings of fresh beer, eat clams and seafood on Beer Street, climb the hills of Xiaoyushan and Signal Hill for views over the red roofs, and hike the Taoist temples and granite peaks of Laoshan by the sea. In August, the city hosts one of Asia’s biggest beer festivals. Qingdao has about 10 million people in its wider municipality, high-speed trains to Beijing and Shanghai, and an airport and passenger port designated for the 240-hour visa-free transit. Summers are mild for northern China and winters cold; the best months are May to June and September to October.

North of the old town, the busy shopping streets of Taidong and Beer Street (Dengzhou Road), next to the brewery, have budget and mid-range hotels and plenty of food and drink.

Shilaoren and Laoshan

East along the coast, Shilaoren beach and the seaside villages at the foot of Laoshan have resort hotels and guesthouses, quieter and close to the mountain.

Top things to see in Qingdao

Tsingtao Beer Museum

The Tsingtao Beer Museum occupies the original German brewery buildings of 1903 on Dengzhou Road. Its two main halls cover the history of the company and the brewing process, with old equipment, a working production line and a tasting of fresh beers at the end. A standard ticket costs 60 yuan for adults (50 yuan for students, 30 yuan for seniors aged 60–69) and includes a glass of unfiltered “yuanjiang” beer, a glass of draft beer and a bag of beer nuts; options with guided tours, a light-and-shadow exhibition or an immersive role-play tour cost more. In September and October, the museum is open from 8:00 to 18:30 (last entry 17:30), from 8:30 to 17:30 from November to April, and longer in summer. Book in advance through the museum’s official WeChat account or approved online agents, under your real name, and bring the ID you booked with. Afterward, sample fresh beer on Beer Street outside.

Zhanqiao Pier and Huilan Pavilion

Built in 1892, Zhanqiao Pier runs about 440 m (1,440 ft) into Qingdao Bay, ending at the octagonal Huilan Pavilion, the image on the Tsingtao beer label. Come early morning or at sunset.

St. Michael’s Cathedral and the Protestant church

The twin-spired St. Michael’s Cathedral, completed in 1934, is the landmark of the old town, while the Protestant church (Christ Church), with its green clock tower, overlooks the bay near Signal Hill.

Badaguan

Stroll the leafy streets of Badaguan, past villas in German, Russian, British, Spanish, Danish and Japanese styles, among them the stone Huashi Lou (Flower Stone Building) by the sea.

Xiaoyushan and Signal Hill

Xiaoyushan Park, on a small hill above the No. 1 Bathing Beach, and Signal Hill Park, with its red domes, give the classic views over the red roofs, churches and bays.

More classic sights

  • Former German Governor’s Residence: a 1907 mansion in Jugendstil style, now a museum.

Other things to do in Qingdao

Laoshan

Laoshan, about 40 km (25 miles) east of the center, is a granite mountain rising straight from the sea to about 1,133 m (3,717 ft), long sacred to Taoism. Visit the Taiqing Palace, the largest of its temples, near the shore; climb or ride the cable cars to viewpoints over the coast; and walk among boulders, streams and tea gardens. The scenic area is divided into routes with shuttle buses; allow a full day. See our hiking guide.

Beaches and the sea

Qingdao’s beaches are busiest from July to early September, when lifeguards are on duty and the water is warm enough to swim. Take a sailing trip or harbor cruise from the Olympic Sailing Center, or walk the coastal boardwalk, about 40 km (25 miles), from the old town to Shilaoren. See our beaches and boat trips guides.

The Qingdao International Beer Festival

Held every summer, usually in August, the Qingdao International Beer Festival fills giant beer tents with music, food and beers from around the world, mainly in the West Coast New Area across the bay.

Food and drink

Qingdao is a seafood city. Try clams stir-fried with chili (gala), the classic snack with beer; steamed scallops, sea urchin and mantis shrimp; mackerel dumplings and other seafood dumplings; and Shandong (Lu) dishes, one of China’s eight great cuisines, such as braised sea cucumber and sweet-and-sour carp. Locals buy draft beer in plastic bags, filled straight from the keg at corner shops. Laoshan green tea is grown on the mountain.

Day trips from Qingdao

  • Laoshan: Taoist temples and granite peaks by the sea, about 1 hour east.
  • Golden Beach (Huangdao): a long, fine-sand beach across the bay, through the undersea tunnel.
  • Qufu: the hometown of Confucius, with his temple, family mansion and cemetery (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), about 2.5–3 hours by high-speed train.

Metro line 8 links the airport with Qingdao North station.

By train

Qingdao station, in the old town by the sea, and Qingdao North have high-speed trains to Jinan (about 1.5–2 hours), Beijing South (about 3–4.5 hours), Shanghai (about 5–7 hours), Tai’an, Qufu and Yantai. Book on the 12306 website or app with your passport.

Around town

Qingdao’s metro connects the old town, the stations, May Fourth Square, the airport and the West Coast; buses, taxis and DiDi fill the gaps. The old town is best on foot, though hilly. Ferries and the undersea tunnel cross the bay to Huangdao.

Practical tips for Qingdao

  • Book the beer museum: tickets are real-name and sell out on weekends and holidays.
  • Bring layers: sea breezes make evenings cool, even in summer.
  • Beach season: swim in July and August, at beaches with lifeguards.
  • Check fog and wind: sea fog and strong winds can delay ferries and boat trips.
  • Agree seafood prices: check the price per jin (500 g) and the weight before cooking.
  • Carry your passport: for trains, museums, hotels and checks.

Safety

Qingdao is a safe, clean city. Natural risks are seasonal. Typhoons occasionally reach the Shandong coast from July to September, with strong winds, heavy rain and high waves; follow warnings, which close beaches and suspend ferries and boat trips. Sea fog from April to July can be very dense and disrupt flights, ferries and coastal traffic. Swim only at official beaches when lifeguards are on duty, as currents and waves can be strong; some summers bring green algae blooms to the beaches. Winters are cold and windy, with icy pavements on the hills. Crowds are heavy at Zhanqiao Pier, the beaches and the beer museum during Golden Week (1–7 October), the May Day holiday and summer weekends. Agree prices before eating seafood at restaurants that sell by weight. Carry your passport for tickets and checks. In an emergency, call 110 for police, 120 for an ambulance and 119 for fire.

What to pack for Qingdao

Comfortable walking shoes for the hilly old town and Laoshan, swimwear and sun protection for summer, a light jacket for cool sea breezes, an umbrella for July and August, and a warm coat, hat and gloves for winter. China uses 220 V, with flat two-pin, round two-pin and angled three-pin sockets. See our hiking shoes, rain jackets and travel adapters guides.
