Short answer: the best time to visit South Korea is spring (April to May) and fall (late September to November), with clear skies, mild days of about 18–24 °C (64–75 °F), cherry blossoms in early April and blazing fall colors from mid-October to mid-November. Summer is hot and humid, with the jangma monsoon rains from late June to late July and typhoons possible until September, but it is beach season; winter is cold and dry, cheap and good for skiing.

South Korea has four distinct seasons, and each changes what you can do, from cherry blossom walks to mountain hikes, beaches and ski slopes. This guide covers the weather, crowds and festivals in every month as of October 2026, with the best season for each region and the big holidays to plan around. The table shows the monthly averages for Seoul from the 1991–2020 climate normals of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), as submitted to the World Meteorological Organization, the same source as our country guide: average daily highs and lows, rainfall and rainy days. Seoul swings from about 2 °C (36 °F) by day and −6 °C (22 °F) at night in January to 30 °C (86 °F) in August, and July alone brings about 414 mm (16.3 in) of rain, nearly a third of the year’s total. Busan and Jeju are milder in winter, with January highs of 8–9 °C (47 °F).

South Korea month by month

January

Cold and dry, with Seoul below freezing at night and snow in the mountains. It is ski season in Gangwon and the time for ice-fishing festivals. Crowds and prices are low, apart from New Year’s sunrise festivals on the east coast. Pack a down jacket.

February

Still cold, but brighter, with plum blossoms in the south at the end of the month. In 2027, Seollal (Lunar New Year) falls on 7 February, with the holiday from 6 to 9 February: trains and buses sell out weeks ahead and some restaurants close, though palaces and museums often hold free events. The rest of the month is quiet and good value.

March

Cool and dry, with fine dust (yellow dust) days possible; check the air quality forecast. Cherry blossoms reach Jeju and Busan in the last week of the month: in 2026, the first blossoms were expected around 25 March. Canola flowers turn Jeju’s coast yellow from March to April.

April

Mild and sunny, and cherry blossom season: in 2026, the first blossoms were expected around 28 March in Gyeongju and Jeonju, 1 April in Gangneung, 3 April in Seoul and 7 April in Incheon, with full bloom about a week later. Seoul averages about 18 °C (64 °F). Crowds are high on blossom weekends.

May

Warm, often the most pleasant month, with highs around 24 °C (74 °F) in Seoul, azaleas on the mountains and green tea fields at their freshest. Buddha’s Birthday falls on 13 May 2027, with Seoul’s Lotus Lantern Festival parade the weekend before. Early-May holidays make some weekends busy, and the Jeonju International Film Festival runs around late April and early May.

June

Warm and increasingly humid, with hydrangeas on Jeju and the first beach days. According to the KMA, the jangma monsoon normally begins on Jeju around 19 June, reaches the south around 23 June and Seoul around 25 June. The first half of the month is the better bet.

July

Hot and very wet during jangma, which lasts about a month, with heavy downpours that can flood riverside roads and close hiking trails. Beaches open in early July, and the coasts get busy from late in the month. Typhoon season begins. Plan indoor sights, such as museums and markets, for rainy days.

August

The hottest month, about 30 °C (86 °F) in Seoul, humid, with warm nights. Beach season peaks at Busan’s Haeundae and on the east coast, and summer holidays fill the coasts. Typhoons are possible, especially on Jeju and the south coast.

September

Still warm, drying out later in the month, with typhoons possible. In 2027, Chuseok, the harvest festival, falls on 15 September, with the holiday from 14 to 16 September, when transportation sells out and many shops close. The late September weather is often excellent.

October

Clear, cool and dry, with highs around 20 °C (68 °F) in Seoul: many people’s favorite month. Fall colors start on Seoraksan in early October; the Busan International Film Festival runs from 6 to 15 October 2026; and in 2026 the World Island Exhibition fills Yeosu until 4 November. It is the peak season for hiking, so weekends on the mountains are crowded.

