Praia da Marinha is a cove beach in Lagoa, on the Algarve’s central coast, framed by orange limestone cliffs, rock arches and sea stacks, with clear water when the sea is calm. It is free. You park on the clifftop and walk down a steep path and steps. Lifeguards cover it in the bathing season (1 June to 30 September in 2026). Come early in summer, and walk the clifftop trail that starts here.

What it is and why it’s famous
Marinha sits below the hamlet of Caramujeira, between Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra, in the stretch of coast where the Algarve’s cliffs are at their most sculpted. It is not a big beach. What makes it special is the setting: honey-coloured cliffs streaked with orange, natural arches, stacks standing out in the water, and a clifftop above with views along the coast in both directions. Its pictures have been used for years to promote the Algarve, and international travel media regularly list it among Europe’s most beautiful beaches.
It is a natural beach with few facilities. There are no big hotels above it and no promenade, which is a large part of its charm. For other beaches and where to stay, see our Algarve travel guide.
What you’ll see and do
The beach and the rocks
The sand sits in a curve under the cliffs, with rocks and platforms at either end. On calm days the water is clear enough to see fish around the rocks, which makes it a favourite for a snorkel. The arch and stacks change with the light, so the same view looks different at 9:00 and at sunset.
The clifftop viewpoints
Before you go down, walk a few minutes along the clifftop on either side of the car park. From the top you see the arch from above, the stacks lined up offshore and, on clear days, the coast towards Benagil. This is the classic Marinha photo, and it costs nothing but a short walk.
The Seven Hanging Valleys trail
Marinha is one end of the Percurso dos Sete Vales Suspensos (Lagoa trail PR1 LGA), one of the best coastal walks in Portugal. It follows the clifftops for about 5.7 km one way to Praia de Vale Centeanes, dipping into dry “hanging” valleys that end abruptly at the cliff edge. On the way it passes Benagil and the famous sea cave from above, Carvalho beach and the Alfanzina lighthouse. It is linear, so plan a taxi back or walk the return, and allow 2–3 hours one way. There is almost no shade.
How to visit
- Entry: free; it is a public beach.
- Lifeguards: Praia da Marinha is an official supervised bathing beach, with lifeguards from 1 June to 30 September in 2026.
- Blue Flag: it was not on the official 2026 Blue Flag list. Nearby Carvoeiro and Vale Centeanes were.
- Access: a car park on the clifftop, then a steep path and steps down to the sand. Not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.
- What to bring: water, sun protection and shade. Facilities on and above the beach are limited, so don’t count on buying everything there.
When to go and how long to allow
Allow two to three hours for the beach, plus the clifftop viewpoints. In July and August the car park fills by mid-morning and the sand gets crowded by midday, so arrive before 9:30 or come after 17:00 for the softer evening light. May–June and September–October are the best months: the sea is warming up or still warm, and the crowds are thinner. Winter is lovely for the clifftop walk and photos, but there are no lifeguards.
Getting there
By car is easiest: Marinha is signposted off the coast road between Carvoeiro/Lagoa and Armação de Pêra. The A22 motorway across the Algarve has been toll-free since 1 January 2025. Regional Vamus buses serve the main towns but not the beach itself, so from Carvoeiro or Lagoa a taxi is the practical alternative. Walkers can reach it on the Seven Hanging Valleys trail from Benagil or Vale Centeanes.
Safety
- Obey the beach flags: red means no entering the water, yellow means no swimming.
- Keep away from the base of the cliffs and don’t sit under overhangs. Rockfalls happen along this coast.
- On the clifftops, stay well back from the edges and keep children close: the limestone is crumbly.
- Snorkel only on calm days and stay near the beach; boats pass outside the cove.
Combine it with
Benagil and its sea cave are just along the coast: take a boat or a guided kayak tour from Benagil in the morning and spend the afternoon at Marinha. Walk the Seven Hanging Valleys trail early, before the heat. Carvoeiro, a whitewashed village in a cove, is the nearest place for dinner, and Silves, with its red sandstone castle and cathedral, is an easy inland half-day.
