Bled is the picture everyone has of Slovenia: a small green Alpine lake, a baroque church on its only island, a medieval castle on a cliff above the water, and the peaks of the Julian Alps behind. It is a resort town of hotels, cafés and lakeside promenades, busy in summer and lovely in every season. You come to ride a hand-rowed pletna boat to the island and ring the wishing bell, walk the path around the lake, climb to the viewpoints above it, visit the castle, swim in summer and eat the famous cream cake. Bled is also the gateway to the Vintgar gorge, Lake Bohinj and Triglav National Park. Give it one full day, or two or three as a base for the Alps.

Bled, area by area
The lake is about 2 km long and 1.4 km wide, with the island near its western end and the castle on a 130 m cliff on the northern shore. The town spreads along the eastern and northern shores; quieter villages and woods surround the rest.
The town centre and the eastern shore
The bus station, shops, the tourist office, the casino and most of the big hotels sit at the eastern end of the lake, with a promenade and the Park Hotel café, home of the original cream cake. Best for: convenience, restaurants and getting around without a car.
Below the castle and Zaka
The northern shore runs below the castle cliff to the castle bathing area and on to Zaka at the western end, with the rowing centre, a campsite and the start of the walk up to Ojstrica. Best for: swimming, rowing and quieter stays.
Mlino and the southern shore
The village of Mlino, with the main pletna landing, guesthouses and the paths up Straža hill and to Mala Osojnica. Best for: boat trips, viewpoints and good-value guesthouses and apartments.
Top things to see in Bled
Prices and hours below were checked on the official sites in October 2026. They change, so check before you go.
Bled Island and the pletna boats
The only way to the island, apart from rowing yourself, is by pletna: a flat-bottomed wooden boat with a striped canopy, rowed standing up by a pletnar, a trade passed down through local families for generations. Boats leave from Mlino and from the landing below the town centre, and the ride takes about 15–20 minutes each way, with about 40 minutes to an hour on the island. As of October 2026, the return ride costs €20 for adults and €10 for children, paid in cash to the boatman; boats leave when they are full. On the island, 99 stone steps lead up to the Church of the Mother of God on the Lake, with its “wishing bell”: ring it and your wish may come true. As of October 2026, the island entrance costs €12 for adults, €5 for children under 15 and €10.50 for students and seniors (family €24), covering the church, the bell tower and the museum in the Provost’s House. The island is open from 8:30 to 16:00 on winter weekdays (17:00 at weekends), to 18:00 in spring and autumn and to 19:00 from May to September.
Bled Castle
First mentioned in 1011, Bled Castle is one of the oldest castles in Slovenia, perched on a rock 130 m above the lake. The two courtyards hold a museum on the history of the lake, a chapel, a printing workshop where you can print your own certificate, a forge, a wine cellar and a terrace restaurant; the views over the island to the Karavanke mountains are the real reason to come. Walk up from the town in 15–20 minutes, or drive and park below. As of October 2026, tickets cost €19 for adults, €11.50 for students, €7 for children and €16 for seniors (65+), and one child up to 14 goes free with two adults. The castle is open every day: 8:00–20:00 from April to October and 8:00–18:00 from November to March. Buy online to skip the queue in summer.
The lake walk
A flat 6 km path loops around the lake in about 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours, mostly at the water’s edge, with benches, swans and changing views of the island and castle. It is suitable for pushchairs on most stretches. Combine it with a climb to one of the viewpoints.
Ojstrica, Mala Osojnica and Straža viewpoints
The famous view of the island with the castle behind it is from the wooded hills at the western end. Ojstrica is about 20–30 minutes up a steep, rooty path from near Zaka; Mala Osojnica, a little higher, adds steps and ladders for an even wider view. Both are slippery after rain. On the southern shore, Straža is a small hill with a chairlift and, in summer, a toboggan run, and good views over the town.
The Vintgar gorge
About 4 km north of Bled, the Radovna river has cut a 1.6 km gorge between near-vertical walls, crossed by wooden galleries and bridges above green pools and rapids, ending at the Šum waterfall. It is part of Triglav National Park. Since its reopening, visits are one-way, with timed entry and a limit on numbers. As of October 2026, the All-in-One Pass costs €15 for adults and €5 for children up to 15, including gorge entry, an audio-guided “Vintgaring” experience and the “Green Access” transfer from the free central car park on the edge of Bled, from which electric shuttles run to the gorge; helmets are provided and compulsory. The gorge is open from spring to late autumn, generally April to October, and closed in winter. Book a time slot online, especially for mornings in summer.

Swimming, rowing and the cream cake
Lake Bled is warmed by thermal springs on its north-eastern side and reaches about 22–24 °C in July and August, warm enough for long swims. The castle bathing area (Grajsko kopališče) below the cliff has wooden piers, lawns and changing rooms for a fee in summer, and there are free spots along the western shore. You can also rent rowing boats and stand-up paddleboards from several points around the lake in season. Motorboats are not allowed, which keeps the lake quiet. Swimming to the island is popular, but stay clear of the pletna routes and the rowing course.
Bled’s cream cake, blejska kremna rezina or kremšnita, is a square of vanilla custard and whipped cream between layers of puff pastry, made to the same recipe at the Park Hotel since 1953. Locals argue about where it is best; try it at a lakeside terrace.

