El Gouna Travel Guide

Striking modern architecture with arches in El Gouna, Egypt, under a clear blue sky.

El Gouna, on the Red Sea coast about 25 km (16 miles) north of Hurghada airport, is a purpose-built resort town laid out since 1989 on a string of islands and turquoise lagoons cut into the desert shore. With its sand-colored Nubian- and Mediterranean-style buildings, palm-lined canals, marinas and car-light streets served by tuk-tuks and shuttle buses, it feels very different from the rest of Egypt: tidy, relaxed and international, with a year-round community of residents alongside hotel guests. Most of its hotels sit directly on the lagoons, so many rooms have their own small beach or water access. The steady north wind makes El Gouna one of the world’s best kitesurfing spots, the reefs and wrecks offshore are excellent for diving, and the Abu Tig Marina and the Downtown squares are lively in the evenings with restaurants, bars and live music. Every October the El Gouna Film Festival brings stars of Arab cinema to the town. El Gouna is an easy base for boat trips to the islands, desert excursions and day trips to Luxor, and it is quieter than Hurghada, its big neighbor to the south. The best months are March to May and September to November.

El Gouna areas and who each one suits

El Gouna spreads over about 10 km (6 miles) of coast, with a network of lagoons and bridges linking its districts.

Downtown and Kafr El Gouna

The town center, around Tamr Henna Square and Kafr El Gouna, has boutique hotels, restaurants, cafés, shops, a small museum and the bus terminal. It is the most “village-like” part of town and good for a first visit.

Abu Tig Marina

The upscale Abu Tig Marina in the north is the social heart of El Gouna, with yachts, waterfront restaurants and bars, boutique hotels and dive centers, and the departure point for many boat trips.

The lagoon hotels

Most resort hotels sit on the lagoons between Downtown and the sea, each with its own beach, pools and boat jetty; some are family resorts, others adults-only or boutique.

Mangroovy and the north beaches

At the northern edge, Mangroovy Beach and the surrounding kite beaches have the kitesurfing schools, beach clubs and apartments, with mangroves along the shore.

Where to stay in El Gouna

  • Downtown: small hotels near restaurants and shops.
  • Abu Tig Marina: boutique hotels and nightlife.
  • The lagoons: resort hotels with beaches and pools.
  • Mangroovy and the kite beaches: for kitesurfers and longer stays.

Top things to see and do in El Gouna

Kitesurfing

El Gouna is famous for kitesurfing: strong, steady side-shore winds blow from the north on most days of the year, and the shallow, flat water of the lagoons and the beaches around Mangroovy is ideal for learning. Several schools teach complete beginners, with IKO-certified instructors, rescue boats and rental gear, and experienced riders head out to the open sea or by boat to the islands. Windsurfing, wing foiling and stand-up paddling are also popular.

Snorkeling and diving

The reefs north of Hurghada are a short boat ride from El Gouna’s marina. Popular trips visit the reef of Shaab El Erg, where dolphins often rest, the islands and reefs of the Giftun and Gobal area, and the wreck-strewn reef of Abu Nuhas, where several ships sank in the 19th and 20th centuries. Experienced divers can join day trips or liveaboards to the SS Thistlegorm in the Gulf of Suez. See our snorkeling and diving guides.

The beaches and lagoons

Most beaches belong to hotels or beach clubs; day passes are available at several. Zeytuna Beach, on an island reached by boat, and Mangroovy Beach are popular for a day by the sea. The lagoons themselves are calm and shallow, good for children and for kayaking. See our beaches guide.

Abu Tig Marina and Downtown

Evenings in El Gouna center on the marina and Downtown: dinner by the water, cocktails, live music and shops. Downtown’s squares have cafés, galleries and small shops.

The El Gouna Film Festival

Founded in 2017, the El Gouna Film Festival, held in October, screens Arab and international films and brings film stars and directors to the town’s festival center. Hotels fill up during the festival week.

Golf and sports

El Gouna has two golf courses with sea views, as well as tennis, padel, cycling paths and gyms, and it hosts squash and kitesurfing competitions.

Long stays and remote work

El Gouna is popular for long stays, especially in winter. Apartments and villas on the lagoons are rented by the week or month, co-working spaces and cafés have reliable internet, and the town’s supermarkets, pharmacies, hospital, gyms and schools make daily life easy. Kitesurfers often stay for a month or more between October and May. Remember that a tourist visa usually allows a stay of up to 30 days; longer stays need an extension from the passport and immigration authorities.

Desert trips

Jeep, buggy and quad bike trips leave from El Gouna into the Eastern Desert for Bedouin camps, sunset, camel rides and stargazing.

From empty coast to lagoon town

In the late 1980s, this stretch of coast was bare desert and salt flats. The Egyptian developer Orascom began digging lagoons and building the first hotels in 1989, and the town grew island by island, with its own airport strip, marinas, hospital, schools and a branch campus of a German university. Its architects drew on Nubian domes, Arab courtyards and Mediterranean harbors, and the rule of low buildings in earth tones still gives El Gouna its look. Today several thousand people live here year-round, many of them Egyptians from Cairo and Europeans who work remotely or run businesses, which keeps restaurants and shops open even in the quiet months.

