Lake Balaton Travel Guide

Picturesque landscape of Lake Balaton with surrounding hills in Hungary.

Lake Balaton is Hungary’s summer playground, the largest lake in Central Europe: about 77 km long, rarely more than a few metres deep and warm enough for long swims from June to early September. The two shores are very different. The south is flat and sandy, with shallow water you can wade into for hundreds of metres and lively family resorts such as Siófok. The north is hilly and green, with volcanic buttes, vineyards, old villas and villages: the abbey on the Tihany peninsula, the spa promenade of Balatonfüred, the wine cellars of Badacsony and, at the western end, Keszthely and its palace. Come for beaches, sailing, cycling and wine, and give it at least two nights; four lets you see both shores.

Lake Balaton, shore by shore

Balatonfüred and the eastern north shore

Balatonfüred is the north shore’s elegant old spa town, with a lakeside promenade named after the Indian poet Tagore, 19th-century villas, a famous heart hospital, a sailing marina and good restaurants. East of it, Balatonalmádi and Balatonkenese have red-earth cliffs and popular lidos. Best for: a base with trains, boats and restaurants on the doorstep.

The Tihany peninsula

A hilly finger of land almost cutting the lake in two, protected as part of the Balaton Uplands National Park, with a Benedictine abbey on top, a village of thatched houses, two small inner lakes, old geyser cones and lavender fields that bloom in June and July. Best for: views and walks; it is crowded at midday in summer, so stay over or come early.

The Káli Basin, Badacsony and Szigliget

West of Tihany, the north shore becomes wine country. Inland, the Káli Basin is a lovely valley of stone villages, rock “seas” and farm restaurants. Badacsony is a coffin-shaped volcanic hill covered in vineyards, with cellars and terraces looking over the water; Szigliget has a castle ruin on a hill and a small harbour. Best for: wine, food and quiet villages.

Keszthely and the western end

Keszthely is a real town rather than a resort, with a pedestrian main street, the grand Festetics Palace, museums and a lakeside park. The warm thermal lake at Hévíz is 6 km away, and the Kis-Balaton wetlands, a haven for birds and water buffalo, lie just to the south-west. Best for: culture, all-year visits and combining with Hévíz.

Siófok and the south shore

Siófok is Balaton’s biggest resort, nicknamed the “summer capital”, with a long beach, a water tower viewpoint, a marina and nightlife. Further west, Zamárdi, Balatonlelle, Balatonboglár and Fonyód line a shallow, sandy shore that is ideal for children. Inland, the hills of the south shore produce fresh white wines. Best for: families, beach holidays and nightlife.

Top things to see around Lake Balaton

Prices and hours below were checked on the official sites in October 2026. They change, so check before you go.

Tihany Abbey

Founded in 1055 by King Andrew I, who is buried in its Romanesque crypt, the abbey is still home to Benedictine monks. Its twin-towered baroque church, with richly carved wooden altars, stands on the ridge with sweeping views over the lake. The founding charter of 1055 is famous as one of the oldest surviving texts containing Hungarian words. As of October 2026, entry to the abbey and its museum costs 3,400 Ft for adults and 2,500 Ft for students and seniors, with a family ticket for 9,700 Ft; in October it opens about 10:00–17:00 (from 11:15 on Sundays, after Mass). Below the abbey, the walk along the ridge to the Echo Hill viewpoint is free.

Festetics Palace, Keszthely

One of Hungary’s largest country houses, the baroque home of the Festetics family, whose Count György founded Europe’s first agricultural college, the Georgikon, here in 1797. Highlights are the gilded state rooms, the great Helikon Library with tens of thousands of books, a coach museum and formal gardens. In the 2026 main season (June to September), a ticket for the palace and one exhibition cost 5,200 Ft for adults and for the palace and five exhibitions 8,500 Ft, with half-price tickets for under-26s and over-62s; check winter prices on arrival. From October to April it opens 10:00–17:00 and closes on Mondays.

Badacsony and the wine hills

Badacsony’s basalt hill, with its organ-pipe columns, rises straight from the shore. Walk or take a jeep taxi up through the vineyards to the Rózsakő stone and the viewpoints, then taste the local whites, especially Olaszrizling and the rare Kéknyelű, in cellar terraces at sunset. The Kisfaludy House restaurant and the poet’s wine-press house museum are on the slope.

