Mont Blanc, at about 4,805 metres, is the highest mountain in the Alps and in western Europe, on the border of France and Italy above Chamonix. Most visitors see it up close without climbing: the Aiguille du Midi cable car takes you to 3,842 metres facing the summit, and the Brévent lift across the valley gives the classic full view. Climbing it is a serious high-mountain ascent, not a hike. There is no permit to buy, but on the normal Goûter route a Haute-Savoie prefectural order requires a named hut booking, carried with your ID.

What it is and why it matters
Mont Blanc’s summit is a dome of ice and snow, so its height changes with the snow cap. In the 2023 survey by Haute-Savoie’s surveyors it measured 4,805.59 metres, about 2 metres lower than two years earlier. The mountain was first climbed from Chamonix in 1786 by Jacques Balmat and Michel-Gabriel Paccard, an ascent often called the birth of mountaineering, and a statue in town shows Balmat pointing the way to the top.
The massif around it is a world of glaciers, granite needles and huts, shared by France, Italy and Switzerland. For the valley, lifts and where to stay, see our Chamonix travel guide.
Seeing Mont Blanc without climbing
Aiguille du Midi
The Compagnie du Mont-Blanc’s cable car climbs in two stages from Chamonix (1,035 m) to 3,842 metres, the closest most people get to the summit. From the terraces you look straight across the glaciers to the dome of Mont Blanc; the glass box Step into the Void hangs over a 1,000-metre drop. As of October 2026 an adult return to the top costs €60.20 to €83.00, cheaper the earlier you book, and every ticket needs a boarding time. Children under 3 are not allowed, and the trip is not recommended under 5. Go on the first clear morning and check the summit webcam before you buy.
Brévent and Flégère
On the sunny side of the valley, the Brévent lifts rise to 2,525 metres, facing the whole range with Mont Blanc in the middle: the best spot for photos of the summit and its glaciers. In autumn 2026 Brévent’s Planpraz stage reopens from 17 October to 1 November, and the top from 12 December for the ski season.
From Italy
Through the Mont Blanc Tunnel, Courmayeur’s Skyway cable car shows the mountain’s steep Italian face.
Climbing Mont Blanc: the rules (as of October 2026)
The normal Goûter route
The most climbed route starts from the Nid d’Aigle (2,372 m), at the top of the Mont Blanc Tramway from Saint-Gervais, and climbs via the Tête Rousse hut (3,165 m) and the Goûter hut (3,815 m) to the summit. Between the two huts it crosses the Grand Couloir, a gully swept by falling rock that has killed many climbers. Above the Goûter hut, the summit day follows a long, exposed snow ridge.
Compulsory hut reservations
Under a Haute-Savoie prefectural order of 15 June 2020, nights in the Nid d’Aigle, Tête Rousse and Goûter huts are booked through a single system with the names of every climber. You must carry proof of the booking, on paper or on your phone, with valid ID, show it at any check and on arrival at the hut. The FFCAM, which runs Tête Rousse and Goûter, does not allow bookings to be resold. Book early: places for the summer go months ahead.
Seasons and closures
In 2026 the Goûter hut was staffed from 30 May to 4 October and Tête Rousse from 29 May to 3 October, and the tramway started on 13 June. During the hot, dry summer both huts were closed for a time because of rockfall on the route; they reopened on 26 August under a municipal order, with the FFCAM warning that reopening “does not mean the route is free of risk”. From October 2026 to May 2027 only the unstaffed winter rooms are open, and a place there must still be reserved.
Guides, acclimatisation and risks
- Hire a guide unless you are an experienced alpinist: certified high-mountain guides work from Chamonix (the Compagnie des Guides de Chamonix and others) and Saint-Gervais. They book months ahead and usually ask you to acclimatise on lower peaks first.
- Altitude: headaches, nausea and breathlessness are common above 3,500 metres; going down is the cure.
- Rockfall and heat: warm, dry spells make the Grand Couloir far more dangerous. Guides suspend climbs when conditions are bad.
- Weather and cold: storms and wind arrive fast, and the summit can be well below freezing in summer.
- Before you go: ask the Office de Haute Montagne in Chamonix about current conditions. In an emergency call 112; mountain rescue is run by the gendarmerie’s PGHM.
Combine it with
Pair the Aiguille du Midi with the Mer de Glace by walking the Grand Balcon Nord down to Montenvers. Hikers can spend days on the Tour du Mont Blanc around the massif; see our hiking guide. From Lyon or Geneva, Chamonix is an easy drive.

About 4,805 metres. The 2023 survey measured 4,805.59 m; the figure changes by a metre or two with the snow cap on the summit.
Do I need a permit to climb Mont Blanc?
There is no permit or fee, but on the Goûter route a prefectural order requires a named reservation in the Nid d’Aigle, Tête Rousse or Goûter hut, carried with ID and shown on request.

Only fit walkers with some mountaineering training, a certified guide and several days of acclimatisation. It needs crampons, an ice axe and a rope, and the route has serious rockfall danger.
What is the best way to see Mont Blanc without climbing?
Take the Aiguille du Midi cable car to 3,842 metres, or the Brévent lift for the best view of the whole mountain from across the valley.
When is the Mont Blanc climbing season?
Roughly June to September, while the huts are staffed: in 2026 the Goûter hut opened from 30 May to 4 October. Hot spells can close the route.
How much is the Aiguille du Midi?
As of October 2026, an adult return to the top costs €60.20 to €83.00 depending on the date and how early you book. A boarding time is required.
