Best Time to Visit Brazil: Month-by-Month Guide

Ipanema Beach and the Dois Irmãos mountain at sunset, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Short answer: for most trips, the best time to visit Brazil is in its fall (March to May) or spring (September to November): Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Iguaçu Falls are warm and less crowded, and prices are lower than in summer. Some places have their own peak: July to October for wildlife in the Pantanal, June to September for the blue lagoons of Lençóis Maranhenses, and September to February for the dry, sunny Northeast coast. December to March is Brazil’s hot summer, with the busiest beaches, New Year’s Eve and Carnival, and the highest prices.

Brazil is almost as big as the United States, and its seasons run opposite to North America’s, so the right month depends on where you go. This page explains the weather month by month, region by region, with wildlife seasons, festivals and the holidays that fill everything, as of October 2026. For visas, money, domestic flights and park fees, see our Brazil travel guide, and plan your days with our AI trip planner.

The climate table shows average highs, lows and rain for each month. The monthly figures quoted on this page are the 1991–2020 climate normals of Brazil’s National Institute of Meteorology (INMET) for each city’s station. They show how much the regions differ: the South and Southeast are hot and stormy in summer and mild and drier in winter, the Northeast coast is warm all year with its rains from about February to July, the interior is dry from about May to September, and the Amazon is wet from about December to May.

Brazil month by month

January

Peak summer and the height of the holidays: Brazilian schools are off until early February, and beaches from Florianópolis to the Northeast are packed and expensive. Rio de Janeiro is hot and humid, with highs around 30 °C (86 °F) and heavy afternoon storms; INMET’s Alto da Boa Vista station averages about 229 mm (9 in) in January. The Pantanal floods, and the Amazon is in its rainy season. Gramado’s Natal Luz runs until January 17, 2027.

February

Carnival month in 2027: it runs from Saturday, February 6 to Ash Wednesday, February 10, with Rio’s top samba schools parading in the Sambódromo on the nights of February 7, 8 and 9, according to their league, LIESA. Salvador, Recife and Olinda hold huge street carnivals, and Recife’s Galo da Madrugada parade fills the city on Carnival Saturday. Book flights and hotels months ahead. In Fortaleza and Jericoacoara, the rainy season begins.

March

Summer heat eases a little in the Southeast and crowds drop after Carnival, making late March a good time for Rio and the beaches of Florianópolis, Paraty and Búzios. In the Northeast, March and April are the wettest months around Fortaleza. Easter falls on March 28 in 2027, so Holy Week (with Good Friday on March 26) is busy.

April

One of the best months for Rio and São Paulo: warm, sunnier and much quieter, with São Paulo’s rain dropping to about 87 mm (3.4 in). Tiradentes Day, April 21, is a national holiday. The rains peak in the far Northeast, filling the lagoons of Lençóis Maranhenses, and start on the coast of Salvador and Recife.

May

Mild and pleasant in the Southeast, with highs near 25 °C (77 °F) in Rio. It is the wettest month in Salvador, with about 302 mm (12 in), and the rains are heavy in Recife. In Bonito, the dry season begins and the rivers clear. Labor Day, May 1, is a holiday. A quiet, good-value month across most of the country.

June

The Festas Juninas, harvest festivals with bonfires, forró music and country costumes, take over the Northeast all month, biggest in Campina Grande and Caruaru. The Amazon rivers around Manaus usually peak around June, the time for canoe trips through flooded forest, and the lagoons of Lençóis Maranhenses are full. In the South, nights get cold, and Gramado enters its fondue-and-fireplace season. June is Recife’s wettest month.

July

Winter school holidays bring Brazilian families to the Northeast, Gramado, Bonito and the Pantanal, so book ahead. The dry season begins in the Pantanal, the start of its best wildlife months, and humpback whales arrive off Bahia from about July. Rio is mild and sunny, around 24 °C (75 °F), with clear days for the viewpoints.

August

One of the best months for nature: the Pantanal is dry and its wildlife concentrated, the Lençóis lagoons are still full under blue skies, and in Fortaleza and Jericoacoara the dry, windy season starts, with only about 20 mm (0.8 in) of rain in August at Fortaleza. Seas around Fernando de Noronha calm down and clear. Gramado’s film festival is usually held in August.

September

Spring brings warmer days to the South and Southeast, and the dry season peaks in the interior. Cuiabá, the gateway to the northern Pantanal, is at its hottest, about 36 °C (96 °F), and smoke from wildfires is possible late in the dry season. Independence Day on September 7 is a holiday with morning parades. Iguaçu Falls had its busiest September on record in 2026, so book an early time slot.

October

Excellent for the Northeast coast, the Pantanal’s jaguars and Fernando de Noronha’s diving. Kitesurfing season is in full swing in Jericoacoara. In the Amazon, the rivers are near their lowest, revealing sandy beaches. Our Lady of Aparecida Day, October 12, is a long weekend, and Gramado’s Natal Luz Christmas festival opens on October 22, 2026.

November

A good-value month: the Northeast is dry and sunny, Recife gets only about 39 mm (1.5 in) of rain, and the South is warm before the summer rush. The rains return to the interior and the Southeast. All Souls’ Day (November 2), the Proclamation of the Republic (November 15) and Black Awareness Day (November 20) are national holidays and can make long weekends.

