Frequently asked questions
Do I need a voltage converter or just an adapter?
Usually just an adapter. Most phone, tablet, camera and laptop chargers are marked 100–240 V, which means they work anywhere; the adapter only changes the shape of the plug. Check the label on each charger. Single-voltage devices such as many hair dryers, straighteners and kettles need a converter, or a dual-voltage travel model.
What plugs does Europe use?
Most of continental Europe uses the round two-pin Type C and the grounded Type F (Schuko) or Type E at 230 V. The United Kingdom, Ireland, Malta and Cyprus use the three-pin Type G. Switzerland and Italy also have their own grounded sockets (Types J and L), though Type C plugs usually fit them.
Which countries use 110–120 volts?
The United States, Canada, Mexico and much of Central America and the Caribbean use about 120 V with Type A and B plugs. Japan uses 100 V. A few countries, such as Brazil, use different voltages in different regions, so check the notes in the table.
