Ella is a small hill-country town in Sri Lanka’s Uva Province, at about 1,040 m (3,400 ft) on the edge of the central highlands, where the mountains fall away through the dramatic Ella Gap toward the southern plains. Once a quiet railway village among tea estates, it has become one of the island’s favorite stops for travelers: a single main street of cafés, guesthouses and bars surrounded by green hills, waterfalls and easy hikes. Come for the sunrise view from Little Adam’s Peak, the climb up Ella Rock, the stone Nine Arches Bridge curving through the jungle, the tea factories and Ravana Falls, and for the cool evenings after the heat of the coast. Ella is also the end of one of Asia’s most famous train rides, through the tea country from Kandy and Nanu Oya; after Cyclone Ditwah damaged the line in November 2025, trains between Nanu Oya and Ella resumed on June 20, 2026, but in October 2026 the section between Kandy and Nanu Oya was still being restored. The driest months are January to March and June to August; October to December is the wettest period.

Ella’s areas and where to stay
Ella is tiny: one main road with the railway station at one end, and lanes winding up the hillsides on either side.
The main street
Along the main road from the railway station to the turnoff for Passara, cafés, restaurants, bars, tour desks and small hotels sit side by side. It is lively in the evening and convenient, but noisy at night.
The hillsides above town
Up the lanes on both sides, guesthouses and homestays look across the valley to Ella Rock or Little Adam’s Peak, many with balconies and home-cooked meals; some are a steep walk from the road, so check access if you have heavy bags.
Along the Passara road and the tea estates
East of town, toward Little Adam’s Peak and the Nine Arches Bridge, and on the tea estates around, boutique hotels and resorts offer pools, quiet and spectacular views, best with tuk-tuks.
Where to stay in Ella
- Main street: for walking to restaurants and the station.
- Hillside guesthouses: views, home cooking and quieter nights.
- Near Little Adam’s Peak: boutique hotels with views of the Ella Gap.
- Tea-estate bungalows: colonial-style stays, best with transport.
Ella is busy from December to April and in July and August; book ahead then.
Top things to see in Ella
Little Adam’s Peak
The easiest of Ella’s classic hikes, a 45-minute to 1-hour walk from the main street (about 2.5 km, or 1.5 miles, each way) through tea bushes to a grassy summit at about 1,140 m (3,740 ft), with views over the Ella Gap and across to Ella Rock. Go at sunrise, when mist fills the valleys. A zipline and a large resort sit near the start of the trail.
The Nine Arches Bridge
About 2 km (1.2 miles) from town at Demodara, this curving viaduct of stone and brick, with nine arches about 25–30 m (80–100 ft) high, was completed around 1921 and is one of the most photographed sights in Sri Lanka. Reach it by tuk-tuk to a nearby path, or by walking from town. Trains between Nanu Oya and Badulla have crossed it again since June 2026; check the timetable if you want to see one pass, and never stand on the bridge or the track when a train is due.
Ella Rock
A more demanding hike of about 4–5 hours round trip, climbing to about 1,350 m (4,430 ft) for a broad view over the plains to the south coast on clear days. The route is poorly signposted, and the classic approach along the railway line from Ella station or Kital Ella involves walking on the tracks; go with a guide or a reliable offline map, start early, and avoid it in heavy rain.
Ravana Falls and Ravana Cave
About 6 km (4 miles) south of town on the road to Wellawaya, Ravana Falls tumbles about 25 m (80 ft) in tiers beside the road; it is most impressive after rain. Legend links it, and the nearby Ravana Cave reached by a steep stairway, to the demon king Ravana of the Ramayana epic.
Tea factories
Several tea factories near Ella run short tours showing how tea is withered, rolled, fermented, dried and graded, with a tasting at the end. Uva tea, grown on the dry, windy eastern slopes, has a distinctive brisk flavor.
More classic sights
- Demodara Loop: a railway spiral near Demodara station where the line tunnels under itself.
- Dowa Rock Temple: a cave temple with an unfinished standing Buddha carved into the rock, between Ella and Bandarawela.
- Ella Spice Garden and cooking classes: demonstrations of Sri Lankan spices and curries.
- Ella Gap viewpoints: lookouts on the road down toward Wellawaya.
Other things to do in Ella
Food and drink
Ella’s main street has the hill country’s widest choice of cafés and restaurants, from rice and curry and kottu to wood-fired pizza and smoothie bowls. Many guesthouses serve generous home-cooked curry dinners, and cooking classes teach dishes such as dhal, coconut sambol and jackfruit curry. Try a cup of local Uva tea in a café with a view. Bars stay open late by Sri Lankan standards, but alcohol is not sold on poya (full-moon) days.
Hiking
Beyond the two classic hikes, trails lead to tea-estate villages, small waterfalls and viewpoints, and a longer walk climbs toward Ella Rock’s neighbor peaks. Guesthouses arrange guides. See our hiking guide.
Ziplines and other activities
A zipline near Little Adam’s Peak flies over the tea and jungle, and yoga classes, Ayurvedic massages and cooking schools fill rainy afternoons.
Day trips from Ella
- Haputale and Lipton’s Seat: the viewpoint where the Scottish tea magnate Thomas Lipton surveyed his estates, about 1–1.5 hours west; go early before the clouds rise.
- Diyaluma Falls: one of the island’s highest waterfalls, about 1.5 hours away, with natural pools above the main drop.
- Horton Plains and World’s End: the high plateau and its sheer escarpment, best reached from Nuwara Eliya or Ohiya. See our Nuwara Eliya guide.
- Udawalawe National Park: reliable elephant safaris, about 2.5 hours south.
- Yala National Park: leopards and elephants, about 2.5–3 hours by road via Wellawaya and Tissamaharama; better with a night. See our Yala guide.