November

Cool, with the first frosts. Fall colors peak in Seoul, Gyeongju and Jeonju in early November and on Jeju’s Hallasan around mid-month; the city ginkgo trees turn bright yellow. Crowds fall after the colors fade, and late November is quiet.

December

Cold and dry, with Christmas lights in Seoul and the ski season starting in Gangwon. Prices are low until New Year, when people head to the east coast for the 31 December and New Year’s Day sunrise.

Best time to visit by region

Seoul and Incheon

April and May, and October to early November, with highs of about 18–24 °C (64–75 °F); cherry blossoms in the first half of April and fall colors from late October. Over Seollal and Chuseok the city empties; palaces stay open, but many small restaurants close. See Seoul and Incheon.

Busan

May to June and September to October, with highs of about 22–26 °C (72–80 °F); beach season from June to early September. Busan has the mildest winters of the big mainland cities. See our Busan guide.

Jeju Island

April to early June and September to November, with beach season in July and August. Jeju gets the monsoon first, around 19 June, and typhoons can cancel flights and ferries for a day or two. Hallasan has snow from about December to March. See our Jeju Island guide.

Gyeongju and Jeonju

Late March to May and October to mid-November. Both lie inland, so summers are hot in the shadeless streets and winters cold; explore early and late in summer. See Gyeongju and Jeonju.

Seoraksan National Park and Gangneung

Late September to early November for the colors, which start at Seoraksan’s summit in early October and peak in late October; May to June for green valleys. Snow covers the high trails from about November to March. Gangneung‘s beaches are best in July and August. See our Seoraksan guide.

Yeosu and the south coast

April to early June and September to November, with camellias on Odongdo from winter to early spring. Typhoons often hit the south coast first, from July to September, stopping island ferries. See our Yeosu guide.

Best time for cherry blossoms, fall colors, hiking and beaches

Cherry blossoms

The bloom moves north in about two weeks, from Jeju and Busan in late March to Seoul in early April and Incheon a few days later; full bloom comes about a week after the first flowers. Forecasts for each year are published from late February, so check before booking. Jinhae, near Changwon, holds Korea’s biggest cherry blossom festival.

Fall colors

According to the 2026 forecast published by the Korea Tourism Organization, colors start on Seoraksan around 3 October and peak there around 25 October; Bukhansan, in Seoul, peaks around 4 November, Jirisan around 5 November, Naejangsan around 11 November and Hallasan around 13 November. City parks peak in late October and early November.

Hiking

May, and October to early November, are the best months for the national parks; avoid jangma and typhoon days, when trails close, and come on weekdays in October to miss the crowds. See our hiking guide.

Beaches

July and August, from the time beaches open in early July, at Busan’s Haeundae and Gwangalli, on the east coast around Gangneung and on Jeju. See our beaches guide.

Skiing

December to February at Gangwon’s mountain resorts, a few hours from Seoul.

Seasons to plan around

Jangma, the summer monsoon

According to the KMA, jangma normally begins on Jeju around 19 June, in the southern regions around 23 June and in the central regions, including Seoul, around 25 June, and lasts about a month. Rain often comes in violent downpours that flood riverside roads and close the Han River parks and hiking trails. Plan museums, markets and cafés for wet days.

Typhoons

About three or four typhoons a year affect South Korea directly or indirectly, mostly from July to September, according to the KMA. They hit Jeju and the south coast hardest; ferries and flights may be canceled and beaches and trails closed, so keep your plans flexible.

Seollal and Chuseok

The two biggest holidays, each lasting about three days, when Koreans travel to their home towns. In 2027, Seollal runs from 6 to 9 February and Chuseok from 14 to 16 September. KTX tickets open one month ahead and sell out fast; highways are jammed, and some shops and restaurants close.

Fine dust in spring

Fine dust and yellow dust can make the air hazy on some days in spring, especially in March. Check the air quality forecast and carry a KF94 mask.

How long to stay

Seven days covers Seoul and Busan with a day trip to Gyeongju; ten days adds Jeju or Jeonju; and 14 days lets you add Seoraksan and the east coast. See the itineraries in our South Korea travel guide.
