Montreux is the jewel of the Swiss Riviera, the sheltered north-east shore of Lake Geneva, where palm trees and flowerbeds line a lakeside promenade and the snowy Dents du Midi rise across the water. It became a resort in the Belle Époque, drew writers and musicians from Lord Byron to Freddie Mercury, and every July hosts one of the world’s most famous music festivals. You come for the medieval Château de Chillon standing in the lake, the UNESCO-listed vineyard terraces of Lavaux just along the shore, a cogwheel train up to the Rochers-de-Naye, Chaplin’s home in Vevey, and the start of the GoldenPass Express to the Bernese Oberland. Give it two or three days.

On the slopes above, villages such as Glion and Caux have grand old hotels and huge views over the lake, reached by funicular and cogwheel train. Best for: views and peace.
Top things to see in Montreux
Prices and hours below were checked on the official sites in October 2026. They change, so check before you go.
The Château de Chillon
Built on a rocky island just off the shore, Chillon is a medieval fortress of the Counts of Savoy and later the Bernese governors, and calls itself Switzerland’s most visited historic monument. Inside are great halls with painted walls, the Count’s bedroom, a chapel with frescoes and the vaulted underground dungeon where the reformer François Bonivard was chained in the 16th century, the story behind Lord Byron’s poem The Prisoner of Chillon; Byron carved his name on a pillar there. Allow about 1 hour 30 minutes.
Tickets and hours. As of October 2026, tickets cost CHF 15 for adults, CHF 12.50 for students and seniors and CHF 7 for children aged 6–15, with a family ticket (two adults and up to five children) at CHF 35; under-6s go free. The castle opens daily from 9:00 to 19:00 from April to September (last entry 18:00), from 9:30 to 18:00 in March and October, and from 10:00 to 17:00 from November to February; it closes on 25 December and 1 January. Book online on busy summer days.
Getting there. Walk along the lakeside promenade from Montreux, about 45 minutes and one of the loveliest walks on the lake; take trolleybus 201 (every 10 to 20 minutes); take the hourly S-Bahn train to Veytaux-Chillon, 6 minutes’ walk away; or arrive by CGN steamer at the “Chillon” landing.
Lavaux vineyard terraces
Between Lausanne and Vevey, about 10,000 terraces held up by some 450 km of stone walls climb steeply from the lake, planted mainly with Chasselas vines. Monks began building them in the 12th century, and today about 180 winemaking families work them across ten communes, including Lutry, Cully, Epesses, Rivaz, Saint-Saphorin and Chexbres. UNESCO listed Lavaux as a World Heritage Site in 2007. Locals say the vines ripen under “three suns”: the sun in the sky, its reflection on the lake and the warmth stored in the stone walls.
How to visit. Walk the marked paths through the vines, for example from Lutry or Cully to Saint-Saphorin, with trains along the shore to bring you back; the “Route des Grands Crus” walk is about 3 km. Stop at a caveau, a village wine bar run by the growers, to taste Chasselas from Dézaley, Calamin or Epesses. The Lavaux Express, a little road train, runs 1 hour 15 minute loops through the vineyards from Lutry and Cully from April to early November (CHF 17 for adults as of October 2026), with evening tasting trains on weekends in summer. Trains from Montreux and Vevey to Cully or Lutry take 15 to 25 minutes. See our wine tasting guide.
Rochers-de-Naye
A cogwheel train climbs more than 1,600 m from Montreux via Glion and Caux to the Rochers-de-Naye (2,042 m) in under an hour, with views over the whole of Lake Geneva to the Alps and the Jura. At the top are a marmot park with several marmot species (in summer), an alpine garden and walking trails, and Santa’s house in December. The train runs all year; the Swiss Travel Pass covers it as far as Haut-de-Caux and gives 50% off beyond, and the Half Fare Card gives 50% off.
