Short answer: the best time to visit South Africa depends on where you go. May to September, the dry winter, is the best time for safaris in Kruger and Pilanesberg, when the bush thins out and animals gather at water. Cape Town, the Winelands and the Garden Route are at their best from October to April, with warm, dry summers, though mid-December to mid-January is the busiest and most expensive time. To combine both, September to November works well: the safari season is ending, the Cape is warming up and whales are off the south coast.
This page explains South Africa’s two rainfall patterns, what each month is like from the Cape to Kruger, and when whales, wildflowers, school holidays and public holidays fall, as of October 2026. South Africa weather month by month
Weather month by month
The climate table shows average daily highs and lows and rain for each month from the South African Weather Service (SAWS), as published by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO): 1991–2020 normals for Cape Town, George and Gqeberha, and older SAWS averages for Johannesburg, Durban and Mbombela. The seasons are the reverse of North America’s and Europe’s, and the country has two rainfall patterns. The Western Cape has a Mediterranean climate: Cape Town averages 27 °C (81 °F) by day in January and February and 18 °C (64 °F) in July, and gets about 490 mm (19 in) of rain a year, most of it from May to August, with June the wettest month at about 92 mm (3.6 in). Most of the rest of the country, including Johannesburg, Kruger, Durban and the Drakensberg, gets its rain in summer, from about October to March, often as afternoon thunderstorms, while winter is dry and sunny with cold nights: Johannesburg averages 17 °C (62 °F) by day and 4 °C (39 °F) at night in July. The Garden Route and Gqeberha get rain spread through the year.
South Africa month by month
January
Midsummer: hot and dry in Cape Town, where January and February are the driest months with about 10 mm (0.4 in) of rain each, and hot with afternoon storms inland and in Kruger. The summer school holidays last until schools reopen in mid-January (January 13, 2027, with some schools back on January 11), so coastal towns and parks are very busy early in the month. The strong southeasterly “Cape Doctor” wind blows often.
February
Hot and sunny in the Cape, with the warmest days of the year (about 27 °C / 81 °F in Cape Town and often above 30 °C / 86 °F in Stellenbosch). The wine harvest begins in the Winelands. Crowds thin after the holidays, making it one of the best months for the Cape.
March
Warm with calmer winds in the Cape, and inland storms easing. Human Rights Day (March 21, 2027, a Sunday) is observed on Monday, March 22, and Easter falls early, with Good Friday on March 26 and Family Day on March 29, 2027. Schools break from March 20 to April 5, 2027, so book parks for the Easter weekend.
April
Mild, clear autumn weather, good for the Garden Route, the Drakensberg and Johannesburg. Rains end in the north, and the bush is still green. Freedom Day is on April 27.
May
The dry season starts in the north and safari season begins, with cool mornings in Kruger and Pilanesberg. The Cape turns cooler and rainier and enters its low season, with good hotel deals. Workers’ Day is May 1.
June
Cold nights inland and the wettest month in Cape Town. Southern right whales start to arrive in Walker Bay off Hermanus. Game viewing is excellent. Youth Day is June 16, and the winter school holidays (June 26 to July 19, 2027) bring local families to Kruger, so book rest camps early.
July
The coolest month: about 18 °C (64 °F) by day and 7 °C (45 °F) at night in Cape Town, and frosty mornings on the Highveld, with snow possible in the Drakensberg. It is a prime safari month, and Durban is dry and sunny, at about 23 °C (73 °F). Kruger’s gates open at 06:00 and close at 17:30 from May to July.
August
Dry and warming inland, and windy. Spring flowers start to cover Namaqualand and the West Coast, and whales are calving off Hermanus. National Women’s Day is Monday, August 9, 2027.
September
Spring: warm days, flowers on the West Coast, and among the best whale watching of the year in Hermanus, whose Whale Festival is usually held in late September. The dry season continues in Kruger. Heritage Day is September 24, and a short school break falls in late September or early October.
October
Peak whale watching and the end of the dry safari season, with the first storms inland late in the month. Jacarandas turn Pretoria‘s streets purple from about early October to early November. The Cape is warm and green, and one of the best months for a combined trip.
