Yeosu, a port city on a peninsula of South Korea’s south coast, sits at the edge of a sea scattered with more than 300 islands. Koreans love it for its “night sea,” made famous by a hit song: the illuminated Dolsan Bridge, a maritime cable car gliding over the harbor, and seafood eaten in the tent bars along the waterfront. By day, explore Odongdo’s camellia island, the cliff-top hermitage of Hyangiram facing the sunrise, the halls where Admiral Yi Sun-sin commanded his navy, and the former Expo 2012 site, now a marine leisure park. In the fall of 2026, Yeosu hosts the World Island Exhibition, from September 5 to November 4. The city is about three hours from Seoul by KTX and makes a natural pair with Suncheon Bay’s wetlands next door. Spring and fall are the best seasons; summer is hot, humid and rainy, with typhoons possible.

Yeosu’s areas and where to stay
Yeosu occupies the Yeosu Peninsula and Dolsan Island, linked by bridges, at the mouth of Gwangyang Bay. The city has been part of the new Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City since July 1, 2026, when South Jeolla Province and Gwangju were merged, according to the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) and the Korea Meteorological Administration.
The Expo area and Odongdo
Around Yeosu EXPO Station, the former Expo 2012 site has the Aqua Planet aquarium, the Sky Tower and the Big-O show, with Odongdo island a short walk along a causeway. Big hotels and resorts face the sea; the most convenient base for train travelers.
Jungang-dong and the old port
The old center around the harbor: Jinnamgwan hall, the Yi Sun-sin Square with a turtle ship replica, the fish markets, and the waterfront street where pojangmacha tent bars open in the evening, with views of Dolsan Bridge and the cable car. Lively and atmospheric at night.
Dolsan Island
Across Dolsan Bridge and the cable car, Dolsan has the upper cable car station and Dolsan Park, seafront cafés, the Jinmo district used as a venue for the 2026 World Island Exhibition, and the coastal road south to Hyangiram. Resort hotels and pensions with sea views.

Top things to see in Yeosu
The Yeosu night sea and the cable car
Yeosu’s waterfront is at its best after dark, when Dolsan Bridge, Geobukseon Bridge and the harbor are lit up. The Yeosu Maritime Cable Car crosses the sea between Jasan Park, near Odongdo, and Dolsan Park; some cabins have glass floors. Ride it at sunset, then walk down to the old port for seafood at the tent bars and the light shows.
Odongdo
A small, wooded island linked to the mainland by a 768 m (half-mile) causeway, which you can walk or cross by a small road train. It is covered with camellias, which flower from late winter to early spring, and bamboo, with a lighthouse and paths to rocky coves. It is part of Hallyeohaesang National Park.
Hyangiram Hermitage
A Buddhist hermitage built among boulders on the cliffs at the southern tip of Dolsan, reached by a steep path and a narrow passage between rocks. It faces east, and the sunrise over the sea from here is one of Korea’s most celebrated; a sunrise festival is held on January 1.
Jinnamgwan and Admiral Yi
Jinnamgwan, built in 1599 as the headquarters of the Joseon navy’s Jeolla left command, is the largest single-story wooden building in Korea and a National Treasure; it stands above the old port. Yeosu was the base of Admiral Yi Sun-sin, whose armored turtle ships defeated the Japanese navy in the 1590s; a full-size turtle ship replica stands at the Yi Sun-sin Square and another at Dolsan Park.
The Expo Ocean Park
The Expo 2012 site has become a marine leisure area. According to the KTO, it features the “Big-O,” a giant ring-shaped water screen with an evening multimedia show, the Sky Tower observatory, made from a former cement silo, and the Aqua Planet aquarium, one of Korea’s largest. In 2026, the Expo Ocean Park is one of the venues of the World Island Exhibition.
The 2026 World Island Exhibition
According to the KTO, the 2026 World Island Exhibition Yeosu Korea, the first exhibition devoted to islands, runs from September 5 to November 4, 2026, with the theme “Islands: Connecting the Ocean and the Future.” The main venue in Dolsan’s Jinmo district has eight exhibition halls with media art, a digital aquarium and recreations of famous islands, and 133 performances are planned, from K-pop to dance troupes from 15 countries. Sub-venues on Gaedo and Geumodo islands offer island camping, yoga and the Bireong-gil cliff trail with a stamp tour. Tickets and schedules are on the official website, yeosuexhibition2026.or.kr.

Islands and boat trips
Yeosu’s sea is part of Hallyeohaesang National Park. Ferries from the Yeosu Passenger Terminal sail to Geumodo, with the cliff trail of Bireong-gil; to Sado, with dinosaur footprints; and further out to Geomundo and Baekdo, remote islands of lighthouses and cliffs (2 hours or more each way). Harbor cruises run in the evening to see the bridges lit up. Ferries stop in rough weather. See our boat trips guide.
Food and drink
Yeosu is one of Korea’s best seafood cities. Its signature dishes are gejang (raw crab marinated in soy sauce or chili, known as a “rice thief” because it makes you eat so much rice), gat kimchi made with Dolsan’s mustard leaves, seodae-hoe (spicy raw sole salad), grilled galchi (hairtail) and samhap, a combination of seafood, pork belly and kimchi. In the evening, the waterfront pojangmacha serve spicy seafood stews and grilled shellfish with soju, and the famous Yeosu baguette bakery draws queues. Restaurants serve the Jeolla region’s famous banquet of side dishes.
An evening in Yeosu
Yeosu’s evenings follow a pattern: ride the cable car or climb to Dolsan Park for the sunset over the harbor, then walk down to the waterfront by the old port, where the tent bars (pojangmacha) set up plastic tables along the sea wall from early evening. Order a seafood stew, grilled shellfish or a plate of samhap, share it with a bottle of soju or makgeolli, and watch the bridges change color. Harbor cruises leave in the evening for a view of the lights from the water. Prices at the tent bars are usually posted on menus at the entrance; check them before you sit down.
Walks and beaches
The Yeosu Gamagil coastal trails and Geumodo’s Bireong-gil follow cliffs and coves; Odongdo’s paths are short and easy. Mosageum and Bangjukpo beaches, on Dolsan, are the best for swimming in July and August. See our hiking and beaches guides.
Festivals
The Yeosu Geobukseon Festival celebrates Admiral Yi’s turtle ships in spring, and the Hyangiram Sunrise Festival welcomes the New Year. In 2026, the World Island Exhibition fills the fall.

Safety
Yeosu is safe and friendly. The main risks come from the sea and weather. Typhoons and storms, mainly from July to September, can bring high waves and close ferries and beaches; stay away from breakwaters and coastal rocks during warnings. On the cliff paths at Hyangiram, Geumodo and Odongdo, keep to the trails and take care on wet rocks. Swim only on lifeguarded beaches in July and August. In an emergency, call 112 for the police or 119 for an ambulance or fire.
What to pack for Yeosu
Comfortable shoes for hills and cliff paths, a light jacket for the sea breeze at night, swimwear in summer, an umbrella for the rainy season, and a camera with a tripod for night views. Korea uses 220 V and round two-pin plugs.