Getting to Bled and getting around
By bus. The easiest way from Ljubljana: buses leave the main bus station frequently, roughly hourly or more in summer, and take about 1 hour 15 minutes to Bled’s bus station at the eastern end of the lake. Buses continue to Bohinj.
By train. Lesce-Bled station, on the line from Ljubljana to Jesenice and Austria, is 4 km from the lake; local buses and taxis meet trains. As of October 2026, works on this line mean replacement buses on several dates in October and November, so check Slovenian Railways before you travel. The scenic Bohinj railway also stops at the small Bled Jezero station above the western end of the lake.
By air. Ljubljana Airport is about 35 km away, around 30 minutes by car; pre-booked shuttle vans run to Bled hotels. Klagenfurt in Austria is about an hour away.
By car and parking. Bled is 5 minutes off the A2 motorway (e-vignette needed). Parking is limited and strictly enforced: as of October 2026, the central car park near the lake costs €2.50 an hour, short-stay blue zones up to €4.50 an hour, and most municipal car parks charge from 8:00 to 20:00. Parking outside marked bays is fined, and cars may be towed in summer. In high season, arrive before 9:00, or leave the car at your hotel and walk.
Around the lake. Everything is walkable. A little tourist road train circles the lake in summer, and horse-drawn carriages wait near the centre. Bikes and e-bikes can be rented in town.
When to go and how long to stay
Bled has a cool Alpine climate: pleasant summers with afternoon storms, crisp autumns and cold winters when the lake sometimes freezes at the edges. The table uses ARSO’s official 1991–2020 averages for Lesce airfield, 4 km east of the lake at a similar height (509 m).
| Season | Average daily high | Average night low | Rain per month | What it’s like |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | 4–6 °C | −4.5 to −3.3 °C | 61–111 mm | Cold and quiet; snow some years; Christmas lights on the lake |
| Spring (Mar–May) | 11 °C rising to 20 °C | 0–8 °C | 84–102 mm | Fresh green, waterfalls full; Vintgar reopens |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | 24–26 °C | 12–14 °C | 117–125 mm | Warm, swimmable lake, afternoon storms; busiest season |
| Autumn (Sep–Nov) | 20 °C falling to 9 °C | 10 °C falling to 1 °C | 145–158 mm | Golden forests, misty mornings; the wettest months |
The area gets about 1,330 mm of rain a year on about 107 days. Morning mist on the lake is common in autumn and makes for beautiful photos. The busiest hours are 10:00 to 16:00 from June to September, when tour buses arrive from Ljubljana.

Where to stay in Bled

- Town centre: mid-range hotels and apartments a few minutes from the lake and the bus station; easiest without a car.
- Mlino and the southern shore: family-run guesthouses and apartments near the pletna landing and the forest paths.
- Zaka and the villages around: the lakeside campsite at Zaka, and quieter, cheaper rooms in villages such as Ribno, Bohinjska Bela and Zasip, best with a car or bike.
Book well ahead for July and August and summer weekends. A tourist tax of a few euros per adult per night is added to bills.
Practical tips for Bled
- Bring cash for the pletna: as of October 2026, the boatmen take cash only (€20 for adults).
- Go early or late: the island, castle and viewpoints are calm before 9:30 and after 17:00; that is also the best light.
- Book Vintgar online: timed slots sell out on summer mornings.
- Don’t park on verges: enforcement is strict and fines are high.
- Respect the lake: no drones over the lake and island without permission, and don’t feed the swans and ducks.
What to pack for Bled
Comfortable shoes for the lake path, and hiking shoes with good grip for the steep, rooty climb to Ojstrica and Osojnica. A light waterproof is useful in every season (see our guide to rain jackets), with a warm layer for cool mornings and evenings even in summer. In July and August, bring a swimsuit, a towel and water shoes for stony lake entries. In winter, pack a warm coat, hat, gloves and boots with grip for icy paths.
What to pack
- Day packs and anti-theft bagsCarries water, towel and sunscreen down the long stairways to Algarve coves.
- Dry bags and phone pouchesProtects phones and cameras from sand and spray on beaches reached by ferry or steep paths.
- Fleeces and warm layersIt is cooler at sea than on land, especially on morning whale-watching trips.
- HeadlampsLevada routes such as PR1 and PR9 pass through long, dark, wet tunnels.
- Hiking shoes and bootsMadeira's levadas and the Azores' crater rims are wet, rocky and slippery, so grippy shoes matter more than anywhere else in Portugal.
- Quick-dry beach towelsA sand-shedding quick-dry towel packs small for beach days and lido visits.
- Rain jacketsA windproof, waterproof shell keeps you warm on open boats, where wind and spray cool you quickly.
- Reef-friendly sunscreenSummer UV is strong on Portuguese beaches and there is little shade below the cliffs.
- Trekking polesLong stone staircases and steep descents on Madeira's peaks and the Azores' crater rims are easier on the knees with poles.
- Water bottles and hydration packsAlgarve and Alentejo trails are hot and exposed with few refill points.
- Water shoesRocky coves, lava pools and weever fish in shallow sand make water shoes useful.
- WetsuitsOn the west and north coasts the sea stays around 16–18 °C even in summer, so a thin suit helps for long swims.
