The Garden Route is South Africa’s classic road trip: a stretch of about 200 km (125 miles) of the N2 highway along the southern coast, from Mossel Bay in the Western Cape to the Storms River in the Eastern Cape, between the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma mountains and the Indian Ocean. Along the way are lagoons and lakes, long beaches, indigenous forests of giant yellowwood trees, dramatic river gorges and cliffs, and a string of friendly towns: George, Wilderness, Sedgefield, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. Much of the coast and forest is protected in the Garden Route National Park, run by SANParks, which joins the former Wilderness, Knysna and Tsitsikamma parks. Activities range from gentle lagoon canoeing and forest walks to the world-famous five-day Otter Trail, whale and dolphin watching, surfing, and the bungee jump from the Bloukrans Bridge. Just inland, over spectacular mountain passes, lie the ostrich farms and Cango Caves of Oudtshoorn in the Little Karoo. The Garden Route has a mild climate with rain spread through the year, which keeps it green; summer (December to February) is warm and busy with holidaymakers, and winter (June to August) is cool, quiet and good for whale watching.

Garden Route sections and towns
Mossel Bay
Where the Garden Route begins, Mossel Bay is a working harbor town with sheltered beaches, the Dias Museum complex (with a full-size replica of the caravel in which Bartolomeu Dias landed in 1488 and the Post Office Tree, where sailors left letters), the St Blaize Trail along the cliffs, and boat trips to Seal Island. It is the first stop from Cape Town.
George and Wilderness
George, the largest town, has the airport, golf courses and the start of the Outeniqua and Montagu passes to Oudtshoorn. A few minutes east, Wilderness is a small village beside a long beach, rivers and lakes in the Wilderness section of the Garden Route National Park, with canoeing, the Half-Collared Kingfisher Trail to a forest waterfall, paragliding from the dunes and the Map of Africa viewpoint. Good for nature lovers and couples.
Sedgefield and Knysna
Sedgefield, a laid-back village with a Saturday market and Gericke’s Point, leads on to Knysna, built around a large estuary guarded by two sandstone cliffs, The Heads. Knysna is known for oysters, the waterfront, lagoon cruises, and the surrounding forests, where a handful of elusive forest elephants still roam. It has the widest choice of restaurants and accommodation on the route.
Plettenberg Bay
“Plett” has some of the best beaches on the coast, with Robberg, Central and Lookout beaches, and a peninsula nature reserve, Robberg, run by CapeNature, with a cliff-top hike past a Cape fur seal colony. Plettenberg Bay is a hub for boat-based whale and dolphin watching and for family holidays, with sanctuaries such as Monkeyland and Birds of Eden nearby.
Nature’s Valley and Tsitsikamma
East of Plett, the road passes through forest to Nature’s Valley, a tiny village on a lagoon, and the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park, where rugged cliffs fall into the sea. At Storms River Mouth, a walkway leads along the shore to a suspension bridge over the river mouth. This is the end of the Otter Trail and the start of the Eastern Cape.
Top things to see on the Garden Route
Storms River Mouth and the suspension bridge
The most famous stop in Tsitsikamma: walk about 1 km (0.6 miles) on boardwalks through coastal forest to the suspension bridge over the Storms River mouth, then climb to a viewpoint above it. Kayak and lilo trips go up the gorge, and the rest camp has chalets and campsites right on the shore. Conservation fees apply.
The Otter Trail
South Africa’s most famous hiking trail runs 45 km (28 miles) over five days from Storms River Mouth to Nature’s Valley, along cliffs, beaches and river mouths, with huts each night. Numbers are strictly limited, and bookings with SANParks open months ahead and fill fast. River crossings must be timed with the tides, especially at the Bloukrans River. Fit hikers only. See our hiking guide.
Robberg Nature Reserve
The peninsula south of Plettenberg Bay has three circular hikes of about 2, 5.5 and 9 km (1.2, 3.4 and 5.6 miles), passing a seal colony, middens and caves inhabited by people for tens of thousands of years, and a sand spit. Paths cross rocky shores, so wear good shoes and avoid the longer route in high seas.
Knysna Heads and lagoon
Drive up to the East Head viewpoint for the view over the narrow lagoon entrance, take a cruise to the Featherbed Nature Reserve on the Western Head, and sample oysters at the waterfront. The surrounding forests have walks among ancient yellowwoods, such as at Diepwalle and the Garden of Eden.
Wilderness lakes and the Map of Africa
Paddle a canoe up the Touws River, walk the Kingfisher Trail to the waterfall, and drive up to the Map of Africa viewpoint, where a river bend looks like the outline of the continent. Paragliders take off from the dunes above Wilderness beach.
Bloukrans Bridge
At 216 m (709 ft), the Bloukrans Bridge bungy is one of the highest commercial bridge bungee jumps in the world. Even if you don’t jump, the viewpoint over the gorge is spectacular.
Whale and dolphin watching
Southern right and humpback whales pass the coast from about June to November, and dolphins and Cape fur seals are seen all year. Licensed boat operators in Plettenberg Bay and Mossel Bay run trips; you can also watch from cliffs such as Robberg and the St Blaize Trail. See our boat trips guide.
Other things to do on the Garden Route
- Beaches: Wilderness, Buffalo Bay, Plettenberg Bay’s Robberg and Lookout beaches, and Nature’s Valley. See our beaches guide.
- Surfing: Victoria Bay near George and Plettenberg Bay; Jeffreys Bay, one of the world’s great right-hand point breaks, is about an hour east of Storms River. See our surfing guide.
- Canopy tours and zip lines: in the Tsitsikamma forest.
- Mountain biking: forest trails around Knysna and Harkerville.
- Markets: the Wild Oats Community Farmers’ Market in Sedgefield on Saturdays and the Harvest Market in Plettenberg Bay.
Food and drink
The Garden Route is about seafood and farm produce: Knysna oysters (try them at the waterfront or a lagoon-side bar), fresh line fish, craft beer from Knysna and Plettenberg Bay breweries, and wines from the Plettenberg Bay wine region, which specializes in cool-climate sparkling and Sauvignon Blanc. Oudtshoorn serves ostrich steak. Tip 10–15% in restaurants.
Day trips and nearby
Oudtshoorn and the Cango Caves
About an hour north of George over the Outeniqua Pass, Oudtshoorn is the ostrich capital of the world, with show farms, grand “feather palaces” from the 1900s boom, and the Cango Caves, limestone caverns with guided heritage and adventure tours. Return via the historic Montagu Pass or the dramatic Meiringspoort gorge.
Jeffreys Bay and Gqeberha
East of Tsitsikamma, Jeffreys Bay is a surf town, and Gqeberha is about 2.5 hours from Plettenberg Bay. From Gqeberha, Addo Elephant National Park is the easiest malaria-free safari for Garden Route travelers.
Hermanus and Cape Town
Many trips start in Cape Town and stop in Hermanus or the Overberg on the way to Mossel Bay; the inland Route 62 through the Little Karoo is an alternative.