December

Summer begins, and with it the high season. Schools break from mid-December, Christmas fills the beach towns, and New Year’s Eve on Copacabana beach draws millions of people dressed in white. Book flights and beach hotels well ahead. Storms are frequent in the Southeast, and the Pantanal’s rains are back. The Northeast coast is still dry and sunny.

Best time to visit by region

Rio de Janeiro, Paraty and Búzios

April to June and August to November give the best mix of warm weather, clear views and fair prices; December to March is hot, humid, busy and stormy, especially at New Year and Carnival. Búzios is unusually dry for Brazil’s coast, with only about 890 mm (35 in) of rain a year at the nearest INMET station. See our Rio de Janeiro, Paraty and Búzios guides.

São Paulo

Pleasant all year; April to May and August to September are the driest comfortable months. Summer brings short, heavy storms that flood streets, while January and July are quieter as residents go on vacation. See our São Paulo guide.

Salvador, Recife and Fernando de Noronha

The northeastern coast is warm all year, with highs around 27–31 °C (80–88 °F). Most rain falls from April to July, so September to March is best, outside the Carnival price peak. Fernando de Noronha is drier from August to December, with calm, clear seas; from January to May swells bring surf. See our Salvador, Recife and Fernando de Noronha guides.

Fortaleza, Jericoacoara and Lençóis Maranhenses

Rain falls mainly from February to May; from August to December it hardly rains and the trade winds blow hard, the season for kitesurfing. The lagoons of Lençóis Maranhenses are a special case: they fill with the rains and are fullest from about June to September. See our Fortaleza, Jericoacoara and Lençóis Maranhenses guides.

The Amazon (Manaus)

Hot and humid all year, with most of its 2,360 mm (93 in) of rain from December to May. Choose by water level: high water around May to July for canoeing through flooded forest, low water around September to November for trails, beaches and fishing. Lodges are open all year. See our Manaus guide.

The Pantanal and Bonito

The Pantanal is best in the dry season, about July to October, when wildlife gathers at the water and jaguar boat trips run from Porto Jofre; it floods from about December to March. Bonito’s rivers are clearest from about May to September. See our Pantanal and Bonito guides.

Iguaçu Falls

The falls flow all year; their volume depends on rain upstream and can change within days. March to May and September to November bring comfortable temperatures and fewer crowds than the summer and July holidays. See our Foz do Iguaçu guide.

The South: Florianópolis and Gramado

Florianópolis is a summer destination, best from December to April, with March and April quieter and the sea still warm. Gramado has four real seasons: autumn colors from March to May, frosty winters from June to August, hydrangeas from about November, and Natal Luz from late October to mid-January. See our Florianópolis and Gramado guides.

Best time for beaches, wildlife, diving and Carnival

Beaches

In the Southeast and South, December to April; in the Northeast, September to March, avoiding the April–July rains. Rio’s beaches are usable all year, though the sea is cooler in winter. More ideas in our beaches guide.

Wildlife

July to October for the Pantanal’s jaguars, giant otters and birds; the Amazon all year, with different experiences at high and low water. Humpback whales calve around the Abrolhos archipelago off Bahia from about July to November, and southern right whales come close to the coast of Santa Catarina in winter and spring.

Snorkeling and diving

Fernando de Noronha’s calmest, clearest seas are from August to December; Bonito’s rivers are clearest from May to September. See our snorkeling and diving guides.

Carnival and festivals

Carnival in 2027 runs from February 6 to 10; the Festas Juninas fill June in the Northeast; and New Year’s Eve on Copacabana closes the year. Expect the highest prices of the year around Carnival and New Year.

Seasons to plan around

Summer storms, December to March: in Rio, São Paulo and Paraty, heavy afternoon storms can flood streets and cause landslides on mountain roads. Plan outdoor sights for the morning and allow extra time for travel.

The Northeast rains, about February to July: rain comes in heavy showers rather than all day, but beach days are less reliable, with the wettest months running from March and April in Fortaleza to May and June in Salvador and Recife.

Flood season in the Pantanal, about December to March: many roads become muddy or impassable and some lodges are reached only by boat. Late in the dry season, in September and October, wildfires and smoke can affect parts of the region; follow the lodge’s advice.

Low water in the Amazon, about October and November: in drought years, such as 2023 and 2024, very low rivers stranded boats and closed channels. Ask your lodge about current conditions.

Holidays that fill everything: late December to Carnival (February 6–10, 2027), Holy Week (Good Friday is March 26, 2027), the July school holidays and long weekends around national holidays. Book flights and beach hotels early for these dates.

How long to stay

Two weeks lets you combine two or three regions, flying between them: Rio and Iguaçu Falls in a week, plus Salvador, the Pantanal or the Amazon. Three weeks covers a classic loop of Rio, Iguaçu, the Pantanal and Bonito, and the Northeast. Match the route to the season: the Pantanal from July to October, Lençóis Maranhenses from June to September. Our Brazil travel guide has sample 7-day, two-week and three-week itineraries.