Reef rules and protected areas

Many of the reefs visited from El Gouna, including the islands off Hurghada, lie inside protected areas managed by Egypt’s environmental authorities, with per-person fees usually collected by boat operators, and the Red Sea Governorate charges small environmental fees for divers and snorkelers. Boats tie up to fixed mooring buoys instead of anchoring on coral. Don’t touch, stand on or collect coral and shells (exporting them is illegal), don’t feed fish, keep your distance from dolphins and turtles, and use reef-safe sunscreen or a rash guard.

El Gouna with children

With calm, shallow lagoons, few cars, kids’ clubs, playgrounds and family resorts, El Gouna is one of the easiest places in Egypt for young children. Glass-bottom boats show the reef without swimming, kitesurfing schools run courses for older children, and bicycles and tuk-tuks make getting around fun.

Sustainability

El Gouna has long promoted itself as an environmentally minded town, with its own desalination and water recycling, organic farming and solar projects. Some hotels hold eco-labels, and you can visit the lagoons by electric boat.

Other things to do in El Gouna

Food and drink

El Gouna has a wider choice of independent restaurants than most Red Sea resorts: seafood, Italian, Lebanese, Asian and Egyptian restaurants around the marina and Downtown, bakeries and juice bars, and beach clubs with sunset bars. Alcohol is widely available in hotels, restaurants and bars.

Boat trips

Sunset cruises on the lagoons, glass-bottom boats and day trips to the islands leave from the marinas. See our boat trips guide.

Day trips from El Gouna

Hurghada

Hurghada, 20–30 minutes south, has the old quarter of El Dahar, the marina, the Hurghada Museum and more shopping and nightlife; see our Hurghada guide.

Luxor

Luxor, about 4 hours away by road, is a long but popular day trip for Karnak, the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut’s temple; an overnight stay is more relaxing. See our Luxor guide.

The Red Sea Mountains and the monasteries

Jeep trips head inland into the mountains, and to the Monastery of St Anthony and the Monastery of St Paul, among the oldest Christian monasteries in the world, about 3 hours north.

Cairo and Giza

Cairo is about an hour by air from Hurghada or 5–6 hours by road; see our Giza guide.

Getting there and getting around

Flights

Hurghada International Airport (HRG) is about 25 km (16 miles) south; transfers, taxis and ride-hailing cars take about 20–30 minutes. There are direct and charter flights from across Europe and domestic flights from Cairo. Most nationalities buy a visa on arrival in the arrivals hall or an e-visa in advance; the free Sinai stamp does not apply here. See our Egypt travel guide.

By road

Long-distance buses from Cairo stop at El Gouna’s bus station in about 6 hours, and onward to Hurghada and Luxor. Taxis and Uber connect El Gouna and Hurghada.

Getting around

El Gouna is designed for getting around without a car. Shuttle buses loop between Downtown, the marina, the hotels and the beaches, tuk-tuks carry passengers for short trips, and many hotels lend or rent bicycles. Boats link some hotels with Downtown across the lagoons.

When to go and how long to stay

El Gouna shares Hurghada’s dry, sunny climate, with wind most days. Winter (December to February) has warm days around 22–24 °C (72–75 °F), cool evenings and a sea of about 22 °C (72 °F). Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons for the beach. Summer (June to September) is hot, with highs around 36–37 °C (97–99 °F), but the wind and warm sea, about 28 °C (82 °F) in late summer, make it bearable. Kitesurfing is good all year, with the strongest and most reliable wind usually from spring to autumn. El Gouna has no long-term climate station of its own, so the table uses the 1991–2020 climate normals for the Hurghada airport station of the Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA), about 25 km (16 miles) to the south, as published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO): average daily highs and lows, total precipitation, and days with at least 1 mm of rain.

Safety in El Gouna

El Gouna is a gated, well-run town with its own security and very low crime. The main risks are in the water and the sun. Kitesurfing accidents happen when riders lack training or go out in gusty conditions: take lessons from certified schools, respect the kite zones, and never ride near swimmers. Boat and dive safety standards vary, so choose licensed operators with good reviews, ask for a safety briefing, and dive within your training and insurance limits; currents can be strong at offshore reefs. Sharks rarely approach swimmers, but there have been fatal attacks off the Red Sea resorts in recent years; follow local beach closures and lifeguard instructions. Watch for sea urchins and stonefish at reef edges and wear water shoes. The sun and wind can burn quickly, even on cool winter days. Quad bike trips in the desert can be dangerous: wear a helmet and choose careful operators. On the road to Luxor or Cairo, travel in daylight with licensed companies. In an emergency, call 122 for the police, 123 for an ambulance and 126 for the tourist police; El Gouna also has its own hospital.

Practical tips for El Gouna

  • Choose your lagoon: check whether your hotel has a sandy beach, a lagoon or a pool focus, and how far it is from Downtown.
  • Use the shuttles: they are cheap and frequent, and tuk-tuks fill the gaps.
  • Book kite lessons early in peak seasons: schools get busy in spring, autumn and holidays.
  • Bring a windproof layer: evenings by the water are cool in winter.
  • Pay by card: most restaurants and shops accept cards, but keep small cash for tuk-tuks and tips.

What to pack for El Gouna

Swimwear and a rash guard, reef-safe high-factor sunscreen, sunglasses with a strap, a hat, water shoes, a windproof jacket and a sweater for winter evenings, a shorty or full wetsuit for winter kitesurfing and diving, and smart-casual clothes for the marina restaurants. See our wetsuits, water shoes and travel adapters guides.
