Time zones

Time zones puts your time next to any city or time zone, follows daylight saving and shows who is awake with day, dusk and night icons. It is free and updates every minute.

Times update every minute and follow each zone’s daylight saving rules (from your browser’s time zone database).

    About the Time zones

Time zones is a world clock for travelers and the people they keep in touch with. It shows your time next to any cities or time zones you add, follows daylight saving changes for you, and marks each row with a sun, dusk or moon icon so you can see who is awake. It updates every minute. It helps when you are calling home, joining a work meeting from the road, or planning around a long flight.

    How it works

    1. Open the page; your own time is shown first.
    2. Add the cities or time zones you care about.
    3. Read the sun, dusk or moon icon to see who is awake.
    4. Remove cities you no longer need.

Why it helps on a trip

Call home at a good time. Before you ring family, glance at the icon. A moon means it is night there and the call can wait.
No daylight saving mix-ups. Countries change their clocks on different dates, or not at all. The tool follows the changes so the gap is always right.
Easier work on the road. Add your office city and see whether a meeting time falls in your morning or your evening.

    Tips

    • Add home, your office and your next destination before you leave.
    • Check again in the weeks around March, April, October and November, when many countries change clocks.
    • Set your phone's clock to update automatically so your own time matches the local one.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the Time zones tool free?

Yes, it is free and needs no account or app. It works in any phone or computer browser. Your own time comes from your device, and you can add and remove as many cities or time zones as you like. The times update every minute and follow daylight saving changes for each place automatically.

Does it handle daylight saving time?

Yes. Each city follows its own daylight saving rules, so the gap between places is correct all year. This matters because countries change clocks on different dates. The United States and Canada generally change in March and November, the European Union on the last Sundays of March and October, and many countries do not change clocks at all.

What do the sun, dusk and moon icons mean?

Each row shows an icon for the time of day in that place. A sun means daytime, the dusk icon means the evening or morning twilight, and a moon means night. It is a quick way to see whether someone is likely to be awake before you call or message them.

Why do some time zones differ by 30 or 45 minutes?

Most time zones are whole hours from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), but some countries use half-hour or quarter-hour offsets. India, for example, uses UTC+5:30 and Nepal uses UTC+5:45. The Time zones tool shows the exact local time for each place you add, so you do not have to work out the offset yourself.

How can I deal with jet lag after crossing time zones?

Common advice is to switch to local meal and sleep times as soon as you arrive, get daylight in the morning, and keep naps short. Adjusting usually takes a few days, often longer when flying east. Adding your home city to the Time zones tool helps you see how far your body clock is from local time.