Freddie Mercury and the Queen Studio Experience
Queen recorded several albums in Montreux, and Freddie Mercury lived here on and off in his last years. A bronze statue of him, arm raised, stands on the quay by the market hall; it appears on the cover of the single “A Winter’s Tale”. Inside the Casino Barrière, the Queen Studio Experience is a small, free exhibition in the band’s former Mountain Studios.
Chaplin’s World in Vevey
Charlie Chaplin spent his last 25 years at the Manoir de Ban above Vevey, now a museum with his family home, a studio full of film sets and wax figures, and a large park. It is about 15 minutes by bus 212 from Vevey station; it opens daily, generally from 10:00 to 17:00 or 18:00 depending on the season, and closes on 1 January and from 11 to 22 January 2027. Things to do in Montreux
The Montreux Jazz Festival
Founded in 1967 by Claude Nobs, the festival has hosted everyone from Miles Davis and Ella Fitzgerald to Prince, Bowie and today’s stars; Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water” tells the story of the casino fire of 1971. Paid concerts take place in the Auditorium Stravinski and other halls, but much of the festival is free: lakeside stages, bars, food stalls and jam sessions along the quay. The 60th edition took place in 2026, and the 61st runs from 2 to 17 July 2027. Book tickets and rooms early; hotels fill months ahead.
Cruise on a Belle Époque steamer
The CGN’s historic paddle steamers link Montreux with Chillon, Vevey, Lausanne-Ouchy, Évian in France and Geneva. A trip along the Lavaux shore, with the terraces rising above you, is the best way to see them. The Swiss Travel Pass is valid on CGN boats. See our boat trips guide.
Montreux Noël
One of Switzerland’s best-known Christmas markets fills the lakefront with chalets, lights and mulled wine, with Santa flying over the market on a sleigh and a Santa’s house on the Rochers-de-Naye. In 2026, it runs from 20 November to 24 December, daily from 11:00 (10:00 on Saturdays and Sundays) until 21:00–22:00, and until 17:00 on Christmas Eve.
Eat and drink on the Riviera
Lake perch fillets (filets de perche) with fries and lemon butter are the local classic, best eaten on a terrace by the water; in winter, try a fondue or a papet vaudois, leeks and potatoes with a smoked Vaud sausage. The Saturday market in Vevey, on one of the largest squares in Europe, spreads out produce, cheese and flowers, and in summer adds folkloric wine markets where you buy a glass and taste local growers’ wines. Lavaux’s crisp, mineral Chasselas goes with almost everything on the menu.
Lausanne
Twenty minutes away by train, Lausanne is a hilly student city with a Gothic cathedral (where a night watchman still calls the hours from the tower), the Olympic Museum by the lake at Ouchy, and a lively bar scene in the Flon.
Activities and best months
- Boat tripsCGN, which operates what it calls the world's most prestigious Belle Époque fleet of paddle steamers on Lake Geneva, sails heritage cruises from Lausanne to Le Bouveret via Chillon, Montreux and Vevey; combined cruise tickets cover Chillon Castle near Montreux, Switzerland's most visited historic monument, and Chaplin's World.
- Wine tastingThe Lavaux terraced vineyard, about 730 hectares on steep slopes between Lutry and Vevey (just west of Montreux), has been shaped since the 12th century and is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2007; its winegrowers welcome visitors for tastings, with open-cellar days, the Lutry harvest festival and guided tours.
Day trips from Montreux
The GoldenPass Express runs from Montreux to Interlaken in about 3 hours 15 minutes without a change, up to four times a day, climbing through the vineyards and over to Château-d’Œx, Gstaad and the Simmental. Seat reservations are compulsory in the Prestige class and strongly recommended in first and second class; the Swiss Travel Pass covers the fare but not the reservation. Gruyères, with its castle and cheese dairy, is about an hour away via Montbovon. Geneva is about 1 hour 10 minutes away. Across the lake, the French spa town of Évian is a boat ride away; bring your passport. In winter, Les Diablerets, Leysin and Villars have skiing within an hour.