Getting there and getting around
The hill-country train
Ella’s station is on the Main Line between Colombo, Kandy, Nanu Oya and Badulla, the classic scenic route through tea estates, tunnels and cloud forest. After Cyclone Ditwah, Sri Lanka Railways restored the line in stages: trains between Badulla and Ambewela resumed on December 20, 2025, and between Badulla and Nanu Oya, via Ella, on June 20, 2026. Its timetable for the Nanu Oya–Badulla trains listed a morning departure from Nanu Oya at 9 a.m., reaching Ella at about 11:27 a.m., and an afternoon departure from Ella at about 3:52 p.m., reaching Nanu Oya at about 6:06 p.m. In early October 2026, local media reported, citing the railway, that the sections between Kandy and Nanu Oya were still being repaired, so there was no through train from Kandy or Colombo to Ella. Most visitors travel by road to Nanu Oya or Nuwara Eliya and ride the most scenic part, from Nanu Oya through Pattipola and Haputale to Ella, by train. Reserved seats are sold on the department’s seat-reservation website and at stations, and they sell out in the high season; check the current timetable before you go.
By road
By car, Ella is about 5 hours from Kandy, about 2 hours from Nuwara Eliya and about 6–7 hours from Colombo, partly on winding mountain roads. Buses link Ella with Badulla, Bandarawela and Wellawaya, from where buses continue to Tissamaharama (for Yala) and the south coast; the drive to Mirissa takes about 4 hours.
Around Ella
You can walk to the town’s sights and trailheads. Tuk-tuks wait on the main street for trips to the Nine Arches Bridge, Ravana Falls and tea factories; agree on the fare first. Scooters are available to rent, but the roads are steep and winding.
When to go and how long to stay
At about 1,040 m (3,400 ft), Ella has a mild climate, with warm days around 23–27 °C (73–81 °F) and cool nights. It lies on the drier eastern side of the hills, so the southwest monsoon brings less rain than in Nuwara Eliya; June to August is often sunny but windy, and January to March is also mostly dry. The heaviest rain comes from October to December, and April is showery. There is no long-term official weather station in Ella itself, so the table uses the 1991–2020 climate normals for the Department of Meteorology’s station at Bandarawela, about 10 km (6 miles) to the west at 1,226 m (4,022 ft), as submitted to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO): average daily highs and lows, total rain, and days with at least 1 mm of rain. Ella lies lower and is slightly warmer.

Practical tips for Ella
- Check the railway first: in October 2026, trains ran only between Nanu Oya and Badulla; plan road transfers from Kandy.
- Book train seats early: reserved seats on the hill-country trains sell out in the high season.
- Hike early: clouds often roll in by late morning, especially on Ella Rock.
- Carry cash: ATMs are few; many guesthouses and tuk-tuks take cash only.
- Bring layers: nights can be cool, especially from December to February.
- Respect the tea estates: keep to paths and ask before photographing pluckers.
Safety
Ella is relaxed and friendly, and crime is rare. The main hazards are on the trails and tracks. Many visitors walk along the railway to the Nine Arches Bridge or Ella Rock; with trains running again, stay alert, step well clear when a train approaches, and never sit or stand on the bridge or in tunnels. On Ella Rock, people regularly get lost on unmarked paths; go with a guide or a reliable map, tell your guesthouse where you are going and be back before dark. Paths and roads become slippery and prone to landslides in heavy rain, especially from October to December; Cyclone Ditwah caused deadly landslides in the hill country in November 2025. Follow Department of Meteorology forecasts and Disaster Management Center warnings. Mountain roads are steep and winding, with fast buses; ride scooters only if experienced. Hikers occasionally encounter leeches after rain. In an emergency, call 119 for police and 1990 for the Suwa Seriya ambulance.
What to pack for Ella
Comfortable hiking shoes with grip, a light fleece or sweater for evenings, a rain jacket, a hat and sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, leech socks or insect repellent for the rainy months, and clothes covering shoulders and knees for temples. Sri Lanka uses 230 V, with British three-pin (type G) and round-pin (type D) sockets. See our hiking shoes, rain jackets and travel adapters guides.