Balatonfüred promenade

Stroll the Tagore promenade under plane trees, see the pillared pavilion over the Kossuth spring of carbonated mineral water, peek at the old Anna Grand Hotel, where the summer Anna Ball has been held since 1825, and visit the villa of the novelist Mór Jókai. The pier is the main boat stop for Tihany and Siófok.

Szigliget castle and the Tapolca Lake Cave

Szigliget’s 13th-century castle ruin crowns a steep hill with one of the best views over the western lake. In Tapolca, 10 km inland, you can row a small boat through the flooded passages of a cave under the town centre.

Beaches, swimming and storm warnings

Balaton’s beaches (strand) are grassy lawns or sandy strips with piers, changing rooms, snack bars selling lángos and inflatables for rent. Many are fenced and charge a small entry fee from about mid-May to mid-September, while around 40 free beaches (szabadstrand) line the shores. As an example, at Siófok’s Grand Beach (Nagystrand) an adult day ticket cost 1,800 Ft in the pre- and post-season and 2,500 Ft from mid-June to the end of August, with cheaper afternoon tickets. The south shore is shallow and sandy, perfect for children; on the north shore the water deepens faster and the bottom can be stony or muddy, so water shoes help. Lifeguards work at the main beaches in high season. See our beaches guide.

Storm warnings: summer storms can whip up the shallow lake in minutes. Flashing yellow lights around the shore warn of strong wind: a slower flash means take care and stay close to the shore, a fast flash means get out of the water and off the lake immediately. Swimming and paddle boarding far from shore are forbidden during a warning, and the water police enforce it.

Boats and ferries

The BAHART company runs passenger boats between the resorts from spring to autumn and a car ferry all year. As of October 2026, the main summer timetable ended on 26 September; on weekends from 2 to 24 October boats still sail between Siófok, Balatonfüred and Tihany and between Fonyód and Badacsony, with one-hour sightseeing cruises from Badacsony, Balatonfüred, Keszthely and Siófok, after which passenger boats stop for the winter. The Szántód–Tihany car ferry, the only way across the lake by car, takes about 10 minutes and runs every 40 minutes from 4 October to 7 November 2026, then about hourly through the winter. From spring, regular boats link most resorts, and sailing boats, SUPs and pedal boats can be rented. See our boat trips guide.

Wine, cycling and festivals

Wine. The Balaton region has several wine districts, mostly white: Badacsony’s volcanic Olaszrizling and Kéknyelű, Balatonfüred-Csopak’s crisp whites, and the fruity wines of the south shore. Small family cellars open their terraces from spring to October; Balatonfüred’s Wine Weeks in August and harvest festivals in September are the highlights. See our wine tasting guide.

Cycling. The Balaton cycle path circles the lake for about 200 km, mostly on dedicated paths and quiet roads; the south shore is flat, the north shore has some hills. Rent bikes in any resort and take them on regional trains or boats to skip sections. See our cycling guide.

Festivals. The lake comes alive in summer with the Kékszalag (Blue Ribbon) sailing race round the lake in July, the Valley of Arts festival in the villages near Kapolcs, open-air concerts in Zamárdi and Siófok, and the Anna Ball in Balatonfüred.

Getting there and getting around

By train. MÁV trains leave Budapest-Déli (many also stop at Kelenföld). On the south shore, the Balaton and Tópart InterCity trains run every two hours, together roughly hourly, reaching Siófok in about 1 hour 15 minutes and Keszthely in about 2 hours 40 minutes. On the north shore, fast trains run every two hours to Balatonfüred and on to Badacsony and Tapolca, with extra summer services. InterCity trains need a seat reservation, included when you buy online; bikes travel with a bike ticket. Off season, some summer trains stop running and timetables thin out, and engineering works can add time, so check the MÁV journey planner.

By car. The M7 motorway runs along the south shore from Budapest (e-matrica vignette required: as of October 2026, 5,550 Ft for one day or 6,900 Ft for ten days for a car), and Road 71 follows the north shore. Parking at popular beaches and in Tihany is paid in summer. By air. Budapest Airport is the main gateway; the small Hévíz–Balaton Airport at Sármellék, near Keszthely, has only a few seasonal flights. By bus. Volánbusz buses link the towns and reach Tihany village and Hévíz, which have no trains.
