Best Time to Visit New Zealand: Month-by-Month Guide

Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park, New Zealand

Short answer: the best time to visit New Zealand is February and March, when the weather is still summery and settled, lakes and beaches are warm, the Great Walks are open, and the Christmas-to-January holiday crowds have gone home. December and January are warmest and busiest; April brings golden autumn colors around Queenstown and Wānaka; and late June to September is ski season in the Southern Alps and on Mount Ruapehu.

New Zealand’s seasons are the reverse of the Northern Hemisphere’s, and the weather can change several times in one day. The climate table shows average daily highs and lows and rain by month at Auckland Airport, from New Zealand’s 1991–2020 climate normals as submitted to the World Meteorological Organization (New Zealand’s stations are run by NIWA and MetService). The other temperatures on this page are NIWA’s 1991–2020 climate normals (mean daily maximum and minimum) for Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown. The north is mild and humid, the south cooler, and the mountains can get snow in any month. Rainfall varies hugely: Christchurch records about 620 mm (24 in) a year and Auckland about 1,120 mm (44 in), while Milford Sound averages about 6,550 mm (258 in), with rain on around 185 days.

New Zealand month by month

January

Peak summer and peak season. Auckland averages 24 °C (75 °F) by day, Queenstown 22 °C (72 °F), with long, light evenings. New Zealanders are on their main holidays until schools reopen between 28 January and 3 February 2027, so campervans, ferries, Great Walk huts and beach towns such as the Bay of Islands are booked solid; reserve months ahead. New Year’s Day and 2 January (observed 4 January in 2027) are public holidays.

February

Often the most settled month, with Auckland at 24 °C (76 °F) and Christchurch and Queenstown at 22 °C (71–72 °F). Schools are back, so beaches and lakes are quieter while the sea is at its warmest. Waitangi Day, 6 February, brings commemorations and a free festival at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds; in 2027 it falls on a Saturday and is observed on Monday 8 February.

March

Early autumn: warm days, cooler nights (Queenstown about 19 / 7 °C, 66 / 45 °F) and fewer visitors, one of the best months for road trips and hiking. Easter falls early in 2027, with Good Friday on 26 March and Easter Monday on 29 March; shops close on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, and holiday traffic is heavy.

April

Autumn colors peak in Central Otago, Arrowtown and Wānaka. Days are mild (Auckland 20 °C/69 °F, Queenstown 15 °C/59 °F) and nights cold in the south. School holidays run from 10 to 26 April 2027, and Anzac Day (25 April, observed Monday 26 April in 2027) closes many shops in the morning. The Great Walks season ends on 30 April.

May

A quiet shoulder month with good deals. Highs are about 18 °C (64 °F) in Auckland and 12 °C (53 °F) in Queenstown, with frosty nights inland. Some tours and alpine routes run reduced schedules. Long, clear nights make it a good month for stargazing at Tekapo and Aoraki/Mount Cook.

June

Winter starts: Queenstown averages 9 °C (47 °F) by day and 0 °C (31 °F) at night, while Auckland stays mild at 16 °C (60 °F). The ski fields usually open from mid- to late June, depending on snow, and the Queenstown Winter Festival is held in late June. The King’s Birthday holiday falls on 7 June 2027, and Matariki, the Māori New Year, is a public holiday on Friday 25 June 2027, with light shows and dawn ceremonies. Humpback whales pass Kaikōura in June and July.

July

The coldest month: Queenstown averages 8 °C (47 °F) by day and −1 °C (29 °F) at night, Christchurch 11 / 1 °C (52 / 33 °F). Skiing is in full swing in Queenstown, Wānaka, Canterbury and on Mount Ruapehu, and the July school holidays (3 to 18 July 2027) are the busiest weeks on the slopes. Snow and ice can close alpine roads; carry chains.

August

Still winter, with clear, crisp days inland and often the best snow of the season. The North Island stays mild: Auckland 15 °C (59 °F), Wellington 12 °C (54 °F). It is a quiet, good-value time for cities, hot pools in Rotorua and Milford Sound cruises, which run all year.

September

Early spring: lambs, blossom and waterfalls swollen with snowmelt, but very changeable weather. Ski fields keep running until late September or early October if snow allows. School holidays run from 25 September to 10 October 2027. Christchurch warms to about 15 °C (59 °F).

October

Spring blossom in Christchurch and the gardens of the North Island, longer days and windy, showery weather. The Great Walks season opens in late October (Tongariro Northern Circuit from 23 October 2026, Kepler Track from 27 October). Labour Day, Monday 26 October 2026, is a busy long weekend.

November

Late spring and a sweet spot before the summer rush: Auckland 20 °C (67 °F), Queenstown 18 °C (64 °F). The Milford and Routeburn tracks open on 1 November, and Mount Cook lilies bloom in November and December. Prices are still shoulder-season until mid-month. Chains may still be needed on the Milford Road.

December

Summer arrives, with long days and warm weather (Christchurch 21 °C/70 °F, Queenstown 20 °C/68 °F). The first half of the month is pleasant and relatively quiet; from mid-December, when schools break up, and especially from Christmas, the peak season begins. Christmas Day (Friday 25 December 2026) and Boxing Day (observed Monday 28 December) close many shops.

Best time for hiking, skiing, beaches and whale watching

Hiking and Great Walks

November to April. Huts must be booked, and the most popular dates sell out soon after bookings open. Outside the season, alpine tracks are for experienced trampers only.

Whale watching and stargazing

Sperm whales live off Kaikōura all year, and humpbacks pass in June and July. For stars, the long, clear nights of autumn and winter in the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve are best, ideally around a new moon.

Festivals

Waitangi Day (6 February), Matariki (25 June 2027), the Queenstown Winter Festival in late June, and summer food, wine and music festivals across the country.

Seasons to plan around

  • Summer holidays (mid-December to late January): the busiest weeks of the year, when domestic and international holidays overlap. Book campervans, rental cars, Cook Strait ferries and Great Walk huts months ahead.
  • School holidays in 2027: 10–26 April, 3–18 July and 25 September–10 October, with schools returning between 28 January and 3 February 2027 after the summer break. Ski fields, holiday parks and family attractions are busiest then.
  • Public holidays: many shops close on Christmas Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday and the morning of Anzac Day, and traffic is heavy at the start and end of long weekends. Each region also has its own anniversary day.
  • Winter roads (about June to October): snow and ice on alpine passes; chains are required on the Milford Road from June to November, and avalanche control can close it at short notice.
  • Changeable weather: any month can bring rain, wind or mountain snow. Pack layers and check MetService and the Department of Conservation before hiking.

How long to stay

Two weeks is the minimum for a road trip covering the highlights of both islands; three to four weeks lets you slow down and add a Great Walk. With ten days, choose one island. See the sample itineraries in our New Zealand travel guide.