Getting there and getting around
Driving
A rental car is essential to enjoy the Garden Route. The N2 is a good highway, single lane in each direction for long stretches, with a toll at the Tsitsikamma Toll Plaza between Plettenberg Bay and Storms River. Approximate driving times: Cape Town to Mossel Bay about 4 to 4.5 hours, Mossel Bay to Knysna about 1.5 hours, Knysna to Plettenberg Bay 30 minutes, Plettenberg Bay to Storms River about 1 hour, and Storms River to Gqeberha about 2 hours. Many travelers do a one-way trip, flying into Cape Town and out of Gqeberha, or the reverse; check one-way rental fees.
Flying
George Airport (GRJ) has flights from Cape Town and Johannesburg and rental cars. Plettenberg Bay has a small airport with occasional services. Chief Dawid Stuurman International (PLZ) in Gqeberha serves the eastern end.
Buses and tours
Intercity coaches and the Baz Bus hop-on, hop-off service stop in the main towns, and many guided tours run from Cape Town, but the best places are off the main road, so you’ll see far more with a car.

- Driving: the N2 carries heavy trucks; overtake only where it is safe, watch for pedestrians and animals near towns, and avoid driving at night. Fog is common on the mountain passes.
- Sea and hiking: currents are strong at many beaches; swim at lifeguarded beaches. On coastal hikes, check tide tables, especially for the Otter Trail’s river crossings and Robberg’s rocky sections, and stay well back from cliff edges in high swell.
- Sharks: sharks are present along the coast; follow local signs, avoid swimming at dawn and dusk, and use beaches with lifeguards.
- Wildfires: the fynbos and plantations are fire-prone in hot, dry, windy weather; obey fire bans and report smoke.
- Baboons and monkeys: don’t feed them, and keep food and car windows closed.
- Towns: the Garden Route is generally relaxed, but use normal precautions with valuables and parked cars.
- Malaria: none; the whole Garden Route is malaria-free.
- Emergencies: call 10111 for the police and 10177 for an ambulance, or 112 from a mobile.