November
Hot inland, with the rains returning and baby antelope appearing in the parks; summer starts in the Cape. Whales leave by the end of the month. SANParks updates its conservation fees every November 1, and Kruger’s highest malaria-risk season runs from November to April.
December
Hot, long days and the start of the summer school holidays (schools close on December 9 or 11, 2026), when beaches, Cape Town and Kruger fill up and prices peak. The Day of Reconciliation is December 16, followed by Christmas and the Day of Goodwill. Book well ahead for any stay over Christmas and New Year.
Best time to visit by region
Cape Town and the Winelands
February to April and October to November, for warm weather with less wind and fewer crowds. Summer is hot and busy; winter is mild and rainy but green and cheap, with whales in False Bay. See Cape Town and Stellenbosch.
Hermanus and the Whale Coast
September and October for the most whales, warming spring weather and wildflowers; June to November for the whale season as a whole, according to Hermanus Tourism. December to February is the busy beach season. See our Hermanus guide.
The Garden Route and the Eastern Cape
The Garden Route is mild all year, with rain in every month (George gets about 670 mm / 26 in a year); summer is warmest for beaches, and autumn is often calm and sunny. Gqeberha and Addo Elephant National Park are good all year, with mild winters around 20 °C (68 °F) and animals at waterholes in dry spells; Addo is malaria-free.
Kruger and the Lowveld
May to September for game viewing, with warm days around 23–26 °C (73–79 °F) and cold early mornings. October and early November are hot and dry before the rains; summer, from November to March, is hot, green and wet, with newborn animals and migrant birds. See our Kruger guide.
Pilanesberg, Johannesburg and Pretoria

Durban and the Drakensberg
Durban is warm all year: summer is hot and humid with storms, while winter is dry and sunny, about 23 °C (73 °F) by day. The Drakensberg is best for hiking in April to May and September to October; summer brings almost daily thunderstorms and winter brings frost and snow on the high peaks, sometimes closing Sani Pass.
Best time for safaris, whales, beaches and hiking
Safaris
May to September, when grass and leaves die back and animals concentrate at rivers and dams. Summer has green landscapes, newborn animals and birds, but thicker bush and more heat. Go out when the gates open and in the late afternoon.
Whale watching
June to November, with calving mainly in August and September and the peak in September and October. Watch from the cliffs at Hermanus and De Kelders or take a licensed boat trip in Walker Bay or Plettenberg Bay. See our boat trips guide.
Beaches and surfing
November to March in the Cape and on the Garden Route; all year in Durban, where the sea stays around 20 °C (68 °F) or more in winter. See our beaches and surfing guides.
Hiking and wine tasting
Hike Table Mountain and the Garden Route trails in spring and autumn, and the Drakensberg in April to May or September to October; see our hiking guide. For the Winelands, harvest time from February to April is the liveliest; see our wine tasting guide.
Seasons to plan around
School holidays: the long summer holiday, from about December 10, 2026, to January 12, 2027, is the busiest travel period of the year. In 2027, schools also break from March 20 to April 5 and from June 26 to July 19, plus a short break in late September or early October. Book national park accommodation months ahead for these periods.
Summer rains in the north (about October to March): afternoon thunderstorms in Johannesburg, Kruger, Durban and the Drakensberg, with lightning and hail in the mountains; Kruger’s malaria risk, usually low, is highest from November to April, according to SANParks.
Winter in the Cape (May to August): cold fronts bring rain and wind, and rough seas can cancel boat trips and the Robben Island ferry.
Public holidays: a holiday that falls on a Sunday moves to the Monday, making long weekends when parks and coastal towns fill up. Kruger has a daily visitor limit, so book day visits in advance on public holidays.
How long to stay
At least ten days for Cape Town, the Winelands and a safari; two weeks or more to add the Garden Route and Addo, or Durban and the Drakensberg. Fly between Cape Town and Kruger to save time. Our South Africa travel guide has sample 7-, 10- and 14-day itineraries.
